Dave Lindorff: The Democrats, Really, You Just Gotta Laugh

The Democrats in Congress, and their main man Barack Obama in the White House, have taken tens of millions in legal bribes from the health insurance industry over the past year, and have obligingly been hammering out in Congress a health "reform" bill that, instead of helping people, has been designed to help the insurance industry.

They started out by immediately blackballing any discussion of real health reform in the form of an expansion of Medicare to cover everyone of every age, which of course would have ended the problem of the uninsured, while cutting the nation's overall health bill by at least a third, but in the process shutting down the private health insurance business.

Then they chipped away and are at this point on the verge of eliminating any so-called "public option" or government-run health insurance plan to even compete with the private insurance sector.

Finally, in a move as breathtakingly accommodating of the insurance industry as was the multi-trillion-dollar bailout financial bailout of Wall Street's biggest banks, they proposed to require (on pain of a $3,800 fine by the IRS) to require everyone in America to buy a health insurance plan from the private sector -- a gift to the industry of some 40-50 million new unwilling customers.

But a combination of public outrage at this compulsory program of insurance and recognition that the inevitable government subsidy of low-income insurance buyers would be humongous has led Congress to backtrack, and start backing away from the mandatory aspect of this plan.

And now the private insurance industry, not satisfied that it has managed to practically dictate the terms of the health reform legislation so far, and angry that it might not get those 40-50 million new forced customers, is reportedly threatening to turn around and knife the president and the Democratic Congress in the back.

They're threatening to (gasp!) start running attack ads on the "reform" legislation.

Remember the old "Harry and Louise" ads the industry ran attacking Hillary and Bill Clinton's health reform proposal back in the early 1990s? Well, this time, it'll be Harry and Louise attacking Obamacare.

I can see it now. America's Health Insurance Plans, the lobby for the insurance industry vultures, will set up some nice-sounding front group with a name such as People for a Healthier America, and they'll fund a new ad campaign such as this:

Harry will be sitting at the breakfast table, reading the local paper. He'll look up from his coffee as Louise is puttering around by the sink.

"This ObamaCare looks like it's gonna drive up our insurance premiums, hon."

"What do you mean, Harry?"

"Well it says here that they're not going to force the poor folks to buy insurance, so most of 'em will probably wait until they get sick and then buy it."

"Well what's wrong with that, dear?"

"Nothin' 'cept that the law would also prohibit the insurance companies from charging those sick folks higher premiums when they do finally come in to buy insurance."

"Well, wouldn't it be unfair to charge them more, when they need it?"

"It might seem that way Louise, but if the insurance company has to take a loss on them, they're going to make it up by charging us good folks who have insurance more."

"Oh my god, Harry! We're already paying $6,000 a year for our insurance. What will our premiums go up to?

"Says here they could go up by another $1,000 a year!"

Announcer: Don't let Congress make you pay for the uninsured. Call your Senators and Representatives and the White House, and tell them to demand that every American be required to buy insurance immediately! This announcement is brought to you by People for a Healthier America.

It's funny really, to see Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), the biggest recipient in Congress of insurance industry money, who has spent the last few months working hand-in-glove with the insurance industry lobbyists to craft a bill to their liking, suddenly accusing his erstwhile financiers of doing a "hatchet job" on his bill. Actually, his bill has been a hatchet job itself on the whole concept of health care reform.

All of this, of course, was entirely predictable. Like HillaryCare before it, ObamaCare has been doomed from the start by its unwillingness to address the basic issue behind America's twin crisis of health care: lack of access for those with lower incomes, and absurdly high cost for everyone.

What makes it all so pathetic is that America already has an excellent model for delivering quality health care: a single-payer system called Medicare. Everyone in America gets this program, just like in Canada, Germany, France, Taiwan, Japan, and elsewhere. The only difference is that in those other countries, people get it from the day they're born. In America, you have to wait until you are permanently disabled, or until you reach the age of 65.

Far from having to "start from scratch," as Obama claimed in his last address to Congress in explaining why he was not proposing a single-payer solution despite its obvious success in other countries, solving America's health crisis by adopting a single-payer system would be a simply matter of taking a system that works, and expanding it to cover everybody.

But of course that would have made the insurance industry furious. They'd have to go back to just selling life insurance and homeowners insurance and car insurance.

And so we can expect a new round of "Harry and Louise," and ObamaCare will go down in flames.

You have to laugh at these Democrats. Even when they brazenly try to sell out, they get screwed.

Laugh? I thought I'd Die!

I did die.
They covered me deep - six feet.
They planted Rafflesia arnoldii at my feet
The roots grew deep and tickled my feet
Laugh? I thought I'd Die! (repeats until death)

If only the "hunorous" Democrats were so funny.

