Sarah Palin Goes Down Cheap on Amazon: Just $9 for "Going Rogue," A $29.00 Book. WTF?

By Mark Karlin

Not many new books get a 69% discount before they are even released. In fact, BuzzFlash -- which sells progressive books -- has never seen such a slashed price for a book before it came out like the $9.00 Amazon.com is charging for "Going Rogue."
Yes, Palin and "Going Rogue" -- not released until November 17 -- are going down cheap, at a price usually reserved for what are called "remainder" books, the surplus stock of a book that is dramatically discounted.
Of course if you give it away, you can have a popular product, so it's no surprise that as of October 19, "Going Rogue" is number 4 on Amazon.
And the right-wing think tank media infrastructure, which is so successfuly integrated, is indeed giving it away!
The right-wing rag site, NewsMax, is offering "Going Rogue" free with a subscription, or for a cost of -- coinky dink -- $9.00.
For close to four decades, the GOP and the right wing have synergistically intertwined -- with the backing of the oligarchy -- think tanks, electoral politics, the media, and book sales (with cross-promotion of books and think tank "fellows" on the programs of RWNJ media shills).
This is something that BuzzFlash and some others have noted is critically lacking among the progressives. A lot of it is due to the limited financial backing received by progressive causes (just ask us at BuzzFlash), and a lot of it has to do with a more well-oiled structure on the right.
BuzzFlash will be selling the parody comic book version of "Going Rogue" (called "Going Rouge"), but it won't be steeply discounted because one of our IT consultants is self-publishing it. That's how it goes among progressives; no big money backers, just committed people building democracy with sweat equity.
Meanwhile, the right wing knows how to practically give away books and get them to the top of the bestseller lists.
They sure do go down cheap, don't they?

BOOKS ARE SO OVERPRICED ANYWAY
BBF
Now that the Palin book is down to a reasonable price...I might buy 2 or 3 and donate some to the local library.
Sorry, I can't resist this one:
Sarah Palin Goes Down Cheap on Amazon --You can cut the words 'on Amazon,' and you'll still be right. That's why McInsane picked the polar bear-killing terrorist as his VP.

Fire Sale!
I was just thinking about what Palin's book might be good for. If it were guaranteed to burn - and it was free - it might be good to throw a few into the woodstove this winter.
Just checked Amazon
and yes, their Micheal Moore & Al Franken books are all selling at a discount. However, none of them are newly released (or as in the case of whats'ername's ghostwritten work of self fiction, have yet to be released) so it's like comparing apples & oranges.
Wake Up, Mark! Progressives Make Far Less Money
With all due respect, Mark, the time has come when you're going to have to face up to the fact that progressives make far less money than conservatives, for a variety of reasons -- not the least of which is that many progressives shun high-paying corporate jobs because the nature of the capitalist beast is simply incompatible with progressive activism.
And there is, unfortunately, still a significant segment of the so-called "progressive community" that remain die-hard socialists at heart and want nothing to do with making a lot of money. I've said for more than 40 years that progressives will never be known for raising a lot of money because of their lifelong aversion to the capitalist impulse.
Case in point: Senator Bernie Sanders of my home state of Vermont. Throughout his career as an elected official, Sanders -- as progressive as they come -- has never lived beyond his salary, whether as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, a member of the House of Representatives or as a U.S. Senator. Just take a look at his annual financial disclosure forms and tax returns, if you don't believe me. He's "Mr. Frugality" -- even a tightwad -- compared to his colleagues when it comes to his personal lifestyle.
Far too many conservatives have fallen under the spell of the "Prosperity Gospel" of speakers who believe that "God wants you to be rich." Nonsense! Jesus said that a rich man can never enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he gives up his riches and lives a modest life.
To expect progressives to match the Right in the money department is a pipe dream. Progressives have to make do with what they've got.
old trick
The Right has been pulling this trick for a long time. In publishing, a distributor places an order for books and is allowed to return unsold copies 6 months later for a full refund. Usually the distributor orders what they think they can sell. Conservative publishing houses and distributors typically order far more copies of, say, Bernard Goldberg's latest, than anyone will ever buy in order to place the book highly on bestseller lists to maintain the illusion that there's a 50/50 split in America between right and left. Then Goldberg takes to the air on the same circuit as authors people actually read, like Michael Moore. The actual books end up either being destroyed or handed out free by right-wing groups to people who don't read them then they end up in the thrift store.
Price War
From what I understand, Amazon is in a price war with Walmart. "W" was selling books for $10 with free shipping on their website. So Amazon did the same. Then "W" lowered their prices to $9 and Amazon followed suit. I haven't checked, but hopefully some books by Al Franken or Michael Moore will also get this discount!
Not even at a 100% discount!
Frankly, I would not want that rogue book, even if it was a) autographed by the real author; and b) if they paid me $9 to take it. I'll stick with Walgreens toilet paper, thanks for asking.
