Failure of Military-Industrial Complex: Won WW II Against Two Advanced Military Powers in 4 Years But Can't Defeat Taliban in 8!
BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG
By Mark Karlin
Many of us, myself included, will listen to President Obama at West Point as he announces the continuation of a war that will run past a decade during his term, and we will feel the profound sense of powerlessness that with change has come more of the same military failure of the Bush years.
This is something Shakespearean, like the Hundred Years' War, that defies any logic, common sense, or explanation about how the number one military power in the world can't defeat a ragtag group of tribal zealots.
Hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of American lives -- not to mention Afghani civilian deaths -- and the conflict in Afghanistan grows worse and more corrupt every day.
Now, the promise of change, President Obama, is chaneling the puppet of Dick Cheney -- George W. Bush -- with shades of Dick Nixon's "secret plan" to end the Vietnam War tossed in: this will be Obama's "exit plan."
Yes, Obama inherited this conflict, but he could have been the one to end it.
There are covert actions that can be taken to pursue terrorists and strategic strikes that would cost a fraction of the costs and lives now being wasted in a failed years-long effort to feed the beast of the illusions of lost American empire and military prowess.
We didn't understand in Vietnam either that mega-bombs can't win over hearts and minds.
The one success story that can be claimed is the nearly trillion dollars and more that has gone into the pockets of the military-industrial complex that profits off of wars without end. It is their profit and our loss.
Everyone in America wants to be protected from terrorism, but it was George W. Bush's flagrant dismissal of the warning of domestic hijackings by Al Qaeda that led to 9/11 and this endless war, the draining of our national treasury, and the loss of life that followed.
But now it is Obama's war. With the escalation and increase of troops that he is announcing, along with the $1 million a soldier price tag, not to mention a fortune spent on private contractors, he is now the one who owns the failed post World War II unstoppable military-defense contractor alliance that thrives on war.
Just as there was too much money and power on Wall Street for Obama to stand up and not pay their ransom; there is too much money and power in the Pentagon and the likes of Halliburton and Lockheed Martin not to continue a war that, by its very length alone, is an utter failure.
So the man who promised change is offering to lead us forward with more of the same bloodshed and trillion dollar plus drain on our Treasury that could be used to improve the lives of Americans at home.
Leaders change public opinion, open up eyes to the truth; those who lack courage follow the path of least resistance.
The War in Afghanistan is a tragic farce.
Obama should be bringing down the curtain on a graveyard that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
But he won't. We can weep or we can again mobilize, protest, and work to save our nation from a war that is a cancer that has metastisized.

Hardly Surprising
The military/industrial complex designs its weaponry and tactics to fight "conventional" wars in which army is pitted against army. No country ever won a "war" against rebels and insurgents of another country, the military/industrial complex is not geared for assymetrical war. In Afghanistan, even the population is against this "war" and profoundly resents the presence of US and other foreign troops, which makes things even more difficult for said troops. What has been going on in Afghanistan is hardly a war, it is a violent and destructive occupation against the Afghan people's will.
The US seems not to have learnt the lessons of Korea and Viet Nam.
Furthermore, the purpose of the military/industrial complex is NOT to win wars, it is to make obscene amounts of money for defense contractors. It is not in the military/industrial complex' interests to win wars, it is in its interests to make "wars" last as long as possible, and even indefinitely if possible. It cares not about civilian victims nor about military deaths and maimed. It is pure greed and evil.
a mistake made on purpose
It's big business , big $ , plain and simple , they know damned good and well that it's useless and a no win situation . Nation building never worked before and never will work . Like Greenwald said : 100,000 troops at a million dollars a troop per year to kill 100 Taliban ? The only loyalty we have in Afghanistan is from those we are paying off and buying . Ahhhh yes , America the beautiful ! Man , this is change we can believe in isn't it ?
Maybe, just maybe
Obama got the same word that bush did during 9/11, namely that he's not the Man, and if he wants to go on living he'll go along with the program.
Sounds crazy, but at the same time, it explains the present situation.
MIC is Clever
The MIC realized it's more profitable to keep wars going
(perpetual wars) than to win them and kill the cash
cow. Clever work MIC!!!!
I, for one, want an open society.
Mark, you wrote, "Everyone in America wants to be protected from terrorism." Well, I want an open society and I don't want to be protected from terorrism. I'll explain. In an open society, people know and trust one another and anyone who threatens hostile acts are quickly indentified by everyone else and reported to trusted authorities. In a closed society, like the one we live in, people don't even talk to their next door neighbors and terrorists can live amongst us since we are all afraid of being falsely reported by our unfriendly neighbors.
