For a degrading, violent, racist cartoon against President Obama, New York Post is the Media PUTZ

BUZZFLASH MEDIA PUTZ OF THE WEEK

c

February 19, 2009

New York Post

For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America.

Political cartoons are meant to be expressions that aren't for the tame. A political cartoon that is too nice probably isn't doing its job.

But there are certain lines where political cartoons should not go, and the New York Post crossed that line on Wednesday.

The cartoon is of two policemen standing over a chimp lying on the ground shot to death. The cop who isn't holding the gun says to the cop holding the gun, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

We're told that the theme is related to an incident in Stamford, Connecticut this week where a woman was attacked by a popular pet chimpanzee. Ultimately, a cop shot and killed the chimp.

Even if you were aware of the chimp story (and that's a stretch), you still have to ask "and this relates to the stimulus package how?"

The disturbing part of the Sean Delonas cartoon is that it can be seen as degrading on multiple levels. The cartoon could be racist, comparing the first African-American president of the United States to an ape, long a favorite image among racists. Or it could be political -- that an ape wrote the legislation. Or writing a stimulus package correlates to a likelihood to attack someone.

The cartoon isn't funny or poignant and doesn't even has a clear message. It's offensive on multiple levels, depending on one's vantage point -- without redeeming value.

In response, New York Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy."

To summarize Allan, the effort to revive an extremely sick economy is comparable to a chimpanzee on the loose who attacks a woman and the policeman, using life-extinguishing brutal force, represents the GOP leaders in the House. Or is it the right-wing media to the rescue with a gun?

This isn't the first time Delonas has come under controversy. This blog entry notes that Delonas ripped off his own work, and was even lazy in doing so.

And then there's this lovely collection of his tasteless, gay-bashing (among other groups), degrading political cartoons.

There is also a question about talent: Delonas, being obsessed with gay-bashing, draws former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey as if he looks like Barack Obama. McGreevey and Obama look nothing alike.

It's not like the New York Post is known for taste or decorum anywhere in its ink-stained, tabloid, "I need a shower after I read it" pages. And there is a certain expectation that cartoons will occasionally be tacky. But a violent, degrading cartoon without a funny or relevant analogy is going far too far, and so we name the New York Post the Media PUTZ of the Week.

BUZZFLASH MEDIA PUTZ OF THE WEEK

Obama Cartoon

Yep, chill out people! It's about time, I'd say, "if the shoe fits, then wear it!"...If your offended by this it's because you have been "conditioned" your entire life & you're part of the problem! the news is suppose to express views & interpreted in any way you choose. If you don't like reading it, put it down! Just like the TV, turn it off! Cartoonist is BRILLIANT, at least the cartoonist a critical thinker! We need more laughs!

Has there ever been a time

Has there ever been a time in history when a cartoonist has depicted the death of a president in any way shape or form… FUNNY! HE WAS SHOT 3 TIMES! and as him being represented as a monkey, what kind of comparison could you possibly draw besides black people being called monkeys for a long time (because he obviously does not come off dumb like Bush did). This is not funny at all, this is just wrong. And if you think this is just my opinion than your opinion would have been the same as white crakers in the south who believed slavery was okay. BLACK POWER

"if the shoe fits, then wear it!"???

i'm not offended by this but i don't mind people that are, and you shouldn't be either. why don't you spend less time telling people about how they are wrong for their beliefs, dickhead.

and what's with your statement that the news is supposed to express views, shouldn't it express facts? isn't that the problem with the news today, too much bullshit and not enough real issues.

and lastly, the cartoon isn't funny, which is usually the case with political comics. i'd rather read family circus...and i hate family circus.

one last thing, you suck at spelling and you suck even more at life.

over-sensitivity perhaps?

chill out people.. nobody complains about monkey cartoons of george bush. i didn't find this racist at all. lets face it: we make fun of presidents... black or white.. or mixed. who the hell cares.

bush is white.

white people aren't called monkeys by black people, if we were then the bush/monkey pictures would have been highly offensive. nice try though.

