Pat Buchanan and the Long Goodbye

In retropsect, it was an iconic showdown: a lesbian new media superstar smacks down the open racism and gender bias of one of the most enduring and brazen defenders of white male entitlement.

So it was when Rachel Maddow -- pushed to the limits of her cordiality -- swatted down Buchanan's pugilistic assertions of white male mental superiority for the Supreme Court.

It's the Alamo for white male affirmative action, and Buchanan (and his media counterparts such as Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity) know that if they don't start a rebellion of white guys (who will be even more armed thanks to the NRA soon), the sheer demographics of America are facilitating a long goodbye to white males having absolute power over the destiny of the nation.

This is all the tail end of the great upheaval that started with the Civil Rights movement, proceeded through the Women's Empowerment movement and has now led to the growing acceptance of Gay Rights.

No one shares power easily, and the conservative takeover of the goverment under Reagan and the two Bushes was blowback to the attempt at equal rights forced upon white males by the assertion of Constitutional protections by people who were not in the "members only" club.

The manic expressions of armed rebellion against a tyrannical government emerging from the likes of Glenn Beck and so many other wingers are the last gasps of a resistance to non-white males taking a slice of the pie.

Pat Buchanan, like Ann Coulter, knows that controversy gets publicity (and don't kid yourself: MSNBC is delighted to get all the attention the Maddow-Buchanan dust-up received, although it was clear Maddow was sincerely offended and somewhat taken aback that her periodic "acceptable" insider D.C. spokesman for the "Aryan Nation" had crossed the line). But, you get the feeling that Buchanan believes every word, whereas Coulter is more interested in selling books and creating absurdly controversial soundbites than in ideology.

The psyche of the white male yearning for the patriarchal hierarachy was reassured by Bush as president -- who proved that any idiot white male could rise to the top of the pyramid, even if his strings were being pulled by two other white males: Cheney and Rove. But then the psychic crack-up happened: an African-American male was elected to the highest office in the land by a landslide.

So for the Pat Buchanans of the world who saw Clinton as a Bubba who had betrayed them, Bush gave hope that the ante-bellum order of white male plantation dominance would be restored.

And then it all came crashing down and now is manifesting itself in demagogic outbursts of forcefully overtaking the government and restoring the white man on top.

That's Pat Buchanan and the long goodbye in a nutshell, because the tide of American demographics is wresting power from the white male, forcing a power sharing agreement that they don't want any part of.

As for why Buchanan continues to draw a salary from the MSM media and has an ongoing presence on television, remember that most of the television corporations are run by white guys. And GE owns MSNBC. Don't forget that.

As for seeing anymore of Buchanan on TV, yes there is a First Amendment, but there is also a question of civilized standards.

Would MSNBC have a member of the Nazi Party debating with Rachel Maddow? They do have a choice of guest "pundits."

Buchanan may help their ratings and help GE hedge its bets with white males, but he should be told goodbye -- and it shouldn't be a long one.

Do white males still run the country? Uh, look at Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, the other major financial services players, as well as the heads of the major media corporations and the defense contractors and other powerful corporations in the US. In the US, the major corporations run the country and they are headed by white males (including Jewish white males, as there appears to be little reason to make a distinction in the 21st Century US). Why have these white males allowed this storyline to develop that white males are being deposed and are losing control? It is because mostly they do not identify themselves as "white males" and place no value in white males generally being in control. They more likely think of themselves as brilliant individuals (I would say "predatory," "unprincipled," and "ruthless" were more apt descriptors) who happen to be white male. Moreover, I would think that they are very happy to deflect criticism of our corrupt corporatist political/economic system by blaming white males as a whole instead (the white male laborers and small farmers struggling to survive get just as much of the blame as Wall Street CEOs that way). They know that, given their positions, they have nothing to fear personally from a widespread but low intensity demonization of white males, but long-term they do face a threat to their livelihoods if the common people begin to challenge the assumptions that corporatism is utilitarian and that their elevated status and extraordinary financial compensation are justified. Though Buchanan is a very flawed messenger for the non-elite conservatives, he seems to actually believe most of what he is saying, which is unfortunate as his sincerity merely serves to further befuddle many of the unsophisticated and leads them to continue to vote against their own interests (as in "What's the Matter with Kansas"). I believe he has been able to stick around this long because his message resonates with many non-elite white males who feel they have never enjoyed any significant advantages, and yet they are accused of having such advantages (as they are lumped together with elite white males), and they feel very angry and confused about it. In the meantime, many of the white male CEOs probably have a good laugh about the whole thing.