It's long long past due to investigate the criminal acts of 9/11 and throw George W Bush and "Dick" Cheney in jail to await their just rewards. No one, I mean no one should be above the law. If these crimes against all Americans are left unprosecuted (as were Hitler's burning down of the Reichstag in 1933), we will all pay the horrible price of living in the blatantly corrupt society that results from corrupt men and women ruling at their whim our great country rather than living under the rule of law respected and honored by one and all - especially those at the top of the pyramid of power.
p.s. The Transit Police "don't work hard to keep me safe" contrary to what the Public Address Announcer claims at the subway station. These men and women with their riot gear, taser guns and assault rifles scare the living daylight out of me. I've seen on YouTube too many innocent people murdered by trigger happy law enforcement thugs to honestly believe that it is "hard work" to beat the living daylight out of detainees. I guess it would be politically incorrect for the Public Address Announcer to say, "The Transit Police love their job, just give them the excuse they need so they can beat the daylight out of you, too. Have a lovely day!"
Barack Obama is America's Alexander Kerensky
Like Russia's Kerensky, Obama is a lawyer. Like Kerensky, Obama continues a war that our country cannot win. Like Kerensky, Obama loses support of both the left and the right and ultimately becomes an outcast to both. Barack Obama has lost his credibility with the American people with his speech at West Point this evening. The American people have had enough war after 8 long years. America yearns for a real leader with an agenda for the people, by the people and of the people - Barack Obama isn't that guy.
Alexander Kerensky was born in Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) on the Volga River into the family of a secondary school principal, Fyodor Kerensky, whose father was a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church. His mother, Nadezhda Adler, was the daughter of a nobleman, Alexander Adler, head of the Topographical Bureau of the Kazan Military District. Her mother, Nadezhda Kalmykova, was the daughter of a former serf who had bought his freedom before serfdom was abolished in the 19th century, allowing him to become a wealthy Moscow merchant.
Kerensky's father was the headmaster of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) at a secondary school for boys in Simbirsk, and members of the Kerensky and Ulyanov families were friends. In 1889, when Kerensky was eight, his family moved to Tashkent, where his father had been appointed the main inspector of public schools. Kerensky graduated with honors from a Tashkent secondary school in 1899. The same year he entered St. Petersburg University, where he studied history and philology in his first year. The next year he switched to the Law Department and received a law degree in 1904. He worked as a legal counsel to victims of government violence in early December 1905. At the end of the month he was jailed on suspicion of belonging to a militant group. Afterwards he gained a reputation for his work as a defense lawyer in a number of political trials of revolutionaries.
He was elected to the Fourth Duma in 1912 as a member of the Trudoviks, a moderate labour party who were associated with the Socialist Revolutionary Party. A brilliant orator and skilled parliamentary leader as a Socialist Revolutionary and a leader of the socialist opposition to the regime of the ruling Tsar, Nicholas II.
February Revolution of 1917
When the February Revolution broke out in 1917, Kerensky was one of its most prominent leaders: he was member of the Provisional Committee of the State Duma and was elected vice-chairman of the Petrograd Soviet. He simultaneously became the first Minister of Justice in the newly formed Provisional Government. When the Soviet passed a resolution prohibiting its leaders from joining the government, Kerensky delivered a stirring speech at a Soviet meeting. Although the decision was never formalized, he was granted a de facto exemption and continued acting in both capacities.
After the first government crisis over Pavel Milyukov's secret note re-committing Russia to its original war aims on May 2–4, Kerensky became the Minister of War and the dominant figure in the newly formed socialist-liberal coalition government. On 10 May (Old Style), Kerensky started for the front, and visited one division after another, urging the men to do their duty. His speeches were impressive and convincing for the moment, but had little lasting effect. Under Allied pressure to continue the war, he launched what became known as the Kerensky Offensive against the Austro-Hungarian/German South Army on 17 June Old Style. At first successful, the offensive was soon stopped and then thrown back by a strong counter-attack. The Russian Army suffered heavy losses and it was clear – from many incidents of desertion, sabotage, and mutiny – that the Russian Army was no longer willing to attack.
Kerensky was heavily criticised by the military for his liberal policies, which included stripping officers of their mandate (handing overriding control to revolutionary inclined "soldier committees" instead), the abolition of the death penalty, and the presence of various revolutionary agitators at the front. Many officers jokingly referred to commander in chief Kerensky as "persuader in chief".
On 2 July 1917, the first coalition collapsed over the question of Ukraine's autonomy. Following July Days unrest in Petrograd and suppression of the Bolsheviks, Kerensky succeeded Prince Lvov as Russia's Prime Minister. Following the Kornilov Affair at the end of August and the resignation of the other ministers, he appointed himself Supreme Commander-in-Chief as well.
