Bob Kincaid: Last Man Standing in Liberal Radio Network Land

Head On Radio Network's Bob Kincaid Talks to BuzzFlash About What Air America's Failure Can Teach Us About Progressive Success.

BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
by Meg White

With the demise of liberal talk radio station Air America last month, liberals lost their voice in commercial radio. But is that really such a huge loss?

Bob Kincaid, a progressive radio host based in rural West Virginia and co-founder of The Head On Radio Network (HORN), will be the first to tell you he's not happy Air America is gone.

"It's a sad thing," Kincaid told me in a telephone interview Wednesday. "I don't want less liberal radio; I want more liberal radio."

As the host of Head On with Bob Kincaid, he welcomed left-wing competition against his online radio show, which has outlasted the recently-defunct liberal experiment of the AM airwaves. But he does have a strong opinion as to how we got to this barren landscape in progressive radio.

"I think part of the reason Air America failed was because it was set up to work on a right-wing business model," Kincaid said. "I think it's highly unlikely that [model] is going to be successful down the road."

He explained that progressives are less tolerant of on-air endorsements than conservatives, making such a model less profitable for a liberal station. Head On's model is more BuzzFlashian than Air-American. You won't hear him hawking gold or Swedish mattresses.

"We're supported almost exclusively via listener contributions," he said. "Nobody's getting paid here. This is an all-volunteer effort."

Head On also receives a little money in underwriting each month from the grassroots environmental organization Coal River Mountain Watch because, as Kincaid puts it, they "understand the desperate need for independent, liberally-influenced radio."

Kincaid wouldn't have it any other way.

"Sooner or later [advertising] will get you in trouble," Kincaid said, noting that there will always be the underlying temptation to engage in "preemptive self-censorship" if you accept ads.

"Because we are supported by listener contributions, we're not beholden," he said.

Kincaid sees the Air America failure in a larger context, however. Not only did the conservatives' business model fail in a progressive context, but the left has also failed to compete with the right in terms of media presence.

"We're still waiting for liberal America to find out that it's tired of getting its asses handed to it by right-wing America," Kincaid said.

While conservatives have been busy snapping up radio and television stations left and right throughout the past two decades or so, liberals were sitting on their hands.

Kincaid said that while some progressives out there understand the importance of owning outlets, "the so-called 'deep pockets' in Liberal Land don't."

"We're not losing this fight; we're not even on the field of battle," he said of the media ownership landscape. With Air America, the effort turned out to be too little, too late.

"The HORN was part of the effort to build a liberal radio network," he said. "With Air America dropping dead, we're the last one there is."

Kincaid allows that while "there are some great liberal talkers out there," it's still "tough to get stations." Head On with Bob Kincaid broadcasts live for three hours every weekday, from 6 pm to 9 pm ET and it is meticulously archived through the White Rose Society, along with dozens of other liberal radio programs.

Back in 2004, you could hear Kincaid on the dial in West Virginia, on what he refers to as "terrestrial radio." But he explains that he was "bought off the air" because some locals disagreed with his views on mountaintop removal mining and other issues. Kincaid, who refers to himself as a "hillbilly elitist" is definitely over the loss.

"I prefer Internet radio," Kincaid said, noting that now he doesn't have to deal with censorship or time constraints such as breaking for commercials or station identification. "The Internet, frankly, is the future."

He doesn't feel threatened by satellite radio, which he predicts will "will fall by the wayside." Kincaid offers up the recent merger of the two major providers of such programming as evidence that "Sirius and XM are not a viable business model."

But it's not just about technology. For Kincaid it all comes down to the very purpose of being on the air. He describes HORN as "conversation radio."

"We're in the business -- if you can call it a business -- of simply trying to have a conversation... without people being shouted down," Kincaid explained. By contrast, in commercial radio "the purpose is not to deliver programming to consumers. The purpose is to deliver potential consumers to a product seller."

When Kincaid talks about his listeners, you hear a deep level of respect in his tone. With the self-deprecation and lack of confidence rampant in the progressive movement, it's downright affirming Kincaid say that, as the liberal working class, "we are the people who are carrying this country on our backs."

Because of his respect for the listener (and thanks to the lack of time constraints you get on "terrestrial radio," where callers are often cut off), everyday Americans have a chance to contribute meaningfully to this unique concept of "conversation radio."

"People that share their time with us are the most important part of the process," Kincaid said. He also pointed out that callers can be a wealth of information, saying that "the folks who call in to the program" have just as much to contribute as some "policy wonk in D.C."

Despite how tough it is to keep together a show on a shoestring budget, Kincaid expresses an optimism that Head On will continue and an amazement at the donors who continue to help keep it going:

"That's a form of patriotism that I think is stunning in scope."

Among other things, Bob Kincaid is quite the erudite commentator

Among other things, Bob Kincaid is quite the erudite and eloquent speaker. For example, the other day he was replaying a recording of Thom Hartmann talking, I believe, about abortion. Thom said the word "ovums", at which point Bob jumped in with the comment that reflected exactly what I was thinking . He said "Thom, a Latin moment - that's ova.." Perfectly right, perfectly timed, and a correction without being insulting.

Many thanks to Meg White and BuzzFlash for this wonderful and well-deserved interview.

