Honduras and the U.S. History of Hands of Blood in Central America: School of the Americas, Anyone?

No, there's no proof that the U.S. was behind the coup of a leftist president in Honduras, or that Obama signed off on it with a wink-and-a-nod (God help us!), but given the U.S. history of supporting right wing bloody regimes, coups and militias in Central America, the likelihood that there was rogue or secret CIA involvement -- or military advisors from the former School of the Americas that trained Latin American military leaders in suppression and torture -- runs pretty high, given the history of U.S. intervention.

The School of the Americas, located at Fort Benning, Georgia, tried to fool us all by renaming itself the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation."  That sure is a warm and fuzzy branding, isn't it?

But given's President Obama's deep-seated aversion to "rocking the boat" and actually accomplishing real change, we suspect the School of the Americas (SOA) today is pretty much the same as the old one.

For decades, the U.S. controlled central America through a string of tin horn military killers trained at the SOA.  As South and Central America recently saw many nations turn liberal through the popular vote -- and the voice of Hugo Chavez grated in the ears of Neo-Cons -- even the Bush Administration feared taking on a populace that had grown tired of proxy U.S. rule through murderous dictators.

So no one can say today that the U.S. greenlighted the so-far bloodless coup in Honduras (it was unusual that they didn't kill the leftist President, just exiled him.)  But there's no question our decades old Latin American policy and the School of the Americas provided the context and history for the Honduran coup.

Obama hasn't shown himself as one with the courage to stand up to the U.S. military or even change it much.  You can bet your bottom dollar there were a few American hands behind what happened in Honduras.  We just can't say just yet who they belonged too.

Given what we read in Eduardo Geleanos "Open Veins of Latin America," as well as what we all know very well, it is the duty of the people of Honduras to execute everyone rich and everyone American and establish a just society. The tree of Honduran liberty cries out for its manure.