Tolerance

I won't address the cartoon because it says lots of different things to different people: If African Americans are upset by this cartoon, they have every right to be. If there are other people who think the cartoon was a joke and that upset people need to lighten up, then those people have a right to that opinion as well. One thing I did want to say though is that the word tolerance, when used in regard to race relations, represents a poor choice of words (I know it's semantics, but follow me here). Well intentioned people on both sides of the racial divide have said that all people need to be "more tolerant of one another," as if being more tolerant would be a good thing for black and white people. On the contrary, I would say tolerance is a horrible word choice and has no place in a discussion intended to bring people together. What does tolerance mean? Tolerance, or to tolerate, means to put up with someone or something. When our children are engaged in undesirable behaviors we let them know, "i won't tolerate this sort of behavior any more," to say that we're not going to put up with the negative behavior any more. In essence then, when we say we need more tolerance from both sides of the racial divide we're saying that we (black people and white people) need to "put up with another!" I know it's semantics, but the word choice here, I believe, is very important. We don't need to tolerate one another and I have no tolerance for someone who would use the word tolerance in relation to ending racism! What we need is more understanding and increased fellowship among men and women of all races... not tolerance. Tolerance is stupid and it's a stupid word when used to describe what we need to solve racism and prejudice. White people need a better understanding of themselves and of white privilege, to understand how their race has gotten to where it has. This added understanding, especially in the area of white privilege and how white privilege has affected other races, would provide the foundation from which white people can learn the story of the African American. Learning about the experiences and stories of African Americans from ancient Africa to the present day, would then lead to greater understanding of why we are the way we are. Learning and understanding of one another's stories are the keys to unity, not tolerance...we don't need to put up with one another...we need to understand one another first and then move to love and fellowship. p.s. It's February... Put an end to Black History Month!!! Black History Month is just another form of segregation!!! The history of black people is part of human history and part of American history. Why then shouldn't documentaries that focus on Africans or African Americans not be part of regular history oriented programming? I thought segregation was put to an end in the 1960's. However well intentioned the people who created Black History Month may have been, they have effectively segregated/separated the history of an entire people from the rest of the history of the world! I watch a lot of History Channel, Military Channel, Discovery, etc. To start, you wouldn't even know it was Black history Month by looking at any of these stations because the African American oriented programming during this month has been sparse at best (most of the programming has been on Abraham Lincoln and his affect on African American history). Why is it that for 11 out 12 months the history channels focus on Hitler or how things are made? Hitler gets 11 out of 12 months and black people get 1 freaking month!?!?!?... Thanks a lot!!! If black history is part of American and human history shouldn't documentary programming that focuses on black people be part of the regular programing line up throughout the year??? - just a few thoughts from an enlightened white person... If you thought I must be black while reading this, you're prejudiced and have a lot to learn :-)

I think it's time

To strip murdoch of his American citizenship, and pack his sorry ass back to Australia, that is, if they'll have him.

Impressed

I have to say that I am extremely impressed that this cartoonist was able to be offensive in so many ways using just one frame. He was able to personally insult the president, insult an entire ethnic group and anyone who cares about anyone in that ethnic group, promote political assasination, offend people who don't think it's funny to see animals shot, make light of a very unfortunate and sad situation involving the real life chimpanzee and the woman he attacked, and insult law enforcement. Bravo sir. You are an inspiration to bloviating assholes everywhere.