Hope all is well on your end.

Take care --

Great show!

This is a great radio show.  I usually listen to the FREE podcasts as it is sometimes hard to listen live (6-9pm M-F, EST).  It takes some getting used to if one is accustomed to the slick, sexy, mindless mainstream media.  He will talk with a caller for an extended period of time.  The conversations are like calling an old friend.  Bob kinda reminds me of Garrison Keilor.  He is a storytelling wordsmith.  His clever wit is enduring and entertaining.  He provides frequent updates on a cause near to his heart (and should be to ours), West Virginia mountain top mining.  Most appealing to me:  Bob is an incredibly kind, caring and genuine, human being.  There is no script.  I don't think he has notes on his hand or a teleprompter.  Just conversation radio.  I do not know what I would do without him (and Amy Goodman).  His shows comfort me.  If you have not listened, please do.  Most of all support his radio show with tons of cash!  I don't want to see this voice struggle.  He has true family values.  He considers the shows participants (listeners & chat room) family.  His son will occasionally help with the show.  I cannot endorse the show enough.

Thanks to Buzzflash for taking an interest in this truly human, being.

H.O.R.N.

There is something amazing that the last liberal network comes from rural West Virginia, but when you understand the devotion, the willingness to forego financial rewards, and the utter intelligence of Bob Kincaid, it all makes sense! I started listening because of Mike Malloy, but I can see that in many ways he is Malloy's equal. In terms of activism he is heads above all other talk show hosts. For me as a former West Virginian his January 7, 2010 show illuminated his talent and activism. He gave in depth coverage to the science showing the irreversibility of Mountaintop Removal, a subject which he holds dear as do I, and yet he was easily able to change focus as callers brought up other topics. I feel so proud that he is holding up the banner of liberalism in what can be a hostile environment, not only in West Virginia but in the United States.

NEWS I CAN BELIEVE IN! PEOPLE I CAN RELATE WITH!!

I got hooked on the Head ON Radio Network a couple of years ago when I was searching on my Itunes for Spoken Word stations. I clicked the icon and instantly heard Bob Kincaid speaking in his very interesting way. He just drew me in with the real true facts like I have never heard them before and it inspired me to want to keep listening with his theatrical and comical wit (and I love when he does the voices!) Then when i heard some of the callers and how he treated them...I was hooked! There were people out there that felt the same way I do!  The HORN radio and internet community is one of the best internet communities I have ever been a part of.   Jon Fox and Guy James are great too an d all the people in the chat room when the shows are on LIVE.

Thank me later. ps~ Thank you Mike Malloy for introducing me to Head On with Bob Kincaid!!!

What Head On Radio Means

I wish I had the time to properly pay my tribute to what the Head On Radio Network has meant and continues to mean to me. Let me say this, I went running to Head On when Air America fired Mike Malloy, I have not missed a pod cast since. Thank You BuzzFlash for this wonderful article, I cannot encourage people enough to check out Head On with Bob Kincaid, Guy James (when he is available), Jon Fox and Rick Smith on the weekends, and anyone else I may be forgetting.

head on radio

I am a listener of the HORN and I enjoy it and get alot from it and I encourage anyone to join in. It is conversation radio and a lot like a community and is easy to do and be apart of and worthwhile.

Liberal Radio

Bob Kincaid is one of the hardest working men in the radio business.  I don't think most people understand how hard it is to do 3 hours every night and stay fresh.  Must people run out of material and exhaust their world view in a few hours, but Bob has worked to stay on top of his game and present a great show night after noght.  The sad thing is there just isn't any money for liberal radio.  The limbaugh's of the world are bought and paid for corporate message monkeys who regurgitate their talking points on command.  We need more liberal radio, in fact, we need a local liberal talker in every place where there is a con job mouth piece.  The only way that happens is by growing a liberal community of listener consumers who buy products and services who support liberal talk, LIKE THE CONS DO.  Wake up people and support Bob and others doing the good work.  Trucker Out

The H.O.R.N. = family

I have been a Head on Radio listener for almost 2 yrs now, and I must say that I absolutely love everything about it! Bob Kincaid (and his colleages) are such a breath of fresh air to the liberal community!

What Bob Kincaid has managed to create with the HORN is not just a Radio show/network, but a family. Even though I haven't met Bob in person, I feel like I know him, Jox Fox, Guy James, and all of the HORN callers.

I must say that Bob is a total southern Gentleman too...lol! He takes time to answer every single call throughout the night no matter how long it takes, even if it means skipping a break. He is THAT deadicated to getting a positive (and progressive) message out there to liberials and sane minded human-beings.

I honestly don't know what I would do without the network. I remember the day that I was laid off from my job, I wrote an impassioned email about how I lost my job and my situation.  Later that evening when I tuned into Bob's (Head On with Bob Kincaid) show I was almost brought to tears after he read my message. That simple act alone, met so much to me, and made me realize how much of family we all are...no matter race, religion, income, or distance. The Head On Radio Network is family.

So I encourage everyone to take out just a few mintues of your time and listen to what the network has to offer! You will NOT be disappointed.