Kerensky's next move, on 15 September was to proclaim Russia a republic, which was quite contrary to the understanding that the Provisional Government should only hold power until the Constituent Assembly should meet to decide Russia's form of rule. He formed a five-member Directory, which consisted of Kerensky himself, minister of foreign affairs Mikhail Tereshchenko, minister of war general Verkhovsky, minister of navy admiral Dmitry Verderevsky and minister of post and telegraph Nikitin. He retained his post in the final coalition government in October 1917 until it was overthrown by the Bolsheviks.
Kerensky's major challenge was that Russia was exhausted after three years of war, while the provisional government did not offer much motivation for a victory outside of continuing Russia's obligations towards its allies. Furthermore, Lenin and his Bolshevik party were promising "peace, land, and bread" under a communist system. The army was disintegrating due to a lack of discipline, which fostered desertion in large numbers.
Kerensky and the other political leaders continued their obligation to Russia's allies by continuing involvement in World War I – fearing that the economy, already under huge stress from the war effort, might become increasingly unstable if vital supplies from France and the United Kingdom were to be cut off. Some also feared that Germany would demand enormous territorial concessions as the price for peace (which indeed happened in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk). The dilemma of whether to withdraw was a great one, and Kerensky's inconsistent and impractical policies further destabilized the army and the country at large.
Furthermore, Kerensky adopted a policy that isolated the right-wing conservatives, both democratic and monarchist-oriented. His philosophy of "no enemies to the left" greatly empowered the Bolsheviks and gave them a free hand, allowing them to take over the military arm or "voyenka" of the Petrograd and Moscow Soviets. His arrest of Kornilov and other officers left him without strong allies against the Bolsheviks, who ended up being Kerensky's strongest and most determined adversaries, as opposed to the right wing, which evolved into the White movement.
October Revolution of 1917
During the Kornilov Affair, Kerensky had distributed arms to the Petrograd workers, and by October most of these armed workers had gone over to the Bolsheviks. On 25–27 October (Old Style) 1917 the Bolsheviks launched the second Russian revolution of the year. Kerensky's government in Petrograd had almost no support in the city. Only one small force, the First Petrograd Women's Battalion, was willing to fight for the government against the Bolsheviks, but this force too crossed over to the revolution without firing a single shot. It took less than 20 hours before the Bolsheviks had taken over the government.
Kerensky escaped the Bolsheviks and went to Pskov, where he rallied some loyal troops for an attempt to retake the capital. His troops managed to capture Tsarskoe Selo, but were beaten the next day at Pulkovo. Kerensky narrowly escaped, and spent the next few weeks in hiding before fleeing the country, eventually arriving in France. During the Russian Civil War he supported neither side, as he opposed both the Bolshevik regime and the White Movement.
Civilians no longer control The Pentagon and the DoD
The Pentagon is out of control and William Gates is not the guy to rein it in. In fact we may be passed the point were reining in Pentagon excess is possible.
As a Marine Corps vet buddy of mine is fond of relating: "When I got out of Vietnam my sergeant said, 'Boys, if your going to make a career of this (the Marines), whenever the politicians in Washington end it, be sure to tattoo your rating on your shoulder. 'Cause you're gonna have it for a long time.'"
The sorry fact of the matter is among the uniformed military war is the fastest and surest method for promotion both in rank and pay. And as we now have a large, standing All Volunteer Force, i.e. professional military, there is no disincentive for the uniformed military to stop waging war.

Military-Industrial-Educational Complex
Since the time of Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex our society is now controlled by the Military-Industrial-Educational complex. With ROTC being required by law in all colleges and universities in 1996, with select schools forming Departments of Military Sciences and host military bases, with Bush and Obama's education program promoting militarization of high schools, with the Department of Defense "Starbase" program for grade schools our educational system has become militarized. See http://www.nonviolentworm.org/NonviolentActions/TheMilitarizationOfCatholicJesuitUniversityEducation for one part of this process: The Militarization of Catholic Jesuit University Education.
The question should now be who to vote for or how to protest but how can we take nonviolent action to root this militarization out of our society. As Pogo says' "We have found the enemy, it is us." Stopping the militarization of our education may be a good place to start. If we cannot even stop "reflexive killing" from being taught at a Catholic Jesuit University how can we ever stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or the endless wars to come.

Vietnam all over again
Eisenhower's real warning was of the military/industrial/congressional complex. Verified by his daughter. The invasion of Afghanistan was planned months before 9-11. We went in for the oil pipeline. We stay for the oil. And in the meantime Halliburton and the other defense contractors make billions to trillions. In both Iraw and Afghanistan, we have done everything we could to make the countries unstable so we would have an excuse to stay. The military depend on the instability so they can do what they were trained for - war. The Blackwater people number around 150,000? They get paid thousands of dollars a week to blow people up, rape, torture, and kill as they please with no chance of retribution from anyone. They have a very heavy stack in keeping the entire Middle East in a mess to keep that money rolling in. Then there was evidence the herione traffic in Afghanistan funded our governments black ops projects. Too many people have too much at stack with these wars continuing and expanding. We are not their for the people of Iraq or Afghanistan. Karzai is a Bush/US Oil stooge. So many millionaires will come out of this. And we the people keep getting the bill.