President Obama as a dead chimp is not the same

Bush was called a chimp, How in the world is this the same. Think, use your brains, comparing bush to a chimp has not the same meaning. A dead chimp at that. If you just think a little bit. The cartoon reads like this. Obama is an ignorant beast who should be killed for his ignorance by the police no doubt who are pledged to protect us. I am never amazed at the depth of some Caucasian thinking. This cartoon plants a seed, a seed, of assassination. Read in it what you wish. Call it hurting itty bitty feelings if you wish. Many Caucasian people have been hurting peoples itty bitty feelings for a long time. Maybe that is the point most of you believe that other peoples feelings are itty bitty in your eyes. Planting a seed to kill out first black president is not itty bitty.
Attacks like this remind me of the fact that Americans need to be given a true history of black people. We are the first in civilization ask your scientists. Don’t make any many mistakes about it. If the contributions of blacks in this country were taken back this would be a bleak place. I will not go into detail. All you have to do is research. As a matter of fact, history tells us that the European people were unlearned until they started to travel and come into contact with the darker peoples of the Earth such as the Egyptians, the people of Timbuktu in Africa, the Phoenicians and other peoples of the Earth near the Mediterranean Sea. This is not an attack it is the truth. Maybe if people spent more time learning the truth of our people which is not readily printed they would not degrade themselves with such representations as this cartoon. I do not even need to mention the greatness of our President Barak Obama his greatness speaks for itself. Learn and study and change your view of a people which many have tried to color in a false way. Is the stimulus bill good, who knows, did President Obama cause this problem no. Is the cartoon justifiable absolutely not. Does something need to be done yes and very fast. There other civilized ways of expressing disagreement. Don’t do it by dropping seeds of assassination enough black leaders have been assassinated. Sean Delonas should use his so-called education to teach and uplift while expressing his views or maybe his solution to disagreement is Murder. Enough said.

I am sick of all this whining!

You sir.may have this ridiculous notion that the chimp in this cartoon is Mr.Obama, but i say nay,This is a statement about the stimulus bill,or people looking to make something from nothing.correct me if I'm wrong but the constitution is still in affect unless A GOVERNMENT OFFICAL,WITH DIRECTION FROM A LEECH LAWER instructed that the right to free speech is void.this cartoon only denotes THE FREEDOM OF OPINNION as in your case of "assassination", preposterous. No one is trying to take anything away from the african american, because i know for a fact that BLACK males of times past have fought for our freedoms regardless of the persecutions of society, for ex. revolutionary war,PRESIDENT LINCON,ASSASINATED FOR FREEING THE BLACK AMERICEN WHO SERVED FOR ONE YEAR IN THE UNION ARMY.Mrs.TRUMIN pushed her husband to letting the black american fight in world war one,the tuskegee airman.AND THAY FOUGHT VALIENTLY. So,To close I am offended by your frivolus use of terms such as"assasination" and"murder".These are your OPINION'S nothing more.

shut up

your argument is typical of secret racists everywhere.

equal

wow! like to blow things out of proportion much? even if it was racist, it was funny. im not racist, but racial jokes are funny. even though i dont think this was racist at all. if someone says a monkey could do a better job to a white person no body would think anything of it, but oh no, if you say it about an "african american" it makes it racist?!?!? im confused. i though everyone was equal. if we're all equal then we can all be made fun of equally

I am white and just cannot

I am white and just cannot find any humor at all in this. If you don't think that this is racist than you are not only stupid, but ignorant. It figures that this was done by a loser Conservative. I would never read that paper if you paid me, but I'm sure it's quite popular with richy white bastards and the ignorant right wing. Well guess what? You lost, WE elected a Black President. You are a disgrace to humanity. I think this person should be put in prison for promoting such filth. I just wish these people would quit spreading their desease of racist and hateful views. They will all get their's when they meet their maker. May you rot in hell.

Racist

I really think you should re-read your response You are a Hypocrite and an Idiot.I am a republican and do not appreciate your hateful insults and I am not a racist. I back our president and do not hate the people who voted for him. Wake up you are no different than the the ignorant person that drew the picture. You are full of hate. May you rot in hell too. Lets hope for peace, Two wrongs never make a right. You are narrow minded. Think again.

Rot in hell

Let us at this time of strife in our country remember the words of the bible "Judge not lest ye be judged." How about "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." The Bible teaches us tolerance not hate, Love not indifference. Those in this world will be judged on their actions in this word when they reach the next world.

you're stupid

that cartoon was not funny in any kind of way. U must be a dumb ass white person? Now did u like that? Was that funny enough for u idiot? Doesn't feel good now does it. Racial jokes aren't funny. Wat if i called u a stupid ass cracker would u like that. Ur such a dumbass

stupid ass cracker

as a white guy I would think that was rather funny.

excuse your ignorance!