The HORN is badly needed right now

I've been aware of the HORN for several years now but only recently began listening to podcasts of Bob Kincaid's show.  There's really nothing like it out there in either terrestrial or internet radio.  Jeff Farias has a similar tendency to give space and respect to callers on the show, and to allow them to talk for spans of time that would be considered "bad radio" under the common operating guidelines of mainstream talk radio.  I agree with Kincaid that the internet is the future of radio, although that future is in danger of coming about too slowly to forestall the end of some of the great pioneering work being done in this medium right now.

One thing that sets Kincaid's show (I don't know yet about the rest of the HORN lineup, as I haven't heard any of them) absolutely apart from any show, whether terrestrial or web-based, is the lack of advertising.  It's truly 3 hours or however long Bob wants to go of just about non-stop talk radio.  Maybe I'm missing something by listening exclusively to the podcasts, but my impression is that it just never stops until the final credits.

Regardless, in the short span of time since I started listening, I've rapidly come to appreciate what a gem Bob Kincaid is.  He is a true professional, a unique voice in an increasingly barren liberal radio environment, and a uniquely needed one at that.

The Head On Radio

I live in California in an area where internet radio is the only choice to receive a variety of radio stations due to mountain interference. I have enjoyed The Horn for some time.  Bob Kincaid has a very interesting show which can be streamed on ITunes  in their radio section under Talk/News. Try it! With the demise of Air America we all need to support this progressive station.

Laura

Thank you Bob Kinkaid

I've listened to the H.O.R.N. for the past few weeks.  Bob and his listeners have interesting, deep conversations that remind me there are still sane people in this country.

Its good to see Bob get some

Its good to see Bob get some of the recognition he deserves.  I haven't been following long, but stumbled over it while looking for some information on mountain top coal "mining."  I live in Oregon and wasn't until I listened to one of his shows that I learned our power companies are complicit.

\__^..^

Bob Kincaid and the H.O.R.N.

I commented on Jon Fox's facebook page a couple of days ago, but I want to say something here also. I'm a LONG TIME talk radio junkie....and PLEASE believe me when I tell you that when I first heard Mr. Kincaid's (ok, Bob's) show, I was literally blown away. Call me weird if you want, but I suddenly felt like I was sitting in my living room (or on my front porch) with a bunch of good friends. I had never heard THAT KIND of talk radio before...any topic is cool, the conversation is never too short like it is on other programs, no one gets cut off, Bob makes you feel instantly welcome and comfortable, and, (because of the on-air time that he allows his callers) the whole experience makes you feel as if you suddenly and genuinely have a group of cool new/old friends. Again, if you think any of this is weird and/or overly corny...you have never listened to Bob's show...PERIOD. OK, I guess I'll stop here, although I hate to. Mainly because I haven't mentioned the other great H.O.R.N. people/shows. Namely, the great gonzo Jon Fox, Rick Smith, and Guy James. NOTE: I also refuse to go without mentioning Rick Goodner. I'll continue to wait for his return...and I know that I'm only one of many. Alright, I'm finally done runnin' off at the fingers. :-) --Peace Out.

The Talented Bob Kincaid

Others have rightfully praised Bob Kincaid as a fierce and selfless defender of liberal principles.  I wish to add how talented he is.  In him we have a liberal champion who possesses a powerful eloquence and an incisive wit.  Bob even has a remarkable gift for mimicry and uses it in uproarious portrayals of the scoundrels and buffoons on the political stage.  He knows the power and impact of humor.  "Head-On" is not only edifying, it is wonderfully entertaining.

HeadOnRadio

I have been a member of the "family" for well over a year.  Although I don't get to listen while the show is "live" I do have an internet radio at my bedside.  One of the great things about Bob and his station is that the show is repeated so one can listen when the time is right for you.  He has kept me informed while on my various travels throughout the world.  I have even listened in while in Peru by downloading the mp3 file and playing it on my ZEN.  He is clearly a cut above what you might expect from a "hillbilly host".  I can atest that he reads his e-mail and will respond even if he doesn't use your material on the show.

Bob Kincaid, Last Man Standing.

The HORN is an essential grassroots experiment in alternative media that is thriving. We need to bring in more listeners from the Air America fallout, the independent affiliates, and the the Pacifica stations and help Bob Kincaid create a more viable progressive media community.

Some things you should know about the Head-On Radio Network...

What can I say that all these heartfelt comments haven't already said?  I'm not really sure.  Bob is like a brother to me, as I have met him a few times.  But even before I ever met Bob face-to-face, simply as a listener, I felt he was world-class, the real flippin' deal... with a temperament somewhere between Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy, and certainly on par with both in terms of talent, wit, and dedication.  But the comments to this story are heartfelt because most have been coming from Bob's listeners.  And whether you've been listening to Bob Kincaid and the Head-On Radio Network for 5 weeks or 5 years, you WILL feel like you are a part of a family.  So it's only natural that Bob's listeners would feel, like me, so close to Bob, and to each other--the larger H.O.R.N. community.

I would passionately urge all Buzzflash readers and Air America Radio refugees to head on over and tune in to www.headonradionetwork.com.  But in case you aren't convinced yet, here are...

