The Picture of the Obama Administration: There's Too Much Color in It for the Republicans

A picture is worth a thousand words, and it's increasingly clear that the GOP doesn't like the picture of the Obama administration; there's too much color in it.

Whatever the disappointments we have had with Barack Obama, it is clear that he has made a decisive commitment to promoting blacks, Hispanics and women to top positions. And it brings back that excitement and promise of "the audacity of hope" to see the number of African-Americans who Obama has appointed to top jobs.

It is perhaps no coincidence that on the day that GOP Senators were "codifying" their objection to a Latina being appointed to a Supreme Court seat, President Obama was appointing an African-American female -- Regina Benjamin, M.D. -- as the Surgeon General of the United States. The concurrence of these two events should not go unnoticed.

It's safe to say that a large majority of the "Limbaugh-Palin-Hannity" populist Republican teabaggers are open or covert racists. The world is changing around them; whites are destined to become the minority in America, as they already have in our largest state, California. This is a scary and -- shall we say -- unsettling thought to a lot of people who have assumed entitlement just for being born white and Christian.

That is one of the reasons Christian fundamentalism plays such a big role in the grassroots of the Republican Party. The leaders of this faction make no bones about believing America is a manifestation of God's will that white Christians should govern.

So, it is a kick in the gut to the populist "white is right" base of the GOP to see President Obama appoint so many people of color to high positions.

Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed as a Justice of the Supreme Court, as she should be -- on her merits. But it will only be after the Republican senators perform for their racially explosive base who think that the end of America is at hand because white people no longer completely control its destiny.

Just remember that thought when you watch or read about the Sotomayor hearings. There are a lot of Republicans who are patriotic as long as the white guys are in charge, but once real demographic democracy takes over they believe the apocalypse is at hand.

Americans (meaning white Anglo Christians) think they should have a monopoly on government positions. We of all people should know (and if some of you don't know your history), that we took these lands from the Native Americans. Pushing them further and further west as we saw fit. These people are the Americans...we were the invaders back when our country was founded. Many European countries came in in the early settlement of this country, all foreigners and all having different life styles. Times change and so does the complexion/and proportion of populations. We are all Americans, and if someone has the ability to do the job well, whether it is in the public realm or in the private sector, it should be based on their ability to get the job done right. People have no choice as to their skin color when they come into this world. Please this racism is growing so old. Republicans in particular seem to be upset about these changes. We have run this country for so long and kept minorities at bay, and now it is time that we acknowledge people for what they can accomplish and improve our country on their ability and not by the color of their skin. Everyone seems to forget that Mr. Obama's mother was a Caucasian, not that it should matter,but in today's society we accept mix-racial marriages. Let's move our country forward and get our economy back on track, that's the most important thing Americans should be worried about, not the color of one's skin.

Editor Karlin's words above succinctly summarize the reasons behind the unsettling republican efforts to do whatever it takes to bring failure to the Obama administration. It is all about racism. Obama is a black man, and that is causing apoplexy in the republican backrooms of many a political district. Racists have, for too long a time now, been able to hold down people of color, be they black, native american, asian, hispanic, etc. The balance of power is subtly shifting from being white-dominated to being color-blind - as more and more people of color are being included in government and civil service roles - and this scares the hell out of those who are no longer as powerful as they once were. There is another reason that some conservative (and maybe not so conservative) whites are getting uncomfortable. They are going to be in the minority someday. As was said in the editorial, this is already true in California. Do you not think that some are getting fearful that they, as a visible minority will be unfairly mistreated? The whiney white men who are at the "top" of the GOP ladder think they are entitled and everyone else is just here for them to "rule" and lord it over and for their amusement/abuse. It's blacks, it's gays, it's women, it's anyone who isn't whiney and white. They are one of the most pathetic groups of people I have ever seen in my life. I'm talking people like Lindsey, Mitch, Kyl, Cornyn, Coborn, Inhofe, Sanford, Ensign, Boehner,Cantor, Rush, Glen and most of the Faux fools et al. This reminds me of a science segment I saw yesterday morning (on the early ABC Morning News). Two women were able to conceive a baby via the use of stem cells. The scientist who was talking about it (yes, a white man, but a man of science not religious claptrap) said that it is possible at some point in the future "men" will be extinct. There are some female species of animals that are already capable of impregnating themselves -- hammerhead sharks and komodo dragons among them. And then we have the clownfish who can change their sex as hierarchy dictates.