For your better understanding, you must grasp the concept of the word 'monkey' in comparison to african american. Black people were consider chimps and called animals for years but we must excuse your ignorance for u do not have the knowledge to understand different perceptions.

Idiocy

Guess what? People who think "racial" (read: racist) jokes are funny ARE racist. You clearly are cluless to history. Blacks have long been compared to monkeys which translates to mean, unintelligent, not human, animalistic. Saying a monkey could do a better job than a White or Black person isnt racist, nor is it the point of the cartoon, look again, maybe then you wont be confused. It is wrong and insensitive to parody a person's heritage with derogatory images that are hurtful, and that have been used to make folks feel less than human, even "african americans" as you used in your comment...not racist much?

Jokes are funny

All jokes are funny. Some may be in bad taste. I think some of the funniest jokes I have ever heard are ones about dumb white boys. Yeah I am a dumb white boy. When a joke becomes harmful is when the person saying the joke believes the joke reflects the way reality should be. I mean seriously I heard a joke about a disaster. Whats the definition of a disaster? the first time I heard it was a bus load of lawyers going over a cliff with two empty seats. What's the disaster? there could have been two more lawyers on the bus. haha we all think it is funny. Did lawyers scream in outrage? No! Because on it is just a joke to relieve stress. Two Lawyers haven't ever been slaves, and Three, no one ever seriously thinks about putting lawyers in a bus and putting it over a cliff. Now change lawyer to Jew, or blacks, or Latin Americans and a portion of the population gets in an uproar over it. a friend I used to work with that happened to be of Mexican decent told me a joke about Mexicans. and it was funny. Think about the person saying the joke before you jump to the racism idea. If you are black and don't have any white friends cause you don't trust them does that make you a racist? Now if I said that I didn't have any black friends cause I don't trust them I would be a racist. I have black friends by the way. I believe that calling it a race issue is wrong as well as inaccurate. We are one Race, Human. I will never have a squirrel as a girlfriend or as my wife. Does that make me racist? Sure I sleep with a dog, but only cause I can't get her to sleep on the floor. But Black, White, Asian, Latino, Mediterranean, Indian, Native American doesn't matter. God whatever one you believe in is love, tolerance, and respect. He is not hate. We are all his children. We are a gift to one another not a bane or stigma. Jokes are jokes, people are people. the two do not make the other.

wtf???

all jokes are funny? carrot top anybody, jay leno? that's the dumbest shit i've ever heard. bury your head in the sand.

equal

White people cant make comments like that about black people because they werent slaves long ago. Yes we are equal but because of history you cant say certain things to blacks or make certain jokes unless you yourself are black. It is insensitive.

You are a racist! Blacks

You are a racist! Blacks make fun of whites all the time and everyone laughs, quit being such a puss.

For ur info

I am BLACK and i have WHITE people in my family and i dnt talk about white people so u need to rethink things before u say them. U must be racist

No: you are an idiot.

Blacks were brought to this country to be exploited as slaves against their will! Whites making fun of blacks is not the same as blacks making fun of whites. Excuse me, you assh***. Blacks have a right and a very good reason to make fun of stupid whites- like you- if they want to. Go and laugh. It won't make you intelligent.

Equality for all

My generation of whites had nothing to do with slavery. It was wrong period....So why is it O.K. For blacks to insult me????? Lets all treat each other fair. Lets move on already enough is enough. Black rappers insult whites all the time. It is offensive.

but...

aren't you saying that black people are too sensitive? why are you so sensitive about rap lyrics? get over it crybaby.

everyone has the right to say what they want, but i also think we have the right to punch that person in the face. don't let anyone tell you that you can't say something, but if you're talking crazy shit don't be surprised when you get the fuck beat out of you.

WOW

Would you just step back and read what you just wrote?