Some things you should know about the Head-On Radio Network:

  1. Head-On with Bob Kincaid is CONVERSATION RADIO, NOT "talk radio".  This distinction cannot be stressed enough (which is why I obnoxiously bolded/all-capped/high-lighted/italicized/underlined it).  This is not mere positioning or some marketing gimmick on Bob's part.  Head-On is a completely different radio experience from conventional "talk radio".  Bob does not talk AT the listener.  He may monologue a bit at the beginning of the show (And he is damn good).  This may be 5 minutes, 45 minutes, or anywhere in between, depending on the night.  But after Bob starts taking calls, things really get cooking.  If you want to call in, make one point, and talk for 5 minutes (much longer than you'd likely be allowed on most programs), go for it.  But if you want to call in and chat with Bob on a number of topics, share your story, whatever, you can go for that too.  As long as it isn't 15 minutes to 9 pm and Bob has all the lines full, it is very common for Bob to spend 30 minutes or more dialoging with one caller.  If you don't want to call in, send him an email, or jump in the Head On chatroom.  I personally don't feel very comfortable speaking on the radio, and also I am often not able to call in.  But if I send Bob a decent email, with something interesting or funny to add, he'll often read it on air.  And the several times I have called in, Bob made me feel perfectly comfortable.

  2. The H.O.R.N. is not an echo chamber.  Think Bob is too soft on Obama?  CALL IN!  Think he's too hard on Obama?  CALL IN!  As caller Matt Osborne himself said in tonight's very show, (I'm paraphrasing) "when our swords clash, the sparks that fly off--that is the light of truth".  Yeah, if you're an irrational wingnut, you might not get too far.  But if you are an open-minded conservative, go ahead, Bob'll talk to you.  But for sure, whether you call yourself a progressive, a liberal, a Democrat, a lefty, or whatever--the HORN is YOUR new home on teh Internets.  Hey, I don't always agree with Bob.  Usually I do.  But often when I don't, I really don't.  That is just part of the process.

  3. The H.O.R.N. is a family, but it is NOT an exclusive club.  If you listen a few times, and you hear some repeat callers, don't get the idea that you're not "in the club".  Bob does have MANY regular callers, whom you may hear several times a month, or sometimes a person will even call every day in a given week.  So it goes.  These callers are really interesting, IMHO, and you could think of them as Bob's legion of unpaid co-hosts.  But just because there are "regulars", doesn't mean YOU can't participate.  Bob welcomes new callers.  You may not always get through, but often you will.  Bob does not screen calls, play favorites, or even know who's in the queue.  There is the occasional pre-scheduled interview with an author or activist, but 95% of the time, you've got as much a chance as anyone to get on the air with Bob.  I've even had my Dad call in twice when he had particularly funny stories to tell about getting past screeners on "Christian" right-wing radio and then ripping them to shreds.  Both times he got through with no trouble and had a great chat with Bob.  There have also been occasions where I tried to get through, maybe about 1/2 way into the show, waited on hold for 90 minutes, and didn't get through.  So it goes.  But be warned, if you call in once, twice, a few times, and then you don't call or email or pop in the chatroom for many months, Bob WILL WORRY.  I (because I listen daily) will worry.  And the whole rest of the H.O.R.N. family will WORRY about you, wondering if you are OK.  That's not hyperbole.  That's family.

  4. The H.O.R.N. is FREE (for you).  I noticed some commenters below mentioning they contribute or subscribe to the H.O.R.N.  I make a monthly contribution, myself.  But do not get the wrong idea.  There is no entrance fee.  It is not pay-to-play.  There is no "lite" version or "premium" membership.  You can listen for FREE (as long as you have internet and speakers).  You can go into the chatroom (which is active during the live broadcasts) for FREE.  You can podcast Bob's show (courtesy the White Rose Society) for FREE.  Get the picture?  It is true that Bob runs on a shoestring budget (which is an overstatement, because, having seen the H.O.R.N. West Virginia studio firsthand, I doubt there is much room in the budget for shoestrings).  And so the H.O.R.N. does require contributions from listeners.  I have been a monthly subscriber for quite a while, but this gains me no special access.  The H.O.R.N. is free for all.  If you decide to tune in, and then decide it is worth supporting, then by all means, do so!  If I suddenly became rich, I would underwrite the H.O.R.N. for as much as I possibly could, so he could do what he must to reach more listeners, to better support his beautiful family, and to, by-god, PAY his ALL VOLUNTEER staff of techies, "news ninjas", chatroom moderators, other H.O.R.N. show hosts, etc.  And I would tell him, by-god, that I would WITHDRAW my underwriting the very SECOND he started self-censoring and agreeing with me just for the sake of agreeing with me (which he never would do; see point #2 above).  If only some rich liberal would understand this, the H.O.R.N. could make strides far beyond anything Air America ever did.

