New York Post Non-Apology for Racist Cartoon Makes Monkeys of Us All

A search of Google will reveal that most of the corporate mainstream press headlined that the New York Post had "apologized" for its racist cartoon depicting President Obama as a monkey. But the New York Post did not apologize by any common meaning of the word in a subsequent editorial: it defended the cartoon and mocked all fair-minded Americans by "apologizing" if the cartoon that the Post claimed was innocuous "offended" anyone.

In short, the fault lies in our eyes and sensitivities, the Post told us, not in their barely coded bigotry. One of our regular BuzzFlash "lighter side" contributors is a cartoonist who got it right. As our "Pablo" observes in his toon entitled "Offended by Apology": "It was one of those 'If anyone was offended' apologies"; Well, "I'm offended at those who were not offended."

The non-apology "apology" is a staple response of Republicans who find that people have caught them wearing white hoods -- and invariably the corporate media accepts what is really another insult and defense of racism as an "apology."

Sean Delonas, the staff cartoonist at the Rupert Murdoch publication, has a long history of bigotry in his cartoons, as BuzzFlash revealed in a news alert. You'd have to be brain dead, particularly with a photo of Obama and an NY Post attack on the "stimulus" plan preceding the racist cartoon, not to recognize what Delonas and the print counterpart to Murdoch's FOX News were up to.

On February 19th, we bestowed the BuzzFlash Media Putz of the Week "Award" on the New York Post:

It's not like the New York Post is known for taste or decorum anywhere in its ink-stained, tabloid, "I need a shower after I read it" pages. And there is a certain expectation that cartoons will occasionally be tacky. But a violent, degrading cartoon without a funny or relevant analogy is going far too far, and so we name the New York Post the Media PUTZ of the Week.

White straight male Christian entitlement is what was the basis for the Civil War. Rupert Murdoch -- in his media empire that includes the Post, FOX and the Wall Street Journal -- continually carries on that shameful tradition.

The New York Post and the other Murdoch media outlets remain unapologetic about making monkeys of us all.

The cartoon is racist - the non-apology is even more offensive and even more racist than the cartoon. I dont think inability to see the obvious is racist - I would just call it insensitive. If I had to choose who to throw off a ship - the racist or the insensitive guy - I would throw the racist off - but if the insensitive guy clings onto the racist and goes overboard with him that is okay.

I feel very very sorry for Americans who are prejudiced against Black Americans. Black Americans are the most intelligent race politically with less than 5 percent voting for Conservative Republicans. Asians vote Conservative Republican at a higher rate than Blacks. Hispanics vote Conservative Republican at a higher rate than Blacks. Whites vote Conservative Republican at a higher rate than Blacks. Why not listen to the political geniuses say?

I'm suprised no one caught on to this sooner, but the guy just went after mankind in general, and there is so many metaphors in this thing I cannot believe it. First things first, I agree with people who say the "Monkey" is suppose to represent President Barack Obama, I'm sorry to all those who wish Al Sharpton to be wrong, but it's obviously the case. Also, the way the cop is saying it "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." But the extra point I would like to bring up about this cartoon, is has any body realized yet that not only did this guy go after President Obama, whether racially motivated or no, but also the NYPD as well! If the original incident had involved any other animal that can harm humans, such as a bear, wolf, tiger or cape buffalo, the cartoon would never have been drawn, because it would have made no sense. What would two cops standing over a dead bear talking about the stimulus mean? The stimulus was written by Bear Bryant? Vermont Teddy Bears? Winnie the Pooh? The only way the cartoon works is to portray the stimulus as having been written by a monkey, which is one of the more common racist images. And complaining that black people speak ill of whites is like the victim of a crime is equal to the criminal.I'm surprised you have internet access in that outhouse.

The cartoon refers to the author of the stimulus package. Congress not the President is the author, but you are one of those people who likes to throw the race card every chance you see through your black and white glasses. He penned not a word in the stimulus package. A google search of political cartoons shows that a monkey is the animal of choice for cartoonists. In this particular cartoon which was penned just after the shooting of the chimp in California, the cartoon depicts what happens when people act without thinking of the consequences.

Satire is often not intended to be funny. Readers and others are sorely mistaken to assume satire, whether written, spoken or drawn, is to always be funny.

Satire targets human nature and our human nature is often not funny, not at all. Seems these days we humans spend most of our time stealing, swindling, raping, murdering and engaging in warfare.

When we are not busy effecting a Ponzi scheme, we are busy killing each other. Rarely, today, do we examine these issues of personal and societal responsibilities, which are rarely of a funny nature.

But we must also have a well funded Justice Department that is always on the alert for violators of a person civil rights. It must be staffed by tens of thousands of our most liberal minded investigators. They should be given the freedom and time to dig deep and wide. I am anything but a proponent of political correctness, which is often used as a smokescreen in violation of the First Amendment to try and suppress thoughts and ideas. Anybody who has any knowledge at all of the history of editorial cartoons in the United States will clearly see the blatancy in this cartoon. Those who choose to remain ignorant, insensitive, or racist will be mesmerized by how "clever" it is. The concept for this cartoon clearly arises from the nineteenth century. Perhaps that's why there are so many people rushing to defend it -- our education system is deeply rooted the nineteenth century. American socio-political awareness still has a very long way to go. As a black woman it really gets to me that our men have been so mistreated .My dad served this country ,and could not even get a decent job,when he got back.I JUST THINK THAT YOU HAVEto hit them in the pocket book to make a difference.They cant be embrassed,are you kidding!!Iam for freedom of the press and speach ,but we hold the last and mightiest,card which is our dollar.And they should not get ours.There are other news papers to read.

That is unquestionably a racist cartoon. As a caucasian American who neither voted for Obama nor McCain, and a skeptic of any "news story" the media demands our distracted focus upon, I can clearly see that a chimp who attacked a lady, has nothing to do with this piece of trash. What we should all be asking ourselves is, while this non-story is being waved in our faces, what is really happening in the world that the media wishes to keep us from paying attention to?
