Is President Obama Hurting the Nation by Being Too "Forgiving" of the Bush Administration?

BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION

By all accounts -- including his own -- President Obama doesn't want to "dwell" on the transgressions -- illegal and otherwise -- of the Bush/Cheney administration.

Yes, Newsweek set up some expectations that Eric Holder may pursue a very narrow investigation of "possible" torture legal violations, but as BuzzFlash's P.M. Carpenter points out, it looks like any potential probe would be extremely limited and on a short leash.

Having covered the Bush Administration since its inception, BuzzFlash knows -- as do readers and members of the BuzzFlash community -- that the potential illegalities of that band of neo-con confederates could tie up half the lawyers in D.C. for a couple of years.

We've head nary a peep from President Obama about all this, except that he would leave any prosecution up to Holder and that he himself condemns torture.

So let the BuzzFlash community know what you think, "Is President Obama Hurting the Nation by Being Too 'Forgiving' of the Bush Administration?"

BUZZFLASH DISCUSSION

Obama too soft?

I do think Obama is being too timid about Bush and his crooks but remember the Jewish lobby in America.Let`s hope the US Justice Dept.can take things forward and bring the laws of the country to bear.History will, hopefully, reveal all but that will be 30 years time, action is needed now.

Republicans are nothing but obstructionists

Yes, President Obama should stop trying to deal with the devil. The opposition is not going to compromise anyway. They're pig headed, poor losers who would rather destroy the game instead of continue to play. They've had to sell their Get Out Of Jail card and their last apartments on Mediterranean Way. So they're gonna quit and trash the board. It's often described as "four-year old behavior." Anyone who has ever talked to a Republican knows that they are basically ignorant people. Or rich thugs. Or both. They can't think straight, they hate facts, they stonewall ridiculous positions, and they're corrupt as the day is long. They all have a mental problem accepting new information. The American people want Barack Obama to lead them. Not Russ Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, John Boehner, Glenn Dobbs, Newt Gingrich, or Major Strasser,SS. We don't want any other member of the Republican Loser Party leading us because they have proven themselves to be pathetic, ignorant, unrepentant crooks. We didn't like the last clown they had in office and we don't like them. Did I say clown? I meant lying thug. It's gotten to the point where a Republican can't open his mouth without saying something totally ludicrous, psychotic, or dangerous. But that's not really new, is it? Decent Republicans, if there are any left, will respect the free election of the President and let him and his supporters, the majority of Americans, do things their way for awhile. If they won't show respect for the democratic process, then President Obama should tell them to go to hell.

Hate to Say It

As a man of color, President Obama has shown courage by running for the highest office in this racist country. Unfortunately though, he has already established the fact that he is no JFK profile in courage. Obama has already buckled to the military and the military industrial complex regarding the empire's foreign adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq and has proven to have no stomach for prosecuting the war crimes that were committed during the previous watch. Compare his attitude to JFK's overall distrust of the military and his promise to break the CIA into a thousand pieces after the Bay of Pigs. Kennedy scared the shit out of the far right in this country and therefore those elements felt it necessary for him to pay for his brand of leadership with his life. The reactionaries have little to fear from Obama. He may wind up tweaking around the edges but the hopes and dreams of the progressive community will not be fulfilled by this man.

Forgive?

It is my opinion, for what that is worth, that Obama does not have the right to be "forgiving". Unless he presumes to have the right to be judge and jury--and he has found them guilty then he can proclaim the right to sentence them, and instead 'forgives'--if so, then let him make that claim and see how it fits. The only reasonable law abiding path is to investigate, indict and prosecute in a court of law and if found guilty they can appeal to the court and its capacity to be empathetic. With reasonable luck the judge will be a Republican and devoid of any trace of empathy. Ironic.

He's not being forgiving - he's being cowardly and stupid

If Obama and Holder do not investigate, present evidence to the whole country, and prosecute any crimes committed by or under Bush to the fullest extent of the law if called for, then they are: (a) making a mockery of the idea that no one in the United States is above the law; and (b) regarding torture, are simply rewriting the Nuremberg Principles to make them invalid when we are doing the torturing. Both of those things would be a complete disgrace, but typical of the spineless, gutless, cojones-less group of pathetic invertebrates known as the modern Democratic Party. I am starting to think that the whole bunch of them aren't worth a bucket of warm spit.