  5. The H.O.R.N. is more than just Bob Kincaid's show...  There is the always engaging Fox'd Up! with Jon Fox, which airs Sundays, hosted by a quirky expat down in Australia, with a focus on environmental conservation, music, and whatever the hell else floats his proverbial boat.  There is The Rick Smith Show out of Pennsylvania, with a strong focus on labor issues.  And there is the amazing Guy James Show, which is sadly on hiatus right now, because, like you and me, Guy is a working stiff with real problems, in the broken United States of America, not some bloviating, drug-addled, corporate welfare queen, paid millions to spread his message on the public airwaves.  If you listened to the H.O.R.N. last week, you heard Guy get back behind the mic to tag-team with Bob the H.O.R.N.'s inspired coverage of the Families USA Health Action 2010 Conference.  And Guy is truly the man!  AFAIK, after Mike Malloy was suddenly fried by AAR a few years ago, Guy's show was the first to have Mike on for an interview--which was a great service to all the fans desperate for their Malloy fix at the time.  If only the H.O.R.N. had the necessary financial support to thrive, not just survive, maybe Guy could get back behind the mic for good!

And I would be remiss to not mention that The H.O.R.N. has had many other great shows and hosts in the past, that sadly have gone by the wayside, often for reasons of work/real life stress interfering with one's ability to host a show.  Bruce Burch, Joe Vecchio, Dr. Bill O'Brien, Billy Shears, Dr. Rick Goodner, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting, all hosted great shows over the course of the H.O.R.N.'s lifespan (I know, because I've heard them all).  And without question the boldest and most mind-opening (for me, personally), was the LGBT-focused "Strictly Confidential" (archived here) program once hosted by Peter Godbold.  Hopefully, in the future, some of these great hosts, or perhaps other brave hosts-to-be, will join the Head-On family.

  6. The H.O.R.N. is WORLDWIDE...  Bob lives in rural West Virginia, so naturally he often speaks of WV issues.  For example, I learned of the corporate warcrime that is mountaintop removal by way of Bob's show, long before I ever heard even the faintest whisper about it in the mainstream media.  But if you happen to tune in when Bob is discussing MTR, listen and learn, but don't think that his show is mono-focused.  It is not.  He has listeners literally coast-to-coast and all over the planet, and the topics of discussion range equally as widely.  You might hear a caller from Japan and an email from Sweden in one evening.  Head-On's audio engineer is located in Australia, and its computer tech guy is in Florida, yet Bob's studio is in WV.  And there have been hosts from all over, as I mentioned above (see point #5).

  7. The H.O.R.N. is easy to listen to...  Wanna stream it live?  Go here!  That's the Java player, but via the main page, you can also find links to H.O.R.N. streams in Windows Media Player, Real Player, or QuickTime, in a variety of bandwidths.  (When there is no live programming, reruns are streamed).  Personally I use the iTunes stream.  In iTunes, click the "Radio" button in the sidebar, click "News / Talk Radio", then scroll down until you find "The Head-On Radio Network (The H.O.R.N.)".  You want to podcast it instead?  Go here!   (Ben Burch of White Rose Society.org hosts the archive).  If you wanna subscribe to the podcast in iTunes, go to "Advanced" in the menu bar and click "Subscribe to Podcast...", punch this in-- http://www.WhiteRoseSociety.org/Kincaid.xml --click OK, and you're good to go!  A quick way to listen to the archives of Bob's show on your iPod touch or iPhone is by using the Head-On web app.  So there you go!

So come on over, folks!  The Head-On Radio Network is waiting to hear what you have to say.  Air America may be gone.  But the H.O.R.N. is still alive and kicking.  If you are feeling lost or abandoned at the loss of AAR, the H.O.R.N., I promise, will keep you sane.  The H.O.R.N. is the future of liberal/progressive radio.  It will either become a footnote in history someday, a chapter in, perhaps, the "A People's History of the United States: Highlights from the 21st Century", the little, unknown network that paved the way for the future of liberal & progressive grassroots broadcasting.  Or it will grow to its true potential, get in the game, and start whipping ass!  But the later can only happen with YOU.

Peace + love.

AWESOME! HORN 101

I love it! HORN 101. Awesome description and comment!

I have been listening for a couple of years or so and I totally agree with this comment. Bob, Jon, Guy, and Rick are  upstanding brilliant guys, like all the women and men HORN listeners are too!! They respect you for who you are and how you feel and they never make fun of you for what you do not know. They only respect you for wanting to know more.

PEACE!

Head on Radio Network

I found the Horn last year, thanks to Mike Malloy. It been a great place to hang out to get your spirits lifted. Great conversations on the news of the day "cussing and discussion" of the right wing wingnuts and screw balls. Plus plenty of news you can use, from healthcare, mountain top removal, and my favorite subject green energy.

So If you reading this, and are not part of the Horn family... WHY NOT? Come join us, as I write this it is time to get ready for front porch Friday.

Bring you favorite beverage and your sense of humor. Kick back put your feet up and enjoy, what Radio should be...

H.O.R.N

Head on with Bob Kincaid is outstanding. This show is more than just calling out Repiglickan bootlicking morans. The show goes in all directions and is absolutely one of a kind.

Very Much Needed

I don't think I can make it through a day without listening to Bob Kincaid; his insight and knowledge shed much needed light against conservatives. The HORN is a must listen for anyone who values intelligent, throught provoking conversations.

The H.O.R.N. is the future

Progressive voices all around the country benefit from development and promotion of resources like Bob Kincaid and the folks at the HORN. I think that not only is Bob's work is a testament to the potential power of progressive radio, but the operation is an inspiring and successful model that is 100% people-powered.

