"Class Warfare" Was Created by the GOP with Unconscionable Tax Cuts for the Wealthy, But the Corporate Media Ignores the Reality

r

CNN

When, according to “punditry conventional wisdom,” CNN is referred to as the “balanced” cable news network by the corporate mainstream media, you know that we have a problem America. CNN is, generally, nothing more than another television outlet that offers the shallowest of reporting buried within a sea of “elite status quo” talking points and superficial analysis of political “process.”

For instance, just last week they let George W. Bush groupie Candy Crowley loose to “analyze” an Obama speech about the economy (a word one of the CNN anchors chose to utter with finger gestures for air quotes around it). What did Crowley have to say? (Watch this video excerpt to hear her in detail.) Quite simply that Obama was engaging in class warfare, which is the Republican talking point every time a Democrat or Independent brings up the redistribution of wealth to the richest in America over the past three decades.

In short, the real story here is the creation of a third-world style wealthy elite and then the rest of America, which is getting further and further behind. This is born out by repeated studies that prove with data that the income gap in America has steadily widened over the past 30 years, reaching its highest point ever as of, well right now in 2010.

The dismaying reality is that the likes of Candy Crowley and the corporate mainstream media won't talk in any detail about the growing class divide and tax cuts for the wealthy because the owners, shareholders, and well-paid on-air television “personalities” benefit from them. The clear messaging of the mainstream media about outrageously large tax cuts for the richest Americans is straight from the GOP Frank Luntz playbook: to discuss them is to engage in class warfare, even though it is the Republican Party, along with help from DLC Dems, who created the rapidly expanding class gulf.

That reducing lavish tax cuts for the wealthy continues to be off the table in the mainstream press and in Congress and the White House is a testament to the far reaching echo chamber that the RNC and ruling elite have created.

All the more reason to return the airwaves to the Americans who own them: the U.S. citizens. The American Revolution overthrew entitlement -- and that revolutionary spirit needs to be restored to the media.

Corporations are nothing but greedy pigs, woefully needing strict OVERSIGHT.

Let's get on the ball and get it done!!!!

too late

The class war is over.  We lost.

As bad as I hate to say it

I agree with you guys, the class war is over and we lost. The worst part about it is that those in our class assist the other side hoping for their fair share which they'll never get.  Damn, I was in a good mood prior to admitting this....

Shock and Awe........

It wasn't a war . . .

it was a massacre!  In a war, both sides fight.

Rich/Corporate Welfare.

Sure hope Gymlock was being snarky. Otherwise, eh/she/it is just plain stupid and braindead.

Reaganism killed the American Dream

The American Dream, that anyone can grow up to make it, even make it big, if they work hard in the US was sold by the Reaganites as the reason to vote for Reagan and support his tax cuts.  However, the data show, that before Reaganism Americans were as socially mobile, as able to climb the ladder from being poor or middle class, as any people on earth.  After 30 years of Reaganistic tax cuts, deregulation, and social service funding cuts, the US is close to being last in the industrialized world in social mobility.  Ironically, the political movement and policies that were sold to the middle class and poor as the way to keep the American Dream alive actually killed it.

Well Said

You cant convince a conservative that their hero is the reason we are heading in this direction.  As Gymlock proves below, they are the most gullible people on the planet.

He went as far as to say, "Thank God Fox News came along to offer some balance in the scheme of things."

I've watched Fox on occasion because when the big stories come out I love to listen to them spin it to the point that it becomes comedy, then I turn it off because I cant take the deception any longer.

Plus, if I want to be lied to I'd just go down to some bar down by the local university and buy some young, vibrant, firm breasted coed a few drinks, ya never know, at least then I may luck up and get something out of the deal.  The only thing I get from Fuax Noise is unbelievable propoganda.

Tax cuts

How can you cut income taxes for those who don't pay them? Certainly tax cuts should go to those who actually pay taxes. Tax the wealthy? Don't you mean tax the high earners? The wealthy have already been taxed on their money. I guess my father was wealthy because in his retirement he was paying taxes on his social security income -- and wasn't that 'after tax' money anyway? Why are businesses taxed anyway? They just consider that a cost of doing business and pass it on. We're not borrowing money to pay for tax cuts; we're borrowing money to give more entitlements. LBJ really got the ball rolling for entitlements with his Great Society in the War on Poverty. He was going to eliminate poverty! Well, here we are over 40 years and a trillion dollars later and we still have the same number of poor!!!! Throwing money at the poor does not work! ENTITLEMENTS DO NOT WORK! The government creates no wealth -- they cannot give someone something without taking it from somebody else!!!!