The man behind the cartoon

Who is this cartoonist who hides behind drawings that spring from his head? I have spent an hour trying to get a little info on Sean Delonas and have come up with nothing more than his name, the NY Post chimp/stimulus news, a little piece claiming Delonas draws a lot of homophobe cartoons and a few newspapers he worked for. How old is this guy? What is his education? Where is he from? Personally, I'd like to know a little about a twisted mind that creates such hatred. Was he raised in the south? Was he raised by racist parents? What makes up the character of person like this? As an Art Major, my studies also included Political Cartoons. I can tell you that Political Cartoons depict a point being made most times with a tinge of humor, but more importantly, they are not to be tasteless or offensive. If they do come across as offensive, the cartoon is rejected by any editor who is worth his/her salt. This cartoon is an embarassment to legitimate and award winning political cartoonists and he is not listed among the notables. Clearly, this cartoonist is the arm pit of the Political Cartoon world.

Chimps and racism

1. The killing of the chimp in CT had nothing to do with politics or racism. A 250 lb wild animal, being kept as a pet, attacked a woman and injured her severely, and was shot by the police.

2. So connecting the chimp with the stimulus bill wouldn't make any sense if it weren't for the fact that Obama is black and a chimp is a common derogatory symbol for blacks.

3.Remember how then Sen. George Allen's race for reelection in 2006 was sunk by his calling a dark-skinned South Asian Indian reporter "macacca"? Allen claimed not to be aware that this was a racial slur, but that wasn't believable. It turned out he had a long and long-ignored history of racist remarks and behavior. (Where is he now?) Macacca, for those who don't remember, is a word for a macaque, a kind of monkey.

4. It was OK for cartoonists to depict GW Bush as a chimp because it played on his face and his frequent cluelessness. However, Bush was not black and so it was not outrageous. And I don't recall cartoons suggesting it would be OK to kill the chimp because, after all, it's an animal that could be dangerous.

5. This cartoon connects not only a degrading and specifically racist symbol with President Obama, it also explicitly introduces murderous violence.

6. There's no excuse for continued cluelessness among whites about the heavy weight of racist symbols and violence against blacks. The NY Post owes the president and the country an apology for stupidity and ignorance.

Colleen Clark
Cambridge, MA

Exactly

Ms. Clark, you are right on with your analysis. See my comments below ("Chimp shot dead = Obama"

Travis, Obama, and Chimpy

So, it is a surprise after hearing Republicans scream out at Palin campaign rallies: "Terrorist!" "Kill him!" Again and again and again..it is a shocking outrageous surprise that a Republican rag would depict Obama as an out of control chimpanzee who ripped off the face of some innocent victim (i.e. the Republican innocent victims)??? Don't be silly, we all know they want to murder him. They shouted it, they screamed it, they want it. Not that we shouldn't react. Most CERTAINLY we should react with outrage. However, we sure shouldn't react like the Muslims around the world reacted when that infamous Danish cartoon was published. The majority of Americans are behind Obama and WANT him to succeed, for their very lives depend on it. This cartoon is red meat to the Republicans and for the whole rest of the country it is a DEEP insult to all of us. And, you know what, it is just one more step along the road to oblivion for the Republicans.

Dead chimpanzee

Oldwoman says the obvious is being overlooked. In the cartoon the fright and shock in the chimpanzee's eyes, his fur electrified are an insult to all animals. No animal should be treated or used this way. My tears were for the chimpanzee. After seeing this odious picture, I looked at my two beautiful black cats and felt the loving innocence in them. I dared not think about the possibility of some human showing the same total disrespect for them. These are creatures that have a full range of emotions, including compassion and sadness, which is more than many humans have, as evidenced by the publishing of this cartoon and the discussion that carries not one whit of concern for the slain animal.

Deadly implications...

Those who deny the racial implications probably would deny racism is still rampant and destructive today. I know many people personally who do not see anything wrong with a grossly disproportionate number of black men in prison, blacks in poverty, unemployed and uneducated. These people feel these blacks had the opportunity to pull themselves up in this capitalistic society and just failed to meet the challenge.