Make the Bush Administration Face Justice!

We let Nixon's Watergate big fish get away and we got Raygun's Iran-Contra, we let those big fish get away and we got Iraq, Abu Ghraib, GITMO, Valery Plain, DOJ corruption, and more (there is no shortage of Bush-Cheney prosecutable transgressions). ENOUGH!! NO MORE GET AWAYS only to commit again another day!! This time we hold these criminals accountable. Now that we have an Attorney General who works for the American People and the Constitution, instead of the AG Bush-Cheney toadies we've had for the last 8 years, now we can bring the treasonous criminals to justice! And finally purge our government of the radical right repetition of treachery.

Obama has almost no choice.

If any investigation of BushCo started getting anywhere, there'd be another 9-11. Dick Cheney will incinerate the rest of NYC to prevent Lynne having to visit him in Federal prison. Obama has been told this, no doubt. If anything moves forward, it will disappear as it reaches any significance.

IS OBAMA BEING TOO SOFT ON BUSH?CHENEY

Just what has Holder had to do the last 6 months? He still hasn't gotten around to getting rid of the goons on his staff from the criminal administration. War crime prosecutions should have begun the week after Holder took office and after firing all the incompetent goons Bush had in that department. Obama has been a real disappointment so far. He hasn't pushed heath care reform very hard, could repeal "don't ask, don't tell" with an executive order but is waiting for Congress to do it for him, and keeps giving us this "let's look forward, not backward" excuse for not having Bush and Cheney facing war crimes trials right now. Folks, 2004 proved you can't rely upon the intelligence of the American voting public. If we don't punish these guys for their war crimes, there's always the possibility that another Republican could come to power through trickery, especially since Karl Rove is still alive, and the precedent will have stood that these guys did nothing wrong. Just imagine an America under a Sarah Palin with those powers. It would make Nazi Germany look like the Garden of Eden. larkinfan2

Is Obama hurting the country ...

Both in the short and long term Obama is hurting the country because by not holding the Bush administration accountable he is continuing a culture of political Machiavellian amorality. This encourages the Madoffs and Cheneys and Enrons of this country to continue to try to get and do whatever they want. What does this behavior say to the kid we want to get off the street, who we tell to work hard and play by the rules. Our feet do the talking. Obama's feet are talking loud and clear with his inaction.

Law breaker

CMK Dick should be heald accountable for his actions as should Bush for letting it happen. Now we know who was really running the whitehouse for the last 8 years , lets make them pay for there deeds.

Blackmail the Republicans

Blackmail the Republicans with pictures, documents, and investigations - if they wont co-operate with legislation then we can do this the hard way. Maybe thats what the Holder thing is about. Then, once the Republicans have co-operated, release the pictures anyway.

Too Soft

President Obama needs to up hold the law, no matter who gets caught in the net. President Obama seems to shy away from doing the right thing.

Obama Expects US to Lead the Way...

....as well he should! HE's not sticking his neck out for anyone. If we truly WANT something, then he'll act, otherwise; why should he? Well, it's time to tell him that YES, we DO want Eric Holder to uphold the constitution and prosecute people in the former administration who over-played their hands and ignored the Constitution! We can't afford to ignore that one unless it's okay to live in a dictatorship? I don't think if it were put that way to most Americans that they'd want to let it pass or to only look ahead to the future! They'd want Holder to ACT!! Yup, Obama, if we haven't told you lately, we're telling you NOW!

