Government-Paid Medical Care Pulled Seniors Up Out of Poverty: They Should Remember That
BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG
By Mark Karlin
In the post World War II era, as America prospered and built a solid middle class (not being economically decimated by companies -- as we are now -- with no allegiance to the U.S. moving jobs overseas), there was a dirtly little secret: a large segment of our seniors lived in poverty. This was, in large part, due to medical care that exhausted their savings.
Then Medicare was passed in the '60s, amidst vociferous operation from the Republican Party that called it -- you guessed -- "socialist" and "Communist." The program was so succcessful that it lifted seniors from being one of our neediest classes of citizens to generally living (along with Social Security, a governnment pension plan) comfortably -- and children replaced them as the most neediest in our society.
Now, the GOP -- which has never relented its philosophical oppostition to Medicare until this year's hypocritical ploy to scare seniors that Medicare will be cut to allow for expanded healthcare coverage for the rest of America -- has the majority of seniors opposing general healthcare coverage for their fellow citizens out of fear. Of course, fear is the Republican Party's only weapon to advance their major interest: greedy, gluttonous wealth for the few.
Then there are still the white senior Republicans who claim that they are opposed to "socialized" medicine, but I have not yet read of one American Republican senior turning in his or her Medicare card out of opposition to "socialized medicine" (it is really government medical insurance; the government provides no medical care in the Medicare program) for themselves.
Right now, the most vulnerable age group for lack of health insurance is in the 50-65 year-old-range. There are many reasons for this, but all of them lead to the same reality: this age group is the most medically vulnerable pre-Medicare insurance pool risk.
As such, insurance on the market is prohibitive for the unemployed of this age span, and employers are less likely to hire older workers for a variety of reasons, but one of them is their insurance costs.
I have read and heard of many stories of staggering medical cost debt for people in this age group, the kind that sucks you into bankruptcy and destiution.
Seniors with Medicare should realize that this nation, the Democrats, gave them a gift in the '60s. They cannot, by any logical standard, be permitted to adopt the Republican standard of greed and oppose government administered health plans for the rest of America, just because America gave them Medicare and now they want to close the gate to newcomers.
Many months ago, BuzzFlash suggested that Obama would have had the "framing" edge on this debate if he had just proposed Medicare Part E for everyone under 65.
No one, not even the Republicans, are attacking Medicare this year, because the seniors are a key swing block in influencing how "healthcare reform" turns out. Medicare for everyone is a bold concept; simple, clean and proven, as compared to the "Obama Healthcare Reform Plan," which remains a moving target.
BuzzFlash supports a single-payer system, but realistically, right now we believe that as "healthcare reform" advances in the House and Senate, an amendment should be offered to lower Medicare to the age of 50. This will open up job opportunities for people 50-65, make them more financially secure, and move us closer to single payer for all Americans.
Seniors need either renounce Medicare and pay their own medical bills or support Medicare for everyone, starting with the highly vulnerable 50-65 year old bulge.

Obama & single payer
I agree with the good Dr. whch is why Obama was my third choice-way behind Cong. Kucinnich. I don't know why anyone would be suprised. He doesn't belive in making waves or rocking the boat. The boat needs to be SUNK!!
The Left Dreams On
The combination of Social Security and Medicare is responsible for lifting seniors from poverty. Why would Mr. Karlin be so naive as to think that Americans of any age would react logically or rationally or even be familiar with the history of their own country. Mr. "Change You Can Believe In" has botched this legislative process so badly that progressives need to rethink their backing of this Corporatist Democrat. The last President with any guts was JFK and they all know now what happens to anybody that actually tries to improve the lot of the people. Obama was this country's last chance but the Fat Lady has cleared her throat and has microphone in hand.
Blood Simple
The movie "Blood Simple" opens with the narrator saying "...but what I know about is Texas. And down here, you're on your own." Unfortunately, our tradition of rugged indiviualism and go-it-alone thinking coupled with fear being generated by corporate and political (is that redundant yet?) interests blind people to the fact that we can ALL prosper and thrive by pooling resources. Medicare and Social Security should be re-framed as programs created by the people, for the people and as protection from greedy corporations and government corruption. They are OUR programs paid for with OUR taxes for OUR benefit. In addition to expanding Medicare, lower the eligibility age for Social Security to 55. More people would retire and more young people (at lower healthcare costs) would get jobs. Blood simple.
almost blood simple
* social security at 62 has a lifetime reduced benefit and that same logic could be applied down to 60 or even 55. the only requirement would be that a person be eligible for social security. i.e. 40 quarters of covered work and payment of the fica tax. both systems are already in place with their rules and procedures pretty well worked out over these many decades. a simple law change to the eligible age should be easy enough, although i'm not sure this would put more people to work at any age. besides, many people want to work after they have 'retired', so there have to be jobs available, though the young would have preference over the 'retired'.
