Jim Bunning is Our GOP Hypocrite for Flip-Flop-Flipping on Unemployment Benefits During the Worst Recession in Decades

Welcome back to BuzzFlash's GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

Finally, Sen. Jim Bunning is a household name for a reason other than baseball! The former pitcher made waves this week when he blocked the extension of unemployment benefits, even though his fellow Republicans largely opposed the obstruction.

Bunning positioned himself as taking a principled stand to uphold Pay-Go, the legislation that requires Congress to show how it is going to pay for everything it legislates.  In an op-ed explaining why he "took a stand" in USA Today Wednesday, Bunning explained his timing:

Many people asked me, "Why now?" My answer is, "Why not now?" Why can't a non-controversial measure in the Senate that would help those in need be paid for? If the Senate cannot find $10 billion to pay for a measure we all support, we will never pay for anything.

And of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that he's a Republican positioned against Democratic leadership in Washington. But wait, what happened back when Republicans were in power? Well, it turns out it's way more fun to hold up legislation when the Democrats are in charge. From Think Progress:

In recent days, Sen. Jim Bunning has been obstructing the passage of a bill that would extend unemployment benefits for nearly a million Americans, claiming that they aren’t “paid for.”

But in 2003, Bunning not only voted for an unemployment extension but also put out a glowing press release lauding the extension of unemployment benefits as “hopeful news for our most needy families in Kentucky.“

...If Bunning’s stance today is truly principled, then why didn’t he stand up to fight the unpaid-for benefits in 2003, under the Republican President Bush?

Bunning changed his mind after a few days of bad press and lifted his hold on the unemployment benefits extension. The most amusing part of his decision was his explanation for it. In trying to blame his acquiescence on the Democrats' parliamentary procedure, he said, "Hypocrisy again rules the day in Washington."

Whaa? Is Bunning admitting that his obstruction of the democratic process only when Democrats are in power is hypocritical? Or does he see hypocrisy in the fact that he would go back on his "principled" stand after only a few days of negative press?

Who knows? The Republican mind is a mysterious, duplicitous place. And Jim Bunning's is no exception, which is why he's our GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

So the dems passy Paygo that says everything must be paid for with either a cut in spending or an increase in taxes.  Republicans vote against it because they don't want taxes increased.  Bunning comes along on the job bill and says, "ok, you passed Paygo, now pay for this."  And he is the hypocrite?  He is pointing out democrat hypocrisy!  MORON.
