Let's Get to the Heart of the Matter: Racism

BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG

By Mark Karlin

Ever since the Nixon Southern Strategy, race has been the seedy, reprehensible political card played by the GOP whenever they need to win in a tight spot.

So it is now, as they try to cripple the Obama presidency by crushing the common good of healthcare for all Americans so corporations can feast and grow fat with profit at the expense of our well being.

Race again is being used as the scapegoat to arouse the hordes that laid dormant through 8 years of Bush tyranny: they would be against anything Obama would do because he is black and represents a symbolic psychological flashpoint of anger to middle and lower class white Christian (males in particular) who thought that they owned America, and that democracy was just for whites.

But what the GOP and its media shills are igniting now may lead to violence in the streets (there have already been several mass shootings committed by wing nuts) or even, God forbid, an assassination.  The purpose of the GOP is to castrate Obama's power, a gruesome but apt metaphor for what slave owners did to male blacks who were not obedient.

So the pawns -- the virulent racists are empowered by FOX and Limbaugh and the GOP leadership -- and they are on the loose, this time in Wal-Mart get ups instead of White Sheets.

And what do they produce? Well, for one, a swastika spraypainted on the district office sign of Rep. David Scott of Smyrna Georgia.

But it is even uglier, because Rep. Scott received this vile racist letter in the mail and also an incomprehensibly offensive flyer a day apart.

The Republicans have opened the gates of Hell upon America.

May the Lord have mercy on their damned souls.

My appreciation to Mark Thompson, radio host of "Make it Plain" on Sirrius, who discussed the letter and flyer on his program on August 11.

Good points, Mr. Karlin, except that your neglect to mention...

"Let's Get to the Heart of the Matter: Racism in Defense of the Corporate State"
-- BuzzFlash Editor's Blog

Good points, Mr. Karlin, except that you neglect to mention...
that Goldman-Sachs is THE 800-lb gorrilla of big finance and (thus) _Corporate State_ America, and that the Neo-Con NY Times & Washington Post (owned by the Sulzberger & Meyers families, respectively) have most certainly BEEN PUSHING that RACIST PARANOIA & HYSTERIA AGENDA for TWO FULL DECADES now.

(Including both the Post & Times hyperventilating, and deceitful, efforts to paint the routine "Whitewater" real-estate flop as a HUGE part of the S&L scandals, (hapless Clinton former friend Jim McDougal DIED IN MAX SECURITY PRISON, DENIED HIS HEART MEDS by Ken Starr's FBI prosecutors, in no small part because of the Post & Times atrocious reporting.)
The Post & Times jumped all over the "VP Al Gore is a SERIAL EXAGGERATOR" theme in summer of 2000, while giving Bush & Cheney's career scandals records a free pass;
both the Post and Times accusing Los Alamos Chinese scientist Wen Ho Lee of SPYING (the Sulzberger Times was FOUND GUILTY of CHARACTER DEFAMATION in the ensuing lawsuit, but in good Goebbels Brown-Shirt fashion, the penalty was so paltry, split among a corporate media consortium, that the Times actually PROFITED from its blaring, hysterical, accusatory, defamatory "LEE is a CHINA SPY!" "reporting.")

And, regardless about how much Righties like to blast the Post & Times' so-called "LIBERAL" leanings, the Post & Times are most certainly RADICAL RIGHT-WING CORPORATE STATE ESTABLISHMENTARIAN, pro-war, pro-police-state, CONCENTRATION-of-wealth & Power AUTHORITARIANS - the EXACT sort of people another Buzzflash headline today decries as
"The Wealthy Elites Play the Racists for Pawns at a Town Hall Meeting in Maryland"!
The Times & Post families are the very "WEALTHY ELITES" Buzzflash decries, BUT the AIPAC, Neo-Con links to RACISM and "major media" RACE-BAITING are usually gloosed over.

Not only have the Sulzberger NY Times & Meyers-owned WashPost WHITEWASHED the ENTIRE RAFT of Bush co. crimes - including ILLEGAL SURVEILLANCE, STOLEN ELECTIONS, CORRUPT WAR CONTRACTS, and the KARL ROVE ORCHESTRATED _PURGING_ of US Prosecutors
(Republican US District Attorneys who would not prosecute FRAUDULENT, PERJUROUS PROSECUTIONS against INNOCENT defendants - One such FRAUDULENT prosecution including former Alamaba Dem. Governor DON SIEGELMAN,
ROBBED of his 2002 re-election by the usual Rethuglican vote-stealing, then INDICTED, PROSECUTED, TRIED, and CONVICTED by Karl Rove's HYPER-PARTISAN prosecutors... including the lead prosecutor, Leura Canary, who was THE WIFE of the CAMPAIGN MANAGER of Governor Seigelman's 2002 Republican opponent!!!!
(And, most outrageous of all, the Emanuel/Obama White House, and Holder 'Justice' Department, PRETEND NOT TO NOTICE the political lynching of Governor Siegelman, to repeat, in a courtroom, and by a prosecutor, closely tied to Mr. Seigelman's career Republican political opponents.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leura_Canary

