Joe Wilson is the Disease for Which Democracy Does Not Have Insurance to Cure.

Despite his impassioned and compassionate speech of Wednesday night, Barack Obama needs to understand that Joe Wilson is the disease for which democracy does not have insurance to cure.
Let me start with this fairly assured speculation: Wilson's outburst was designed by the GOP corporate PR fronts to distract media coverage following Obama's cogent and compelling remarks to Congress.
In the summer of our healthcare reform discontent, Wilson's unprecedented assault on the dignity of the American presidency was part of a long-line of PR stunts to create chaos out of the effort to insure the health of most Americans: the Teabaggers, the Birthers, the Town Hall Mobs, the anti-President "Know Nothing" Parents pulling their kids from school the day before Obama's speech, and then the shocking outburst of Joe Wilson, which he apparently shouted twice.
Never mind that Strom Thurmond's ex-aide was actually the liar, the evolution of politics into spectacle allowed the likely planned inflammatory outburst to dominate at least the following three news cycles, instead of the substance and soaring appeal of President Obama to pass legislation to benefit the national community.
Wilson is the prototypical Neo-Confederate, Glenn Beck, racist, psychotic Republican. He supports waving the Confederate flag. He makes Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy, look like a moderate, and is known for making slanderous statements about the "patriotism" of others and upholding the racist legacy of Strom Thurmond, his mentor.
So Wilson was the perfect guy to distract the media by committing the unprecedented act of disrupting a Presidential speech by calling the President of the United States a liar. In the Bush Administration, if a Democrat had done that he would have been expelled from Congress. But Wilson just issued a non-apology apology and then went on television the next day to repeat the lie about the healthcare reform bill, and the media let him get away with prevaricating about his accusation.
The Republicans are brilliant at manipulating the lapdog, sensational, spectacle oriented media, and they did it again.
Mission accomplished.
That was no spontaneous outburst. Joe Wilson was likely told what to do and when to do it.
This was part of a summer of planned set-ups by corporate and GOP front PR firms.
Unfortunately, after 30 years of the GOP leading the corporate media around by a leash, the Obama White House has joined a long list of clueless Democratic leaders.
The media is the message, and Joe Wilson's handlers used him just right to turn the President's speech coverage into a circus.
Until the Democrats start understanding the importance of theater, emotion, and corporate ownership of the media, they are sailing upwind even though the majority of Americans are on their side on almost all progressive issues.
Until the Democrats have a media strategy and ownership epiphany, Joe Wilson is the disease for which democracy does not have insurance to cure.

