Last night I finally watched your Q&A event with congressional Republicans, and I was very impressed.   It is no easy feat to so thoroughly throw back so successfully each question and criticism from a room full of professional haters.   Of course, it becomes much easier when you place your own platform within touching distance of that of your opponents, so that gradually they discover that all they really object to is yourself, by virtue of their own prejudices.   This fact tends to dawn on everyone - debaters and audience, at roughly the same time, and your opponents appear small, petty, and ignorant.

So; it was a politically brilliant showcase for your remarkable intellect and debating skills, not to mention your steady and solid resolve in the face of angry opposition.   You successfully triangulated the field so that they found themselves boxed in, and their fundamental shallowness was exposed.   Their overt humiliation may even open the door for you to actually begin working with them to start fixing things up (apparently your primary goal as president, so congradulations!) but if so you must be honest with yourself:   by this point you'll be working on THEIR house!   Nuclear power, off-shore drilling, spending freeze as remedy to recession...its a little chilling how easilly you cast entire blocks of your natural constituency out into the cold, in order to make things cozier with the Republicans. 

As sucessful as the event clearly was to your personal political career,  by this grand and impressive gesture you have ceded even more ideological ground to the corporatist wrecking crew - or at the very least you have firmly reinforced their perceived possession of that ground.  I guess we'll see where this gets you- and where it gets us; the people who campaigned and voted you into office.

I'd like to see you do something similar with your own party.   You have put a great deal more distance between yourself and Progressives in your party than that which constitutes the intimate proximity you have assumed with many of the angry hypocrites you faced in that room yesterday.   I, for one, would feel a lot better if I was given any indication that you even speak at all with Progressives like Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich, Russ Feingold, let alone in a televised showcase event.   All you've done in their regards for the past year is to ignore them, and even openly ridicule their positions.

Please show some shred of respect to your own base, and propose a similar event with those in your own party who have been pointedly barred from the table.

Thanks, Mark, for reflecting some of the "klieg lights of Obama's brilliant" mind on the Buzzflashers here -- some of us really need to see the light. Two days ago my optimism was beginning to faulter and that light was starting to dim -- but then Obama's rending of the corporate veil of the Supremo Fascist Five started to bring about a change and lifted one of the veils that was settling in over my eyes, closing off the light necessary to see what is really happening. Then Obama lifted another veil yesterday at the Repubican's convention. More than simply reaching out for the impossible dream of bipartisanship, he used the opposing party to expose all the lies they had been perpetuating -- with some success on both the left and the right. Thus the prophet regains some of the honor he has been denied in his own land.

He didn’t take them to the woodshed, he simply treated them like people. Now let us do the same and that alone will solve half of the obstinacy and obstruction Obama has to deal with.