Laws do not apply

There are quite a few comments in this post in which the writers seem to feel that the Obama administration isn't doing what it should re: bringing the rule of law to bear on Bush and members of his administration for crimes they committed while in power. Clearly these commentors don't know where they are living. They apparently suppose that this is in fact a country where the rule of law is supreme. Unfortunately they are deluded. Some call for hearings on 9/11; some demand that the Bush administration be held accountable for abrogating the Geneva Conventions; some demand Bush administration officials be charged with treason for outting an active CIA agent. Don't misunderstand me, these fine Americans are exactly right on in their demands and if this were really the America they suppose themselves to be living in they would have their way. But this is not the America they actually live in. No, this is the America where the laws do not apply to the ruling class. In fact the America where the rule of law is supreme may never have existed at all. Indeed it may turn out that Nixon was correct when he asserted that when the president does it, it isn't illegal, at least in the sense that there is any consequence to presidential illegalities. Alan8 suggests that we may be on the verge of a Fascist Dictatorship. It may be worth stating that Fascism need not necessarily be linked with dictatorship. Fascist rule is easily accomplished when the political class always places the concerns of corporate commerce above all else. You would have Fascist DeFactoship. Now, Alan8 says "The Greens and the Socialists don't accept corporate money, and are more deserving of our votes." Again this may be true but neither the Socialists or the Greens are a viable political party. So while their ideaology might be closer to what we need neither the Greens nor the Socialists have the necessary gressroot support to advance their agenda. In fact there is no viable third party of any stripe on the American political landscape. The Socialists at least tried to do it right at the turn of the last century; they were able to elect (at least locally) a handful of legislators and even an executive (city Mayors are considered 'executive'offices)over the years. The Greens on the other hand have consistently tried to enter at the top, at least nationally. There may be a scattered handful of Greens in office somewhere in the US but they have zero accomplishments. Simply getting elected is not an accomplishment. You can save all the caterwauling for yet another commission, hearing, investigation what have you. At one time we had a president who was willing to take on the consolidated interests of the military industrial complex. His actions were first undermined by a rogue CIA. Then, on one sunny morning a gunman lodged between cardboard boxes wiped the grease from a cold chicken lunch, aimed his inadequate weapon with an equally inadequately mounted sight and killed him. Or so the story goes. At that instant the coup in America was begun and in December of 2000, in Florida, that coup was complete.

Too Forgiving

I don't think it is a question of being too forgiving. Obama is no different than any other president or politician for that matter. They do not want to give away their own prerogatives and freedom to screw the voters and taxpayers. No matter how vociferously they disagree politically--although most of that is political theater--they always manage to cover each others asses, knowing that some day they will be caught in the same abuses of power. We all know, as do the politicians, that power corrupts even the most "pure", so just like a good hedge fund manager, the politicians always hedge the future by protecting their corrupt colleagues so they in turn will someday be protected by future colleagues. Hey folks, it is an insiders game. There is no real democracy in America. Surely you know that by now. Did anyone truly believe Obama would be any different after he appointed Rahm Emanuel, Tim Geithner, Larry Summers, Bob Gates, half of the Goldman Sachs alumni directory, blah blah blah blah. And on it goes. Just as the "Health Care" system will not be fixed by keeping the old model alive, our political system will never change simply by voting for one of the two corporate sponsored candidates. The system requires a complete overhaul so it becomes a real possibility that a Dennis Kucinich or a Ralph Nader could be elected and not immediately executed by the CIA. What we have now is a Faustian Bargain democracy, where we strategically vote for the lesser of two evils, only to find out eventually that there really are no "degrees" of evil. Greed is unquestionably the most profane and profound source of terrorism the human mind has ever conceived. It never gives itself up to justice willingly. Obama is no savior. He is merely the newest iteration of the the insiders game we call American democracy. My guess is that, like so many empires before us, we are on the final death spiral and those at the top know it. They will continue to become more corrupt and greedy, believing that their wealth and power will carry them through the implosion when it happens. If I were to live long enough, I would suspect that China will become the newest world hegemon. History, according to Kevin Phillips in "Wealth and Democracy", shows that once the financiers get control of an economic/political system, they bleed it dry then move on to the next host. The Dutch were succeeded by the Spanish, who were succeeded by the British, who were succeeded by America. Where is it written that America will be the last great empire?

Obama Expects Us to Lead the Way

If we keep up the pressure and demand full disclosure, accompanied by occasional leaks of testimony, pictures, and maybe even one or two of the hundreds of videos, then Obama will be able to begin prosecutions without political fear.

Heck YES!

Obama is doing a lot of harm by allowing the crimes of Bush & Co. from not being prosecuted. We all like to get along with one another and be "forgiving", but there comes a point when you have to hold people accountable for their acts. It sets a dangerous policy for future presidents and cabinet members. I say, send a message that NOBODY is above the law and that crimimals will be held accountable. I am angered at Obama and his lack of responsibility for following the code of law and prosecuting Bush & Co.

We Must Look Back

We must have full disclosure. All must admit their roles. What did they do? What did they know? And when did they know it?

Yes Obama should investigate and try all involved with war crime

If Obama doesn't follow the rules of the Geneva Convention and investigate and punish all American citizens involved in war crimes then he is quilty of war crimes.

re-election

No he is working on his re-election campaign.

