The Flea Biting the Blue Dogs — Home State Democrats

c

By Steven C. Day

If the sight of Max Baucus spinning in a circle on the public option in health care reform – looking for all the world like a blue dog chasing his own tail -– surprises you, it shouldn't. He's a man torn between two worlds: on the one hand, like so many other blue dogs today ("blue dog" in the sense of conservative Democrats as opposed to the specific House Blue Dog Coalition), he's having the time of his life playing the power broker as one of the centrist gods of the Beltway. And as we liberals never end bemoaning, this makes him a hero to the "Villagers," — a species generally personified by liberals in the person of the dependably annoying David Broder. Besides, health care industry campaign money spends just fine.

But on the other hand, as elected officials, the blue dogs, must, of course, also attend to the hometown folks.

Now, I suspect that to most liberal coastal types (and other liberals in rock-solid Democratic areas) this looks like a fairly risk free venture for the blue dogs, who, after all, generally represent conservative or battleground states anyway. But there's a catch: in fact there's a whole pot full of catches: they're called Democrats.

Speaking as a Democrat in Kansas, I'll let you in on a little secret. Democrats in red states actually aren't much more conservative than Democrats in blue states. There are just a lot less of us. Sure, Democrats may be, on average, a little more moderate in places such as Kansas, based upon our upbringing and surroundings, but the difference is far less dramatic than blue state Democrats tend to assume.

Believe it or not, we get that Internet thingy out here in the sticks, too. We can (and many of us do) read the same liberal rabble-rousing stuff as the rest of you (some of us even write some of it). We have colleges here in the flyover states, book stores, and even cable television. I can actually watch Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Jon Stewart here without getting my cable canceled as a result!

And this can present a bit of a problem for blue dogs such as Baucus. Democrats, in general, are starting to get a wee bit pissed off at our elected representatives these days due to their general gutlessness (think in terms of a nuclear powered Old Faithful getting ready to erupt). And it isn't just Democrats in California and New York who feel that way: it's also Democrats in places such as Kansas and Texas, and even more so for those in Montana, a state which has been trending blue.

In general, Democrats in red (and reddish) states are acutely aware of our minority status (you're constantly reminded of it by all the wanted posters — "Wanted Dead or Alive, Liberals and Other Like Vermin, Reward Offered"). As a result, we tend to be understanding of the "moderateness" of our Democratic politicians. Face it: Ted Kennedy ain't gonna get elected in Kansas, Nebraska, or even Montana.

But this understanding has its limits — and right now, it's straining under the pressure of increasing partisan anger. And, again, this has to be even more true in a battleground state such as Montana.

Turning to the specific issue of health care reform, this could present an opportunity to bring some wayward blue dogs back into the fold, at least to a degree. Sorry, but it won't be liberal advocacy ads that will do it, at least by themselves. No, the ticket is precisely what is happening right now in Montana: a rebellion among home state Democrats.

Rank and file Democrats can't carry the day for our candidates in red or even reddish states: we don't have the votes. But Democratic candidates still need our support, which means that our advocacy can provide some check on "bad conduct."

It might just be that the secret to bringing real health care reform back to life from its apparent early grave involves nothing more complex than the advocacy of just a few good Democrats — from some very unlikely sounding places.

There would be MORE Democrats in Kansas, IF...!!!

"Speaking as a Democrat in Kansas, I'll let you in on a little secret. Democrats in red states actually aren't much more conservative than Democrats in blue states. There are just a lot less of us."

Thanks for the comment, Steven.  Now here's the dirty secret:  IF it weren't for  the treacherous NEO-CON TAKEOVER of the "Democrat" Party, there would be A LOT MORE Democratic voters - in Red States, AND in Blue-States alike!

This is the heart of the conumdrum of Thomas Franks 2004 book, "What's The Matter with Kansas?" - how do Right-Wingers get Kansans (and other American) voters to VOTE AGAINST THEIR OWN economic SELF-INTEREST?! http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Matter-Kansas-Conservatives-America/dp/0805073396

And to cut to the chase, the answer is  "ethnic conflict 101":   Righties PLAY the FEAR and HATE CARD  against other "thems," as in "us vs them."

As in "Moral Values Americans vs those evil, TAX & SPEND librul Democrats".  (This fear-mongering works even better if you can point to scary, "criminal minorities" who look  different and have different cultures & languages, and if you present said minorities as "stealing your tax dollars" - EVEN IF  the rural, "Red"  heartland states are by & large NET federal TAX DOLLAR RECIPIENTS, that is WELFARE QUEENS,  vs. their urban, blue-state neighbors!)

