A Government of Straw
MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
Buzz Flash,
A philosophy that describes the loyal Bush GOP . . .
Weakness . . . The greatest of all weaknesses is the fear of appearing weak. J.B. Bossuet, Politics from Holy Writ. 1709
And, in some deranged form of ideas, Bush and his followers thought fighting was a sign of strength. Sitting behind a desk and starting wars does not make the man or a good leader. We have the debt, death, and destruction to prove it.
The 20th century protection racket is still in top form . . . during the past few months, we Americans have seen that the infamous protection racket is still up and running. Insurance companies seem sure that they will make out in the healthcare debates. What happened to the healthcare bill that was supposed to be dedicated to Senator Kennedy? Eh? A government that can't take care of its citizens is no democracy.
Hate, racism, and threats of violence within our own country can be heard every day on U.S. airwaves or from the willfully ignorant on the streets. Good people and top organizations are constantly under attack in this country today, war is still going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, and New Orleans is still without repair and people are still without homes, and the wealthy 1% of this country are still in the counting house, counting all of their money . . . and we, as a nation, are still without much change. Other than all of that . . . we could be having a good year.
The Bush GOP in Congress are still a Party of NO, not working in government . . . does this mean that the Bush GOP believes in "ideological purity or race purity?" Personally, I think they find it hard to believe in anything that can't show them a profit for their pockets.
For years now, the Bush GOP in Congress has been getting away with what is usually referred to as the "Straw Man Fallacy." And, we have seen more of this during the past few months since President Obama took over the White House.
"The straw man fallacy is the tactic in argument of misrepresenting an opponent's position, making it appear more implausible, so that it can more easily be refuted, then going ahead and arguing against the imputed position as though it were really that of your opponent." Oxford Companion to Philosophy, edited by Ted Honderich
The Bush GOP in Congress have used this approach over and over again. With healthcare for instance, the death panels and the threat that euthanasia would be used against older people, telling Americans that the health plan would be the death of over 300,000 women with cancer, and other numerous lies. Lies that are so crazy that they almost sound as if they came out of some book on "urband legends" . . . just how stupid do these people think we Americans are.
Thousands of Americans are dying every year in this country due to war, auto accidents, drugs, because of no healthcare, guns . . . anything else you Republicans want to do to kill us Americans off? The Bush GOP does not save people's lives. They use people, just as Bush and his GOP loyalists used our military, and cost the lives of at least 5,000 Americans and tens of thousands injured. Of course, we don't know for sure how many deaths because the military was found not to count the deaths of those who died after they were taken out of the war and died later of their injuries. Do Republicans ever do anything that does not consist of falsifying the results?
None of these Republicans in Congress or any number of their supporters ever protested out in the streets over the lousy hospital care that was reported in the media regarding our soldiers, after coming home from Iraq. None of these Republicans got their big behinds out in the streets of this nation protesting the wars, or Bush's legislation against us Americans (they voted for it), the lack of jobs, or for the people who lost their homes and who were put out on the streets. No Republican in sight.
Today, true to their nature of not caring, they (GOP) are out trying to make sure that we Americans do not get any decent healthcare. That is something that will get them out into the streets, protesting for Big Pharma. This shouldn't surprise anyone who has been paying attention for the last twenty years. These are not people who care about people. And, our Democrats aren't anything to brag about either. They, too, are paid highly by those same corporations.
Only the Democrats in Congress took these arguments by the Bush GOP seriously, because many aren't speaking out too loudly for decent healthcare (single payer) either. Any thinking American already knows and understands, that the Republicans who argue against healthcare don't give a damn about saving lives. They have already proved this when they supported the invasion/occupation of Iraq and the deadly bombing in Afghanistan, and ignored the drowning of New Orleans. So, why are the Democrats in Congress still talking to these Bush supporting Republicans today, I wonder.