AIPAC Neo-Cons MICHAEL CHERTOFF, Mike Mukasey, Josh Bolton, Scooter Libby, and dozens of othes were INSTRUMENTAL in the Bush-Cheney assault on the US Constitution, including AG Mukasey WHITEWASHING the Rove Purge-gate scandal; and Presidential Chief of Staff Josh Bolton, and VP Cheney Chief of Staff I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby HELPING BUSH & CHENEY FIND WAYS to AVOID US Laws & constitutional requirements, helping them skirt legal oversight, and generally helping the White House duo SUBVERT the US Constitution.

(In this rant, just mentioning that Likudnik Neo-Con Libby was AT THE CENTER of the VP Cheney's "CIA-OUTING" scandal; that Libby was CONVICTED of OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE & PERJURY for obstructing the investigation of that scandal; and that OBSTRUCTION of the FBI investigation ENABLED Cheney & Bush to STEAL Election 2004 in Ohio & other states, sounds like just more hysterical ranting & piling on!)

Now here's the rub: the above (most certainly AIPAC Likudnik Neo-Cons) all HELPING the REPUBLICAN PARTY PLAY the BUSH-ROVE-CHENEY RACIST PARANOIA, Blackwater "Holy War" mercenaries, torture, surveillance, SECRECY, stolen-elections
(stolen, make no mistake, FROM MINORITY VOTERS), and tax-cuts-for-rich agenda EVERY STEP OF THE WAY,
(Token minority Bush admin. officials Condi Rice, Colin Powell, AG Gonzales, and a few others not-with-standing.)

Yep, you Obamanoids are racist

Your President just gave a remarkably stupid speech in front of a Potemkin Village townhall full of plants. You cannot defend your desire to have full-blown fascism and all you can do to answer the withering criticism of your airheaded proposals is to cry that all your opponents are racist. And since the shiny new black Barbie you bought in November is failing to produce the "oohs" and "ahs" you thought his blackness would get you, you are now manufacturing racially charged letters and signs that have been traced back to you. Poor retarded monkeys. Bruce Majors Guillotine operator Anarcho-capitalist pledged to eliminating the tax predator ruling class and their media whores

Keep talking BruceMajors...

...you prove the point that the fundamental issue here is racism--your racism and that of your fellow nut jobs.

2010/2012

It's a fundemental right to vote as you wish. However, whatever you do, do NOT vote for anything remotely resembling Sarah Palin. Anyone dumb/mentally lazy enough to do it, God help us all.

NO MEDIA CONTENT LAW!!!!

I understand the desire to force falsehood out from what constitutes the media today, but expecting the legal system to take up that issue is grossly misguided.

Think back to when Dubya's administration began issuing new "guidelines" and other manipulations of how already established laws were going to be enforced. Many things people took for granted were lost, maybe forever, through establishing legal precedent as the law was applied in ways not originally intended.

Then there are the corporatist courts. I don't have the link at hand, nor do I remember the pertinent individual's names, but Fox News successfully defended against a wrongful termination suit by presenting one of these "opinions" in how the FCC regulations were to be applied. The court ruling stated that without specific statutory language, the FCC could not legally enforce the prevention of Fox News presenting clear and provable falsehoods as truth (sound familiar????), therefore the ex-employees were legitimately dismissed for refusing a legal order from their employer, who has no legal obligation to exclusively utilize provable facts when they present a story as news.

The best way to alter media is to remember Mark Felt's wise words to Woodward and Bernstein: Follow The Money. Glen Beck has just lost a few sponsors for his show (which you KNOW Rupert isn't liking very well!) due to the uproar his insane comments generated, so it still can be done. Even to Fox.

So stop expecting Someone Else to do what you are already doing here. Communicate your distress over the lies the media presents as news to the people who pay the expensive costs of presenting it!

Why did nobody in the M$M say this years ago?

It has been evident for a number of years now that the reactionary element of the coordinator class has goaded on the more ignorant, illiterate and racist elements of the primarily white working classes for years. And we must give the devil his due for in what can only be described as a stroke of genius, those who are hurt the most by big corporation politics and policies are now Big Corporate American's most willing foot-soldiers.

The marriage of the racist, reactionary right and Big Corporate American became evident to me during the Jimmy Carter's administration when I tended a little redneck bar. Imagine if you will working men, union members, who did not trust Carter, they told me, because he was too honest! And anyhow, the Iranians were afraid of Reagan, he'd get those hostages back! The television and WHO Radio, the 50,000 watt voice of the Middle West told them so. Oh, by they way, WHO Radio was where Ronald Wilson Reagan began his career as a sportscaster.