Because I think it's more important to keep an eye on this dangerout wingnut, I agree with those here who say that he shouldn't be fired. For the sake of my health and the safety of my TV screen from heavy thrown objects, I refuse to watch any of the outlets which would be likely to hire him. Besides, the only way to put him where he really belongs is to use a time machine, something we don't have.

They may not all be white, but, for sure, they are uneducated - or undereducated. Unfortunately there are a WHOLE LOT of people in this country who ONLY hear the FAUX noise and lies, and they think it is the truth. We stayed at a Sleep Inn recently and they had FAUX on in their lobby/dining room 24/7. A lot of sheeple listen. They spread the toxic venom to others, and they vote. I do not think they can be dismissed. Their ignorant, hateful viewpoints are growing more and more passionate as we watch. I have read that people traveling across America can only get legit radio stations if they are in or near a big city, but there is a large expanse of our country where the only thing folks can get on their radio is Rush Limbaugh. I also read that Rush gives it away for free - three free hours of his show to the small country stations all over. No wonder they drink the Kool-ade. It is all they get. Very dangerous. Ed Schultz had a great idea one day on his radio show. He suggested that when you walk into a business and they are playing Fox News Channel on the televsion, that you ask them to politely to change the channel because FOX presents a biased view and you find it offensive, or you will simply have to leave their business. Be polite, but firm. If enough people do this, particularly in this economy where no business wants to turn away customers, it will have an impact. I did this in my doctors waiting room lately. When I came back for a followup a few weeks later, FOX was not on. Be sure to make the request to someone up the food chain.

The devil you already know is always preferable to one you just met... Over the last several years I have been amazed to find myself in agreement with Mr. Buchanan more often than not. Scary, I know... While I was runnin' the roads of America with the Hog Farm and the Grateful Dead he was in the Nixon White House figuring out how to discredit everything I have ever stood for, and still stand for... So it was with very wide eyes that I greeted his opposition to the Iraq War and his defense of civil liberties and attacks on the fear and faulty assumptions that drove the Bushies.

But, after long reflection, I came to the conclusion that Mr. Buchanan was at least an honest man, and further that our recent brush with corrupt dictatorship had made one thing very clear, I would much rather deal with honest men and women I disagree with than dishonest people who will say anything to win or to cover up their crimes.

I've met lots of racists, as a native Oklahoman I have several dozen in the upper branches of my family tree, but I have also seen the honest ones, such as my own grandmother, actually change, actually discover the truth on their own and grow past the old fears they were raised with.

See, before you can change someones mind you have to change the way they feel and this is best done outside the boundaries of political debate, it is fully in the personal realm. Thus a fascist reactionary such as Cheney can see the wisdom of gay marriage, but only through his own daughter's eyes and heart.

If there is such a thing, Mr. Buchanan is at least an honest racist... And thus there is hope for his soul and the opportunity for redemption.

However, every time I see him I'm reminded of his "religious and cultural war" speech from 1992, really scary stuff. Nice article. I seem to agree. But I like to watch Pat and Rachel because I see two people who like each other despite their differences. Maybe I can detach from the offensive, retro things he says because when he talks I feel I'm watching the sunset on a part of our history I'm happy to see fade away (not fast enough thanks to people like Beck, Palin, Limbaugh and Savage!). Pat Robertson reminds me of Senator Robert Byrd, another man I feel a strange sense of affection for despite his inglorious past, membership in the KKK! Regardless, Senator Byrd was a hero of mine when he stood up boldly against the Iraq War. He was the only one in the "white boys club" who dared say the emperor wore no clothes. No thank you to Hillary, Dianne, etc. who I expect more from but got squat. And when Robert Byrd cried about the illness of his friend Ted Kennedy I was surprised to see the genuine grief. Will the best part of globalization be to further tear down the boundaries we place between ourselves? Are the militant gun-toting wackos part of the last hurrah of provinciality? Pre-globalization remnants? They seem to have woken up startled to find the world has changed. Someone moved their cheese. So maybe when I watch forces of intolerance mellowing at the edges I'm seeing a glimmer of what's possible? Pat Buchanan likes Rachel Maddow, and Rachel likes Pat, and I like it.

