GOP Attack Machine Knows Misinformed Intensity of Emotion Wins Against Reason and Fact: FOX News Best Year Ever

Haven't we seen this before? The majority of Americans support progressive policies, such as the public option in healthcare reform legislation when stated factually, but oppose them when the false perceptions fostered by right wing media and GOP politicians take root in their heads.
For all the comaradarie and mutual indignation of the net roots -- including BuzzFlash -- at the failure of the Obama White House to aggressively push the public option (not to mention single payer), they are up against the same corporately and wealthy individual finance propaganda media dissemination machine that Clinton ran into. In this sense, little has changed in 30 years, since the right wing misinformation infrastructure started to fully take root in the Reagan years (although FOX "News" came later).
Indeed, much to the dismay of progressives, FOX "News" viewership is up 11% over last year according to Nielsen Media Research, as cited in an AP article ominously entitled "FOX News on Pace for best year ever."
Yes, MSNBC is picking up and has surpassed CNN as second in cable news -- and David Shuster, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, and the superstar of the progressive perspective in journalism -- Rachel Maddow -- are a distant third to FOX, but maintaining a viable audience, as long as MSNBC's parent company -- GE -- don't see its larger corporate interests directly threatened.
But FOX and its cohort right wing hate shills ignite and incite its audience with misinformation; Rachel Maddow and the MSNBC night shift inform and string together the facts. It's the classic difference and dilemma for secular progressives: reason vs. deceptively kindled emotion.
The hysteria that FOX, with its increasing viewership, has set off with its lies has led to a British correspondent calling the GOP a cult.
As George Lakoff, the specialist in framing issues, recently noted, the WH has done a poor job of communicating and marketing healthcare reform. Obama has not embraced language that appeals to Americans with health insurance, he has shifted his sales strategy several times, and he hasn't successfully conveyed a sense of urgency. In addition, Obama has made the mistake of thinking that logic prevails against misinformed intensity of feeling.
I campaigned for many years for gun control. And if anyone has shown what a small minority of highly energized, angry, and emotionally threatened voters can accomplish -- egged on by the propaganda of the NRA -- it is a relatively small group of gun owners. Legislators, besides being beholden to big money for the most part, also want to flee out the back door when confronted with angry constitutents. Many, if not most, will vote with the group that has the highest intensity of feeling over the restrained reasonable advocates.
The GOP figured this out a long time ago. And that is why in quick succession we have seen the teabaggers, birthers and Town Hall lobbying-groups organized terrorists. And that is why FOX, a gift of Murdoch to the GOP and to protect his corporate interests, has been lighting the bonfire.
Furthermore, the more people who get upset from lies that threaten them, the more who join the movement. It's like a lynch mob walking through town and gathering a larger crowd as people hear that "a black 'boy' raped a virgin white girl and we're going to hang him" and join the vigilante group (most likely based on a rumor, just as FOX is.)
Rachel Maddow is our Godsend, because she has the ability to be Rhodes Scholar smart and not threaten viewers who might disagree with her. She has a reassuring presence even as she dismantles the GOP attack machine.
But Maddow is successful -- to a certain degree -- for just the opposite reason of FOX. She is reasoned and at one with herself; FOX is irrational and a firebomb thrower that is incendiary.
Remember that: because recent polls show that FOX viewers are the most misinformed in relation to facts. The same was true during the height of the Iraq War. And it will always be true, because FOX is a propaganda station, an arm of a demagogic machine to incite and divert the economically pressed working and middle classes against scapegoats, while preserving the economic rule of the corporate and the wealthy.
BuzzFlash gave its Wings of Justice Award to ColorOfChange.Org for organizing the current effort to get advertisers to boycott the Glenn Beck show. They have done a fantastic job.
But as successful as the effort has been, mark our words, Glenn Beck will be back (he is currently on a one-week "cooling off" vacation). In three decades, the right wing media has only grown stronger, abetted by a corporately owned mainstream media.
FOX "News" is growing, and so is the potential for armed rebellion and assassination in the United States. Already, followers of the right wing hate hosts have committeed individual shootings around the nation, because the right wing validates victimhood and justifies outrage.
None of this will stop, despite the fine work of sites like mediamatters.org, until pro-democracy Americans start owning big chunks of the media.
But after three decades, that doesn't appear like it will happen anytime soon.

