Subject: A Neck Ready for the Block?

Friends,

Well, here goes:  a political prognostication for the coming election.

Barring any last minute trump cards played by Mr. Rove, and as others have said, Osama Bin Laden in cold storage, ready to be displayed on a plank a day before the vote, I predict a tidal wave of Democratic success on November 7th.

My gut tells me that Mr. Bush's arrogance, disregard for civil liberties, failure in Iraq, and blundering obtuseness has so alienated folks that the "aginners" will be the ones motivated to tramp to the polling stations in huge numbers.  Meanwhile, his core supporters will be so dispirited by the course of events, compounded by the Foley pedophile emails, that they will boycott the election, choosing to go on about their business rather than validate the events of the last two years.  Mr. Bush and Co. will be left with only the most hard core of the hard core, and that ain't very many folk.  And without the strong defense of marriage outpouring as in '04, RePooblican numbers will be down anyway.  It's one thing to answer a polling question when someone calls you on the phone, especially in defense of your beleaguered party.  It is quite another to get up on election day and go through the motions of voting.  The "motive" to vote now seems heavily on the side of those who will vote against the Bush regime.  We could conceivably even see a change in the majority of the Senate.  If you are a Democrat and ready for an Iraq exit, it is too bad Lamont has proved such a poor campaigner.  That race in Connecticut may prove pivotal as regards our Iraq strategy over the next two years.

As a proud political Independent, it was heartening to know that Mr. Bush did not carry our vote majority in '04.  Among us, his numbers have only diminished more.  By an almost two to one margin we now disapprove of his helmsmanship.  These votes will swing Democratic, especially if the Democrat is a moderate/centrist, as are most of us.

Anyway,  here's my neck stuck out.  I would be interested in your opinion.

Best,

John Bomar

Subject: McCarthyism: Cycle, or A New World Order?

Is the United States in another cycle of repression, an era like McCarthyism that would ultimately be self-righting, or are we witnessing a trend that will lead to fascism? This question has implications for the basic nature of life in the US. Howard A. Rodman asks in an LA Times article, (10/22/06) "If Roy Cohn had been allowed to use what we now call 'enhanced interrogation techniques,' do you think he'd have refrained from using them?"

Roy Cohn did not have the Patriot Act, parts I and II. He did not have the Detainee Treatment Act (ironically, sponsored by McCain). Cohn and McCarthy did not have the Military Commissions Act. People still had the right to representation, to habeas corpus, to one phone call. Consider how far McCarthy was able to go, how many lives McCarthy, Cohn and the rest destroyed, without such so-called laws. Then consider what people of their ilk can do now that they have these tools. Are people of the same stripe as McCarthy and Cohn in today's government? Well, yeah, they are named Bush and Gonzales and Warner and McCain (very sorry bit, that last one) and the rest of these neo-con militarist chickenhawks. And, finally, ask if people whose names we would likely never know (unless they get outed by photos from places like Abu Ghraib) who, under the cover of the Detainee Treatment Act, would engage in acts allowed by our New World Order.

Response from the “liberals?” At best, silence, and given their track record, silence actually is the best they seem capable of coming up with. Bill Clinton offers an alternative that would allow court-approved “torture warrants.” Clinton would give the already meaningless system of the FISA court the right to issue torture warrants. This idea was floated earlier by no less an advocate of social justice than Alan M. Dershowitz.

Any legislator who deserves their job should have been working to shut down Congress rather than let such legislation pass. Because, in letting it pass, the basic nature of our system is in fact effectively shut down. We have seen the end of any pretense of freedom and democracy, and no one seems to have noticed.

So, based on this line of thinking, yes, we are in worse shape today than during the McCarthy era or any earlier evil passing itself off as freedom. We are on a downward slope, not a self-righting cycle.

Many people may hold to the line that, so long as you do nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear. But really look at this package of governmental actions in their totality, as a whole, and consider what this means for the well-being of individual people, or of society as a whole. Even people who may never directly experience such acts, who may conform, will find themselves living in an altered reality.

