George Alan Rekers Wins GOP Hypocrite Award for Working to Deny Gay People Civil Rights While Sneaking Off With 'Rentboy' Cutie

Welcome back to GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

Why is it always the most vehemently anti-gay jerks that turn out to be gay? Well, here at BuzzFlash, we'll never know for sure. But we can say they'll surely be called out in our GOP Hypocrite of the Week Award. 

Surely long-time readers knew this was coming as soon as the news broke about un-gay magician George Alan Rekers being caught with a young male escort in Miami International Airport. Come on, how could we not?

For those who don't know, Rekers just happens to be one of the most prominent anti-gay activists in the nation. He has advised Congress, the White House, and the Department of Health and Human Services on homophobia as well as testifying as a state's witness in favor of Florida's gay adoption ban. Not only is he a founding member of the sanctimonious Family Research Council, but he does his best to rid the world of the scourge of "the gay." As blogger Joe.My.God notes:

Rekers is a board member of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organization that systematically attempts to turn gay people straight. And the Huffington Post recently singled out Rekers as a member of the American College of Pediatricians — an official-sounding outfit in Gainesville that purveys lurid, youth-directed literature accusing gays of en masse coprophilia.

The Rentboy employee, who has been given the moniker of "Lucien" by the news media, went on vacation with Rekers, and the two were returning when they got caught in Miami. Rekers said he hired Lucien because he had just had surgery and needed help with his bags.

OK, likely enough story. But wait! Here are pictures of Rekers handling his own luggage at the airport, while his boy toy looks on. Furthermore, Rekers admitted that he hired "Lucien" from a male escort site called RentBoy.com, a site where you have to click through an adult content user agreement in order to even view the contents.  

Perhaps realizing the implications of hiring his (ahem) personal assistant from a male escort site, Rekers is now denying what he at one time confirmed. But, as the folks at Talk 2 Action note it's a little too late for retractions, now that Lucien is talking: 

Professor George, as he likes to be called, states on his web site, that contrary to the New Times report, he did not find his escort through Rentboy.com, (even though the rent boy himself confirmed it to the New Times) and that he did not have sex with that man. But the story is unlikely to go away any time soon, the efforts of the organizations with which he is most affiliated, not withstanding.  The New Times  reports that the religious right organizations with which he is affiliated are ducking the story; Box Turtle Bulletin reports that the University of South Carolina has erased Rekers from its web site; and the Miami New Times reports on their new  interview with "Lucien" in which he discloses what Rekers was paying for...

You can be sure that this creep will continue carrying water for the conservative anti-gay crowd. The saddest thing is that the psycho will probably continue "shaping you child's sexuality" (which is to say telling young gay people to renounce their identities, unless of course, he's hired them to "carry his luggage"). Meanwhile, untold numbers of normal, loving gay couples can't adopt children thanks to Rekers' efforts.