We Americans need single payer health care. That's what we need to insure every American. Even with the public option, millions of Americans will not be able to afford healthcare . . . so, to the Democrats in Congress, if you cannot put together a decent healthcare package . . . forget it. Cut it up and have it for a lite lunch. We Americans will have to make our own changes to get what this country needs, and that means changing out Congress for people who will work for the people of this nation. If we are serious about healthcare they should be talking to Canada. Getting ideas. But, we Americans should already understand that this delaying, talking, discussing, defending in the media, and being driven by the media . . . is to make us think something is really being done, when it is not. When have the Democrats turned their backs on these Republicans, and just went about doing their jobs for the people? Not enough, not nearly enough.
The Republican Party of No government, attacks good people such as Van Jones, and Obama should never have made him quit his job, never. Who's running this White House besides the DLC and the GOP? It should be Obama. These are Bush people, and that's why he was attacked for something this country still needs and that is a proper, outside investigation into 911 . . . along with outside investigations into the invasion/occupation of Iraq, the hunt for bin Laden or lack of it, and the Anthrax killer (Bush would never seriously go after bin Laden, he believes in loyalty and Bush is close to bin Laden's family).
Unbelievable that these Republicans can get so much press, while trying to deny this country decent healthcare, when they have supported the killings of a whole country during Bush's invasion into Iraq. A country of over a million dead citizens today, and over three million displaced. Why do we even have to listen to these warring for profit, fascist, GOP pigs?
ACORN, an organization that has done a great job of getting people interested in participating in government, such as registering to vote and voting. Remember the election fraud we had during the Bush years? Computers throwing votes, not to Democrats, only to Republicans? When so much of that was being discovered, Republicans came up with the idea of "voter fraud." Insane, but media carried that instead of the real fraud, election fraud. Did anyone go to jail for all of the election fraud? Bush was never elected, twice, and the Democrats let it happen.
Only the Bush GOP could come up with a sting built around prostitutes and a brothel. Since many of the members of that party seems to be experienced in such a business, or so we have read. But, with so many such stories, MSM failed to carry the whole story, and Democracy Now did the job for them, today. It seems that several of the ACORN offices threw these people out and some even had to call the police on them. The ACORN people who got caught up in the sting were not the regular employees who are usually hired by ACORN. Five unqualified employees out of over 700. Of course, the truth of this is that the Bush GOP crackers do not want black Americans or brown Americans registered to vote because most of them vote for the Democratic Party.
Shame on the Democrats for going along with the Bush GOP in Congress to stop the funding to ACORN without any investigation or explanation.
The measure, offered as part of a motion on a student loan bill, passed by a vote of 345-75, with all "no" votes coming from Democrats.
The Senate voted earlier this week to withdraw housing and urban development funding. Last week, the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, which on Wednesday said it is suspending accepting new clients and launching an investigation.
The only corrupt organization still operating in U.S. government is the Bush anti-democracy Republican Party. My god, people, you voted to support the goddamn war in Iraq and the bombing in Afghanistan, and yet, you don't want to spend any money for an organization that does good work. They don't kill people, they just register them to vote.
Again, how can we keep this government strong when the Bush GOP keep getting away with using lies, propaganda and straw man arguments and the Democrats keep supporting them . . . which should put every Democrat, who does support these Bush GOP, anti-American citizen criminals, on very crumbly, unstable ground when facing their own upcoming election. Who's going to miss any Democrat in Congress, who keeps supporting these criminals? They (Bush GOP) supported a criminal regime, that many in the Bush administration should be awaiting trials by now, if this government was truly doing its job.
We Americans voted for CHANGE. Change means to get rid of every single rotten piece of anti-democracy legislature that the criminal Bush regime put through Congress. Clean up what they did to our public schools, and instead, promoted religious schooling or home schooling. Why? Because those children will be easier to lead. They will not be educated within society. Their thinking will be narrow, and limited. Public education is not just about books . . . it's about learning to get along with all types of people. It's about exchanging ideas and accepting the ideas of others.
Change means stopping the killing in Iraq and Afghanistan. No one should ever have had to lose their life over a lie by a government administration, and the people who did this and supported such crimes should be made accountable . . . if that doesn't happen, then the Republican straw man strategy is not the only thing made of straw in U.S. Congress today.