Can people live in a society that has such deep, Soviet style repression without it affecting their daily lives? A society without dissent is not a free society. A society that stifles dissent is a fascist state in which, no matter how perfectly you conform, you must live in fear.

The Mad Moderate
delivered our Lloyd Doggett sign
tonight just before supper.
The old orange cat slipped in
for an autumn nap
as our new friend held the front door
open through a long declaration
of exactly Why he was mad
as hell at the Bush Administration.

Said he’d gone to the Travis County
Republican convention
the year Bush was elected.

If I’d been telling it
I would have said the year of the coup d’état --

Mostly I was trying to keep
three large dogs from slipping
out the front door while
The Mad Moderate
continued to explain to Jay,
who is in a mood to vote against
ALL incumbents, that Doggett
voted against the Patriot Act,
against fast tracking Free Trade,
against restricting Habeas Corpus
and was great on the environment
and women’s issues, really everything
except Iraq, and was better this year
about that.

The Mad Moderate told us
he’d gotten seven letters
to the editor published.

I said, "Let me shake your hand."

I know Lloyd Doggett
mainly from years of work to
protect Barton Springs.

Right after 911 he came home
and held an impromptu town meeting
at a NOW conference right before
I read a an anti-war poem, thinking
then they would do what they have done.

I’ve phone banked for his campaign
every time he’s run for office save
once, when he lost a local race
by 19 votes.

I complain bitterly when he votes
to fund the war.

He told me I was in the minority,
that he agreed with me,
but had to represent the district.

That's what he used to say.
Lots of us are mad at him about
voting to fund Iraq.

Recently he's backed the Murtha plan,
who looks like my grandfather,
and says we should negotiate with
all stakeholder governments in the
Middle East and re-deploy troops.

When Tom DeLay led the re-districting
fiasco that turned Lloyd’s district into
a fajita strip going from north
of Austin to the border splitting the city
and cutting us out of his district I made sure
hundreds of people cast the vote for him
I lost, supported all the Killer-Ds, still do.

I helped write the State Democratic
Platform, and it's a good document,
not that anyone pays much attention
to platforms.

I like Lloyd Doggett.
His father was a dentist about whom people
say when you call them, "He was a good man."
His wife's fluent Spanish helped hold the new
district together.

The Mad Moderate
is delivering and installing Democrat
yard signs in our left wing neighborhood.

This guy, who helped Bush get
elected in 2000, is arguing with my
husband who’s mad at everyone
in the Congress, even Lloyd.

But now Jay's going to vote for
Doggett, the dogs didn’t
get out and our front yard looks
like Democrat central, all of which
occurred just as I was serving supper,
because I’d called a friend and
asked for a John Courage yard sign
thinking we were still in his district.

But we got un-gerrymandered
and given back to Lloyd,
so Jay has to vote for one
incumbent after all.

Dear Tucker,

As a rule I generally agree with you. However, when I heard you say that commercial being run against that Harold Ford guy in Tennessee was not about race, that was the most asinine thing I have ever heard! I was born and raised in the South and can assure you that "call me" from the blond was aimed straight at the Billy bob baba's who see red when they think about a black man with a white woman! I also assure you the South does not have a shortage of such jerks! My sister is married to one. Instead of a sheet, he wears a suit and tie, but to meet him you would think he was one of the nicest guys in the world you know. A GOOD OLE BOY ... til' you know what he says in private.

Subject: The Ultimate Organized Crime Syndicate

Forget the Mafia, the Chinese Triads or Russian Mob. We have elevated the names of Bugsy Siegel, Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Vito Genovese, etc. to folklore status for their savagery, organizational power, influence and image. Books and movies about organized crime is an industry unto itself. But no outfit has ever risen to the levels of Republicans in Washington. Not that the Democrats are squeaky clean, they're not. But pound for pound nobody can touch a Republican for pathological lying, robbing the government (the taxpayer) blind with sweetheart defense and rebuilding no-bid contracts, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people for profit by staging a phony war and rigging elections nationwide to keep themselves in power. It is much easier to deal with Washington as the most successful organized crime outfit ever. Unlimited power, access, and resources at their fingertips makes them put Vito Corleone to shame.

