Dave Lindorff: On Torture and War, Obama Sounds Increasingly, and Disturbingly, Like Bush

In reversing himself and declaring that the U.S. government will not release further photos in its possession of torture being practiced on captives held by the U.S. military and the CIA, President Obama is sounding increasingly like the Bush/Cheney administration before him.

It may well be that, as Obama says, release of those photos could lead to anger in the Islamic world and perhaps to recruitment gains among groups such as Al Qaeda that are attacking American troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, but this is only true because at the same time, the Obama Administration is opposing the taking of any legal action against the people who authorized and promoted that torture.

If the Obama Administration were to open a full-scale legal investigation into torture, with an independent prosecutor assigned to go after anyone who violated the Geneva Conventions and the U.S. Criminal Code outlawing torture and the authorization, condoning, or covering-up of torture, quite the opposite would happen: people in the Islamic world would see that this nation was coming to terms with those who abused the law.

As things stand, we have a only few people at the very bottom of the chain of command who are doing jail time or suffering administrative punishments for committing acts of torture and abuse that they believed had been ordered and authorized by leaders in the military, the Secretary of Defense's office, and the White House, but not one of those in authority who set the torture of captives in motion has been called to justice. Obama has endorsed that situation by again referring to the torture as just the actions of "a few people."

It was hardly that, however, and he knows it. Torture was a major part of the Bush/Cheney so-called "War" on Terror, and was being conducted on an industrial scale, with White House lawyers providing legal cover, the Secretary of Defense sending memos urging every more aggressive techniques, and government doctors and psychologists working assiduously to make them more "effective."

The illogic of Obama's position on these photos is stunning. Since we know the photos exist, the refusal to make them public can only feed a sense that they must be worse than the horrific photos of torture at Abu Ghraib Prison, which were already released. Nobody is going to assume that the photos in the White House's possession are less offensive than what has already been discovered and made public -- for why would the administration be worried about that?

The truth is always better than a cover-up, and what we now have the president advocating is a cover-up of American torture.

But that's only part of the president's slide into Cheneyism. We have the president now calling for the possible indefinite detention of terror suspects -- an idea that only insures that there will always be an incentive for recruiting more terrorists (to avenge those in captivity) -- and that makes a joke of our own Constitution, which guarantees everyone -- not just citizens -- the right to a trial, the right to a presumption of innocence, and protection from "cruel and unusual punishment," which indefinite detention certainly is.

The war in Afghanistan, which now must be called Obama's War, thanks to his policy of escalation, is also becoming Cheneyesque, with the firing of Gen. David McKiernan, and his replacement as head of the Afghanistan War by Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Gen. McChrystal hails from the Special Forces, and played a role in the torture that was integral to the U.S. war and occupation in Iraq. Far from being put in charge of operations in Afghanistan, where public backing for the U.S. military is virtually non-existent at this point, McChrystal should be facing investigation and possible prosecution here at home for his role in torture of captives.

It has never made sense to initiate a war in Afghanistan in order to go after a band of criminal terrorists hiding out in the mountains. Bush and Cheney turned what should have been a focused hunt for Al Qaeda terrorists into a war on the Taliban government and ultimately the people of Afghanistan. Obama has continued that error, and now blithely hyphenates the terms Al Qaeda and Taliban in defining the "enemy" of American forces in that country.

Such a war can never be won, and can only lead to tragedy, not just for the people of Afghanistan, for whom it is already that, but for American troops and ultimately for America itself.

It is a war that never should have been fought, and which now should be ended as rapidly as possible.

Obama at this point, by covering up for official torture, and by signing on to and expanding the war in Afghanistan, is dooming his presidency, further staining the reputation of the United States, and ultimately furthering the decline of the country that was set in motion by his predecessors.

IF...

Obama wants to reinstate America as a world leader, he HAS to show COURAGE and do what he promised to do if he were to be president. Where is his courage now? As a European, I am deeply disappointed. We have just accepted a released prisoner of Gitmo. Released after SEVEN years of all sort of torture for what? Not guilty whatsoever, and this government would have us believe that in keeping Gtimo, not making public other pics, etc...would help Americans? In what way? Certainly not regaining their honor.

Can We End The Duopoly Yet?

The two-party racket, which is destroying this nation, needs to be ended before there is nothing left of this nation to save. The excuse "Destroyed it to save it" has never worked since it was first used in Vietnam.

Of what use is being saved when the quality of your freedom is severely compromised? The FBI and/or NSA are reading every word we type over the Internet, and hear every word we speak on our cell phones as they search for terrorists. We can't be sure that our mail isn't scanned, our cable TV choices recorded, or our financial transactions scrutinized - all in the name of "protecting" us from attack. Call that free? I don't!

We may have to risk having some bad governments for a while, but other political candidate options need to be selected over the two-party corporate gangsters. It's the only way our traditional liberty can be maintained.