Thank God Fox News came along to offer some balance in the scheme of things. CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, NPR, CNBC, MSNBC are all admittedly on the left.

If you look at percentage of

If you look at percentage of income, the non-wealthy pay more as a percentage of their total "wealth."  Sales taxes are unavoidable and in my state we have taxes on groceries, fast food, liquor, gasoline, clothing, . . . well you should get the idea.

And it's not "fair and balanced" to present an actual fact and an outright lie on equal footing.  So much for FOX "news."

If you can stand some facts, read Moody's testemony before Congress, Spring 2010.  You have to stick with it.  On page 9 it says, "Extend unemployment insurance for workers who lose their jobs through 2010. Given prospects for a double-digit unemployment rate for much of this year, reinforcing the financial safety net is vital to supporting consumer spending and confidence.x No other federal program provides a bigger bang for the buck in terms of economic activity per federal dollar spent (see Table 2)."

Note the sentence, "No other federal program provides a bigger bang for the buck in terms of economic activity per federal dollar spent (see Table 2)."

Table 2 (see page 10 at the link below) takes some persistence since tax cuts appear first.  For that reason I'm going to show the most bang for the buck first in consideration of those with short attention spans who watch FOX.

Moody's report refutes the preconceived notions that FOX reinforces, but I'm relatively confident that mere fact will not burst your bubble, even when presented by a venerable old Wall Street institution such as Moody's.  And now, back to Steve Doocy  . . ..

ROFLMAO

Entitlements do work gymlock, they worked up until the benefits of the tax system was shifted from the working class to the rich by Reagan.  The "New Deal" which was implemented by Roosevelt after the great depression is the reason this country is where it is today financially.  The interstate highway projects of the 1950's and the "Great Society" initiatives by Johnson saved this country from looking like the West Bank, that is, affluence on one side of the street and people living in alleys on the other.  The economy and the disparity of income didnt take place until rich people's taxes were reduced from 78% down to 30 something percent under your hero.

Oh, let me clear one thing up, the tax rate of 78% was only assesed after the individual earned somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-4 million dollars that year.  Up until then they were taxed right around everyone else, every dollar after that was taxed at the 78% level.  What happened was that CEO's, Board Members, and others in the loop used to take up to that level but leave the rest of the money in the company, that allowed resources to stay in the company so that everyone could be fairly compensated.  That is, the man in the mailroom could take care of his family just like the president of the company.  He may not have had as nice of a house or as nice of a car but he could take care of his family.

Let me take it one step further; everyone reading this blog had a grandfather, great grandfather, or someone they knew who used to work at the local hardware store or department store who worked everyday, the wife stayed home, he paid all the bills, he put his kids through college, he often helped to take care of his parents, and he retired with a pension and didnt have to stuggle to the point where he had to eat cat food to survive.  ALL OF THIS WHILE WORKING AT A SEARS DEPARTMENT STORE FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!!!!  The reason this is no longer possible isnt because of entitlements, these days ended when Reagan became president and shifted the burden from the rich to the working class.  Wives began moving into the workplace just so that their families could keep a modest standard of living.  Not only did Reagan do that but he increased the deficit at that time more than all the other presidents before him combined!!!

Talk about entitlements!!!!

Tax the Crap Out of the Rich

Someone suggested rescinding tax cuts as far back as reagan.  I say let's go even one step beyond that.  Tax cuts started for the wealthy under JFK.  I can't remember how much was cut back then, because I wasn't working or paying taxes yet.  I do remember my great aunt complaining about the amount of taxes she paid prior to this and it was considerable, but she was very, very wealthy.  My thought at the time was, why are you complaining, you have more than enough!

