Elizabeth Warren Should be a Role Model in the Obama Administration Instead of a Pariah

ELIZABETH WARREN

If virtue is bestowed by judging from one's enemies, then Elizabeth Warren may be our consumer protection Joan of Arc. After all, Timothy Geithner -- a Zelig of Wall Street appeasement and failure -- is opposed to Warren heading the Consumer Financial Protection Board, just created in the "finance reform" legislation. Why would Geithner oppose Warren? Because he is a Wall Street "Made Man," and thinks that she would take actions that might expose the crooks of lower Manhattan.

But Elizabeth Warren has been the one true hero in an Administration and Congress jam-packed with finance industry puppets. As head of a Congressional Oversight Panel to oversee the Federal bailout, she has sought accountability and transparency, only to be rebuffed by Geithner and other White House appointees. In fact, the Consumer Financial Protection Board is her idea, given all the roadblocks that she encountered to exposing the cozy relationship between the executive branch and the finance industry, Warren proposed the idea of a consumer protection agency.

We recall watching Warren in a guest appearance on The Daily Show awhile back and she was marvelous: frank, charming, transparent, and a bit mystified as to why the White House would hide information about how TARP money was being distributed and to whom. In many ways, Elizabeth Warren has the attitude of "change" and protection of the average citizen from financial predators that we expected from Obama.

Warren is a Harvard law professor who also specializes in the economic challenges facing middle class families. She understands the con game being played out on behalf of the wealthy on Wall Street, and for that she has earned Geithner's enmity. It is extremely disappointing, to say the least, that Obama still relies on Geithner, as Secretary of the Treasury, for financial advice for the nation: Geithner works to protect Wall Street schemes, and Warren advocates for Main Street.

We are proud to honor Elizabeth Warren with the BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award. She should be a role model in the Obama Administration instead of a Pariah.

There must be an element of sexism in Geithner's opposition to Warren.

After all, one of the events that helped seal Lawrence Summers demise as president of Harvard was his totally boneheaded remark about women maybe not really being fit for science. Just so hard to take those women seriously.

Further, powerful men just hate to have to deal with women who are as smart, or smarter, than they are. They'll deny it up and down, but every female over 25 has already heard a snootful of it in their lives.

I read that one objection to Warren's appointment was that she didn't have much administrative experience. But one of the 2 men mentioned as another candidate is a 44 year old U Michigan law professor, male. Now how is it likely, that whatever his other wonderful qualifications might be, that he has more experience than Warren who is in her early 60's?????

How much of a corporate tool is Obama?

It is extremely disappointing, to say the least, that Obama still relies on Geithner, as Secretary of the Treasury, for financial advice for the nation: Geithner works to protect Wall Street schemes, and Warren advocates for Main Street.

It was extremely disappointing when Obama appointed Geithner (and Summers) in November 2008 in the first place. It strains credulity that he didn't know they were in bed with the banksters. If he didn't, he's not as bright as we've been led to believe. But of course, I believe he knew.

Obama's last chance to show that he's not a complete tool of the corporate plutocrats is to support Warren. Many are saying this, from Cenk Uygar to Simon Johnson. We shall see.

I also saw her on Bill Maher (of all places) and there she was frank, charming, transparent AND bright as hell. I agree with all positive assessments.

The last woman to stand up for what is right was Brooksley Born of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission during the Clinton Administration. She saw the dangers that unregulated derivatives posed and ran afoul of Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin (not to be confused with Sec. of Labor Robert Reich) and Larry Summers. After her clash with these titans of finance her power to regulate derivatives was removed and she resigned.

I'm afraid Warren was appointed for window dressing and that the Obama administration intends that she never wield any real power to protect us from the vultures on Wall Street. She deserves better.

Crooks don't like honest people looking over their shoulder. Elizabeth Warren should be running the Treasury Department and Geithner and his buddies should all be running the license plate line in Leavenworth.