The "mandate" is in, the

The "mandate" is in, the "mandate" is a done deal, charge the dirty filthy sleazy deadbeats $3800 a day for all the get-tough public cares.  The only question is whether the "mandate" will include an Option. The only question is whether the "mandate" will include an Option.  The IRS will now become the collecation agency for the Insurance CEOs.  Democrats - Zero Support in 2010 - Joe Wilson for Judiciary in 2010 - Down with the Bi-Partisan Party - ALL WE ASK in 2009 is an Option with our mandate, and everythings cool.  But this Bi-Partisan Crap will get you minority status in 2010, Down with the Bi-Partisan Party.

Fake elections

Did you REALLY think voting Dem in another fake election was going to change something?  Man, you people are wet.

If we get the "mandate" and

If we get the "mandate" and no Option, then Americans will get to find out first-hand what if any difference Democrats not being in the majority, makes - because they will be the minority in 2010, and I hope nobody in America votes for ANY Democrat in 2010 if that happens.

Please stop with the stupidity!

There is a difference between Blue Dog DINO-Fascists and REAL Democrats.

We must vote out the DINOs in next year's upcoming  Democratic primaries.

But even a Blue Dog in office would be preferable to any Republican, as the last eight years of hell have proven.

If we get the "mandate" and

If we get the "mandate" and no Option, as a result of Democrats being in the majority, then I hope to talk you out of voting for, contributing to, or encouranging anyone else to vote for, ANY Democrat in 2010.  2012 is different - PNAC - stakes are too high - John McCain signed the PNAC - but 2010 forget it.

You don't make any sense!

None of the Republicans will vote for it. But you would have America vote against all Democrats who do vote for it simply because the DINOs don't vote for it.

So the only sense you make is nonsense!

Tell me about how the Public

Tell me about how the Public Option is still alive then, don't tell me I have to support Betrayers!!!  I voted lesser of two evils my whole life, this is too da-- much.  F--- the F---iong Bi-Partisan piece of S--- sellout Democrat majority, go ahead and still vote for them if I can't talk you out of it, I will waste my vote while sending a message, by voting for the Socialist Workers Party.  I am one of the people who is going to be paying the $3800!!!  So don't tell me who I have to support.

But it was you who told us who to support. Remember?

You have proven yourself to be quite unhinged, again.

A vote for the Socialist Workers Party candidate is a vote for the Republican candidate.

A vote for a Democrat, who is neither a DINO nor a 'Betrayer' as you put it, is a vote for a Democrat... a REAL Democrat.

If the Public Option is

If the Public Option is alive, as you said, then the Democrats will get alot of support in 2010.

Not all were fake

We voted out the Republican Neocon-Fascists over the past two election cycles.

Now it's time to vote out the Blue Dog DINO-Fascists too, who are committing treason against their constituants!

But first we have to get rid of touch screen voting machines and bring back paper ballots and hand counting in front of an audience of observers. Otherwise, the elections really will be fake!

2010 will be a rout for

2010 will be a rout for Republicans, good Democrats will be outta there, bad Democrats will be outta there.  They weren't planning on ever using their majority other than for Bi-Partisan F--ing Bulls---, anyway.

Says who? Where is your proof?

Please do not try to post your stupid, biased opinions as facts.

On a national, state and district level, Democrats are much more popular than Republicans.

People have not forgotten the eight long Dubya/dick nightmare.

No, ... where's YOUR proof?

After the euphoria over Obama's election wore off, the generic party numbers are once again

neck-and neck

Cheerleading is nice, .....

..... but it's better to deal with reality.

Are you blind? Your graph supports my position, not yours!

The claim was the Democrats would get routed, but I don't see that in the numbers you presented. They prove the Democrats will hold on to their majority!

Seriously?

I was responding to your claim, which was, "On a national, state and district level, Democrats are much more popular than Republicans."  The latest Gallup poll (confirmed by several recent polls) shows a statistically insignificant (within the margin of error) lead of 2 percent, as compared to the 15 percent lead held immediately prior to the 2008 election.

I thought the graph would make it easier, but apparently not.  Try reading the article, or at least the headline ("Parties nearly Tied For Congress in 2010").  It discusses how the Democratic lead in party strength has declined from 15% last year to a virtual tie now.

Maybe that'll help.

Genereic polls are biased against incumbants and majority party

Once you put a name in front of that (D) and (R), everything changes. That's why I said the Democrats will win. For the Republicans to win, that generic poll would have to show the Republicans out ahead by at least 5-10 points.

What you, as well as the Republicans forget, is that the dissatisfaction for the Democrats in office will not translate into more votes for the Republicans.

Remember, last year before Election Day, most people were dissatisfied with Congress, yet the Democrats routed the Republicans, again!

As I stated earlier, what will happen next year if meaningful legislation is not passed this year, is a big turn out at the Democratic primaries to replace the DINOs who are the root cause of their decline in popularity.

Next year, the Progressives will own the Democratic primaries, no matter how hard Rahm tries to sabatoge them with stupid pajama smears!

??? Says WHO?

What makes you say generic polls are biased against incumbents and the majority party?  Do you have some evidence of this, or is it just the Hopium talking?

BTW - What on earth would cause you to make the claim that "progressives will own the Democratic primaries" and replace the "DINO"s?