Many thanks to Bob and his team, and I hope folks will consider enjoying, promoting, and donating to the program!

Grateful for THE HORN network

I lucked into finding THE HORN network on the internet virtually from its inception. It’s been a part of my day almost everyday since.
With THE HORN I am part of a community, a community of liberal thought and gracious, thoughtful people. I am grateful that THE HORN is there for me. I have made real friends through the chat room, been informed, entertained, charmed and tickled with Bob and the callers.

The HORN is the best kept suprise

Several 4 years ago I stumbled upon the archived podcast of Bob Kincaid's show and I began to listen.  I am from the Northeast and I originally didn't know if West Virginia liberal talk would be my cup of tea but was I wrong!

Bob's show is addictive.  Once you have experienced conversational vs 'talk' radio you will never again be satisified with any other form of interactive radio broadcast.

The audience that Bob's show has is amazing.  They hail from all over the world and are dyed in the wool liberals who always bring interesting points to the show.

Anyone that has not availed themselves to listen to the HORN is missing far more then they will ever know. I am a monthly subscriber and will continue to be so as long as there is a HORN.

My new "must-listen radio"

I just discovered Bob Kincaid a few weeks ago, ironically just before Air America fizzled and disappeared for good.  At first, it was a shock to hear three hours of authentic conversation -- totally not the style and pace I was used to in liberal radio -- but I was hooked.  I can happily listen to a whole show of nothing-but-Bob unraveling the political news of the day, but the unhurried conversations with his various callers make the whole thing even richer, and the longer I listen the more I'm loving the sense of community he's established.  This is an awesome blend of intelligence and casual no-b.s. humanity, and I can't imagine this style of broadcasting not appealing to a huge cross-section of progressive listeners... they just need to know about it.

Head On Radio Network

This is as real. It's true conversation radio where conversations are allowed to meander and weave without pressure to get to a point to sell some exotic remedy for anything you can imagine. It's a true family and I've been on board for somewhere near 6 or more years. It's a place where we can all get together and share ideas and all learn something in the process. There have been a few times where I haven't been able to contribute something in a post or email but I do see light at the end of the tunnel and hope to contribute more in the future. Check it out.

Peace.

David

Once you listen, you are hooked. HORN stands out above the rest!

I am a radio talk show junky but none of them have my complete attention like the HORN.

Upon finding the HORN four years ago, I had many Republican views and opinions.  By listening to the HORN, I am a changed person for the better.

The HORN taught me no matter who you are, legal or illegal, black or white, yellow or red, rich or poor,  smart or not, working or unemployed, fat or skinny, educated or not, male or female, gay or straight, religious or not, no matter what political party you belong to, physically or mentally challenged, the truth of the matter is we all share the same in common, we are human beings first and foremost and with that we all deserve to be treated equally with respect, honor, and dignity.

Some of the HORN listeners are involved in the efforts of helping others, this includes Katrina and Save Coal Mountain Removal, Environmental issues.

Bob Kincaid, is a kind, gentle and compassionate man, who cares about people.  The listeners who call his show, are assured they have Bob's attention and they can talk about any political or environment issue without being interrupted.  Disagree or agree, you are entitled to the same respect.

Bob Kincaid is extremely intelligent, he is an avid reader and he retains most of what he reads.  He quotes verses in books that he read 20 years ago.

I will be forever indebted and grateful to the HORN and to its talk show hosts.  They have taught me more than they will ever realize and for that, I say to them and to its listerners, "Thank You so very MUCH".

Conversation Radio---Talk Radio the way it ought to be

Bob Kincaid does talk radio the way it ought to be....No sound bites...No comercials every 5 minutes hawking gold or weight loss products...No one subject only and no others for the whole 3 hours...it's pretty much anything goes.

I started listening to Bob about four years ago.  I listened to Mike Malloy on the old I.E. network then I listened to Fouth Estate radio then finally I found Head on Radio Network. I think the idea of "Conversation Radto is what all progressives should aim for. Every night I listen to Bob I find out something I had not heard elsewhere. There are callers from Japan...Australia...England...Maine...Oregon...Florida...across the USA and the world.

Bob does what he can with donations from listeners $5 and $10 at a shot. Bob still hopes for a call from George Soros with a check in the mail but until that happens we send what we can when we can.

It's a place where Bob and his callers ask the questions you want to hear on the MSM. The other night we were wondering who was paying for the four guys involved in the "Louisiana Watergate" ? Also why the MSM is not covering the meltdown of Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers ?

The MSM is scared they will be called "liberal" well hell Bob is damn proud to be called a "liberal".

Come by some night at 6 p.m. sit down on porch and listen for a while and if the feeling hits you pick up the phone and talk to Bob. He'll be happy to sit back and talk a while

You want good radio? The H.O.R.N. is it.

I'll simply put it like this:

The Head On Radio Network has accomplished more with a shoestring budget than most other radio stations with 10 times the budget.

Could you even IMAGINE what the HORN can do if they had steady funding?

Tune in to "Head On Radio with Bob Kincaid" to get an idea :)

Outstanding Show

It's great to have this show on the air. If you're a punch-the-bully-in-the-nose kind of liberal, this is also your kind of show.

Keep fighting the good fight, Bob!