* however, 'medicare part e' should be so bone simple even a republican congresscritter should be able to understand it. how to pay for it? how about raising the medicare tax rate to 2% on all income? that should get the ball rolling. other than those two changes -- optional medicare for all and raising the tax to 2% -- i don't see anything else that needs changing. maybe returning to the u.s. government the authority to negotiate with the drug companies for lowest prices and expanded formulary [?] would also help reduce costs. none of this is that complicated, but it does get in the way of the greed and profiteering of health insurers, big pharma, etc. \\ Born Free - “those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -- b. franklin, 1759
Health care and socialism
Go here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/socialism.asp
to read a summation of the terror felt by those who only listen. It is a speech in audio by Ronald Reagan before he became a politician, which uses an unverified quote by Norman Thomas that equates liberalism with socialism and also says the American people will vote for it without realizing it and, bam! we are a socialist nation. The horror!
After reading this, I finally understood the ongoing campaign against Medicare, Social Security, and all government programs (include FDA, highway system by Eisenhower the Republican) and the instantaneous, uncontrolled fear and rage over Obama's proposal for improved health care at a reduced cost to the GDP. I am still incredulous at how terrified intelligent, educated persons can be from hearing anyone who mentions socialized medicine.
Remember one thing: Reagan was an actor. Hear his mellifluous, mesmerizing tones.
Oh, yeah, reagan was an actor
A "B" movie actor who was already a doddering old man when he was sworn in the first time. He was a FIGUREHEAD, pure and simple.
The REAL power behind the throne? Why, poppie bush, of course, the same scumbag who hid behind his own (also expendable) son years later.
The bush crime family is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Anyone for jeb in '12?
Exactly.. Reagan WAS a figurehead.... BUT !!!
The new Michael Moore movie showed something that was truly stunning.. even EARLY in his FIRST TERM, long before Don Regan became his Chief of Staff, President Ronald Reagan was... already on the edge of senile and/or Alzheimers!
That said, very few "Liberal" critics of Reagan GIVE HIM THE CREDIT HE IS DUE, for INSISTING that he be given the opportunity to make those peace treaties with Gorbachev. Don't forget, Reagan's handlers thought that THEY were in control... and the "DC ESTABLISHMENT" "experts" NEVER believed that such far reaching DISARMAMENT treaties (not just non-proliferation treaties) would ever be signed.
But when Reagan had first assumed office, he was given the military's "Doomsday" nuclear war briefing, and he (like all previous presidents) was stunned if not horrified by the sheer catastrophe that hung over humanity (and Western Europe in particular), especially with those hair-trigger 2-minutes launch-to-impact IRBM missiles (Pershings & Soviet equivalent.... mobile, able to operate in remote sites, independent... the perfect weapons for a "rouge" commander to start WWIII by wiping out a major European capital or three.
It may be ironic that a B-movie actor who was a Right-Wing corporate propagandist did MORE FOR WORLD PEACE - by GIVING Gorbachev an opportunity to go to his generals & politiburo to seek a way out of the INEVITABLE nuclear confrontation - than any "liberal" Peace advocates anyone can name, but there it is. Thom Hartmann ought to give Reagan a break -
It is FAR MORE THE BANKERS behind Reagan - and the BLUE-COLLAR, working stiff, UNION-WORKERS who for the past 3 decades EMPOWERED the Right-Wing Republican agenda - who have EMPOWERED the Right-Wing agenda - than the actor who was long past due for retirement when he first became president.
Reagan was a Corporatist...big money "planted" him
And Don Regan took the reins and ran with the power, all for the Wall Street Robber Barons..its still going on today, a good portion of the public bought into the idea that our "people run-Government" was bad..but, a Corporate run government was good..after-all, the Corporations spent a lot of money (that they stole form us) to brainwash them into defending and believing in unregulated "free-market Capitalism"....that the trickle down theory was good for America...(those government subsidies and tax breaks for the big Corporations were good, gave the Corporations more money to brainwash and buy Congress with, sort of to "catapult the propaganda")...as for the "Grey Hairs"..most of them who are using Medi-Care today...have no idea what it was like for a sick/dying Senior before 1965 living on a fixed income of social security (another Democratic program the the Republicans fought and are still fighting against)..back when the Democrats fought the Republicans to get that Medi-Care for them
