Movement to Overrule Supreme Court on Corporate Personhood
BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARY
by Chris Borland, The Democratic Activist
People,
The Bill of Rights was intended to provide inalienable rights to ordinary people, among them the right to free speech. The recent conservative Supreme Court ruling effectively eliminates the free speech rights of the American people, of ordinary citizens like you and me, by formally granting that right to ultra-rich, corporations -- which are NOT human, NOT people, NOT citizens, but artificial state-created entities -- to drown out every other competing voice in the political arena.
This is literally the theft of Americans' free speech rights by big-money right wing conservatives, who have been plotting for decades to ensure that NO other voices but theirs are spoken and heard in America. Their first victory was to buy and consolidate America's formerly free press (accomplished with the help of corporatist Democratic allies like Bill Clinton) into the hands of a few gargantuan media corporations. The goal of the conservative movement has always been free speech only for the rich, who they serve and wish to become, whose money they love and covet, and silence for everyone else.
Unless something is done quickly to undo their victory and defeat their crusade against the Constitutionally-guaranteed right of every American citizen to free speech, your children and mine will grow up in an America that is not a democracy, in which elections are bought and sold by the highest bidders, be they giant corporations, foreign billionaires, or even our nation's enemies.
Can you imagine that? An America that isn't a democracy? YOUR country? YOUR life, YOUR future, and lives and futures of your family members? Bought at an auction every two years by the richest individuals on the planet to do with as they please?
Such a surreal actuality takes no imagination, any longer. It's already happened. Right wing plans to steal our right to free speech, to control our lives and destinies and remove our ability to express ourselves as a free and independent people, have come to fruition. No, this is not a dream, not a scary movie. It is reality. Right here, right now, in America 3.0.
Please join the movement (see the forwarded email message, below) for a Constitutional amendment to formalize in law the obvious fact (obvious to all but scheming conservatives) that corporations are not living, breathing human beings, not "persons" and "citizens" entitled to the protections that the founders intended for ALL the people of this land, rich AND poor AND middle class, not just for a very few gentrified right-wing aristocrats at the very tip-top of the Wall Street investment class. who forgot long ago how to work for a living, and make most of their money sitting by their pools and mansions collecting dividend checks.
The framers of the Constitution never intended for those with more money to have more speech; in fact, this nation was founded precisely to PREVENT that very thing from happening!
For what have hundreds of thousands of American soldiers died? For OUR rights, of their friends and family and neighbors, for the rights of people ... or for the ability of a few king-like fat cats to utterly dominate nearly every facet or our existence?
Benito Mussolini, the ultra-right-wing father of fascism, defined it as "a merger of corporate and state power." Is that what is to become of the nation that brought democracy to the world?
You and I will decide, by what we do (or fail to do) in the next several months ... before the 2010 election finally inaugurates the period of "free speech for sale" in America.
Thank you.
Pass it on.

Don't make it worse
We may or may not be able to stop this most agressive fascist move from the right wing. But in any case, we have to stop making it worse by voting for corporate-funded parties.
Liberals seem to have a blind spot for the corporate corruption of the Democrats, as if they didn't let all the insanity of the Bush Administration happen. The Democrats, like the Republicans, receive the majority of their funding from corporate sources.
If the Democrats were really against fascism, they would have impeached Supreme Court justices after they awarded the 2000 election to Bush. Do you know how many Senate Democrats confirmed Scalia for the Supreme Court? All of them! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonin_Scalia).
An interesting overview of Scalia's fascist views can be found at http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_there_an_American_fascist_party
The Green Party doesn't accept any corporate money and has called for "...a new constitutional amendment affirming that 'We the People' means humans, not corporations" (http://gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=291). Compare that to the lip service of the Democrats.
Only 5% of the vote would get the Green Party matching Federal funds, and would send a strong message to the Democrats that representing corporate fascist interests instead of citizens' interests will cost them votes.
Vote Green!

For the time being...
Until such time as a Constitutional amendment can be passed, let's remember something: no one forces us to vote for corporate shills. All money really does is buy ads. It's up to voters to ignore them...or better yet, to take any slick, obviously well-funded and ubiquitous campaign ad as the first clue to who doesn't deserve our vote.
There's much evidence of the laziness and gullibility of American voters, but - appearances to the contrary - we don't go the polls in a hypnotic trance. If enough of us resolve not to act like sheep, perhaps a new idea can take hold: a shift from a public perception of "money = victory" to one of "money = defeat."
An uphill battle, admittedly, but you gotta start somewhere, dammit. We're the ones who put 'em there. It's up to us to take 'em out. We've got options. Participate in the primaries. Look at candidates using public funding. Talk to people to create a new public awareness. Corporations can blanket the airwaves, but they can't guide my hand in the voting booth. Nor yours.
Psychology...
...is what advertising is based on, and it reaches you in ways you are not prepared for, especially if you are uneducated about the topis, the people, or in general, as you will not have a strong mind or opinion. Our schools already ensure that we as a people, over all, are not that bright. Our way of life embraces advertising. While what you say is basically true, you're ignoring all the factors and in doing so, sound very much like personal responibility loving conservative.
Upset. Uproar. Uprise. The system is yours, take it back.
Just One Problem
This post doesn't manipulate emotions like FAUX Noise does. So for each person who gets the point from reading this, too many other people are going to run into the historical facts and blank out mentally. Only a loud rant from Limbaugh or O'Reilly or Glenn Beck will revive them to some semblance of sentience.
The first issue is how to reach these people before there is no more time to prevent the SCOTUS Coup of 2010 from succeeding.