People in the stock market will tell you that GREED & FEAR are THE TWO DOMINANT EMOTIONS of the markets, also known as "Fight or Flight."  So the "us vs. them"   FEAR CARD  is an ancient, strong, and effective tactic, even today.

What is amazing is that the 'Neo-Con'  "Neo-Conservative"  (or "neo-Liberal")  TAKEOVER of the "Democrat" Party ENABLES the RIGHT-WING  (blatantly neo-Confederate) Republicans  to  PRETEND that the MAJORITY of Americans ARE HAPPY with the existing Health Care system!

By "Neo-Cons" I mean "Democrats" like  JOE LIEBERMAN, RAHM EMANUEL, DIANNE FEINSTEIN, JANE HARMAN, Ron Klein,  and other PRO-WAR 'Democrats,' who SABOTAGE the GENUINE  Democratic agenda, because the pro-War Neo Cons KNOW that a GENUINELY DEMOCRATIC agenda would INVESTIGATE and REVERSE  so many more  of Bush & Cheney's war policies.

(Which the Neo-Con DOMINATED Obama White House KEEPS IN PLACE,  including the SECRET TORTURE GULAGS,  secret BAILOUTS for connected bankers, a US energy policy that CONTINUES to SHORT-CIRCUIT SOLAR INVESTMENT, US "economic policy" that does very little to help homeowners in foreclosure,  the Obama/Holder "Justice" Department that KEEPS MANY of KARL ROVE's HANDPICKED REPUBLICAN PROSECUTORS IN PLACE (the better to TERRORIZE any future ANTI-WAR DEMOCRATS should the need arise),  and of course the Obama Neo-Con dominated White House is DOING VERY LITTLE to EXPOSE the FAMILY-BANKRUPTING and PATIENT KILLING  atrocities of the current "for profit,"  "HEALTH CARE DENIAL"  system!

IF you think I am mistaken, or am exaggerating, just ask this SIMPLE question:

"EIGHT long months into the Obama presidency, JUST WHAT IS his 'Health Care Reform' plan?"

answer:  Obama DOES NOT HAVE a plan that you can point to, because his EMANUEL/Lieberman/Golddamn-Sachs Neo-Cons DON'T WANT REFORM !!

Joe Lieberman counsels:  "Health Care Reform FOR AMERICANS may have to WAIT"!

  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/24/health/policy/24talkshows.html

...while ISRAEL citizens, SUBSIDIZED by US TAXPAYER BILLIONS,  ALREADY HAVE  European-style "SOCIALIZED" medical care!!!

Joe Lieberman IS AN uber-Neo-Con AMERICAN-families HATING  hypocrite - and the ENTIRE Obama White House abjectly  REFUSES to put a GOOD PR campaign forward  to NEUTRALIZE Lieberman and the other  Blue-Dog "con-servative"  Health Care reform  OBSTRUCTIONISTS  - the wishes of THE VAST MAJORITY of DEMOCRATIC VOTERS be damned!!!

throwing the baby out with the bath-water

Emmanuel and Obama do have a plan - they are not neo-cons - get a grip - all the commotion may have us a little dazed, but there is momentum, and we can out - wit the obstructionists, if we keep our wits - the Blue Dogs are essentially beholden to their corporate masters because of the precarious nature of being a democrat in their various districts/states - expose them, prod them, write, call and post their corporate $$$$$$$$ on their wiki pages - don't let up - we can reframe this debate by reminding people that we ALL HAVE A STAKE IN HEALTH REFORM, SINGLE PAYER OPTIMALLY, PUBLIC OPTION AS THE COMPROMISE - ANYONE CAN BE RESCINDED, PURGED, UNEMPLOYED - don't waste your time trashing this administration 8 months into the first term - do something positive - please - prosecuting the prior administration miscreants for war crimes and torture will always be secondary to getting Americans back to work, secure in their homes, providing access to medical care - and it will be easier in an environment of economic stability - patience - we have time to do it all -

They're just doing their jobs

Be nice to the neo-cons in Congress.  They're just doing the job they're paid to do.  They are looking out for the interests of their wealthy corporate masters.  That will not change as long as we allow the wealthy and corporations to buy members of Congress by paying $millions in bribes every year.