SIMPLE SOLUTION
Wealthy Progressives need to put their money where their political mouths are.
Progressives write books. Mainstream America does not read books.
Like it or not, mainstream America gets its "news" from TV and radio.
Conservatives and Neocons figured this out decades ago, and have been willing to put huge sums of money into purchasing TV and radio networks. They use these vehicles to advance an agenda that favors the corporate interests of the top 1%. They use lies, distortions and manipluation to get the bottom 99% of Americans to vote against their own self-interests.
Even if Progressives had equal access to TV and radio, it would be a challenge to get the truth out and fight the lies. Without this access, however, it is impossible and any attempt to advance progressive issues is and will continue to be a complete exercise in futility.
Where are all the wealthy progressives? Why have they not bought TV and radio networks? Why do they still not get it?
Hey, Alec Baldwin, et al, take a break from your so-so contributions to HuffPo and buy something that would really make a difference.
.
This is how it works in Rural America
I live in rural Kentucky and know how this stuff works. It's a web of bible thumpers, non profits and Churches.
Most progressives have no idea why or how folks in rural areas get organized so fast and or why they are so mad and that's why the progressives, mostly in large metropolitian areas, will continue to be surprised with the right wing's ability to get their folks out.
I suggest until the progressive movement has a real understanding of what's going on in Rural America and take action to deal with it, it will only get worse. It's not enough to sterotype Right Wing Rural Americans as, racist or dumb asses, it's our respnsibility as progressives to find out why they are the way they are and change the enviroment. Of course that takes work and effort from Rural Progerssives like me, but when we do the work it gets ignored by the metropolitain progressives, because they, I feel, look down their noses at Rural Progressive Americans and in doing so allow the Right Wing agenda to flourish in Rural America.
This is one example of what's going on in Rural America, but it will be ingnored by the big city Progressives, because they don't have a clue.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and please excuse my venting, but what's going on is obvious to us and no one seems to listening.

Wake Up NOW
The right-wing media & the GOP long ago mastered the use of misinformation as a political tool. Wake up folks, while you're wasting time arguing about a public option for a health-care reform plan, the right wing is very effectively destroying all chances for even the most modest health care reform (again).
They have basically trotted out the same tactics they used to destroy the Clinton health-care effort, and it's working even better now than it did in 1993. The way this debate is going is really hammering progressives & democrats politically. Not only do I think it's unlikely ANY form of health-care reform will be passed this year, but I think the GOP will very possibly be able to use their effort to derail this as a springboard to take back control of congress next year.Worse, the way things are going, the GOP may have been right-this could be Obama's "Waterloo".
It's a nightmare watching this happen all over again. But,unless democrats unite RIGHT NOW (and I'm talking marching in lock-step here) in support of whatever modest reform plan that may still have any hope at all of passing, the progress we've made in the last two elections is going straight down the tubes.I can't overstate the need for pragmatism here. Anything else is political suicide. Please keep this in mind. I'd rather have 25% of something than 100% of nothing again- with a Jeb Bush presidency on top of that to boot!! I doubt any of you want that either, so stop sniping at each other & get to work!!
Equal Time and Media Ownership Rules?
Instead of an outcry against FOX, perhaps it's time to call for the first steps in breaking corporate power over our lives. We need to break the power of the 10 people at the head of various media conglomerates that control nearly all of the mainstream media by: (1) restoring the Equal Time rule for all public broadcasts and (2) reducing to one the number of media outlets that could be owned in any media market (i.e. an ownership of a nationally distributed paper would exclude you from owning any other media outlet--be it another paper, a TV station, or a cable channel). Rupert Murdock (who has reaped so much benefit from getting changes in the ownership rules in his favor) and GE would both see their power over our government substantially reduced. Their lost power would strengthen the voices of individuals before their government and remove a primary vehicle for organizing Astroturf-rooted public rebellion.
This information is not the unique property of the Pukes
Everybody knows. Twain noted (paraphrasing) that the lie spreads round the world befor the truth is even out of bed.
The stratagem functions flawlessly for the Pukes because the Media, upon which the lies depend, are all owned and operated by either the Owners themselves, or reliable satraps and shit-lickers in supervisory positions.
Today, and for the last 30 years, at least, America is a "corporate state." This means that, no matter the ostensible leader, or the nominal majorities enjoyed by the putative "people's party," or the "party" of the "elected" leader/president, the interests which the press serves are those of the hegemonic corporate State.
That is, as one smart fellow has said, "In the Corporate State, corporate media are the State Media."
