Most Wealthy Liberals Won't Back Progressive Media: Sheldon Drobny Found That Out the Hard Way
THE BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG
By Mark Karlin
I first saw Sheldon Drobny asking a question during the initial "Free Press" media reform conference. It was held in Madison, Wisconsin, in 2003.
Shelly wanted a panel of funders to explain why wealthy media reform advocates weren’t investing in buying up media outlets, which would change the Republican corporate bias of the press faster than complaining about it.
It would be a couple of years before I formally met Shelly and his wife Anita, but he certainly had made an impression on me by cutting to the chase.
Shelly and Anita went on to found Air America (from which they were eased out) and then Nova M (which has just gone under).
I write this now because Shelly has suffered a nervous breakdown as a result of failing to raise enough money to keep Nova M alive, the fall in the value of his own investments, and a series of lawsuits involving legal accusations back and forth regarding Nova M. On top of that, Randi Rhodes and the Drobnys parted ways, leaving Rhodes currently off the airwaves -- and with the demise of Nova M, Randi is going to need to find an alternative means of airing her program.
My wife and I had dinner with the Drobnys a couple of times, talking family and progressive media. Sheldon was still finding in 2008 that, for the most part, wealthy progressives weren’t willing to sufficiently invest in building a liberal media infrastructure.
I’ve read a lot of rumors casting blame regarding the problems of Air America and Nova M over the years. Far be it from me to know the truth amidst the bickering. In financially stressful situations, a lot of fingers get pointed, mistakes are made, and egos clash – all around.
But out of this debacle (and the still uncertain future of Air America with its ever-changing roster), I am reminded of the question that Shelly Drobny asked on a frigid winter day in Madison in 2003.
Why indeed do wealthy liberals – in general – refrain from financially backing progressive media? (BuzzFlash, for example, is supported by our readership, not by any large infusion of funds or advertising. That’s why we struggle -- with much heartburn -- to get by each month.)
The vision of Sheldon Drobny was to build a progressive radio presence that would compete with the still forceful propaganda voice of right wing dominance on the airwaves. (According to "Talkers Magazine," the top five 2009 radio show hosts are all right wingers. Only our good friend Thom Hartmannn makes the top ten as tenth.)
But Drobny found – to his distress (and ultimately a nervous breakdown) – that with the passage of years, the big liberal investors were putting their bucks into campaigns, some liberal "think tanks" and projects, but not – with rare exception – into ownership of the media itself.
Whatever the legal and personality issues the Drobnys are embroiled in, Sheldon should be saluted for fighting a lonely battle along with his wife Anita.
The biased "Republican talking points" way that the stimulus debate was framed by right wing radio and the corporate media is a testament to how prescient Shelly’s vision was back when I first heard him address the issue of media ownership.
We wish him a quick recovery.

He Chose The Wrong Strategy
While Drobny's goals were noble, his strategy doomed him to failure. He can't fight the media on their home turf. Maybe all he knew was radio and television, but those who are more technology-savvy know that such media are a dead-end for innovation or change. Their owners are too entrenched in the establishment to change easily (see for example how MSNBC remains a right-wing mouthpiece early in the day, despite shifting to a progressive perspective in the evening).
If Drobny wasn't so locked into the already established communications media, he would have noted the rise in influence that the Internet has brought for alternatives to corporate propaganda. Major bloggers are being interviewed and quoted by the so-called MSM, and they operate on a small fraction of the electric bill of a single radio station with a coverage that embraces the entire world.
It would have made more sense for Drobny to adapt to the changing world rather than sacrifice himself on the Altar of Good Intentions. His media skills may well have proven very useful to the blogoshpere, but now it will have to evolve without his input.
Sheldon’s strategy was spot on!
This is really the problem: The Internet Savior.