Don't vote for enemies of democracy!

"If America is to have one set of laws for the people and another for those in positions of power our democracy is dead and we will soon be under the thumb of our dictatorial masters."

"Unless President Obama changes his policy of “looking ahead - not back” (Orwellian newspeak for whitewash) we will eventually elect another Bush-like despot and become a nation of cowering sheep meekly following the dictates of the leader whose actions will be declared as “necessary for our protection” from whatever “enemies of America” the leader contrives for us."

Great quotes. It looks like some people are waking up to the fact that the two corporate-financed parties don't represent us and are moving us toward a fascist dictatorship. It starts with not enforcing the laws on those that are considered above the law.

Voting Democratic is not progressive! It gives undeserved credibility to one of the two parties that are selling out our democracy. The Greens and the Socialists don't accept corporate money, and are more deserving of our votes. If you vote Democratic, you are part of the problem.

The Rule of Law Should not be a 'Political Decision'

You know, one can certainly 'forgive' without turning a blind political eye to justice or the likelihood of rampant violations of the law. And actively interfering with or otherwise delaying legal attention to actions which are increasingly likely to have been illegal does not demonstrate such 'forgiveness' but indifference to the rule of law. While I actually quite support Obama's apparent hands off practice and his decision not to further stoke or advocate for prosecution himself, I am also troubled that he seems to have become an active hindrance to such actions. The Bush/Cheney/Rummy show, just like any other citizen, must be held accountable should clear violations of the law become evident as would any other citizen or organization. I also have no interest in the forever analysis of ethical transgressions or those which represent differential philosophies...no matter how egregious said actions may now present. At the same time, and inasmuch as new evidence continues to come to light which seems to strongly point to legal, and even criminal, violations rather than simply questions of ethics or philosophy, interfering in such a formal review risks the charge of collusion with or being an impediment to a legitimate and reasonable legal prosecution. Justice should absolutely pursue these matters without imposed limitations or being guided by 'political' gamesmanship. It appears that this country was led for 8 years by a rogue Administration in the White House who truly did not consider the American constitution relevant to its actions or judgments. Allowing such behavior to simply go unquestioned risks the debasement of every thing and everyone who follows. The rule of law must always prevail and those choosing to flaunt the law must be challenged every single time even when that might not be convenient. This is...should not be...a 'political decision' but one which is guided by the laws of this country. Bush and friends absolutely must be held accountable for those actions which may have been flagrantly illegal. To do anything else degrades the country, denies reality, and creates the conditions whereby such behaviors are encouraged.

YEAH!! Just like with AIG

It sounds like there are secret deals Bush made, and everyone in that White House is going overboard to make sure this corruption stays secretive. AIG, Obama and some people of congress were going all out after the AIG people. This may be another one of the multiple "circumstantial coincidentals," there is only about 100,000.000 of these circumstances, but not one day after I made the complaint our landlord opened our mail, called the people and said she was us, and one of these places for sure was AIG auto insurance offices, suddenly AIG was not so bad anymore. There is something a bunch in the White House was or is up to. I am seeing more and more where the issues I am personally dealing with are coming from much higher up than Louisiana. And it is much higher up than someone making sure I knew that she dated a judge all through high school and he was going to get her off any crime she did, including one like I mentioned above. Bush and State of Louisiana were working hand in hand, and looks like they still are. As I have found out, when any talks of taking anything official-and by that I mean taking anything to court, just the mention of it, you find out exactly who is really your friend when you are not there. If it is some professional person, and they are doing everything to stay out of the courts, you better ask to check your records and documents they wrote up on you. Same thing here. People in the background, even people in the Democratic Party, were working with Bush. Going easy on Bush, is also protecting the ones who worked with him. And it looks like someone in the democratic party does not want this found out.

Too Forgiving?

