The US set about working to bring down the USSR by engaging them in a losing war in Afghanistan by supplying the Mujaheddin with military aid to fight the Russians.  Their ballooning military budget eventually broke the power of the USSR as their economy was strained to the breaking point. 

The US is following suit by investing its economic energy in two wars rather than in the production of peacetime goods.  By cutting taxes on the wealthy who have generally not shared their good fortune with the rest of us, but have continued to demand deficit spending for war and budget cuts for everything else our government is bleeding the strength of this country.  Since the money the top 1% of the population has retained has remained at the top, the burden has fallen to the rest of us, who cannot support government war spending as homes are foreclosed  and jobs fail.  China is surpassing us in the development of new, clean alternative energy sources while the US continues to consider "clean" coal and new nuclear power plants.  The continued myth of American exceptionalism is deluded.  Unless we stop living in the past, end the two wars which are draining our treasury and bankrupting our citizenry (with the aforementioned exception of the top 1%)and truly invest in our economy, the United States will become a failed experiment after 234 years.

The fear of terrorism is causing the US to tear itself to pieces like a large animal attacked by flies.  We must stop these wars which continue to wreak havoc and earn the enmity of citizens of nations far from our shores. We must stop bleeding this country with two wars while the super wealthy who run our economy continue to make terrible choices which enrich them and impoverish the rest of us.

The United States is living on borrowed time.  Unless we change course soon, we too will coming crashing down as the Soviet Union did.

To fight terrorism we must deal with it as the crime it is.  Wars are too big and impact too many innocent people to do anything but harm.  If we wish to control terrorism, we must end the wars and make amends for the harm we've done.  Speeches won't bring back the dead or stop more terrible things being done now and in the future to the innocent.  Speeches will not stop the depletion of our economic strength and the death and permanent injury to those serving in our armed forces.  Mercenary forces damage both our treasury and our reputation abroad."

So, it wasn't St. Reagan who took the the U.S.S.R over the economic cliff after all, is that what your implying!!???...it was ten (+) years of war in Afghanistan that caused the U.S.S.R. to implode...? Really..no kidding? but that was Russia..won't happen here, not to the most powerful, greatest, smartest, bestest Nation on earth!! The always right, the invincible United States of America...right?...our "leaders" are so much smarter than those Russian leaders, our leaders wouldn't make such an idiotic decision...would they......?! And besides we need an enemy..lots of politicians, Pentagon, Department of Defence and all the little "private" military contracting companies make a damn good living with the always  "at war" crowd..(pay for it by borrowing money from China and by using the U.S. citizens (the working class peons)  as collateral, and their little low paying, piss-poor "service industry"  jobs hostage (and bombard them with FEAR, scare them into giving up their rights for security...!!!) And when the whole mess causes a huge permanent economic meltdown..blame the citizens..tell them it was all their fault...they shouldn't have spent or borrowed so much, more than they could afford..bad citizens..!

How come, Barney, with your healthy lungpower and biting sarcasm, you haven't been shouting this to the rafters since 2002? Is it suddenly politically useful to you to say it?

The Republicans tried for years to eliminate social programs but failed by legislation.  Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush both knew the way to do it without legislation.  "Deficits don't matter" and "outsourcing was good for America" was a way to break the treasury so these social programs have no funding.  Everyone knew the Democratic Party favoried Health Care reform after Clinton made a try for it.  It was only time before another Democratic controlled government would return, and with it Health care and all the hated social legislation for the average citizen.  So they didn't care about Deficits just confirmed what the Senator is saying.  Bush broke the Treasury making the Democratic control almost impossible, even making them cut their own programs to stay alive and get elected again.  So Bush and the Republicans really did win, and the War of Choice with Iraq indead broke the economy.  The Greed created by supply side policy caused the stock market destroy what was left under George W. Bush's administration.  He had 2 recessions, stock market crash, 2 wars, and the only think that prospered during his 8 years crashed with the housing market.  Total failure. Barney Frank and all Democrats should not let them off easy as their record with supply side policies was a failure.

So the question isn't why there's no money to, among other things, maintain the safety net, rebuild the infrastructure, put people to work and improve public education, instead it's what are we going to do to cut down military spending.  There's an urgency to this, too, what with  perpetual war + global warming + economic collapse = doomsday, and with time running out.   Which means that no way can we turn things around by using the cards that our founding fathers dealt us (since their intent was to confound rather than enable attempts to change the system),  such as letters to the editor or to the President or Congress, signing petitions, attending periodic rallies and even voting.  What does that leave us with?  One thing and one thing only, which is that we rise up en masse and change the world.  Anything less may make one feel like one is doing something meaningful, thereby lifting one's spirits,  perhaps, but accomplishing nothing else.    

"Defense" is a misnomer - "Offense" is a far more apt term.

Frank knows his history which has proven that every country which has an ever increasing military budget will get an ever increasing repressive regime with less and less money to maintain its infrastructure. Once this path is taken, the country crumbles and spirals all the way down. In a few decades America will be no more than a miserable underdeveloped nation where discontent will be put down harshly, ala North Korea with a grand 30m high stature of Glen Beck in every town square.