We need a third party for the people. And I don't understand why the republican party is still a viable party. They should have gone in the dust bin decades ago.
No change
Face it, we were fooled into electing George W Bush II. Nothing has changed. The military-industrial complex is making billions now and the generals will be cashing in shortly. As long as we make these idiotic wars extremely profitable, they will continue in perpetuity.
If we took profit out of the mix and passed a law forbidding high ranking military officers from working in the defense industry for at least five years after they left the military, our solders would be home in 3 to 6 months. The generals are scratching the backs of their future employers and their future employers are now flush with cash and laughing all the way to the bank.
Winning Wars and Protecting America.
jlouisecarl
If anyone still thinks that Republicans are better than Demorats at either winning wars or protecting America, then they must be living in an alternative universe. From the Great Depression through World War II, Vietnam, the multiple recessions since then (especially our current one), 9-11, the drowning of and failed reconstruction of New Orleans, the insane invasion of Iraq, and the failure to actually seek out and distroy the perpetraters of 9-11, leading to the current mess in Afganistan, the Republicans were in charge every time. In my view, Eisenhower was the last Republican that was worth a plugged nickle, largely because he gave us the interstate system and gave warning (since ignored by HIS party!) to watch out for the military industrial complex. He was also the last Republican to end a war with anything other than ignonomy. The last century has been a continuous time of the Republicans failing the American people in every way imaginable, what a pity that so many of them haven't noticed!!
Nixon was the last moderate Republican president.
Without trying to glorify Nixon, he was truly the last moderate Repub President. Remember, during his administration we got the Dept of Education and the EPA. With all his faults, he did some good.
Is PNAC really only a paradigm from the past?
The metastasized cancer is fossil fuel dependence, reinforced by the PNAC insistence from the 90s that Middle Eastern reserves are vital to American security. But tonight the true intervention logic will be covered with platitudes on terrorism, predictably reminiscent of the Bush era. No doubt, there will be some rehashing of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the claims that a surge in troops is for the good of the Afghanistan people, which is akin to beating a child into major injury or death while telling him it's for his own good.
Perhaps the words-Taliban, insurgents, and Al Queada will be injected with greater fear to blur the distinction. Never mind their presence stand an excellent chance of increasing in proportion to the occupation. When the only world superpower insists it has the right to be in a poor, undeveloped country through its use of advanced weaponry and oftentimes brute force, no doubt insurgents and the Taliban are seen as the primary defense of home, tribe and village and they are afforded the respect of David fighting Goliath. As we're encouraged to fear the native population, our national hubris will be fed by proclamations of our right to be there and how they'll be helped by military presence. Again, that's like beating someone to a pulp saying it's for their own good.
There was an article in the AP a few days back where a state department official was insisting that the surge was for he Afghan people; therefore, it will be an Afghanistan surge, not an American surge. I'm afraid we have a lot of similar logic to look forward to in tonight's address. I hope I'm wrong and that more cogent and realistic explanations will be given. But surely, defeating Al Quaeda, which had about 96 members in Afghanistan with the last estimate several months ago and has a global cell presence, will hardly be a cogent or reasonable explanation for the ultimate cost of trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives.
It's about pipes, like TAPI and its competitors. It's a war for resources, this time the transportation of them. In the meantime, the Afghanistan battles could very well reinforce the ones in its nearby neighbor of Pakistan, further destabilizing a nuclear nation held together by threads. It's a scary scenario to think about for long and one that the journalist,Greenwald, has examined.
I don't think I'm unique at all in the American population for my concerns. Not only does the Afghan escalation increase my chances to be harmed by the consequence of increased terrorism, whether I'm home or abroad, it will substantially weaken the already dismal state of the American economy which we all depend on.
Will Voters punish pro-war Dems by ignoring the 2010 Election?
It is obvious the 2008 Election was all about getting a Democrat that was going to be Very Different from Bush, on Stopping the Wars, Bringing our troops home, on Not Torturing, on Prosecuting Those That Did Torture and Conspired To Torture, on Secrecy, on having a Transparent Administration, and so on.
It is becoming Obvious That We Got More Of Bush! So what do we do if Obama, Holder and our Congressional Democrats continue to Ignore We Voters right up to the 2010 and 2012 Elections?
Will Voters Just Stay Home? Ignore the Elections? Tear Up Their Ballots?
Maybe the Dems would then begin to understand that their lies and arrogance will cost them dearly.