Not even the Godfather had the power to start a war, at least not directly. What's more, even the Mafia in its heyday pretty much left the "unconnected" people alone. Except for higher costs for merchandise controlled by Mafia families, the average person didn't have to worry about getting whacked. Not so with Bush. A draft would amount to the same thing. So pervasive is the Republican Party that they have more or less dominated all televised and radio news media, organized religion and Wall Street. What more do they need? Kickbacks, sex perversion, war for profit, genocide, etc. Isn't it all racketeering? Too bad we can't use RICO against the Washington cartel. It's probably compromised, too. Aspiring Dons and crime family leaders need look no further than FOX news for the best on-the-job training money can buy.

Here are two stories from the University of California, where stem cell research is being conducted right now. Californians voted for it in the last election. It would be nice to get the Federal government behind it, simply because the funds would increase tremendously and the resulting quantity of researchers would bring results to fruition much faster, but it isn’t vital for the survival of the research.

Subject: Service Academy Graduates Unite Against Illegal Iraq War - Join Anti-War West Pointers in New Organization

The overwhelming response by alumni of United States service academies to the anti-war efforts of West Point Graduates Against the War (http://www.westpointgradsagainstthewar.org) has resulted in a combined arms organization of former and current land, sea, and air officers united against the war in Iraq. The new organization, Service Academy Graduates Against the War (http://www.sagaw.org), was established by three West Pointers, William Cross, James Ryan, and Joseph Wojcik, all 1962 USMA graduates and cofounders of the former organization. They were joined in the new endeavor by Dud Hendrick, a 1963 United States Naval Academy graduate and Terry Symens-Bucher, an alumnus of the United States Air Force Academy, class of 1975.

The new grassroots organization calls on graduates of all service academies to speak out against the destruction of the honor of the United States and the dissipation of its military caused by the deceitful policies of the present administration. It also calls for the impeachment of the president of the United States for high crimes and misdemeanors. The founding alumni and their fellow service academy graduate members, instilled with the service academy codes of honor, believe a fundamental respect for truth is a basic and lifelong attribute of character. To that end, they have united to speak out against the deceitful behavior of the government of the United States and its widely known malefactors. At issue is the lying, cheating, stealing, delivering evasive statements and quibbling, which has put vast numbers of innocent people in deadly peril and disgracefully diminished the integrity of the United States. “660,000 people slaughtered,” said James Ryan, “and still no one in the US government is held accountable for this crime against humanity.” The new web site painstakingly documents the illegality of the assault on Iraq, and documents the lies and subterfuge perpetrated by the president of the United States and his subordinates.

“All service academy grads should be concerned about the illegality of orders premised on the lies of the president,” said Dud Hendrick, US Naval Academy graduate. “We also serve to protect our fighting men and women from being subject to illegal and immoral orders.”

Membership in Service Academy Graduates Against the War is open to all alumni of United States service academies, as well as widows, widowers, parents, children, and grandchildren of deceased graduates. Non-graduates may enroll as “Honor Guard” supporters.

I am getting that funky feeling again like I got after all three previous elections when we worked our combined asses off....and THEY would still win. I hate it. They have been calling me to help out every day at McCaskill headquarters...and I cannot bring myself to talk to people about it. My own family allow their 10 yr.old to ask me why I have that sign on my front yard, and they say nothing. I have lost all respect for them...I love them dearly...but, it is just like, "You are okay when you agree with them...but, if you do not, just shut up!" I am taking food to the workers on Friday...and hope to be able to tell them how I feel.

Every single democrat running against an incumbent is only a few points ahead or behind and we all know that they have the machines they want to be able to fix an election. Tell me I am wrong! I am sad...but, am I wrong?? The ridiculous things said about the commercial Michael J.Fox has done is driving me nuts...and now...during the World Series game tonight...Suppan is going to do an anti-stem cell research ad?? Huh??