I witnessed the power of the media during the 1988 presidential election when my white National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) union steward informed me he was voting for Vice President George H.W. Bush because he was for the death penalty. Obviously the Lee Atwater "Willie Horton" commercial had done its work.(for the record, I too am white.)

And now, thanks in no small part to coordinator class liberal Democrats in the White House and Congress we are saddled with the unforeseen, by Democrats that is, results of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Deregulating the public air waves has resulted in media consolidation and monopoly control. If it ain't on a Clear Channel station you can hear it on a Citadel or Cumulus Broadcasting radio station. As an Iowa wag observed, in Iowa there are two types of radio, Republican radio and country radio which is pretty much the same thing. It is not that different elsewhere.

The media helped create the monster we are seeing unleashed at town hall meetings. And as long as there is no charismatic leader round which a rabid fascist movement can coalesce, Big Corporate America keeps the wolf on a short leash. But should a charismatic leader arise on the rabid-dog right Big Corporate America will have the wolf by the ears. Let us hope, Glenn Beck is the best they got.

Talk about sore losers.....

Whiney little babies lost the election, and now they are losing their minds. Pity them. Laugh at them. It's their last stand.

We need a law

I know it may sound over-the-top, but we really should have laws governing the spreading of lies. There are too many people in this country that believe what they are told by the right-wing nutcases even though there isn't a shred of truth. They should be held accountable. Free speech is one thing, lying for the sake of inciting riots is quite another.

Senator Cardin's Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday

I attended Senator Cardin (D-MD) on Tuesday by showing up three hours early in 100 degree heat with 90% humidity. The Republicans had shown up four hours early, but I was still able to make it in. The limit was 500 people. Here is the argument made to me by one of the Republicans during the three hour wait in line: The solution for people without health insurance is to teach them Spanish. He said he had been to emergency rooms several times and each time someone speaking Spanish arrived, he or she was moved to the front of the line, told there was no need to fill out any paper work, and assured that all the care provided would be completely free. I asked why he thought this had happened. In a disgusted voice, as if I just was too stupid to get it, he explained that the Spanish speaking people were "illegals" and therefore entitled to free care at taxpayer expense. He said he opposed health care reform because Obama's real goal was to force this policy to be adopted across the United States so that all American taxpayers would have to support the "illegals." I asked the obvious question, how do you know they were "illegals"? He replied that they were speaking Spanish. If they were here legally, he said, they would be speaking English. He went on to support killing all Muslims "before they kill us" which resulted in numerous nods of agreement from the other Republicans in the line. The opposition to health care reform is racist to the core, and has little to do with economic issues or "death squads" or anything else. By the way, most of the people in the line said it had been absolutely proven that Obama was born in Kenya, was not a US citizen, and therefore was not actually President of the United States. Jonathan Inskeep Crofton, MD

but it is racism...

Without racism - the problems we are experiencing would be harder to create by the mainstream media. Republicans would not get elected (without being the Eisenhower or Elliot Richardson variety) without racism to divide the lower income voters. I'm a white southerner and this is how it looks to me. Racism is the radical right wing's ace in the hole... without it these nut cases would not be motivated to do the crazy things they're doing. Southerners seem to get that more than the folks up north and out west (where I presently reside). If you don't have a black white and hispanic divide imagine the working class voting block.

I agree, lets cut out all

I agree, lets cut out all the crap and BS. When the pistol packin mama from Alaska says BO's health plan is evil she means black men are evil;when RL says he wants BO to fail he means he cannot stand to see a black President in the White House; when the birthers claim BO is not American citizen, they mean all people of color are second class citizens to them and on and on ad nauseum.

I guess, but it _is_ hard to understand

That's why I'm more of the opinion that we should just give the crackers Alabama as a white reservation and be done with it. Hell, the non-metro county where I grew up in NORTH DAKOTA went Obama and you have to understand that it's about 95% white and the majority of the 5% can probably claim a little Native American. The old-school Townie and Southern Redneck really isn't evenly distributed everywhere in America so they can be pretty alien to some of us.

WAKE UP!!!!

Thomas M! Haven't you looked under your bed or in the closet lately? Just because you don't see the danger doesn't mean it isn't there!

I could see it build back when Reagan was demonstrating more emotion than he was intellect (see: Philadelphia MS), and how well that was playing with the voters. Too many people who should have known better voted for him for specious reasons. They would brag to me about it! But they got theirs during Reagan's first recession, losing jobs and maybe their homes. Afterwards, they would deny to my face they ever supported the man.