One of the things that I believe should be changed is how the self-employment tax is figured.  Prior to the reagan tax realignment (not tax cut for most of us), self-employment tax (i.e., social security or FICA), was a little over 12%; now, it is 15.3%.  If one makes under the cap, which was around $110,000 for the 2009 tax return, and one is self-employed, then one pays the entire amount.  There is a slight adjustment (8%) so that it isn't quite so painful, and half the total of the self-employment tax is part of the 1040 front page deductions which helps lower the adjusted gross income.

I believe we should go back to the 12% or lower, AND everybody should pay their full amount so that there will plenty of money in the social security trust for future generations.  No 2% payment on everything over the cap, because the wealthy who actually work, end up paying less percentage-wise than someone who pays the full 15.3% and is under the cap.  No cap.

The other thing is that ALL income should be subject to the social security or self-emloyment tax regardless of how it is earned.  In other words, those, who play the stock market (or any investments) for fun and profit, should pay social security.  Since mostly it is the wealthy who do this, they should pay.

All the talk that I hear about a debt commission to look at social security, medicare, medicaid, etc., is scary, because the commission is being co-chaired by Alan Simpson, former republican senator from Wyoming, and Erskine Bowles, former chief of staff under Bill Clinton.  Simpson is well-known for wanting to not just reduce payments of the three programs mentioned, but would like to do away with them altogether.  Bowles was the man who worked with the republican congress in 1997 to produce a balanced budget and a surplus of $230 billion, which was squandered by the bush white house in about 10 minutes.  The reason that I bring this up under this particular commentary is that if we, the people, are not diligent, we will once again be the big losers.  Of course, dumbya tried to tackle social security, and the people said NO.

If everyone paid his/her fair share of social security; i.e., no caps for the wealthy, there would be plenty of money for social security, medicare, and medicaid.  It would help the national debt if the two wars were ended, because they aren't really helping security at home.  The big one is making extreme cuts to pentagon spending, which we all know will go over like a lead balloon with republicans.  Over half the budget goes toward DoD and homeland security, neither of which is making the country safer.  That is just more republican hoopla.

The other thing that needs to be addressed is corporations who have taken jobs offshore, but benefit from the huge loopholes in the corporate tax structure. They need to be paying their fair share, which they aren't.  No corporation should receive a government contract that hasn't been incorporated in this country. The fact that they are not paying their taxes, that they continue to off-shore jobs, should be seen as a crime.

What I wonder, is when will someone have the courage to stand up and do the right thing for the country, which is NOT giving more welfare to the wealthy and corporations, who need it least.

Right On

You nailed it, bro.

Class Warfare

Candy Crowley is a Dumb Ponce!

Candy? Candy?   What is she, a farking Nutty Buddy™?

Class Warfare has existed on this continent since before the founding of the nation.

As far back as the time of the Jamestown Colony only by striking and the economic threat it posed for the elitist Brits did Polish skilled craftsmen win the right to vote in 1619. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1619_Jamestown_Polish_craftsmen_strike.

Shay's Rebellion (whose group were royally screwed by probably one of the most  Elitist Putzen of the Era, Alexander Hamilton. What more proof does one need than that Hamilton is the patron saint of the Federalist society) was put down when wealthy merchants in Boston put up the money for the militia.

The Whiskey Rebellion is another example of the government of the Oligarchic Super Rich against the little people.

During the Civil War, the rich could avoid such messy business as fighting to save the Union by paying the government $300 to draft some poor immigrant or even the poor schmuck immigrant just disembarking off the freaking boat onto the land of the freely exploited.

If there had been a draft, with no college deferments do you think we would have been involve in Iraq War I of Bush I? Pshaw, I say!

Do you think Bush II would have made up the Zionist B.S. about WMDs? In a porcine anus!

Do you think we'd be having America's working class in Afghanifreakingstan. Have you drinking the Aqua Velva again, dude?

The situation in which the U.S finds itself today is because of the on going, never ending class warfare in which an aiding and abettor is our public school educational system which cranks out the most misinformed, disinformed, uninformed, intellectually disabled, dim, dull, and delusional propagandized teenagers of all the advanced nations of the world. America is the North Korea of the Advanced Nations of the world.

This is the result of Class Warfare in which first it was the mercantilists that were the winners and now its Corporatists that are the winners. Unquestioning denial of this fact is constitutes proof.

Plus ça change, plus c’est le même chose!