I'm not convinced that Rachel likes Pat so much. Rachel is an extremely gracious person on television and she extends that grace, respect and hospitality to all her guests. But I also see someone that respects intellect, honesty and knowledge. As host, I see her frequently gracious to those that I doubt she respects or has much use for. She likely finds much about Buchanan very offsenive, but for the sake of civil discourse, extends him courtesy.

Buchanan's outburst is just the beginning, and the whiplash that is to come will be violent in rhetoric at the least. as I listened to Obama's speech to the NAACP 100th Anniversary conference the other night, i heard the grumbling of "red" america. they were saying, "See! Really....how many times is anyone REALLY hired or admitted based on "the best qualifications for the job"? Everyone has been in a situation where they got the job over someone more qualified, and it probably had more to do with the interviewer liking how you looked, rather than what you knew. Rachel Maddow's excellent management of P.B.'s rantings notwithstanding, I wish she'd have called him on the fact that while affirmative action may indeed have played a momentary role in one or more instances in Ms. Sotomayor's life (and SO FRICKIN' WHAT?), that does not have anything to do with her qualifications. It was her intelligence and hard work over the vast majority of her career that got her where she is today: the most qualified SCOTUS nominee in 100 years.

The more exposure that the thoughts and fears of racists and patriarchal holdouts like Buchanan are seen and heard, the more dissonant and outdated they sound, especially when confronted with the calm logic of a Rachel Maddow, herself a gender "minority". As more people see the resistance to change of the conservative white-male mindset for what it really is - fear and self-doubt projected onto others - maybe it won't be such a long good-bye after all. We face too many problems that affect ALL OF US on the planet to give much attention to those who can't deal with change. Yes, Pat, blah blah yadda yadda. Buh-bye!

Buchanan's argument seemed to be that Sotomayor's career demonstrated the benefits of affirmative action and therefore she must be rejected. (Yes, he tried to make the slightly different argument that if she needed AA to succeed as a teen therefore she is obviously unqualified now.) I can see why a "true disbeliever" in AA would make this argument, but it's still hogwash!

Doesn't do Psych meds. Tom Cruise nuttiness aside, Psychiatrists have no idea what they are doing the majority of the time. Most drugs used to treat mental illness were just happened upon. The drugs are usually for epilipsy or seizures are something completely unrealated, and they just happen to have some affect on brain chemicals.

As a white male in the last 1/3 of his life, I found Mr. Buchanan's comments an embarrassment to what America SHOULD represent and an insult to ALL rational thinkers. Obviously, Mr. Buchanan hasn't learned that the best command of the English language is often demonstrated by saying NOTHING! Mr. Buchanan is a member of a dying belief-system. Let his beliefs fade into oblivion and be relegated to a footnote in history. For MSNBC to retain my viewership, Mr. Buchanan must be told goodbye!

the entire segment with Pat because I could only handle so much before I became so furious that my BP went through the top of my head. I was amazed with how composed and civilized Rachel remained throughout though. As Pat continued his rant, she sat listening attentively, let him finish and then very calmly, logically and matter-of-factly proceeded to eviscerate him point by point. The dynamics of Rachel and Pat is very interesting to watch. I do get the impression that he does truly respect her -- which does surprise me, all things considered. Rachel has a very cool and calm composure on air. I think that is one of the reasons why she is able to get some very interesting -- and controversial -- "conservatives" to appear on her show. If nothing else, she remains respectful of each of her guests, is extremely articulate and thinks on her feet very well. She's excellent. I also like the rapport she and KO have with each other. He also has a genuine respect for her -- and he doesn't seem to impress very easily.

MSNBC should fire Buchanan immediately!! He is an outspoken racist, and MSNBC is allowing him air time to spew his venom. I really do not think Buchanan respects anyone, other than wingers like himself. If MSNBC allows him to continue to vent his rage, it will impact the ratings because people will not turn in any program he is on. He has already turned me off.

The right wing media programs choose their lefties to cut off and insult for "balance." They don't invite those back who know how to stand their ground and acquit themselves handlily. Why shouldn't Rachel, Keith, Ed, etal have their loony righties? I'm certainly no masochist to torture myself listening to Fox or Rush. Let Pat blather away with a respectful but persistent, fair interviewer. It is quite satisfying. The beauty of freedom of speech, when it is truly free, is that the fools, racists and misogynists reveal their true colors and lose influence.