This has happened now twice
It is not unremarkable that AAR produced a TV star and a US senator, while Nova M ended up with the two ex-AAR hosts that were too volatile for television.
Since I Don't Know Who You ARE, "Anonymous" Poster
See my comments below about online radio/podcasts. If Ms. Rhodes is too "volatile for television" (and it doesn't take much if you're on the Left - while if you're on the Right you can get away w/weekly torture and Steven King will praise your "surprisingly real take on terrorism!"), then maybe she belongs online instead where she can be her own boss.
And FYI? Hillary's sleazy, racist campaign against a fellow Democrat while sucking up to the Rethuglican Enemy McBush? That deserved every nasty thing Ms. Rhodes and every other decent Progressive said about her! The Clintons are now, and have always been, Repig Lite DLC "Centrist" sellouts - period.
Then why did you vote for them, "Doc"?
You used to be a conservative, then a Libertarian, now a Progressive, a Clinton-supporter, then a Clinton-hater, a Nader-supporter, then a Nader-hater, ...
Are you going to be back here in a year or two trashing Obama as a Repug-lite DLC-centrist sell-out?
Then again, .............. a year from now you'll probably think that's a good thing.
Okay, YMan - and What is YOUR Opinion On the Topic at Hand?
So, why not contribute to the discussion at hand, and let us know what are your views on progressive talk radio...?
You missed this one.
Who Are You Really, Please?
As for this "BuzzFlash" anon poster - tell us a bit more about what you mean rather than just tossing around accusations, why don't you?
I hear ya
Since I Don't Know Anybody at NovaM or AAR, I Can't
I am neither damning nor praising these people - though I would point out, in fairness, that part of original AAR's problem was that many major sponsors blacklisted the original AAR back during the height of the Bush Regime. After the takeover, there are plenty of AAR listeners who feel it's now more "Centrist" than Progressive since they shed many of their favorite hosts (Al Franken, Kent Jones, Sam Seder, Randi Rhodes) - and more recently developing unwelcome (to them, anyway) ties with MSNBC thanks to Rachel Maddow's growing popularity. Rachel herself, claiming burnout, has reduced her radio show to an audio rebroadcast of her MSNBC program....
IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT!!!!! It's YOURS!
"Why indeed do ..." not answered
Perhaps by their pragmatic natures, real Lefty's do not wish to emulate the Righty's game?
Hartmann and Shultz types are the most successful "liberal" talkers because they really pose no threat to the powers-that-be.
Perhaps some investigative reporting is in order
Good luck with that!
Maron/Seder
The other day I was listening to Randi Rhodes' first show on NovaM, which I still had on my MP3 player. It was interesting to hear her account then of how great the NovaM folks were, and how great Mike Malloy was. When Randi got sh*tcanned from AAR (and she essentially did), Malloy went on a rant about it and gave the distinct impression that he was the muscle behind her move to NovaM. Now, in the aftermath of her departure, Malloy is "Randi who? I've only met her twice, so stop bothering me about it." It's quite odd.
Right now Marc Maron and Sam Seder are pioneering a web-based show every day called Break Room Live, from 3-4 PM weekdays. It's a 30-40 minute talk/sketch/interview/rant show, with call-in and chat for the rest of the time. AAR is behind it, they're paying for it. The show deserves support for the way these two guys have been treated by prior management of AAR, and so that the current suits get the idea that the kind of loyal listener base these guys have isn't easy to build.
Last year I did some volunteering for a local Congressional race that was mostly run by young kids in their 20's. They'd never even HEARD of Air America, and they don't listen to AM radio. What Maron and Seder are doing is the future of radio -- Web-based radio that isn't beholden to corporate interests. It's going to take a while to get here and it will require free or cheap ubiquitous Wifi, but it's coming.

Which Is EXACTLY Where Progressive Radio Should Start, B@B!
But the good news is (and you know this already, B@B) - broadcast radio's dying thanks to options like online radio, podcasts, Pandora, and iTunes playlists...coupled with OTA radio stations that play the same seventy songs all the time or, well, nothing but Right-Wing or Khrister or jockboy wannabe bloviators who are no longer a desirable demographic for advertisers. Fortunately, the cost and hassle of starting an online show or even an online network is trivial compared to that of starting even a low-power radio station, your voice can be heard worldwide - and there's no FCC regulations regarding what you can and cannot say, either. Though the advertiser money is equally trivial for now, you could quite easily pay for your infrastructure (equipment, bandwidth, etc.) out of donations - and pay yourself and your talent out of advertising once you start getting some, as Leo Laporte's TWiT Network of technology podcasts does. If the Left moves online and starts networks and programs there like Maron & Seder currently have, we can hold the high ground by the time the Korporate Right gets their heads out of their asses. Sure you hear get Right-Wing talk radio online as well as over-the-air - but right now they're complacent right where they are, and consider "online radio" a negligible value-add at best. The Left is hungry - for respect, for relevancy, and for a chance to Take The Right Down Hard! At this point, online is where television was in 1948 - a brand-new exciting medium which not many people had yet but was full of possibilities, and the creators were making up the rules as they went. If we move there now before everybody gets their WiMax-enabled digital media players or EVDO/3G data phones, the Left will be there to offer them content when they arrive.... :)

Could it be, rich liberals are shareholders in the M$M?
Mark, as you know, this is the same question that Robert Parry of Consortiumnews.com has been asking for several years.
I think the answer may be simpler then we think.
After all many wealthy liberals are trust-fund babies. For instance, the Kennedy clan, for all the good works they do and for all the liberal causes they support, from improving health care "access" for millions of under- and uninsured Americans to cleaning up the environment, not one of them owns or manages a business that actually produces anything.
The Kennedys are from being members of the "the idle rich." However I would hazard a guess that the lion's share of the individual wealth of a Ted or Robert, Jr. or a Caroline Kennedy, and that of all other family members derives from the stock-laden trust fund set up the family patriarch Joseph Kennedy, Sr. And I will also hazard a guess that the canny Kennedy clan patriarch larded the family portfolio with stock in the M$M as would any wise investor. And we can be sure that Joe Kennedy, Sr. wasn't the first nor last founder of a family fortune to invest in the M$M.
So when a young fellow like Mr. Drobny comes along, hat in hand, to a member of "the liberal elite" seeking start up capital for a new progressive media outlet, why would a someone already invested, stock-wise, in the M$M wish to risk resources in a new venture like "liberal" talk radio? Heavens, the trust-fund managers would have a fit!
After all, the M$M is very good to and for the trust-fund baby class. Where else in the world can a rich chump like Donald Trump get so much TV face time?