As Casey Stengel used to say,

"Ya cud look it up."

The Skeptical Cynic doth spake!

It is truly written in the sands of time that...

One must never spit in a man's face.

Tax Cuts for the Rich

Jonnieboy

I believe that all income tax brackets were reduced under the Bush tax cuts, not just the upper ones. Everyone got a tax break that pays taxes. Obama is set to let them all expire, so the middle class that he vowed not to increase taxes on will have their taxes increased.

The problem is that 50% of Americans pay no federal income taxes. Eliminate the federal income tax, and go to a national sales tax for "fairness".

Yet another easily-disproved right-wing distortion

Yes, everyone got a tax break under Dubya. And that's a classic example of a misleading Fox "News" talking point. Here's how that tax break breaks down:

As a percentage of income, the top 1% got a 3.7% break, the next 79% got a 1.7% break, and the bottom 20 percent got a .7% break.

By any objective, rational accounting of these numbers (published by the GAO) that constitutes a tax break for the rich - meaning the top 1%.

The top 1% controlled 23% of the wealth in the country in 1980. Thanks to Reagan cutting the marginal rate, and thanks to Dubya, they now control close to 50% of the wealth.

The top 1%'s income tripled since 1980. Middle class wages have been stagnant since 1980. Trickle down, my ass. Reaganomics was a scam.

The blunt truth of the matter is, Bush's tax breaks favored the wealthy. To dispute that is nothing less than a gross distortion of the facts.

The direct result of Bush's tax breaks on the deficit are clearly shown in this chart, compiled with info from the Congressional Budget Office:

jonnieboy, Yer Fulla Spit

It's forty percent who don't pay income tax, not fifty.

AND....The REASON they don't pay income tax is because they don't earn enough money to pay income tax.

You don't know this !?

And Those folks that don't earn sufficient money to pay income tax most assuredly DO pay FICA, and Social Security payroll tax.

So who are you kidding ?

MOREOVER....under any national sales tax those very people who do not pay income tax now, because of a lack of income, will also be exempt from the national sales tax, because all income up to about $35K, will be exempt from your beloved national sales tax.

Now, jonnieboy, why is it you prefer a national sales tax over the current income tax.

ANSWER:  In a national sales tax the rate an indigent minimum wage (which I'm sure you detest!), working stiff will pay is the same rate that Bill Gates would pay.

That's why you like it.

I notice as well, you put the word "fairness" in quotes.

What'd you mean by that ?

And also, the Bush tax cuts were made into a pre-existing DEFICIT, and with two invasions and occupations that have cost the United States over a Trillion so far, so there WAS no Bush tax cut.

All he did was to make the deficit worse.  Monumentally worse.

Two occupations and invasions, now going on NINE YEARS, at a cost of over a Trillion dollars......PLUS THE HUGE INTEREST WE HAVE TO PAY....Thanks to Bush and his non-existent tax cuts.

The GOP will take both houses of congress.  Obama will not be re-elected.

You will get a senate filled with Palin clones, and a president who is a Palin clone, or Palin itself.

And when it all crashes down, you people will blame liberals, and never admit you did it.

And it will not be pretty here.

At that point there will be hundreds of millions of people who hate your guts, and the guts of the craven dirtbags who did it.

That will happen and there is a better than good hope that all those people suffering fear, privation, loss, and the destruction of all that crap you guys have pitched for thirty years, there is a damn good chance that the veil thrown over the eyes of Joe Sixpack by scumbags like luntz, norquist, limbaugh, hammity, beck, coulter, ingraham, monica crowley, mark levin.....the whole bullshit factory that killed America,....there is a chance these people will realize that they were DUPED...played for CHUMPS.

And they will visit you !

tax cuts for the rich

Well, you're right about one thing, Jonnieboy, Americans who paid taxes got something back from our government which is borrowing heavily from China to support those tax cuts. However, the wealthy who expend more resources than any other class, should be asked to contribute their fair share. Instead, corporations are allowed to incorporate off-shore and avoid paying taxes. Why was Halliburton allowed to incorporate in Dubai and avoid paying taxes on all of the federal contracts it received? The shrinking middle class ends up picking up the slack for them.

