Shirley Sherrod, a Common American of Uncommon Courage, Shows the White House to be Presidential Against Right Wing Media Thugs

w

SHIRLEY SHERROD

As one of our readers and commentators pointed out in an e-mail to us, the Obama White House has, in the past, been highly critical of FOX Fraudcasting for its bias and even boycotted the station for a period of time.

But it is one thing to talk the talk and another thing to walk the walk

The White House may criticize the right wing media, but they react like dogs having their collars yanked whenever one of the Breitbart, Drudge, Limbaugh, FOX, Beck style of right wing character assassination squad goes after an executive branch staffer.  In short, they cave in because of their fear of the right wing white voter, as if those psychotic people are going to support anything about the Obama administration anyway.

So talk is not good enough when your Rahm Emanuel craven fear of the mythical center-right voter actions undercut your spoken words.  In the Shirley Sherrod affair, Andrew Breitbart knew how to make the White House look like fools and the Obama Administration fell for it.  That's the bottom line.

But out of the usual craven D.C. Democratic immediate surrender to falsified right wing accusation routine emerged a heroine from the great pool of common Americans who aren't afraid of the right wing lie machine.  Shirley Sherrod, whose father was shot to death by a white man during the Civil Rights movement, is a specialist in poor rural agriculture who lives in Georgia.  She was summarily fired by the Obama Administration based on yet another selectively edited video by Breitbart.

When the full video was seen, Sherrod stood out as a model of racial tolerance and reaching out to whites.  The Obama Administration had to quickly backtrack and apologize to Sherrod and offer her a new job.   Sherrod was asked to be on several news programs, and she acquitted herself with the kind of aplomb and courage that you would expect from the White House.  You might paraphrase Aaron Copeland and say that Shirley Sherrod is deserving of "fanfare for the common woman."

Too bad, we don have more Shirley Sherrods advising the President and overseeing communications in the White House.  She is much more valuable to beat back the barbarians at the gate than a Rahm Emanuel who flinches and capitulates when the WH is falsely attacked by the right, but has nothing but foul words for the left.

Shirley Sherrod, you more than deserve the BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.

Should Tom Vislack Resign?

A couple of decades or so ago, Clarence Thomas coined the phrase "High-Tech Lynching".  I never gave much credence to his complaining about the opposition to him in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but his phrase "High-Tech Lynching"  has always stuck with me.  And finally, unfortunately, we now have a real example of a "High-Tech Lynching" in what happened to Shirley Sherrod.  I can't think of a better way to describe the nation-wide mob that took after her.  And I think that Tom Vislack was one of the leaders of that mob. Fortunately, the result of a High-tech Lynching is something like the resignation that Shirley Sherrod was forced to do, not the swinging of a body at the end of a rope as happened in Run-Of-The-Mill lynchings like those that were a spectator sport in the southern states between the end of the Civil War and the 1970's.  There are numerous pictures of members of lynch mobs standing around the hanging bodies after the act, all looking proud or something.  A book that contained quite of few pictures of lynchings was published by a couple of antique dealers in Atlanta a decde or so ago. I have/had a copy of it but it's not immediately at hand.  But when I looked at those pictures I couldn't help but hope that some of those mob members had regrets afterward

Vislack's announcement of Sherrod's firing was a self-righteous denunciation that was probably quite similar to the pronunciations of leaders of lynch mobs. Such denunciations don't have to be accurate; what they do have to do is fan the flames of the mob. In the instant case, lots of people totally agreed with Vislach's announcement. Unfortunately, there were members of the mob who agreed with him in the White House, maybe even including Obama. He apparently did not question the allgations against her. He might well have thought that it served her right.  Just like a mob mentality.

And Vislach's announcements after he found out that he had led a mob, that Sherrod was in fact innocent of the charges against her, sound to me like the kinds of Second Thoughts that some members of lynch mobs undoubtedly had,  especially in cases after the act when they found out that the victim of their lynching was innocent. In his announcement of his apology to her, Vislack said something about how he would regret his rash action for a long time to come.  As well he should.  As well he ought to after his resignation or firing from the position of Secretary of Agriculture.

Count me in

I agree with both comments below. Neither Obama nor his advisors seem to retain their male gonads, and neither Obama nor Vilsack have a clue that they really screwed up by allowing Breitbart and FOX to frighten them into rash and ill-considered reaction over unverified falsehoods. If this is the best leadership the administration can offer, then I seriously regret that we don't have the non-confidence vote option.

Needed in the White House: Backbone and Courage

Indeed, the White House needs the courage of Shirley Sherrod! The President needs to act more in the spirit of Frederick Douglass, the Lion of Anacostia. Douglas made a statement that President Obama needs to take to heart: "People who advocate freedom, yet deprecate agitation, are people who want crops without plowing the ground. They want rain without the awful roar of the thunder and lightning. Without struggle, there is no progress. The struggle might be a moral one. It might be a physical one. It might be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle." Perhaps the example of Ms. Sherrod will finally shake up the craven cowards who advise the President. Let us fervently hope so.

How is it...

....  that Sec. Agr. Vilsack still has a job???  He spoke very well when he made his apology to Ms. Sherrod and accepted responsibility for what happened but he failed to TOTALLY do the right thing which was resign.

I read that story in "Rolling Stone" a couple of weeks ago about Gen. McChrystal and the Gen. didn't do anything half as stupid as what Vilsack did.  Does anybody at Ag. Dept. have any confidence in him to do the right thing in the future??  Does the White House, specifically Pres. Obama STILL have any confidence???

Just a pathetic performance!!

Resigning?

Who should resign? Who should be sued for defamation of character? Who did not do the job according to what once was considered an honorable vocation.

How come no mention of Breitbart extracting a few words from a speech given over 20 years ago which gave the complete opposite of the speakers theme?

How come no mention of all those fair and balanced talking heads, either by not doing their duty in reviewing the tape beforehand, or if they reviewed it beforehand then continued the falsification of the speakers intent?

Sherrod should sue, indeed Sherrod should bring criminal charges for falsely maligning her speech and her character against Not so Breitbart and the rest of the dummy talking heads at Fox for continuing the crime.

Where are the honorable media people who diligently do the spade work before they print what has been checked and double checked. And how about the new ruse of trying to lay blame for the Sherrod resignation on the Obama administration for not doing the same due diligence they did not do?