Too many years past the time to kick some Republican ass in DC. What kind of country are we today to find so much hate and racism out in the open on a daily basis. Threats of violence out in the open, and I said this years ago . . . when the U.S. has a violent, unlawful government, such as the Bush GOP, it will filter down and it has. Shame on this country to allow our airwaves to be filled with hate radio by thugs getting paid millions, and they couldn't care less about the rest of us, and the worst insult is to call this hateful crap, free speech. When people get killed or harmed by those who listen to such diatribe, it costs those lives.
When have we heard any Republican of that Party today do anything to help this country or its people? They are a Party of violence, hate, and racism. There is no real Republican Party of opposition working in U.S. government today. It was kidnapped years ago, and holding U.S. government up for ransom ever since. Regardless of how much the Democratic Party gives to these people in government, they will never change. They do not believe in government at all. And, it's not as if we have never heard them say this.
A sad incident, this week in the news, a mother and child going into a building and a white thug coming out almost hurt her child and she mentioned this to him, asking him to please be careful, and he attacked her there in the street, in front of witnesses. He wasn't drunk or insane, just full of hate and violence. And, the thug is already out on bail.
Cracker Barrel Beating May Be Hate Crime - News Story - WSB Atlanta
We need U.S. government to clean itself up, clean our airwaves up, and demand common respect and decency towards fellow American citizens . . . it's a fallacy to believe that speech is free when it can cause so much hurt and pain.
What's the story? Huff and puff and we'll blow your house down? If U.S. government keeps going on as it has, without any accountability and constantly aiding and abetting, and listening to this Republican Party's gang of NO . . . or giving into their constant demands of incivility activity . . . a government built upon straw man arguments, is a weak government, and that's what these Republicans want. They want power and they don't want any government interfering with their demands. They had full control when Bush was in the White House. Everything was off the Democratic table. Remember?
Do any of you Democrats in Congress understand what comes next? Well, we've heard it already this year, these Republicans of straw, who supported the criminal Bush regime for eight long years . . . will try to blame you, the Democrats, for the criminal mess they created, using the straw man fallacy. They will do this in order to try and win back their power. When they should be acting as a Party of stealth because of what they are responsible for . . . they are constantly in the news, supported by the GOP media in this country, and they do not fear accountability for their actions. If they did, they might just shut the hell up.
We don't need them (Republicans) to keep U.S. government from doing what is right for the American people. We've had eight years of their incompetence. This is what change is all about . . . they (Bush GOP) do not want to do government, and they haven't done it for years . . . so keep the straw men/women out.

Seems the writer fell for the straw man
This writer omits the Democratic corruption than enables the oligarchs to control our nation. This problem has nothing to do with the political parties in Washington and evertthing to do with domination by a corporate class of oligarchs. Seems like the 'straw man' theory has also inveigled this writer. In other words, she has fallen for the notion promoted in the news that Democrats are different than Republicans. In fact, they are both identical. Worse, the Democrats lie about it. At least their Republican counterparts openly admit to their position and try to make philosophies that support it. On the other hand, the wolves in sheep's clothing Democrats fool us into thinking they are somehow different and will change the nation. If the writer happened to be awake over the past nine months she would have noticed that the Democrats have behaved a badly or worse than the Republicans. They are still performing illegal eavesdropping, pursuing illegal wars, obstructing the passage of real health care reform, failing to stop the environmental destruction by corporations, failing to regulate corporations, handing out money to the banks that ripped us off, making foreign policy decisions to support the likes of General Electric and other US oligarchs, keeping Bush's attornies in the DoJ, appointing corporate fascists like Gates and the list goes on. In fact, it is specifically this type of writer who screws it up for the true progressives, believing and trying to convince others to believe that Democrats will actually make a difference. We do not need these types of phony liberals who do not take the time to educate themselves and who support crooked Democrats instead of voting for real progressives, like Green Party candidates or similar. Please stop writing this trash and spend some time educating yourself.
Democrats ALSO corrupt!