My piddling $500 tax rebate would cover the lunch tab for the top one percent who received an incredibly large tax rebate. Your sales tax idea would fall most heavily on the poor. You just can't seem to get over the fact that some people have more resources than others and should be asked to contribute more money towards running our country, building our bridges, putting out fires, testing our waters, inspecting our food, educating our children, etc.

If everyone started out with the same amount of money at birth, then I might be persuaded to your view. Obviously, it ain't true and most wealth is passed from one generation to the next in the same family. This is why Republicans hate the inheritance tax. The Horatio Alger story is a myth perpetuated by the wealthy in order to justify their greed while our country goes bankrupt.

One more thing

I'd venture to say that on a basis of every dollar earned, the rich evade paying taxes on that money by a multiple of a thousand to one than that of poor people.  You're absolutely right when you say that a lot of people dont pay their share of taxes but I've never seen a poor person walk into a CPA's office to try to get his earnings classified as a sub chapter S so that he can avoid paying the IRS.  You greedy morons offend me and my sense of responsibility to my fellow man.  United we stand, Divided we fall!!!

Whatever!!!

All income tax brackets were not "effectively" reduced under Bush, that is the biggest load of BS that's continually propogated.  The fact is, even though taxes appear to be lowered at the federal level, because the coffers are depleted all of the things the federal government used to subsidize at the local level are nonexistent.  Therefore, all other stuff goes up, property taxes, school taxes, sales taxes, etc.  I own a restaurant in Texas, not only have all my taxes gone up, every single organization and group is begging for money because they dont have the benevolence of the local governments anymore.

I even have to pay taxes on stuff I already own; for instance, every table, chair, stove, grill, shelf, etc. is marked at a value and I have to pay a percentage of that value as a tax to the local government EVERY FREAKIN YEAR!!!!!  Additionally, I pay approximately $5000 per month in employee taxes just because I have the "F'n" audacity to employ people.

You stupid conservatives, most of whom arent in the tax bracket of those you protect are fools.  If you want to help reduce the tax burden why dont you really go after the cheats who are killing you, that is, your own stinking party.  The rich pay 15% on dividends yet you pay 30-40%.  Dell Computers (where I used to be employed) pays barely any taxes due to their offshore loopholes and they make billions of dollars a year.  This war, which is nothing more than a boondoggle for the rich and multinational corporations is draining this country dry yet these used condoms on the right side of the aisle block unemployment benefits because they arent paid for.  Well here's a news flash, NOT ONE OF THE IRAQ--AFGHANISTAN SUPPLEMENTAL BILLS HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR OR PAID FOR IN THE BUDGET SINCE THE FIRST BOMB WAS DROPPED, NOT ONE!!!!!  Yet I didnt hear any clamoring to make sure that was paid for prior to okaying the money.

I could go on and on but I'll leave it here for the moment because Im sure you have no answer other than to cry about how the rich suffer at the hands of the man trying to make sure his child has food on the table.

I say lets not stop with the Bush tax cuts, lets rescind the Reagan tax cuts then we'll see these bastards who pay themselves 30 million a year leave the money in the company so that they can pay pensions to people who give 20 or 30 years to the damn company.  At 30 million, that's $14,500 per hour based on a 40 hour work week.  The CEO of United health care makes $104,000 per hour, $836, 000 per day.

Screw you, johnnieboy, the GOP, the Tea Party, and everyone else who believes that what we got going on now is in anyway fair.

Let me leave you with one more thing you damn fool.  The taxes that people who earn more than one million dollars a year will give up should Obama let Bush's tax cut expire exceed the "WAGES" of the bottom 60% of wage earners.  Go look that up and try to justify why we shouldnt let the damn things go back to when it was just a little fairer for the average working man.

an observation

I'd like to see what you wrote rebroadcast in some of our national media, all but the "used condom" remark. I'm thinking that maybe "used diaphragm" might be more appropriate, but hey, that's just me.

Tax the Rich!

The headline from the latest issue of "Green Light" (from the Green Party) was: "Tax the Rich!".  You'd never see one of the two corporate-financed parties saying that.

The Green Party doesn't accept corporate money, so they represent citizens' interests.  If you vote for a Republican or a Democrat, you're supporting a corrupt party that's working against you.

VOTE GREEN!
