A Model of Social Progressives and Labor Working Together -- Keystone Progress, PA -- Wins the BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award

Keystone Progress

At a time when many progressives have retreated into a malaise about the pace of change under a Democratic President and Congress, the statewide powerhouse advocacy organization -- Pennsylvania Keystone Progress -- and allied unions are empowering citizens at the grassroots level. If a democracy responds to the will of the people, then change begins with active and passionate involvement at the grassroots level of those who seek to advance the common good.

On January 29 and 30th, Keystone Progress organized the "Progressive Summit 2010" in Harrisburg, in conjunction with the Service Employees Union (SEIU), and the PA AFL-CIO, as well as numerous other progressive and union groups. Not only did nearly 600 people enthusiastically attend, but the gathering was a model of celebrating the common values shared by social progressives and the labor movement.

That is an achievement in itself, since the Republicans have picked off many working class and labor members on the basis of social wedge issues, but you wouldn’t sense that schism at the "Progressive Summit" for PA. Keystone Progress has shown that while many of us bemoan the gridlock in D.C., local progressive activists can be galvanized through determined and skillful organizing, with unions and working people as committed partners.

BuzzFlash, although based in Chicago, was in attendance because we were invited to be on a panel concerning a subject of great interest to us: finding common ground between social progressives and the working people of America. What we saw at the conference was enthusiasm for the future and a "get it done" progressive spirit without any of the GOP-induced divisions.

For serving as a statewide model of populist action for the common good, Keystone Progress of Pennsylvania receives this week’s BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.

social security

As time goes by,our society encounter many problems.We faced different issues and it brought about lots of changes.But of course,we surpass those challenges!I'm glad that we achieved the fruit of our labor.If we have a nation that will be our strong foundation,it will probably contribute in the fast progress and development.As we are working we need to secure ourselves for the future.We need to have our social security that will help us have our own money as we grow old.We're not getting any younger!If there is one thing that people that are just becoming or are on the cusp of becoming seniors need to be a little concerned with it's Social Security, if they had intended to rely on Social Security benefits at all.  It's projected that the Social Security fund will be start to see smaller returns by 2016, and will start to drift into the red by 2037 – the next government program that will need payday loans,probably from China.  Workers can draw full benefits by age 65 – and with a lot of baby boomers having that on the not too distant horizon, something should be done sooner rather than later.