A great essay. I only have a problem with the following claim:
"The only corrupt organization still operating in U.S. government is the Bush anti-democracy Republican Party."
This seems to be a common liberal blind spot: The inability to see the rampant corruption of the Democratic Party, which is holding back progressive change in America.
It's corruption that's causing the Democrats to withhold decent health care from Americans.
It's corruption that's causing the Democrats not to investigate the numerous crimes of the Bush Administration, including staging the 9/11 attacks, stealing elections, and lying the country into a war.
It's corruption that causes the Democrats to continually make concessions to uncooperative Republicans, to please their corporate donors.
I could go on, but you get the idea. The liberal approach of unconditionally supporting the Democrats is a failure. You have Democrats (e.g. Obama) whose actions are indistinguishable from Republicans.
We've seen what health-insurance corporations do without competition. Why would the Democrats be any different? The Democrats need some competition from a REAL progressive party: The Green Party.
The Green Party actually stands for single-payer (Medicare-for-all) health care, and other progressive issues that the Democrats only pretend to. See their platform: http://www.ilgp.org/about/2008-common-platform-for-green-party-congressional-candidates
Only a few percentage points for the Green Party are needed to send the corporate-funded Democrats a wake-up call. We need to keep them honest.
Vote Green!
The Grass Is Greener Across The Duopoly Fence?
I have to agree with Alan8 regarding the corruption of America's major political parties. There is likely no hope of regaining control of them. Where we part company is due to the intensity of his admiration for the Green Party.
The Greens aren't the only political option in range of achieving sufficient numbers to merit federal matching funds, for the Libertarians are as well. Dispensing with the Libertarians first, I agree with their general positions on fiscal responsibility. It's how they propose to implement these ideas that costs them my support. When their ideas catch up with the 21st Century, I might give them a thought.
I'm very sympathetic toward the Greens, but I have trouble supporting them due to the narrowness of their platform. Our daily realities aren't strongly represented in their positions. The environment is certainly an important topic, for without a healthy environment nothing can live on this planet. But in order to achieve a size large enough to supplant the major political gangs, other topics need to be discussed to attract a wider base of support. These are some of those topics:
The US is about to lose economic power as the world's creditor nations seek more secure venues for profits. As the dollar declines, what is to keep the wealthy from turning their exploitation inward again? How do we keep the lowly from becoming merely a resource to be exploited?
Our military power - too enthralled with the corporatists - is increasingly being offshored to the point that we may not be able to defend our own shores one day soon. As long as war is a reality, and that this nation has something to defend, we need to have the ability to do so. How do we keep it under civilian control and prevent the next version of the Military-Industrial Corporation from emerging?
Domestically, what are we to do about the religious nuts and weapons whackos and racists? How do we include those on the bottom of the economy without inspiring those at the top to wage war or initiate a police state worse than the one we now have? And will we ever get real health care reform?
Yes, I'm showing my prejudices and lack of up-to-date information, but the fact that I have these thoughts represents what the Greens are up against. I have yet to see them rise to the challenge (but hope they do). The duopoly has to be destroyed, and I'd rather see a forward-looking party rise up than one which wants to drag the nation back to the 1880s.
Read the platform
Neoconned, have you actually read the Green Party platform? (http://www.ilgp.org/about/2008-common-platform-for-green-party-congressional-candidates)
Are you one of those people that sees the word "Green" and assumes the Green Party is only concerned with the environment?
The Green Party's approach to issues is guided by the Ten Key Values (http://www.gp.org/tenkey.shtml).
For example, you ask "...what is to keep the wealthy from turning their exploitation inward again?". The answer is in value 2 (Social Justice and Economic Opportunity) and value 6 (Community based Economics and Economic Justice).
This is addressed in a bit more detail in the platform, point 6: For economic health: Fair Trade, a Rebuilt Infrastructure and Investment in Education.
Read the Ten Key Values and the platform. You'll see that the Green Party does what a reasonable person would expect any "good" party to do, emphasizing fairness. This is one of the reasons there's a Green Party in virtually every country on the planet; these ideas are universal, and appeal to our innate sense of fairness.