There is not much more I can say...

That has not already been said, The HORN is all of that, and much more as it becomes a personal conversation when you discover it for yourself no matter how you stumble upon it.

That is something that must be experianced first hand.

It is the Home of Liberal Talk radio... and it is built with heart, smarts, and pure grit.

Going on its 7th Year!!... If you are not familar with this Internet Radio station yet... What are you waiting for?

The anti-venom to right wing sloganeering

My memory fails me as to the first time I heard Head On with Bob Kincaid;I'm thinking perhaps four years ago .From the first the thing that was most impressive was the wide spectrum of perspective and/or opinion on nearly any current subject coming from the listeners. Bob has the special talent (or lost art) of actually listening to callers in such a way

that they end up expessing more and more articulately than perhaps they anticipated when they dialed in. I know ,it's happened to me . From economics professors to truck drivers ,environmentalists ,retirees, stay at home moms, all have worked with Bob as host to flesh out and expose the fallacies, blusterings, and straight out hate speech coming from the right . During the darkest days of the Bush years,on a budget more like fish line than shoestring,Head On with Bob Kincaid, along with the other program offerings on the HORN,offered and continue to offer at least a modicum of solace for progressives who wake up to the daily headlines  scratch their heads and go"WTF??!!"

Thanks, Bob.

I consider myself an Air America "refugee"  - and not just recently, because it folded. In the early part of 2009, I found myself scouring through my internet radio stations list on iTunes and came across Head On. I listened in and never looked back to Air America. Even though I really liked Ron Reagan's show, which aired at the same time as Bob's show, I found myself preferring to listen to Head On. Bob is right about the conversation format. It is different, obvious, and yet -- brilliant. His program is anchored in educating listeners about the horrors of mountaintop removal in West Virginia. After learning more about this terrible scourge brought on by the coal companies, I realized I was still naive about many things. Bob's show tackles and offers fresh perspective on all the other news of the day that the corporate media won't touch. With those who call in (many of them regulars) and the great people to commiserate with in the chat room, there is so much more to gain from being part of the Head On family. Bob is also quite funny, gutsy, and a thespian at heart, making you laugh and cry. Unlike the AA format that cut callers off after only a few seconds (usually to go to lengthy commercial breaks), Head On allows for REAL conversation where you can engage with Bob for several minutes of in-depth discussion. Bob also surprises listeners pretty regularly with incredible interviews and debates, such as the recent interview with Professor Ayers about Blair Mountain, and the interview with the scientists who - in no uncertain terms - informed the Obama Administration that there was scientific proof that mountaintop removal was destroying the environment and harming W VA's citizens and therefore MUST BE STOPPED. Then, Bob went to significant lengths to attend and pipe into his radio program in real time the recent Kennedy/Blankenship climate debate - a real treat. That Mr. Kincaid is the last man still standing IS and ISN'T amazing in a converse way. Head On operates on a shoestring with donations from listeners. It has experienced program attrition, such as losing Guy James' show - which we have every hope will return. And yet, it still chugs on, because it remains true to form, disseminates the truth, is independent, and has a loyal fan base. Long live Head On Radio Network.

The H.O.R.N. : An Audio Family

As a new listener to The H.O.R.N., I'm particularly  charmed by the genuine feeling of fellowship ( & even family) between Bob & his listener/callers. It's called "conversation radio" for a very good reason: it's an actual interplay between two human beings, with no feeling of "host"/"caller", but rather of two individuals sharing concepts, concerns, & ideas, without the normal filters of commercial talk programming. It also helps that Bob is very funny, fiendishly clever & can ad-lib an impromptu comic bit @ the drop of a coal-miner's helmet. As if that weren't enough he's also a masterful storyeller, whose ability to keep listeners spell-bound harkens back to the glory days of the great Jean Shepherd.

Bob, along with the great Mike Malloy, Jeff "Batman" Farias, & Randi Rhodes all have a quality which used to be called "soul". They're all genuine human beings who aren't ashamed to wear their hearts on the sleeves ( & pour them into their microphones) & who aren't afraid to kick ass & take names when it's required. If you haven't had a chance to hear Bob yet or Jeff, you're really doing yourself a major disservice. ( I'm assuming that anyone who calls themselves liberal or progressive has already heard Mike & Randi) Bob & Jeff are absolutely the future of this new medium ( i-Radio), figuring it out as they go, & bringing the rest of us with them. And it's going to be an incredible ride!! -Colt

Live, love & ride coasters!

H.O.R.N.

I'm sort of a new-comer to HeadOnRadioNetwork.  I just started listening regularly last year. What opened my eyes and made me a faithful listener was Bob Kincaid and his sincere principals and convictions about mountain-top removal.  He was telling his experience about not eating at a certain restaurant because they had a sign in their window "friends of coal."

The more I listened, the more I learned and enjoyed.

My heart goes out to "Air America Radio," who filed for bankruptcy, then disappeared, however, I had left them quite a while ago because my favorite radio hosts weren't with them any longer. They deserved what they got.  Now, I can recommend the HORN.