Tom I am surrounded by conservatives, and I find it increasingly difficult to point out the benefits of the Obama administration. What I've been hearing recently is the "damage" he intends to inflict on the Constitution, likely via Judge Sotomayor. When I ask about the actual damage done by the previous administration, they consensus is that we were kept "safe". Safe from whom? Obama's "fellow Muslim", of course- the still at large Osama bin Laden. The 9/11 hits are invariably blamed on Clinton. The problems with the Obama administration are becoming many. Lack of fortitude on the crimes of the previous administration; lack of leadership in Congress - it's long past time to take Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to the woodshed; and most of all, the continued reliance on neocons Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, and the rest of the Goldman Sachs refugees in the Treasury Department. Again, the consensus in the conservative neighbor/friend(?)/family milieu is Obama now owes the powers that be who let him get elected, therefore stalling any real reforms he promised. Personally, I'm still hoping there's method to his madness, but my hope is fading.

smipypr

Is someone paying you to write this crap, or is it just a hobby? You and your fellow Republicans lost the last two elections, so get used to it. The criminals from the Bush administration are headed for prison. Senator Al Franken is helping assure the confirmation of Judge Sotomayor. And you bigots are even further discredited.

Am I a Republican?

Tom Not in any way. I grew up and still live in DuPage County, IL - the deep, dark heart of conservatism. One of my main points with conservatives I know is the '06 midterms and the '08 general election is a repudiation of Republican/conservative governance.I voted for Obama in the US Senate race, as well as the Illinois Presidential primary and general election. My politics lean just a little to the right of Leon Trotsky. In fact, when I was in the brokerage business years ago, as far as I know, I was the only registered broker who voted for the Communist Worker's Party ticket. Don't give me a hard time for doubting the promises of President Obama. I'm a suburban 55 year old who lost his job($34,500/year) in December of '04. I was unemployed 20 months, and now make less than half what I did before. My life savings are gone. I may well lose the home I grew up in. I heard what Obama was saying, and I hoped there might be something in it for people like myself. I hoped he would prosecute the members of the Bush administration, as well as the complicit Democrats in Congress. I hope Judge Sotomayor is confirmed, and I also hope Obama breaks tradition and appoints several more justices. Call me a goof, but I am NOT an Republican.

do your job

This is why Conyers stopped his impeachment inquiries saying that "he had many others situations to worry about". When asked "will he consider hearings" he quipped "MAKE me do it. Amazing how many Republicans and Democrats are recipients of donations from Corporations that are responsible for all that is wrong with just about everything. So the Dems' are not spineless for not pursuing the fraud that has been commited on the public, some of them are complict. Is it really beyond the realm of reality that we sincerely are governed by the rule of law, which is what this Country is bulit on. Forget about Commissions there has never been a Commission that indicted anyone (whitewashing) Hearings are the only thing that will get Justice. Unfortunately for us the truth will expose them all, so that is why we shall never see it. God Bless America. A.Lawrence

Investigate, Indict, Prosecute

Although there have recently been reports that Attorney General Eric Holder might start some sort of investigation of the Bush/Cheney policy of torture of prisoners, it’s not clear that an indictment of Bush or Cheney will be sought.

It’s been six months since Bush and Cheney left office and neither of them has been called to account for the flood of crimes everyone in the world knows they committed. Even most of those who supported the Bush/Cheney political Cosa Nostra know that they committed crimes - they simply don’t care. They agree with the Nixon assertion, “if the President does it [more particularly THEIR President] it’s legal.”

These are some of the crimes we know of to a certainty: 1) waging an unprovoked war, 2) imprisoning people without charge and denying them the constitutional right of habeas corpus, 3) ordering the torture of prisoners (sometimes resulting in death), 4) kidnaping people and rendering them to other nations to be tortured, 5) wiretapping citizens without a court order, 6) exposing at least one CIA operative for Machiavellian political purposes.

In addition there are many questions concerning the events of 9/11 that have not been investigated suggesting that these events were orchestrated, or at least permitted, by the Bush/Cheney administration. The “investigation” by the 9-11 commission under restrictions imposed by the Bush administration and Congressional Republicans was a joke, a total whitewash. A new, honest and thorough investigation must be conducted.

President Obama has been a disappointment by not directing the Justice Department to investigate all of the Bush/Cheney crimes. Apparently the President, in his zeal to accommodate Republicans (who could not care less about bipartisan cooperation) is willing to be complicit in the cover-up of these crimes.

If America is to have one set of laws for the people and another for those in positions of power our democracy is dead and we will soon be under the thumb of our dictatorial masters. Our rights will evaporate, e.g., publication of columns like this one will be cause for arrest (an eventuality that would no doubt delight some “conservative” readers.)