Paul Harris had a call-in show on my way home...and 75% of the people calling in agreed with him being able to do that! Okay.. some of them think Suppan should be able to walk on the moon...but, many were just thinking the same way as he is! We all have to understand, most of the people who voted for Bush and the Iraq war, will never admit they were wrong...Even people who are very democratic...and running for office. Even Claire McCaskill says there should be a gradual draw down....no...sorry...we should get the hell out of Iraq...we invaded...and we are not winning one damn thing. Everything that Michael Moore said....is right!

Subject: A Poem About Voting the Bums Out of Office

I am a professional poet. I publish my poetry on a web site http://www.JustPlainPoetry.com. Lately, the most popular poem as voted by viewers of the web site is “Vote Them Out.” Please post this on your site so others can enjoy it as well.

Vote Them Out

Bush and Cheney and Rove and Rice
Act insanely
We pay the price.

Hatch and McCain, Frist and the rest
Inflicting pain
They think they’re blessed.

Rich and filthy and way right-wing
Willy-nilly
They think they’re king.

They start a war, they scratch their itch
They tax the poor
They feed the rich.

They’re neo-cons, religious right
They kill our sons,
Make torture trite.

They like Enron and corporate greed
All hope is gone
They pay no heed.

They ruin all, increase the debt
They make us fall:
No safety net.

They tap our phones they torture men
We’re skin and bones
Because of them.

They own resorts they have the gold
They own the courts
And votes are sold.

They think that Christ will come real soon
And save they’re hides
While we’re all doomed.

But when did Christ get violent?
Not even twice
Was he so bent.

He drove them out of his temple
He didn’t shout
It’s quite simple:

A needle’s eye is way too small
For Bush and tribe
To find at all.

The pearly gate will stop them cold
But that’s too late
Or so I’m told.

We have the vote, we have the way
To end their gloat
To make them pay.

Just vote them out and end their sleaze
And then boycott
Their companies.

Subject: A few thoughts

Do all repubs believe they possess the ability to diagnose ailments without even being in the same state as the patient, let alone the same room? Remember Frist's long-distance assessment of Terri Schiavo? Now, limbutt--whose medical expertise is limited to drug abuse--has made an absolute, positive diagnosis of Michael J. Fox.

After Keith Olbermann played the tape showing limbutt's flailing antics as he delivered his tirade, several thoughts crossed my mind:

1. Fox takes medication due to his illness--medication did not cause his ailment, 2. limbutt lost his hearing due to his abuse of Oxycontin and, 3. Finally, although I am loath to make long-distance assessments, has limbutt looked into the use of a 'man-ssiere'? Having to hear him is one thing, having to watch the man-boobs (or is it 'that man boob'?) flop around was more than one could take!

How do we explain that to the children?

Subject: Republicans -- Party of Values or Party of Hypocrisy?

The Republican ad against Congressman Harold Ford currently running is Pornographic in nature, airing for all the world to see, especially children.... And, then you have the Republican's main spokesman, Rush Limbaugh, making fun of Michael Fox, a person genuinely suffering from Parkinson's disease... And yet, this is the group which ironically spouts they are the party of ethics and morality..... How about the party of hypocrisy -- and a party who gives out the message it is ok to show porn and make fun of people, and to stoop to any length, as long as it serves their own end to stay in power!

Subject: Michael J. Fox Ad

Rush Limbaugh is no expert on Parkinson’s disease and I will be the first to admit I am not either. But my judgment is just as valid as his judgment of Michael J. Fox’s appearance in the commercial just released in Missouri. And my experience seems to be far greater than his when it comes to that disease because I have a very dear aunt who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over four years ago.

I spend a lot of time with her and I have watched her deteriorate from a bright, athletic woman; who spent most of her time fishing, hiking, working in her garden and taking long walks during spring, summer, fall and even winter; into one who can barely walk.

During those four years I have spent with her while Parkinson’s took control of her body, I learned to recognize her “good” days and her “bad” days. Some days, rising from her chair was easy, some days she needed help. There were doctor’s visits, medication adjustments and the slow downhill slide to canes and lift chairs. She still has her “good” days and her “bad” days even on her medication. But these days it’s measured by the help she needs in getting up, whether or not she can cross the room with her cane or needs an arm to assist her.