Obama misunderstands

Obama needs to know that his most important constituency The Aggressive Progressives doesn't want him to try to out finesse the nonnegotiable Movement Conservatives and the Democrat Blue dogs, what he needs to know is that the American public has his back and is ready to fight! WTF! Obama has all the power cards and is throwing in his hand. He has the Whitehouse, a filibuster proof Senate, a majority House that's itching to ditch Pelosi and clean up Bush's mess as well as First Sergeant Emmanuel Rhambo at the ready along with VP Fighting Joe Biden. It's time to rumble and kick ass. There is no more time for 'Dancing with the Stars'. Global Warming, unemployment, income disparity, international unrest, and globetrotting diseases are on a fast track and we better get on one too. It's high time for our Constitutional Professor and POTUS to use some sharp elboes. I've said it hundreds of times and I'll say it again for those who are just awakening... NOTHING OF ANY VALUE, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING CAN OR WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED UNTIL GEORGE W. BUSH AND DICK CHENEY ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIMES THEY HAVE COMMITTED AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!!!! This kind of apologetics and rationalization has to stop

Obama is going down a road that will lead to a failed presidency, by refusing to do the right thing, over and over and over. He won by promising change, and is delivering, on key issue after key issue, no change. Torture is an issue about which there can be no compromise--it is a crime, and criminals in the highest reaches of government need to be held accountable in a society that is based on the rule of law. As for the war, it was based upon a fraud from the outset. there was never any intention of "going after" Bin Laden, and at this point, Bin Laden is not even in Afghanistan. At this point the war has morphed iinto a war on the Taliban, who have never been a threat to America. Obama needs to be told in no uncertain terms, this war must be ended. Now. Political realities

Obama must do this. When 2012 rolls around, the Republicans can't attack him on this flank, at least.

we didn't elect a republican though

godistwaddle according to that logic he should just be republican lite because anything he does that isn't exactly Republican dogma...that is anything that is remotely populist and anti-war on terror ...will be attacked by the republicans. Unless I totally missed what happened in November 2008 it seems like the country would back him in a big way if he did something different then the republicans...as a matter of fact that is exactly what we elected him to do!! If we wanted a republican safe alternative or a Bush lite we would have voted for McCain.

Ummm, maybe not

No, categorically this is not the right approach. We have heard those arguments about the big bad Republicans for decades now. It is time that we stop shaking in our boots about their attacks and take them on, foursquare, here and now. Look, Obama won by advocating change and the people backed him. And the Republicans certainly attempted to attack him on his flank. Remember how Obama 'palled around with terrorists' and was 'leading us down the road to socialism' and 'was going to raise our taxes'? And worse. Who won? Obama. Why? Because he told us we were the change we were looking for and he was right. We are the change that we are looking for, the only problem is that by taking the actions he has been taking he is showing us that he is not the leader we are looking for. I know that he has done some very politically savvy things but not pursuing the crimes of the past administration is not one of them. I will give him a pass on not releasing the photos because there is some truth to those photos made public would create a swell of resentment against the US and subsequently the troops on the ground. But the fact of the photos really isn't the issue, the fact that the US set torture as a policy is the issue. If we are seen to condone that policy by not making those that set the policy accountable we will continue to foment resentment in any case. Obama's only choice in this matter is to insist that those who broke the law be accountable to it. Anything else and he will not have the support that he needs to withstand the Republican attacks in 2012. That is the political reality. If he won't fight these criminals then he doesn't deserve the support anyway. That is also the political reality.

You are so right.

He may be chasing Republican votes, but he is losing the left. I am furious, and he already lost me. I want someone with a backbone. I am sick to death of spineless Democratic politicians, and I will NEVER vote for another SPINELESS LIAR!

C'mon Kroses ...

You're disillusioned again?

No kidding?!?! You change your mind about politicians faster than a nanny can change a diaper.

Have you ever considered the possibility that the problem isn't on their end?

Why?

----do thes politicians, damn near all of them, conclude that it is better for us to not know what we already know? That is the message of "torture"! That is why the populations down wind from the Nazi crematoriums never 'knew' the offensive smell of burning flesh was burning flesh. We now know that the U.S. does "NOT Torture", and how do we know that? Because the torture makers at the top told us so. We also know that the "nontorture" only becomes "Torture" at the time of the death of the tortured--then it becomes an oops, next! Close your eyes and move on!

Does the fact that the same --

---politicians who obfuscated on 911, and gave us a late waterdowned and incompleted repeort of that day are the same ones who want the "Torture and Torture pictures" to fade away. The best and only way to protect our troops from the fallout of those pictures is to bring them home and out of that illegal 'war' zone. If we know anything about the goings on it is only a small amount and the greater amount is well known to the people of that region. The anger at seeing the "Torture pictures" will be ours.
