Michael Steele Wins Our GOP Hypocrite Award for Playing a Bait-And Switch Game With the Race Card

Michael Steele

Welcome back to GOP Hypocrite of the Week.michael steele in college

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele has had a tough couple of weeks. In fact, his entire tenure as top dog at the RNC has been riddled with goofs, gaffes and boners.

With the latest snafu involving spending donor money on a bondage club outing (only months after he insulted donors' motives and intelligence in official documents), we at BuzzFlash almost felt sorry for the guy.

And then, instead of taking responsibility for his rocky reign, he appeared to blame it on his racist friends in the GOP. In an interview on Good Morning America, Steele suggested that his difficulties come from the fact that as an African-American he has a slimmer margin for error than another GOP chair might.

Now, it may well be true that Steele has had a more difficult time as the RNC's first black chairman. But of course, while Steele is happy to extend this courtesy to himself, he's quick to slam any Democrat who says they've had a tough time because of their race.

Steele targeted Jimmy Carter when the former president suggested that the backlash President Obama was experiencing had to do with racial prejudice:

Blind charges of racism, where none exist, not only are an affront to those who have suffered the effects of racism, but it weakens our efforts to address true acts of racism and makes them more difficult to overcome.

and then he went after congressional Democrats:

I'm kinda sick and tired of the left and Democrats in this country when they get in trouble and don't get their way and their backs are up against the wall on legislation or whatever it is their trying to do, they go to that card, they play that race card, that slavery card, that civil rights card.

Not only is Steele quick to play the race card whenever he's in trouble, but he's willing to stretch the truth pretty far in order to do so. In a piece titled "Michael Steele Doesn't Race-Bait, Except When He Does," the Washington Independent sums up a ridiculous complaint by Steele about Democrats hurling racial slurs at him thusly:

[Rep. Steny] Hoyer said that Steele “slavishly” supported the Republican Party, and Steele called this a racist comment while Republicans rounded up spokesmen to call Hoyer a racist. Three years later, Steele claims that he was “called a slave” by Hoyer, and that “no one seemed to think that that was racist at the time.”

Perhaps the most galling thing is when Steele insists that he doesn't play the race card, often right before or after he has explicitly done so.

So, while it's clear that Steele is more than willing to play the race card when it suits him, he still hasn't been successful with it. What about his race explains his need to charge exorbitant speaking fees for appearances when other chairmen have considered this part of the job? And if he were truly sensitive to other peoples' racial biases, would he really have used an offensive phrase such as "honest injun"? Would a guy who was not trying to capitalize on the color of his skin talk about "how he likes to 'wear my hat backwards, you know, because that’s how we roll in the Northeast'; and how he has 'slum love' for Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA)"?

We think not. And that's why Michael Steele is BuzzFlash's GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.

Steele Use of 'Race Card" Isn't His First

The fact is, it's not the first time that Michael Steele has used the "race card" against his critics inside the GOP. Before his interview with ABC News that you cited, Steele had an interview last November with CNN's Roland Martin on Martin's syndicated TV show "Washington Watch," in which the GOP national chairman said point-blank that white Republicans were "scared of me."

And, it turns out, Steele's fiercest and most relentless critic inside the GOP is a fellow African American: Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who, appearing on Neil Cavuto's Fox News show, called Steele's use of the race card "ridiculous."

Blackwell went on to predict that President Obama "will be defeated" in the 2012 election.

I've got a newsflash for Mr. Blackwell: If the GOP puts Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann at the top of their 2012 ticket -- which could very well happen, given the mounting threat the Tea Party movement poses to the GOP (Don't be surprised if a lot of GOP incumbents lose to Tea Party insurgents in the upcoming primaries) -- not only will Mr. Obama win re-election, he'll win it by a landslide.

Michael Steele

As a resident of Maryland, I am very familiar with both Steny Hoyer and Michael Steele.  Let me state unequivocally that Steny Hoyer is absolutely not a racist, and has in fact been in the forefront of the battle for equal rights his entire life.

Michael Steele is not very bright.  He was selected by Bob Erhlick to run for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland on the Republican ticket solely because he is black.  Think Clarence Thomas.  Steele had no knowledge and no interest in any issues in Maryland when he ran, nor in the term he served.

Republicans have only a tiny pool of blacks to choose from in selecting candidates.  They try to pick the dumbest ones, so that when they screw up, Republican racist views will be confirmed.  I have seen this happen over and over again, not just in politics.  There were thousands of blacks who would make great Supreme Court Justices, yet the Republicans picked Clarence Thomas, because he confirmed their view that blacks are inferior.  Erhlick chose Steele as his running mate for the same reason, as did the RNC.

In employment situations I have witnessed the same thing.  Under pressure to add at least one black to an all white male management team, usually the dumbest black is chosen.  If they chose one of the hundreds of smart blacks available, people might realize that blacks are as smart as whites.  Picking the dumbest one confirms the racist views of those in power.

17th Ammendment

Can you believe, back before the 17th Ammendment, Michael Steele might have been appointed as a Senator.  Losing an argument with a Republican over affirmative action or Democracy is now optional-only, because you can just say "Michael Steele".
