Mitt Romney wins GOP Hypocrite of the Week for suddenly caring about budget deficits

Mitt Romney

Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

For Mitt Romney, national deficits didn't matter under Reagan and Bush, but only became of concern when Obama assumed office.

As ThinkProgess.org details, Romney seems to have forgotten that Bill Clinton left the U.S. in great fiscal shape. Instead, the Mittster has long championed the Dick Cheney view that "Reagan proved deficits don't matter," because tax cuts and war come first.

So, it's a little hypocritical -- to say the least -- for Romney to tell a talk show host: "There is a perspective on the part of some in Washington that budgets don't matter, that deficits don't matter, that debt doesn't matter, but the reality is that not only at some point does someone have to pay for it, and that's something we've all been saying for years."

Actually, Romney is condemning himself, given his support of adding hundreds of billions of dollars to the national debt under George W. Bush.

Romney is being consistent with other D.C. Republicans who ran the deficit up under Bush until it broke into the stratosphere, but on January 20, turned into stern, lecturing deficit hawks.

As ThinkProgress.org notes:

Though the Obama administration's budget does increase deficit spending in the near term, the goal is to "cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term." This is a sharp contrast from Reagan's near tripling of the deficit over his presidency and George W. Bush's conversion of a $236 billion surplus when he took office into the $1.2 trillion deficit he passed to his successor.

Yes, that is sure some change of position the Mittster has taken since being a loyal Bushevik.

And for that 180-degree turnabout, Mitt Romney is named the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.

This is the third HOTW Award for Mitt Romney. He also won the award on February 8, 2008 and December 15, 2006. You can see a list of all previous nominees here.

Romney

So then, in other words, Romney shouldn't have had any say-so either way, since he wasn't a Senator at the time of the Bush administration, etc. In other words, he should keep his mouth shut, since he has not been and is not in a position to help.

CherMoe

Well then your logic says that you should keep your mouth shut since you are not in a position to help and are not part of the Obama administration. No, you have a right to your opinion and he has a right to his. He has a better position though, since he did balance the Massachusetts state budget.

Nice Try

I guess you didn't know that Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts. He was not a member of congress nor part of George Bush's staff. How you relate Mitt Romney to George Bush's budget is a mystery. Mitt Romney came into office inheriting a 3 billion dollar state deficit. He balanced the budget without raising taxes and had a surplus during the rest of his term. I guess you are really desperate for a hypocrite. Maybe you should look at a senator named Christopher Dodd. He's a senator from Connecticut who has received $281,038 from AIG since 1989. The top recipient of AIG contributions. Or you could try Timothy Geithner. He wants to go after people using tax loopholes, yet he couldn't pay his own taxes. I could go on and on. You know: So many Democrat hypocrites, so little time.

Sons of Mitt

During the presidential campaign Mitt's strapping sons were too busy helping with the campaign to join the US military. Campaign is long over boys. Can I introduce you to a recruiter?

Heh heh, no we dont need any

Heh heh, no we dont need any virtuous hard working rich upper crust folks to do the duty - I mean the dirty work - intended by God for the lower classes. What is a rich upper crust luxury-deserving American going to do with benefits from the GI Bill and the VA? Mitts sons can keep stuffing their faces with boxes of eclairs, 12 at a time, working hard to stuff their face with those eclairs - havent the rich hard working upper crust conservative folks given enough already??