Here's the 4-1-1:

The shooting of the chimp gone wild by attacking a woman had NO ASSOCIATION WHATSOEVER with the Stimulus Package. None. We all know this is Obama's Package. We all know the Republicans fought against this Package with everything they had. It is fact that the Republican Party embraces the racists in this country, for the most part. Blacks throughout history have been depicted as apes in a demeaning manner to indicate they are ignorant, uncivilized and prone to primal instincts, incapable of being citizens with rights.

The clear message of this cartoon is that we need to kill Obama (the chimp). This sends a blatant signal to the most racist, ignorant people in society that a monkey is running the country and needs to be eliminated.

Rupert Murdoch and those sending messages like this need to be held accountable and charged with inciting criminal activity against the president. He should be stripped of his right to publish in any form.

America is well into a crisis and may not come out of it. We cannot afford backward, criminal activity like this especially at this time. The implications are deadly, far-reaching and would set this country back to the 1600s mentality with a 1930s economy. This is too dangerous to allow to continue.

Persons of all race end up

Persons of all race end up in prison, poverty, and being derelict because of personal choice! Don't try to convince me that it has to do with skin color. Blacks who don't want to suceed ar break away from the steroetypes bash the ones who do!!

Chimp shot dead = Obama

"The clear message of this cartoon is that we need to kill Obama (the chimp)." deepseas, I think you have come the closest to seeing through this malicious cartoon. I've been observing some extremely nasty and even violent comments coming from the right. I don't know if they're trying to incite some sort of physical threat to Obama through some not-so-subliminal programming. But this cartoon seems to be one more attempt to create those feelings through images and trying to pass it off as "humor". As you say, there's no connection whatsoever between the chimp incident and the economic stimulus issue. If pictures are used as symbols, they are usually labeled, i.e., the chimp could have been labeled "stimulus package" and the police officer "Republican congress" or something to that effect. It still wouldn't make much sense, but my point is that by doing so, it would make the chimp represent a legislative bill, rather than a person. The police officers words confirm that they are using the chimp to represent Obama and that they saw him as a dangerous "creature" that needs to be killed.

Cartoon at first glance

Yes, indeed the cartoon at first glance does an injustice to the all African-Americans. My first reaction was that it was in very poor taste. No, I didn't hear about the monkey being shot in Connecticut until I read the rest of your article here. Shame on the NY Post for putting these words into the cartoon, very shameful indeed.

The Cartoon is Clearly Racist!!

There are no two ways to say it . . . The NY Post and all of its editorial staff that allowed this cartoon to be published are clearly and unequivocally racist!! More importantly . . . there is no real understanding (from many of people that I polled) of why they chose this caption in their attempt to relate their disdain for the economic stimilus bill and the shooting of the chimpanzee. Even Delonas has not convinced us that there is a relationship!! We, as Americans of this fine country, should allow this president to govern. He has been in office for less than one month and already those who don't agree with him, are showing their true colors. Unfortunately, many of us who are willing to give him a chance don't own news media outlets that are as powerful as the NY Post! The best thing that can happen is for staff members of the Post to step back and glean from the OUTRAGE that they must have offended thousands of Americans--black and white.

Study and Change your Thinking

Attacks like this remind me of the fact the Americans need to be given a true history of black people. We are the first in civilization. Don’t make any many mistakes. If the contributions of blacks in this country were taken back this would be a bleak place. I will not go into detail. All you have to do is research. As a matter of fact. History tells us that the European people were unlearned until they started to travel and come into contact with the darker peoples of the Earth such as the Egyptians, the people of Timbuktu in Africa, the Phoenicians and other peoples of the Earth near the Mediterranean Sea.

Media Putz

In the usage I'm accustomed to, the word "putz" has a kind of endearing quality, although significant negative overtones as well: someone is a "putz" if they are clumsy and maybe a bit stupid, but not awful. For racist crap like this, I think you need to re-name your award to something more fitting: "crime against journalism," "racist shriek of the week" (although I know the "putz" isn't always racist), "Limbaugh moment," or some such.