Like Mr. Fox, some days her tremors are slight and she can feed herself, sometimes they are so hard to control that she can not. This lovely lady, so full of laughter and fun, doesn’t go out much anymore. She depends on family and friends who are constantly vigilant. She won’t be speaking for her fellow sufferers of this insidious disease that robs you of mobility.

But Michael J. Fox, a fellow sufferer, has the desire and the opportunity to speak for her and all those who can benefit from stem cell research, and he did. We thank him for making that ad that must have been so difficult for him to do; for allowing himself to become Mr. Limbaugh’s punching bag.

I may not be an expert, but I know this. It’s not “an act,” Mr. Limbaugh, I’ve watched while it happened to someone I love.

Subject: GOP Nervous?

Sure the GOP is nervous. They are not nervous about losing the elections; they are nervous about what the people might do when the GOP fix makes them victorious. The moment of truth has arrived. Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus have been revoked and Kellogg Brown and Root have built almost 100 new detention facilities across the USSA.

I fear that these goons have nothing to worry about, and I desperately hope that my thinking is wrong. But these mega-criminals in our government have much to fear, should they lose their power. And, as we have already seen, the Republicans will stop at nothing to save their own miserable, disloyal hides, oath-breaking hides. ...

Subject: Love Letter to Democrats

Dear Democrats,

I think you need a little pepping up.

Remember Harry Truman, remember FDR, and remember your roots -- but most of all, honor your conscience.  You have nothing to be ashamed of! You are fighting the good fight, honoring our constitutional republic, and millions of disadvantaged Americans are still depending on you.

Because if you don't keep alive the American dream for the middle and lower classes, who will?  If you don't protect our spacious skies and purple mountain majesties from corporate rape, who will?  If you don't put your caring arms around our children and aging citizens, who will?  And if you don't act like grownups and honor and benefit from the magnificent adventure of science, who will?

We've heard a lot of talk about morality these days, which is great, since that's always been the very soul of the Democratic Party.  Sure, you've had your lapses, your fallings from grace, but you always land on your ethical feet when it comes to helping the poor in spirit and "have nots" of our country.  The late night cynics may laugh at the "have and have not" distinction, but everyone knows it's still true.  And so you continue to take your cue from Jesus when it comes to not robbing the poor and exalting the rich.

And please don't forget that someone has to be a voice in this wilderness of spinning (which used to be called lying).  Who else is going to be that still, small voice of the American conscience?  Certainly not these righteous Pharisees who hate all the other world's religions more than they honor their own spiritual origins.  Whatever happened to gentle Jesus, the exquisitely civilized gardens of Islam, or the Hebrew Prophets (those beacons of justice).  Someone has to keep reminding us of Jesus' "Ye shall judge them by their fruits," or we are morally doomed.  And that someone is you.  The alternative is 3rd millennia holy wars. The alternative is mass murder in the name of God.  The alternative is the metastasized cancer of the Middle East .

And surely our founding fathers must have their arms around your shoulders for how stubbornly you honor their constitutional legacy.  They well knew their descendants would be threatened less by enemies abroad, than divisive, fanatical cults and greed vampires from within.  The rule of law always disintegrates in times of "might makes right" and "the end justifies the means," and this certainly isn't the first time fragile civilization has been threatened by these arrogant rationalizations.  So, bless you for working to keep our Ship of State in the deep waters of constitution and law and away from the rocks and shallows of self-serving extremists. Beyond the righteous cults of the day, we are each of us Americans after all.

And then there's Mother Nature. Our descendants will be forever grateful to your passionate and untiring efforts to protect her.  And yes, there's heartbreak in this, too, since there are those among us for whom the pastel hills, night wind prairies, breathing oceans, crystal skies, Holy Grail forests, and salty morning beaches are "movie sets," merely, for their salvation/damnation sitcoms.  No mystery here, no Walden Pond, no God given Eden, no Amerindian Great Spirit ... just a temporary motel (so why not steal the towels?).  Who cares about global warming or greed driven environmental rape if we're all going to go up in a puff of Armageddon smoke anyway?  Of course, the real adults still have to mind the store of one and only planet and for this duty, Democrats have always volunteered.