Unless President Obama changes his policy of “looking ahead - not back” (Orwellian newspeak for whitewash) we will eventually elect another Bush-like despot and become a nation of cowering sheep meekly following the dictates of the leader whose actions will be declared as “necessary for our protection” from whatever “enemies of America” the leader contrives for us.

Like Alberto Gonzales’ view of the Geneva Conventions the constitution will be regarded as “quaint” as the people are enslaved. Of course, mindless self-styled “patriots” will boast, “they’ll never make a slave of ME!” as they goose-step to the drumbeat of the leader.

Obama: Neocon OZ

Get a clue. Repeat after me: "The President of the United States does not work for Me. The Congress of the United States does not work for me. The Supreme Court of the United States does not work for me." Never forget this, or you may pay dearly. Also, remember that the primary symptom of insanity is believing that you can really make a difference. We are living in a nearly invisible prison, ruled by a cabal of authoritarian psychopaths, who are increasingly feeling less and less need to pay lip service to the illusion they have cast for us. They are as the call themselves "The Masters of the Universe", and they will remain so until the balance of power shifts and they are replaced by another set of criminals, who sell the same deception under a more appealing label. Obama can do nothing other than continue to make the illusion seem more appealing. He's the pretty face that they have put on the horror. Good Guy/Bad Guy, he's simply the current Good Guy, but never lose sight of the fact that they both work for the same people; their goal is the same. He passes out the intoxicating elixir of HOPE, but where's the beef? The more things "change", the more they remain the same. I was never a fan of Soviet style communism. It was just a different favour of the same exploitation we endure, only paying lip service to Marxism, instead of democracy. However, at this point I believe Marx really nailed it when it came to an analysis of power and the capitalist system. The real HOPE here is that he was also correct in his judgement that capitalism is a necessary stage(and perhaps the next-to-last stage) in the evolution of a communist society. I'm guessing that he knew that capitalistic greed and exploitation would ultimately blowback on itself. And, I believe the capitalists instinctively know this . They know that one day the birds will come home to roost, and their goose is cooked: that is their real fear of the "evil" of communism. If Marx was correct, I await the coming of an unprecidented Reign of Terror, and pray that beyond that horizon lies a kinder and gentler social order. Never assume malice where stupidity would suffice. Hanlon's Razor

YES

If we don't demand that our leaders obey the law, why should we expect anyone else to obey them?

WHy he can't go too far

The biggest crimes are the 2 wars, and Obama and most of Congress committed that crime. The (open) secret to getting away with crimes against humanity is to recruit enough people into the criminal gang.

Does this hurt the nation? Of course. The cost of forgiveness at the end of the Civil War is still being paid, also for the coverup of the FDR/military betrayal of the US in getting the US into WW2, and likewise for the totally insane cold war strategy of threatening to kill all human life as a basic war-fighting strategy.

Hell, yes

If some one doesn't stand trial and if some one doesn't go to jail for all the illegal and semi-legal and unconstitutional crap that went on during Bush II's administration we might as well just give in to the inevitable, stop voting for these frauds and let the corporations run things. Thus far Obama's done nothing to change the shift of political power. To date he has shown his policies to be as accommodating toward Wall Street interests, at the expense of everyone else, as Bill Clinton's.

Obama, at the very least, should put up some kind of show for public consumption that his administration is not above the law and neither is any other president's, especially that of George W. Bush. That might go a long way toward restoring the unwashed's faith in the system if nothing else.

True, if AG Holder's investigation--and I think we should be aware that it may be more in the nature of a cover-up than actual fact-finding--discloses any indictable wrong-doing by members of the Bush II administration, DOJ prosecution will only go as high as the lowest ranking functionary involved in the torture memos. John Yoo, be prepared to do some hard time. Perhaps Dick Cheney will send you a vacation picture-post card from time to time.