Putz

Not only is the word Putz used here as a minor insult but also seems to be a major insult to journalists that seek for the mighty pulitzer prize. Which as I understand is one of the highest awards anyone in the media can be given. but then I could just be over thinking it and giving people too much credit.

I Find The Chimp Cartoon Incredibly Offensive

No matter how you look at it, this is in very bad taste at the very least. Apparently Delonas has never had an interaction with so-called law officers and their militarily jack-booted thugery. There's even room for animal rights activist criticism.

This whole black white thing is getting old.

Bush was called a chimp, and worse, forever. Not saying it wasnt deserved. And some of it MAY have been racist, after all, he is white. Anything that disagrees with the new pres is labeled racist, if you dont agree, you are a bigot. This seems to be dividing the racial lines in this country even more.

You're just as dumb as the next person

Killin a chimp and talkin about the stimulus bill is pretty much sayin "KILL OBAMA HE'S STUPIS!" Now ur the dumb one Bush was a bad president so if any one called him a name he deserved ot becuz he sent inncoent people into war and half of them are dead. So need i remind u blacks were called the n-word, gorillas, chimps, monkeys and all in slavery days!!!

Feeling a Bit - PINCHED in Your Inherent Racism, notyours?

That's sure what your defensive stance, echo'd by other so-called "progressives" like ThomasM and Yman, sounds like to me.

But of course, what do I know? I'm a middle-aged White Lapsed Christian Conservative who felt Hillary Clinton ran a slezebag of a Presidential campaign against Barack Obama - though I'm increasingly wondering how much of that was actually her, and how much was her husband and his cronies undercutting her.... :/

Nice try "Doc", ...

... but you scream "RACIST!!!" to just about every comment relating to race that you disagree with, so it all sounds like "Wolf! Wolf!" after a while.

More importantly, you're a lapsed conservative!!!!! OMG! .... tooooooooooo funny!!! Conservative, Libertarian, Progressive, Nader suppoter/Nader hater, Clinton supporter/Clinton hater.

It's all a little clearer now, "Doc".

You're politically bipolar.

Bush was compared to curious George because he looked like him

None of that was racist, as Bush looked like a chimp and acted like Curious George. It was flattering, as a matter of fact. If you can't tell the difference, I feel sorry for you.

My goodness man - I take it

My goodness man - I take it as a given that you are white

Sorry - I think you are off your mark here

I don't normally post to buzzflash, but I do visit this site daily and I am a contributor. I consider myself very liberal, progressive, and an Obama supporter. Sorry, but I feel you totally missed the mark with this media putz of the week. It seems without much thought you jumped on the band wagon looking for a reason to knock the NYPOST. While not a regular reader or defender of NYPOST I do believe this is just a political cartoon based on a current event. With so many other putz' to report on, it seems you really had to reach far for a weak justification of this one. What? All political cartoons must edit themselves now for fear of someone somehow relating Obama to any stereotype? Sorry... I do not buy it. How many years have progressive site referred to GW Bush as a Chimp? I am only writing this posting as a concern that buzzflash is going to get deeper into praising Obama for the same things they condemed Bush for, and I am afraid you are starting to be more hypocritical in regards to giving passes to Obama that only a few short months ago you turned red in anger over when Bush or the Republicans did the same thing. Please... be careful. we need sites like Buzzflash. It seems the Obama presidency is going to be the true test of how progressive (but reality based) your site is. Peter

Reply to Peter

I agree with you to a point, and that point being that the cartoonist should have put Congress in that spot, not a single person. My first reaction was it was racist to the 9th degree as I took it to mean what everyone else has so far. I wasn't aware of the monkey being shot in Connecticut. Given that, the cartoon should have referenced the copy shooting the ape in Connecticut instead of a misleading caption leading to the conclusion everyone else drew from it, as that of being total racist, and even scarier, in my opinion, to think that some idiot out there might get to think of an assassination plot as the only answer. That would be horrible!