And lastly, dear Democrats, kudos to you for playing by the rules.  Life has a funny way of catching out the liars and cheaters, whether it's a high school sports competition or a presidential election, so keep the faith that truth will out!

So come November, vote your hearts, vote your conscience.  This is it, dear dems.  This is the big one.  Forget the rationalizations, forget the appointments, forget the bar.  Each of us is the other guy and if you and I don't vote, then all is lost.

And Tiny Time had it right.  God bless us all every one.

Subject: A Republican Congress Constitutes a Major Threat to Our Governing System

The Bush Administration, in its onslaught against our American system of government, has succeeded largely because of the support of the lock-step members of congress, the house and senate. Any given member of of congress has supported Bush, as indicated by his or her voting record, more than 90 percent of the time. Indeed, the White House has had an almost complete party-line vote on all the mischief and misdeeds it is responsible for, in a program of adversity that places the nation at its greatest risk of collapse since the Civil War. Each Republican member of the legislature has mindlessly voted for Bush's disjointed and adverse dealings, which have left us with a loss of our rational progressive government -- from its rigid Iraq war policy and its spend-and-borrow financing, its unfair tax cuts for the wealthy creating an impossible national debt for both war and peace time, the breakdown of our checks-and-balances in our system of government from the sewn-up Supreme Court choices in the Bush grab for absolute power, and the falsifying and politicizing of terrorist threats creating a voting atmosphere for usurping votes through the fear factor, the diminution of science such as in eliminating stem-cell research or the denial of global warming evidence, to the stacking of Supreme Court justices so there is no dissent throughout the three branches of government in Bush's grab for power.

A vote for a Republican can, thus, do no less than continue the thrust toward the trashing of the Constitution, and the creation of a monster out of a system of government of which we were once so proud.

Subject: Today's LA Times - "Bush Insits He'll Stand By His Iraq Goals"

Stand by them? Why he's already achieved them, what with his corporate oil buddies about to take over Iraq's oil reserves, maybe the largest in the world. He wouldn't dare tell us the truth, "Sorry about the twenty-eight hundred of your best and brightest who've been slaughtered in Iraq, but what the heck, Iraq's oil is ours." Too bad he can't own up to this, because even one example of truth-telling on his part might be taken by the International Court of Criminal Justice (where, following his impeachment, he'll go on trial for his crimes against humanty) as a sign that, indeed, he may be human. Which might help him when it gets down to sentencing time after he's convicted there, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

At This Point, the Only Way the Republicans Can Maintain Control of the House is to Steal the Vote in Key Races

That's why Bush and Rove are confident. A pox on their house!!!

That Sick Feeling

I know how Shirley/St. Louis feels. I have the same sick feeling that the republicans have already fixed the election coast to coast. Sure they'll let a few token Democrats slide though to make it all look legitimate.

In Ohio news this evening, the story was that absentee voting in OH is at the highest level ever. The scoop is... none of the absentee ballots can be counted until election day, causing results to be delayed until the day after the election. There are two sheets of paper comprising the OH absentee ballot. Lawyers are trying circumvent the situation by copying every absentee ballot and feeding the copy through the electronic scanner before election day. Hmmm, guess who said absentee ballots could not be pre-counted? Our good friend, Kenneth Blackwell!!! When contacted, Blackwell said there was nothing he could do about it. In other words... anything I can do to discourage an effecient election, I will.

This is also the first time all of OH will be using computerized voting. With poll workers poorly trained and Diebold electronic breakdowns, surely, many will tire of waiting in line and choose to go home without voting. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED KENNETH!

I toast with you.... my cup of Pepto Bismol is raised high.

How To Prevent The Republicans from Stealing The 11/7 Election

We come as close as we can to taking every House and every Senate seat. That way, with or without electronic cheating on the part of the Republicans, it'll be the equivalent of our winning by acclamation, after which we can get on with changing the world.