I won't go into an entire litany of the period, but Poppy Bush made things worse, enough so that after "No New Taxes" fell by the wayside that maybe the people were smartening up. Selecting Clinton demonstrated that wasn't so (see: NAFTA, GATT, WTO, welfare "reform", ...), and when Gore was getting beaten up by the Bush-friendly media, I knew we had reached a dangerous stage. Dubya of SCOTUS took us to the edge of the cliff and then began hacking at it. The rest is all so recent that even health care protesters should be able to remember it all. (The poster below who lists Obama's shortcomings is referred to those whose memories have indeed failed totally.)

I'd like to modify that poster's conclusions, however. It should be clear that it is no longer important whether a politician is Democrat or Republican. It is important whether that person stands with the corporations or with the people. That is the choice for the person I am presented as a candidate. Any politician who stands with the corporations should have to eat his corporate campaign contributions when We the People select someone else to represent us.

Vote non-corporate!

"...it is no longer important whether a politician is Democrat or Republican. It is important whether that person stands with the corporations or with the people."

Too bad more people don't realize this.

Consider that the Green Party doesn't accept ANY corporate money, and both the Republicans and the Democrats receive THE MAJORITY of their funding from corporate sources. Voting Green should be a no-brainer.

Sorry, Mark

The whole "Peter and the Racist Wolf" story is getting a little old. No doubt racism is real, particularly among the conservative crowd, but your ridiculous cries of "Racist! Racism! Racist!" you so frequently hurled at the Clintons during the primaries disqualify you from making any such accusations.

Every time you say it now, it just sounds like, "Wolf! Wolf!"

Only fools and liars can

Only fools and liars can deny that the essential cornerstone of modern "conservatism" is racism. Open your eyes. Only racism can expain why such a large percentage of Americans refuse to have universal single-payer health care when it's advantages are so painfully obvious from the examples of every civilized country in th world. America is the land of abject stupidity.

Did someone deny ...

... that racism is an essential cornerstone of modern conservatism? Try reading it again, slooooowly. I'm just pointing out that Mark (and by extension, BF), with all his false accusations of racism and his use of the race card during the Democratic primary, is the last person who should be sounding the clarion call. Sort of like having Rush Limbaugh lecture people on the dangers of drug abuse or obesity. Right message .... wrong messenger.

BTW - I'm a strong proponent of single-payer healthcare ... I just wish Obama would give it a chance.

I'm curious, though. Based on your theory that the only reason for "refusing to have single payer health care when it's (sic) advantages are so painfully obvious is racism", .....

....... does this mean that Obama is a racist?

You guys should get over

You guys should get over yourselfs. Everything & I mean everything is racist to you. You use it as crutch. Obama's policy poll numbers are diving big time!! I know, I know its all because of racism!!
Do you not remember the many pictures of Bush splattered all over the liberal Media when he was in Office. I didn't like Bush, I'm a Democrat, but you people are parnoid.
Take a look at these pictures.

I guess these are Ok thou with you guys. Gezz!!

Projection

Article excerpt ":they would be against anything Obama would do because he is black and represents a symbolic psychological flashpoint of anger to middle and lower class white Christian (males in particular) who thought that they owned America, and that democracy was just for whites." _____________________________________________________ Those who think that whites own America are in for a bad time. Population Data shows that whites will be the minority in the US by 2024 (that's 15 years from now.) Asians, Hispanics and Blacks will hold the majority in the US. Perhaps this is at the root of their anger.

Things that Go Bump in the Night

You are absolutely right, of course. It's the racist card that has been attached to the anger on the right. With it came fear. I suspect however, that the anger and fear are a collective phenomenon affecting all of us, including the progressives, much like the recent typhoons in the East. It must be said that racism is but one of several memes in play here. For example, I am personally enraged with Obama for many more nuanced reasons, ranging from his oxymononic "rendition without torture" to his presidential-enabled theft of trillions of dollars which, ironically, seems likely to have derailed health care reform. Add to that Afghanistan and a whole litany of Obama's continuing lies and sellouts--he's the master of rhetoric, I'll say that--and I feel my patience is just about at an end. But I try and look further and then I think that it isn't necessarily just a personal thing, it's a collective event meaning that it's not necessarily coming from the ground up, but from the top down, from the inside out. There is in fact a raging current of anger flowing through America at this time, and I've never seen anything like it. It's largely unconscious, of course, no more nor any less than it was in Nazi Germany. In 2012, Obama's administration may well be perceived to be as "weak and failed" as that of the Weimar Republic was in 1932. One can easily see the American people turning-out to elect a "Palin/Huckabee" government in 2012 or 2016 that will make the Bush and Cheney administration look almost centrist by comparison. You yourself may wish to write about it in Buzzflash some time, drawing the appropriate parallels. One thing I do know with certainty is that Palin or not, I, for one, will never vote Democrat again.

You Can Bottle Racism Up As THE MAIN REASON!!

That and misinformed elderly people that think their Medicare coverage will get taken away.