To fail to act is to condone

By failing to investigate the egregious crimes of the Bush administration - and I speak specifically about 9/11 - Barack Obama and Eric Holder are rapidly becoming accessories after the fact. To fail to investigate is to let it stand, making the entire administration culpable, and accepting the consequences for our nation and our legal system, not to mention letting stand a blood libel against an entire people and ethnic group. As in 1967, in the USS Liberty attack, the United States was subjected to a false flag operation - an act of war. In that case, even though it was covered up by the Johnson administration, we knew who perpetrated the act - our "ally, Israel, and we know that they did their level best to send a U. S. war ship in international waters to the bottom with all hands, strafing the lifeboats, until interrupted by other elements of the U. S. Navy. In the case of 9/11, the evidence is very clear, but is embargoed en masse by the mainstream media of this country. The new administration has been very clear that they have no interest in a real investigation, even though a scientific investigation has shown to a certainty that explosives based on nano-thermite blew up the towers in New York, and recent work by Citizen's Investigative Team showed conclusively that the Pentagon could not have been hit by the plane claimed to have been American Flt. 77. Google "National Security Alert" to see the case laid out in full detail. The torture debate is treated as the outer limit of what MIGHT be investigated. That is a red herring designed to make the American people believe that torture is the most serious charge to be leveled against this thuggish regime. It is not. While it is bad enough in itself, and worthy of investigation, what we have is a clear, unequivocal case of high treason committed by the highest officials in the land. The American people deserve the truth and we all should demand it. Our foreign policy, constitutional rights, and entire relationship with our government has been shaped by 9/11. The poisonous "USA Patriot Act" continues to fester and the Department of Homeland Security has time after time shown itself to be an incompetent bureaucracy set against the American people in order to impose an increasingly authoritarian atmosphere in our daily lives. Take off your shoes when you travel, Frisk that grandmother, obey! Big Brother is watching you all the time so you better not step out of line. 9/11 justifies all. I say Enough!

Not too "forgiving" - not wanting accountability

1. I disagree with those who think that going after the multiple national security crimes of the Bush administration should has a lower priority than health care, the economy etc etc.

A president, and the country too, for that matter, has to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

2. I don't think Obama is being "forgiving" at least not in the sense of have a generous minded tolerance for the foibles and failings of others. I think he knows this is a huge problem. If he goes for a serious and thorough investigation that could likely lead to the uncovering of crimes - and the prosecution of high officials that should follow such discovery - he ties his own hands. His hands should be tied; our government in our name and with the excuse of "keeping us safe" should not be violating U.S. or international law.

But now that Obama is the chief executive he likes executive power just fine, as Cheney foresaw as he aggrandized executive power for future administrations. So Obama can promise us he won't engage in the worst abuses of the Bush administration but such promises are just hot air. If there's no public and legal accountability we're in serious trouble.

I think Obama doesn't want to have an investigation, but if Holder has a bit of spine and if public pressure is kept on Obama may not be able to stop it.

So, I think we shouldn't throw in the towel but work and work and work for investigations and accountability. Otherwise our Constitution is gone and we are "cooked."

Responsibility

The President of the United States' job is to uphold the Constitution. Bush consistently went against the Constitution. President Obama would make a huge mistake to let go of past errors, more than errors in fact for they are appalling transgressions of the laws of this country. It does take time but the moral standing of the US would be greatly enhanced. In fact, the rest of the world does not understand the present government's lack of interest in those things.

Obama and bipartisanship

Oldwoman says yes, he is too lenient and forgiving. Unfortunately, in this adolescent country of ours that just loves to war make, his many high-level characteristics are seen as weakness by the multitude among us who cannot see or hear. Washington probably has him wrapped up in chains. Of course, Congress is too, by the big corporations via their gazillions of lobbyists who threaten to deny re-election if they don't vote the way the big guys want them to. It's all so hideous and beyond redemption that I recommend we all turn our backs on it and focus on spirituality. That would succeed far better than all the throwing of dirt by the insane.

punishment

Bush did not uphold the Constitution time and time again. Were the people outraged THEN? No, they were too worried that AlQueda was going to run down THEIR street and capture THEM. Americans were easy to manipulate through fear. They even elected the terrorists a second time. It is finished. The country needs health care, the economy fix, jobs, schools, roads, ending the obscene wars bush and cheney got us into. Should we spend years prosecuting the group? We could, but it would destroy our country because it would divert from what is needed. The American people made a choice in 2004 and now they have to live with it. Let's move on. These guys should suffer with the eventual success of America. If prosecution goes forward make it short and sweet. I would love to see Cheney smirking behind a bar but it is not going to happen.

Too Forgiving of the Bush/Cheney Crimes?

Serious crimes need to be investigated, not ignored. I vote YES.

