Dave Lindorff: Muntadar al-Zaidi Did What We Journalists Should Have Done Long Ago

When Iraqi journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi heaved his two shoes at the head of President George W. Bush during a press conference in Baghdad, he did something that the White House press corps should have done years ago.

Al-Zaidi listened to Bush blather that the half-decade of war he had initiated with the illegal invasion of Iraq had been "necessary for U.S. security, Iraqi stability (sic) and world peace" and something just snapped. The television correspondent, who had been kidnapped and held for a while last year by Shiite militants, pulled off a shoe and threw it at Bush -- a serious insult in Iraqi culture -- and shouted "This is a farewell kiss, you dog!" When the first shoe missed its target, he grabbed a second shoe and heaved it too, causing the president to duck a second time as al-Zaidi shouted, "This is from the widows, the orphans, and those who were killed in Iraq!"

I'll admit, listening to Bush lie his way through eight years of press conferences, while pre-selected reporters played along and pretended to get his attention so they could ask questions that had been submitted and vetted in advance, I have felt like throwing my shoes at the television set.

Al-Zaidi, who paid for his courageous act of protest by being brutally beaten by security guards, is a hero of the profession. He stopped taking the president's BS and called him what he is: a murderer and a criminal, with the blood of perhaps upwards of a million Iraqis on his hands. Al-Zaidi used what was supposed to be a staged photo-op for the president as an opportunity to speak up for those whose lives have been ruined by this president -- the ones our suck-up journalists routinely ignore.

I'm not suggesting that journalists should routinely leave presidential press conferences in their stocking feet. We have different ways of expressing our sentiments to people we feel have insulted our intelligence than throwing shoes at them, but it would be nice to see a journalist or two flip the president the bird when he lies so blatantly to them. Or they could all get up and just walk out, leaving him standing alone at the presidential lectern.

It's time for the press corps to stop treating presidents like royalty. If he accomplished anything at all in eight years in office, President Bush has demonstrated that, to the contrary, the president is a very ordinary -- and in his case a rather less than ordinary -- man. The office of president deserves no more respect than that of the mayor of Detroit, or of Wasilla.

My suggestion is that the press corps use the remaining five weeks of the Bush Administration to develop a new relationship with the presidency -- one in which they drop all the phony propriety and tradition and start acting like boisterous newshounds of old, barking questions, laughing cruelly at inane answers, demanding follow-ups when they are given the run-around, and, where necessary, walking out, or perhaps tossing the occasional shoe.

The journalism profession was a full-blown disaster and an utter disgrace during the Bush Aadministration, and with all the crises facing the country and the world, in part because of that failure on their part, we cannot afford to have them continue that failure into the Obama Administration.

With the Bush Administration reduced to a running joke at this point, it gives the journalism profession a chance to redeem itself by using these few remaining weeks to establish a new tradition for presidential press conferences and photo-ops -- one that can continue on into the new presidency.

Meanwhile, I'm suggesting that my alma mater, the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, hire al-Zaidi to teach a class in press conference journalism techniques. They should make it a multi-year appointment, because if he left after just one year, his would be difficult shoes to fill.

NOTE: Speaking of shoes and the White House, Skip Mendler of Honesdale, PA has a great idea. He suggests that everyone who is disgusted with the outgoing Bush/Cheney administration send a shoe to the White House. Just imagine a pile up of a million smelly old running shoes in the White House mailroom! I think he's got something. Spread the word!