That's pretty funny, ....

.... considering people said the same thing about Obama.

Dave Lindorff, has opposed

Dave Lindorff, has opposed the Public Option, alot of the others up here have never supported the Public Option.  To them, whatever the story is, the conclusion is Obama=McCain.  Many Public Option detractors up here on the Buzzflash forums, for whom the perfect is the enemy of the good, have spouted LIES about the Public Option, calling it a Dumping Ground.  The Public Option ISNT a dumping ground.  Lots of Americans, myself first and foremost, are going to choose the Public Option because it's MORE RELIABLE than the Insurance CEOs and will HOPEFULLY be the wedge that eventually opens the door to putting them all out of business.

Lies? Sort of like ....

... when you claimed Hillary's plan consisted solely of a mandate and nothing else (i.e. no public plan, tax incentives or subsidies, etc.)?

Funny how there's so much misinformation out there.

Whores and pimps

We don't expect whores to be purer than their pimps.  Why expect corporate owned Dems to be purer than the corporations that own them?

No MEANINGFUL Reform Was EVER Gonna Pass...

It was NEVER gonna happen. Too many carts that would have had to have been overturned. Too much money on the side of status quo.

Obama just wants some--any-piece-of-shit bill he can sign and, with the assistance of the spinners and shills, proclaim it the best thing since sliced-fucking-bread.

I do not know to what kinds of delusion it was necessary for someone to be subject to have EVER believed Barack Obama, a bourgeois, half-breed, geekie kid with an absent father would turn against the interests of the people who raised him to this pinnacle--and I don't mean the 'voters"; I mean the Owners and the Oiligarchs, and the Aristos at whose whim he is not ensconced in the WhiteHouse, and in whose company he is at last allowed to play his minor part...

"Was ever"? You talk like defeatist PM Carpenter!

Did I miss something? When did they pass a bill?

Oh, that's right. They haven't! So don't give up!

Not only is a credible Public Option still alive, so too is Single Payer!

The key is the House. If they pass a bill with Single Payer, regardless of what the Senate does, the compromise bill will contain Single Payer.

All the Senate really needs to pass a bill is 50 votes and Biden to break the tie.

Howard Dean and Democracy for America are still flying under the radar, but I expect them to make some very big moves in the very near future that will turn the tides on the Red/Blue Neocons.

And it looks like we don't have to wait long because the insurance industry may have cut their own throats with their latest "let them eat higher premiums" bogus report.

Will this be the final straw that will cause Americans to wake up and demand the end of private insurance companys and their claim denying death panels?

Single payer is still alive?!?!?

Is it in hiding .....

..... with Elvis?

Of course it is!

The majority of voters as well as doctors still want it. Plus it has proven to be the least costly program all around. Besides, it already exists as the wildly popular Medicare for seniors.

The only problem is the corrupt insurers would be put out of business, and they continue to bribe key Democrats to prevent it from happening.

All the really has to happen to assure 'Medicare for all', is for a well organized grass roots effort to amp up the fear in DINOs of losing next year's elections in Democratic primaries.

Progressives already proved a point to the DINOs earlier this year by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in one day and then donating it all to truly Democratic incumbents.

Now the talk of challenging DINOs in Democratic primaries is getting louder by the day.

Rahmbo can't do a thing about it either, even if he doesn't wear pajamas!

Wow, .... Is that "All that really has to happen"?

I think single payer is clearly the best alternative, but it's not even being considered, by Obama, the House or the Senate.

Ease up on the Hopium, Kev, ....

..... you can overdose on that stuff.

Ease up on the mud slinging

You're getting it all over yourself, but none on me!

"Mud slinging"?

Just a little dose of reality.

That's why you're so confused....

Care to place a little bet as to whether single-payer even gets a vote?

Now you are also a liar

You claimed I was on drugs simply because my opinion does not mesh with your opinion. That is an uncivil, illogical ad hominem attack, which is indeed mudslinging.

Please spare yourself any further embarassment, and stop wasting my time.

"Hopium" is a drug?

It's a metaphor, Kevvy, not intended to be taken literally.  I think you could even walk into your local police station, ask them for some "Hopium" (make sure to emphasize the "H"), and you'd be just fine.

Geezus, Kevvy, .... how old are you?

Pelosi pledges again House will pass health care bill with P.O.

From

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As the Senate Finance Committee passed its health care bill out of committee without a public option Tuesday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood on the other side of the Capitol insisting again that the House will pass a bill with a government-run insurance option.

"I am for the public option. That will be the House position, and that will be the position we will go to the conference to fight for," Pelosi said.

Pointing to a CBS poll from last week that found 62 percent of Americans favor a public option, Pelosi argued "the public is way ahead of elected officials in this."

The Speaker said she's aiming to pass a bill by Thanksgiving, but acknowledged others are projecting Christmas, and concluded a bill would pass "certainly this year."

Uhhhhhhm ......

.... a weak, "public option" is not single-payer, Kevvy.

Not even close.
