For Ignoring U.S. History of Slavery in Favor of His Own Judeo-Christian Heritage, Steve King Wins BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite Award

Steve King
Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.
After being the only "no" vote on a measure to erect a plaque in the new Congressional Visitor's Center (CVC) recognizing the fact that slave labor was used to construct the Capitol building, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) was the odd one out. But King has a reputation of being a contrarian, so not much was thought of it.
That is, until King's insecurity got the better of him and he decided to put out a press release explaining his vote. It's not that he's racist, folks, it's that he wanted to protect the Judeo-Christian heritage of these United States!
A portion of King's statement, thanks to Eric Kleefeld at Talking Points Memo, emphasis ours:
Last night I opposed yet another bill to erect another monument to slavery because it was used as a bargaining chip to allow for the actual depiction of "In God We Trust" in the CVC. The Architect of the Capitol and liberal activists opposed every reference to America's Christian heritage, even to the extent of scrubbing 'In God We Trust' from the depiction of the actual Speaker's chair in the U.S. House of Representatives...
Our Judeo-Christian heritage is an essential foundation stone of our great nation and should not be held hostage to yet another effort to place guilt on future Americans for the sins of some of their ancestors. Christian abolitionists gave their lives by the hundreds of thousands to end slavery. Great American leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worshipped God just as our Founding Fathers did. We must never forget this important aspect of our heritage or use it as a political bargaining chip.
No, We must Never Forget our Founding Fathers!
King insists the plaque was being used as a "bargaining chip" by the godless libruls who insist that if the Republicans want "yet another" Judeo-Christian reference built into our government structures, the least we could do is explain to school children the meaning of the name of the CVC's Emancipation Hall.
Gasp! What next? Reparations? A "We're Sorry For Enslaving People" declaration on the dollar bill? Nope, we'll just keep that "In God We Trust" stuff on there, thank you.
The idea that this nation is in danger of forgetting our Judeo-Christian roots is laughable. On the other hand, how many people know that the capital of this country -- indeed the White House itself -- was built by slaves?
The idea that King would use the fact that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Christian to make his vaguely racist point is just low. Sure, Rev. King was Christian, but was he not also the descendant of slaves?
Rep. King needs to get over his white male superiority complex. It's just a plaque and furthermore, it's the plain truth.
For blustering about his own endangered heritage as a Christian white male while attempting to deny the representation of others at our nation's capital, BuzzFlash bestows upon Rep. Steve King this week's GOP Hypocrite of the Week Award. Oh, sorry, Steve; we're fresh out of plaques, so this Web page will have to do!
Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon.

Judeo-Christian
So here we go again...another fundie who thinks things would be just dandy if we plastered religious icons all over the place. Of course the ten commandments are the bedrock of our society - they are the essential rules of practically every human society.
Even if the landscape were littered with crucifixes and the ten commandments posted in every classroom...would anything change? The Conquistadors brandished crosses as they slaughtered the Aztecs, Incas, Mayas.
Also, the quote from the Des Moines Register where King describes his admiration for Joseph McCarthy seems to have been removed - go figure.