The H.O.R.N, is where I can hear truthful, intelligent comments from the callers, who are not hurried to speak in 30 seconds. Talk radio where you really get time to talk; such a novel idea! I hear the real news from the radio hosts, not a 'dishwater,' lukewarm, main-stream media lie. Try www.headonradionetwork.com and you will see what I mean.  It's the "place" for your liberal needs!

Bob Kincaid and the Horn

If it wasn't for Bob Kincaid, I wouldn't have been able to make it through the tail end of the Bush years. Not only is he smart, incredibly articulate and hysterical, he is probably one of the most compassionate voices I've heard on the air.

Keeping the Hillbilly on the hill

Thanks, Buzzflash for this interview.  And thanks to Bob for his relentless effort to bring us Liberal Radio.

There are very few, if any, places that offer such a delightful menu of conversations and subjects.  It is a rare subject that Kincaid can't converse about, in depth.

If you new listeners have mic fright, just give it a try.  We need to hear you voice and support on the H.O.R.N.  Maybe you would only want to chime in on the 'food porn' conversations.

The mining companies are blowing up the mountains, but we are working with a vengence to keep his hill intact.  If you can't listen from 6-9 EST, there is always the archives on White Rose Society.  Thanks to Ben Burch for his work to keep the programs archived.

Come on in, we need to keep Liberal Radio alive.

Kate onthroad

Bob and the HORN

Juanita:  Kate onthroad goes all over the country spreading her help and good will to those who are mostly ignored by others, i.e. Mississippi and Louisiana.

I got to know Kate by listening to dear heart Bob on the HORN.

My  introduction was quite by accident -- one of the good ones.  I was surfing the web and tuned to a leftwing radio station.  I felt impressed to call in and this melodious voice told me it was a rerun.  The melodious voice turned out to be Bob Kincaid.  He let me yammer on, and told me he had started the HORN.

I found out that Guy James from South Florida was broadcasting on the HORN.  Guy had been on a couple of stations in his homebase that were 99.95% rightwing.  He was asked to leave the last station -- that he was paying for.  The majority rightwingers did not want him.   Months went by before he fortunately got on the HORN.

I called in to Guy's show when he was still on the homebased radio station, and once again I was able to call in to him on the HORN thanks to Bob Kincaid.

Anyone afraid to call in to a show, these shows are the ones to help you through your initial shyness.

For now, Guy has not been able to broadcast; however, he and Bob went to Washington DC recently at the health meeting and were able to broadcast from there.  They are two peas-in-a-pod and fun together.  They both like their air conditioners turned on to freezing, and when they eat out, Bob will eat anything but willingly goes to eating places that serve only beef and pork for Guy's sake.

Guy has traveled through his lifetime all through the United States including at one time going to Alaska on a motorcycle.  He recalls all sorts of information about almost anywhere in the USA; he could be a great tour guide in Washington DC according to Bob. And don't call him progressive -- he is a LIBERAL and proud of it.

Bob is so knowledgeable about so many things, and I can almost guarantee he will know what is going on in this world before you do.  If he doesn't by chance he is eager to learn it.  He is so brilliant and well-educated.  He is jovial and also sympatico.  He has a wonderful wife, Agnes, that we can all thank for cooperating and agreeing with Bob to carry out this mission.

There is not big money in this, and Bob relies mostly on modest donations to keep it going.  There are no ads to buy gold, none for how to sell your timeshare, or such ilk.  Bob likes it that way, and so do we.

Bob has listeners all over the world and we love to have them call in.

We have some magnificant callers-in all varied and quite magnificant.

Please start listening especially our fellow liberals who are often starved to listen to others who are like-minded.  If you are on the fence and want to learn the truth tune in and call too.

My hangup with calling in is my southern accent -- it just sounds horrific to me at times.  Bob says he likes for that is what he was raised around.

Sometime I feel I have made such an idiot of myself on air.  I have made myself listen and I change my mind -- I didn't really make a fool of myself.  If I did so what?  I am a liberal and very tolerant.

So folks we welcome you to the HORN, and please call in if only to say hello.  Bob has promised that if he gets more callers he will go up to five hours weeknights.

God speed.

Listening to Bob Kincaids head-on radio show IS real.

It's an open door welcome where you not only hear the personal expression Bob displays in each and every show. Whether it's his passionate efforts against mountain top removal or a road trip . You will find personal interest and /or personal humor all in a community setting.

Bob opens the doors and you feel like you are there. It's not the feel of a man behind a mic , it's the feel of a live visit consisting of personal stories from Bob and his callers and emails read on the air.

Stories and feelings and truth's , up's and down's ALL can relate to coming from all across the US and beyond.

This show is like none other and we need it and more of it . Tune in , take a trip together with like minded people who do care.

Support this show , it is one of the very few left and if we lose this we lose one very important voice we have left.

Staying Sane and Informed

I found Bob Kincaid and The Horn quiet by accident. One of those great accidents. I've been listening every since. Coming up on two years now. With so much insanity coming out of the USA these last 8 sad years, (and sorry if you find that offensive), it's heartening to know that there is one smalll light of sanity and knowledge left. It needs to become a sun.

You'll find out more about what's happening the USA and the rest of the world listening to the HORN then ANY other source I've encountered.

I live in Sydney Australia and will continue to listen, and chip in a few dollars when I can.

If this light goes out, it's over.
