Until the sudden and tragic murders of both Kennedys and Martin Luther King, the NRA was primarily for hunters and sportsmen and women.  But with every highly publicized shooting the various anti gun activists and politicians ready to capitalize on the tragedies began pushing for more and more redundant laws which did  nothing to stop the person who does not obey the laws.  For a long time NRA preached enforcement of existing laws and has fought to keep firearms ownership a right of private citizens with the further right that the government would never have a list of gun owners whereby it could round up all the guns.  Please remember that all the totalitarian governments and murderous dictatorships in the past hundred years began their oppression by taking away citizens guns.  It did not matter whether those guns were for hunting or self defense.  Fortunately in these United States the supreme court has finally ruled that firearms ownership for any legal purpose is every sane and law abiding citizen's individual right.  Like it or not this right is the main guarantee for the preservation of all the rest.  If we only lived in a perfect world there would be no guns, no tyranny, no crazies, no criminals.  The American psyche is very adolescent in nature with its aspects of absolutism, entitlement, and poor abilities in comprehending or accepting nuanced interpretations of life experiences.  This is a bad combination in which to place a firearm.  However, with ownership of firearms in the multi millions and an estimate of enough guns to place one in the hands of every one of the over three hundred million citizens it is doubtful that this country will outright ban guns.  Are there other ways of dealing with the problem?  Perhaps instead of spending almost eight hundred billion dollars a year on maintaining American military empire all over the world that money could be used to educate, create meaningful jobs, healthcare and other programs to help the average American citizen in his or her pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.  Will there always be the occassional crazy person?  Yes.  Can we minimize the number of angry and powerless people who might go over the edge? We could if we chose to do so. In the meantime will more laws control those who do not obey the laws? No. Will banning some guns keep the criminals from obtaining an unbanned gun or something else with which to injure and kill people? No, of course not.  For those who drone on about such laws and bans I ask that you really think about the problem and find a solution that positively helps all people...even the angry, crazy, over the edge people. That is much more of a challenge and it demands more than laws and bans.

I am so very sorry to be living in a country where the gun culture lives!!

What to me and I'm sure others is the incomprehensible incongruity of the gun nut troglodytic mind. Asinine whining and irrationally claiming that the preserving of the "... to right to keep and bear arms..." is required to protect law abiding Americans from usurpation of their constitutional rights. However, despite millions of these intellectually and historisitically challenged doofuses keeping and bearing arms in even more millions, the federal government has systematically used the Bill of Rights to extend  the rights of real persons to sociopathic corporations to the detriment of real live human persons including them.Then it  created no knock laws, engaged warrantless searches and seizures, denial of habeas corpus, wide spread disfranchisement of voting rights, invasion of privacy, wanton police brutality, harassment of reporters, merging of church and state... all, flagrant violations of the the Bill of Rights without any of these alleged uber patriots so much as not only not firing a shot but not even making a peep.

Their cry of 2nd Amendment rights has definitely hurt this country. People are not traveling to Mexico (Me included!) because of the threat of the drug cartels with their high powered weapons. The Mexican government asked for help as they feel the weapons are being purchased in this country. I'm sure many foreign citizens are reluctant to visit the USA because this country has so much gun related violence.

Common sense is needed. Hunters don't use or need these high powered, millitary style guns. Most hunters probably don't own them. Let's enact sane laws that allow hunters to enjoy their sport, people to have reasonable types of weapons for self defense and get rid of the rest.

Put the NRA on notice we want honest dialog about 2nd Amendment rights and won't tolerate their terrorist fear mongering any longer.