Let's Face It

Those of us who have been around awhile still believe that Nixon got off "scot free" by Ford. In my opinion, the American people (outside of the Beltway and the power brokers and elite), are seething with anger and disgust. Not the least of this is what they perceive as the "getting away with it" of the members of the Bush Administration, and yes, those members of Congress who enabled them. We are talking throwing our resources down the crapper -- money, people, thousands of deaths and permanent disabilities, our economy, and our rule of law. Any President, but particularly one who promised "change" is now expected to do the "right" thing. In the meantime, it seems as though everything is going along its own merry way -- according to those who have already thrown us in the sewer. We,the People will NOT forgive this.

The Audacity of Forgiveness

The administration is being waaaay too forgiving of Bush et al. It may come back to hurt them, if not now then later in the history books. It makes Obama and company an accessory to crimes if they don't get serious against Bush. The majority of people would be behind them. So far, I've been less than impressed with Obama's mettle. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

President Obama and dissapointment

Mr. Obama has kept all the bad habits of the Bush administration and seems to be going down the same destructive path. Why would we grant yet more power to the Federal Reserve? Disband these big bankers, make some effort to keep the super rich, super powerful, shadow government guys under control. Get Arne Duncan OUT of the department of education; he wants to do away with universal education in the United States. Get rid of Geithner. Get rid of Gates. Get rid of Summers. Get rid of both wars. Do what you promised when you were running for President. After all these things are done you can credibly hold BUSH and CHENEY to account.

No One is Above the Law

The President of the United States is responsible for upholding the Constitution.  We know that the Bush Administration repeatedly violated the Constitution.  It is President Obama's sworn duty to hold them accountable.

Constitutional Responsibility

shell_beach Obama was a Constitutional Law Professor!?! Does the constitution mean anything to anybody anymore? How many people on all sides died in the stupid war of Vietnam? How many people died in the Iraq Wars? How many people died in all wars? We are war's fodder for some people who are in control of government, the economy, religion, and other aspects of society and who make make it personal to us. Yet they all die too eventually. How stupid!! What about solving the aging problem and finding a way to travel to other planets outside this solar system until we find out what GOD we should be praying to or if we even should be praying? Then all those who preach hate and who want to destroy others could do it on their own planets in their own solar systems. Captain,USAF, 1965-1970

Constitutional Responsibility

"Does the Constitution mean anything to anybody anymore? How many people on all sides died in the stupid war of Vietnam..." The Constitution of the United States of America has meant more to me than anything, anyone, or any any since I was old enough to read this document. Captain USAF, 1965-1970~ ignorance or greed or fear or power or criminal negligence or laziness or malice are but a few of the plagues which have dimmed and blinded too many Americans and all of the 'leaders' of America. Reagan's first utterance as President was his grand first arrow shot at the heart of what had remained of our constitution, against government. "Government is the problem; the private sector is the Solution". The illegal invasion and war against the sovereign nation of Iraq was for OIL, a private not a public good;the invasion and war against the so called Taliban in Afghanistan is for OIL and Location; as an energy GATEWAY. To benefit? The Private Sector! Our men and women have been thrown like so much fodder into the machine of death; their lives mean zero outside of their own families; yes we shall honor them as much as we can but in reality, we read 8 killed today, 7 killed yesterday; sent into this disasterous deadly primitive death zone with the DOD knowing there are way too few helicopters for the task ahead, yet sent in there anyway... with no responsibility or accountability by the leadership or by us the people. I'm spiritually sickened beyond belief in this grand old what had been our country; and take pills simply to live... hoping on good days, we will wake the f*ck up and explore the universe both micro and macro, for the good of humankind... but I know I'll die first. I have no idea how to bring any pressure to bear on decision makers as they don't listen and quite frankly don't care what we think except maybe for an ADHD 3 seconds of a moment... God Bless You Captain USAF...for you have indeed been to the other side and know of what you speak. Sincerely, D. Shatin

The Rich and Connected are Above The Law

Obviously there are two justice systems in the United States, one for normal people and one for rich people. The rich people can get away with murder, steal billions, cause bank failures and walk away with obscene profits, and start wars against innocent people to steal their resources. The rich can use our armed forces as their own personal thugs and button men to enforce their greedy rape of the planet's resources. Meanwhile, the po' folk had better mind their own business, and toe the line. Our prison industry (owned by the aforementioned rich scumbag bastards) needs more fodder and more slave laborers. On a happier note, I have heard that rich people taste just like chicken. That's worth knowing in the coming depression. Ratshark D. Bassplayer