Shoe Thower

I'm totally against violence, but we are human with human reactions. The Bush policies have made most of us angry and frustrated. We in America can't begin to sense the anger and frustration of the Iraqi people. This journalist has been personally impacted by Bush's horrendous policies. He is angry and frustrated and he did what all of us would love to do. As I watched the video of the incident, what struck me was the endlessly mindless smirk on that face we have so come to loathe. He thought this, too, was a big joke. In fact, Bush feels that he is above the laws of God and man, while most of us know that he is merely beneath contempt. This man has betrayed his country, the Middle East and the world by using his power to serve himself and his cronies. If there is one shred of decency in this man, here is the test. Talk with the authorities in the Middle East, tell them that he understands the frustrations of this journalist and ask that the authorities drop the charges, release the gentleman and allow him to return to his profession. My personal view toward this man is that while his actions may not have been wise, his motives are clear. Bush turned us into the terrorists which we are supposedly against, and done far more damage than the terrorists for whom we were supposedly searching. This journalist showed more courage in this one act of defiance and anger than our Congress has shown since Bush illegally attacked and began the occupation of Iraq. Bush has committed scores of impeachable offenses yet while the GOP would go after Clinton for extra-marital dalliances, they would allow one of their own to shred the fabric of democracy. I, apparently in massive company, wish this journalist all the best and pray they free him soon. It is not Muntadar al-Zaidi who should be imprisoned; it is George Bush, Richard Cheney and their cronies who aided and abetted in subverting Democracy and terrorizing the planet.

Re: Shoe-thrower

Your one wonderful sentence sums it up beautifully: "This journalist showed more courage in this one act of defiance and anger than our Congress has shown since Bush illegally attacked and began the occupation of Iraq." May your holidays be filled with peace and prosperity!!!

Muntadar al-Zaidi

Until now, I wasn't sure of his name, but he's my new hero. What he did took courage; that seems to be the missing ingredient in today's mainstream media, especially in and around our nation's capitol. As for the shoe-mailing idea, what's the address of the new digs in Dallas?

The difference between Zaidi and Joe the Plumber

Joe the plumber was in the news again this week, because he now has turned on John McCain. He still loves Sarah Palin though, but he admitted to Glen Beck that McCain's answers to his (Joe's) questions "appalled" him. And yet he still supported McCain over Obama. Now Joe is the moron who got to talk to Obama and asked him about his tax plan. And in one of those "man bites dog" moments that makes news... Joe the Voter lied to Barack the Politician. Joe claimed to be pulling down $250,000 a year and said that Obama's tax plan would make his taxes go up. And yet the reality was that Joe was pulling down about $45,000 a year and would actually get more back under Obama's plan than McCain's. But Joe wasn't having that... Despite dodging his own taxes to the tune of $1200 and owing a local hospital $1300, Joe still identifies with the wealthy of this land. He is still more concerned about the rich having to pay more taxes because he is terrified of the expression "spreading the wealth around". But he's not too concerned about the transfer of wealth from everyone else in this country to the rich, it's the thought of some of those rich people having to pay a bit more that gives him night terrors. On the other hand, Mr Zaidi has seen his country invaded. If asked, he may not be able to tell us exactly how many Iraqi's have been killed by Chimpy McFuckup's Big Adventure, whether that number is still close to 625,000 or if it's reached a million or more, but I know for a fact that Mr Zaidid knows some of the Iraqi's who were killed. And he knows, just like the rest of the world outside of the Red States, who is responsible for the devastation that has wracked his country. So he threw his shoes at the Smirking Chimp. And that's our moment of clarity. On the one hand, an idiot too stupid to realize which side of the plantation's pecking order he's on, and on the other hand, a man who saw his one last chance to send his oppressor a message of defiance and couragously took it. We need to find out what kind of shoes Mr Zaidi was wearing and every patriot who loves Democracy should buy a pair. Make a political statement and support an Iraqi industry at the same time. I just hope if I can get a pair, they're comfortable... then again, maybe that's our problem.

You know this is true!

Muntadar al Zaidi...

For eight years the media hounded Bill Clinton. For the next eight years they gave George W. Bush a free pass. Great idea- go back to the Clinton "accountability" days when Barack Obama takes office. Already there has been some attempt by the media to find an obviously nonexistent Obama link to the recent Illinois shenanigans. Are you really suggesting Obama should be subjected to the type of coverage Clinton got?