Waterloo or Weimar?
If the public option fails, it will be an exciting victory for those who are gleefully using National Socialist tactics to bring democracy to an end in America. A defeat of Obama in 2012 will not just be his Waterloo, it will be the death of the Weimar Republic all over again. Who will save us from Reichsmarshall Limbaugh and Josef Murdoch once this thing really gets traction? If our political leaders turn their heads and pretend nothing is happening now, how will anyone be able to take the power away from the nuts once they have secured it? We need ferocious and merciless opposition to the dissembly of our democracy from our leaders whom we have already chosen. If they fail, then we fail, and a new and even more horrific war could envelope the earth.
Corporate Fascism
This morning, on the front page of my local Boise "red state" rag, which is owned by McClatchy, is a news story lead-in that reads "Obama Heckler gains support from outburst" (bold-type). In the paper's "Nation/World" section is the arcicle itself which reads " Heckler sparks passion with outburst" (again, in bold type, only this time larger). As I write this comment, on the cnn.com website is a main page item that reads "Wilson raises more than $200K after outburst (bold-type). When one loads the story, in the right margin is a small bullet point that reads "Wilson's 2010 opponent has raised $750,000 since incident".
Both of these large corporations deliberately chose to focus on Wilson's outrageous outburst and the fact that he has garnished support and a fresh $200K since his political misdemeanor. Unmentioned in the McClatchy article (which originated from New York Times News Service) and barely mentioned in the CNN story was the real story: that, since his outburst, Wilson has had his butt kicked by a factor of 3 1/2 to 1 by fund raising his political opponent, Rob Miller.
Bad decisions on the same subject matter, made by three corporate giants: McClatchy, New York Times News Service and CNN? Or examples of corporate fascism pulling the strings on the Grand 'Ol Party of sell-outs. I don't belive for a moment that the GOP leads the massive corporate news media "around by the leash". As the old adage goes, "follow the money"! The Grand Old Party is on the take. For that matter, so is the grand old Democrat Party. Billions of insurance dollars are at stake. Who do you think is holding the leash, and who is wearing it?
Censure
Wilson should immediately be censured. The Democrats need to get on the same page about this. Failure to censure might well create a breakdown of the procedures. Though I do recall cheering when a Republican committee chair improperly ignored a valid objection by the ranking Democrat who was "hold the fort" in the meeting. He protested and, after being given short shrift, told the chairman, "You're a fruit cake, a little fruit cake." But then the Democrats weren't doing this as a way to break down the process or perpetuate lies.
Censure?--heck he should be scoured and cooked
---by all and specially by his own party which demanded, yes demanded the highest respect for bush AKA 'el stupido' at all times, even when wiping hs glasses on some other ladies sweater, or giving a backrub to Merkel.
But these guys are elected and in that they are to be called "honorable". We do not need Democrats to get on the same page, we need to elect Democrats who pledge to be on the same page as those who elect them.
What we have now is a blank page which we wave around and 'hope' the elected will write in something good. We need to fill in that blank page and hold them to it.
Pelosi says, "censure is off the table"!
The real blame falls into DINO Pelosi's lap for legitimizing Wilson's uncivil behavior and lies.
She and the rest of the Blue Dogs and DINO-Fascist traitors need to be voted out of office in their upcoming Democratic Primaries. The same goes for DINO traitor Obama in three years in his Presidential Democratic Primary.
It's a daily thing for Wilson
Wilson shows his ignorance on a daily basis in the one minute speeches on the House floor. He's the one who concludes each vitriolic spewing with "God bwess our twoops and we will neve foget 911." Guys like him can't accept the fact that we have a person of color as our President, believe the Civil War is still being fought, and the South is winning.
Disease--
---The way to approach a 'disease' is to identify it, contain it, isolate it, and give appropiate treament.
The rpug disease is so large, its spread is like a plague, that a 'hope' for a cure is reduced to-- 'a hope', just words.
Was that not what the election theme was all about? My impression, thus far, is that the Pres thinks that a cold wet blanket could be tossed on this feverous croud and its temperature (temperment) would come down, or if not its temperature would rage high and the population would be overly offended and leave it isolated. Not working.
Time to put some strong music into the mix.
Oh, not so bad
Sure, it was a distraction. But the numbers have gone up for Obama and the plan. And Wilson will have a stronger challenger next year.
You're not going to convice the freepers or the Fox News watchers, but other than that, middle America isn't so scared any more.
I'm hopeful something meaningful will pass, and that as years go by, we can build on it. But we need to understand that this is a war on the people by the profiteers, and never forget who the enemy is.
I'm with you
Wilson may prove to be his own worst enemy come his next election.

might enable science to get the folks like Joe Wilson, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Virginia Foxx, Orly Taitz, the "birthers", the "deathers", etc., a few more active, better working, less deceased brain cells
I agree with Mark, the
I agree with Mark, the biggest lie of all was that Joe Wilsons faux pas was not spontaneous but a planned outburst designed to turn the Presidents speech into a circus.
What I want to know
Why is it that these subversive actions continue to work after so many years? Are the Democrats too stupid to figure out that they are being played? Clearly there are some smart people in the Democratic Party and in the administration, so what other reason is there for this compliance with the GOP game than they are too dense to catch on? Either through blackmail or bribery, the Democrats are throwing the election after the fact. Everything they are doing is playing into the triumphant return of the GOP to power and keeping the progressives and liberals distracted while it is happening.
This subjective conclusion leads to a second question: why are so many people oblivious to what's going on? Is it that their attention spans and memories have been damaged or controlled in some manner? Enquiring minds should want to know.
Don't know if Wilson was coached, Mark
But the outcome is as you discribe.
I US representative I have certainly never heard of is suddenly catapulted into the limelight for boorish behavior, who is lionized on FauxNews for same.

The Prognosis is Grave
An interesting take by Mark, using a neo-confederate back-bencher to heckle the first African-American President. There is something very ugly brewing in this country. Republicans, beginning with Nixon's Southern Strategy (with a big assist from fascist Pat Buchanan) have used race as a wedge issue to win elections. Now that the GOP has become a rump party of racist Southern know-nothing Limbaugh listening Beck/Hannity watching rabble-rousers, the potential for violence in this country continues to ratchet up on a daily basis. On another note, last week this writer posted on this site that progressives would be sold down the river by this President on Wednesday evening. And only President Obama could do it in such an emotionally uplifting way. The key language in the speech, for those of us hoping for true reform was, and I paraphrase, if there is another way to provide competition without a public option, I am willing to listen. The public option is not and end unto itself. Uh Oh! Realistically there is no other way to provide competition. The public option IS the reform. When one takes away the new get tough stance, and the "calling out" of the misinformers, and the moving tribute to Ted Kennedy, one is left with the unalterable fact that this President is no LBJ when it comes to moving landmark legislation through Congress. He more resembles Bill Clinton and the DLC corporate-lite philosophy.
