Cokie's Slanders on Obama and Hawaii May be Just What the RNC Ordered

BUZZFLASH MEDIA PUTZ OF THE WEEK

Cokie Roberts

For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America.

Cokie Roberts went on attack this week, trying to portray Sen. Barack Obama's vacation to the state in which he was born and raised, and where close family members still live, as seditious.  Instead, we think she came off looking like a bigoted tool of the RNC, which more than qualifies her to be this week's Media Putz.

Roberts began her attack on ABC's This Week on Aug. 10. She somehow managed to admit Hawaii's statehood, while in the same breath erroneously calling it "foreign."

"I know his grandmother lives in Hawaii and I know Hawaii is a state, but it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place. He should be in Myrtle Beach, if he's going to take a vacation at this point."

Then on National Public Radio's Morning Edition the next day, Roberts repeated the attack to host Renee Montagne:

"I know that he is from Hawaii, he grew up there, his grandmother lives there, but he's made such a point about how he is from Kansas and, you know, the boy from Kansas and Kenya and it makes him seem a little bit more exotic than perhaps he would want to come across as at this stage in the presidential campaign."

Basically, Roberts is attacking Obama for not making his vacation into a political stunt. He usually visits Hawaii yearly, for Christmas vacation, but had to skip last year due to the campaign. He recently lamented the fact that he hasn't seen his grandmother, who is unable to travel due to health problems for about 19 months.

Besides the basic reasoning of Roberts' argument, there are two even more insidious aspects of her line of attack.

First, it's clear this is not just about distance.  Exotic has long been a code word for something much more sinister.  Consider this: Would Roberts have said the same thing if Obama were from the similarly far-flung and newly-minted state of Alaska? Would she say the same thing if his opponent, Sen. John McCain, visited his own equally exotic birthplace of the Panama Canal Zone (which is neither a state nor a territory)? We'd bet "no" on both counts. While her suggestion of Myrtle Beach, SC, boasts a population that is more than 81 percent white, Hawaii's white population is less than 30 percent. And that may be too frighteningly "exotic" for Roberts.

But it may be that this trip really didn't personally bother Roberts at all.  Perhaps she, along with Republican Party strategists, thought the American people might be convinced to react negatively to Obama's vacation, if fed the right buzzwords.  Which brings us to the second point: it appears Roberts may have been working directly from the McCain handbook of slander.

On The Jed Report Web site, there is a screenshot of an e-mail purportedly sent out to reporters by the RNC with what appear to be talking points on how to make Obama look bad for going home, titled "Barack Obama's Hawaii Travel Guide." It's complete with snarky notes about where Obama and his family ate and what they did while visiting the 50th state.

It would be one thing if Roberts came up with this lop-sided, prejudiced smear of Obama's trip home on her own. But her toeing the Republican Party line is truly reprehensible, albeit unsurprising.  So we agree with the nomination sent by Terry Adcock of Austin, Texas, and that's why Cokie Roberts is BuzzFlash's Media Putz of the Week.

Wow!! This blog and the

Wow!! This blog and the topic contained in this blog is awesome. I got more ideas about Journalism and their dedicated work. And especially I need to thank you for sharing this kind of topic. ========= george hawaii drug rehab

I'd like to really express

I'd like to really express my opinion about her but it contains 5 letter words, you know people from the east coast don't go to hawaii that often because it's pretty far, instead we travel to the usual FL, myrtle beach on occasion though it's nothing special at all, and we also have like every caribbean island next to us closer then hawaii is to Cali. We got it good here and on the west coast they go to hawaii. Whats the big deal about him going there with his family. hotels hawaii sunny sandy beaches we have it off our coast too and we enjoy it just as much. I can't believe her bringing this up when it's a family vacation that he's paying for.

Paranoia

When it is necessary to attack someone as harmless as Roberts ...

Pit Bull?

Roberts is the new GOP attack dog? Attacking with such scary words as "EXOTIC"? How cruel and vicious of this right-wing public radio! Someone please tell me that this article is tongue-in-cheek!

How wonderful it will be when all these senile old fossils

finally dry up and blow away...

"Insidious" and treacherous..!

"Insidious" and "Treacherous" are the perfect words to describe Cokie Roberts and the entire DC millionaire punditocracy. These ghouls can make the Clinton's overnight guest list into a fake-scandal (the so-called "Lincoln bedroom 'SCANDAL'!") - while ignoring CONVICTED fraudster Ken Lay, and CONVICTED briber-of-Congress Jack Abramoff's, REPEATED VISITS to the Bush White House.

The _insidious_ DC millionaire punditocracy can help Republicans turn "Lewinsky Scandal!" into a CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS, but join the Bush White House in WHITEWASING stolen elections, lies-to-war, pre- 9/11 incompetence (if not gross dereliction of duty), TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICITS, kangaroo courts for female privates accused of "abuse" (while, mind you, Bush & Cheney INSIST on the "right" to TORTURE PRISONERS TO DEATH, at their sole discretion, and with no oversight!), and abject war contracts corruption - all the above virtually censored, VERBOTTEN! from discussion in the pages of the national press or TV 'news' media.... thanks to the complicit, corrupt, lying, Insidious propaganda-meisters such as Cokie Roberts.

For many years

I wrote to Cokie YEARS AGO about a venomous, prejudiced story that she did. Her answer to me was a stock letter about how she always tries to be fair and balanced. Ha ha! Like Fox news! No, this is nothing new. She's a right-wing Catholic elitist woman with the hots for Authoritarian men (much like Phyllis Schafly)....and she tries to pretend to be a democratic American....but she is simply a fascist in sheep's clothing. I thought she was retired from the pundit scene, but obviously she's got some "connections" because she keeps coming back and coming back! Hey, network news shows---bring on some NEW perspectives and points of view! Stop shoving this old tired stuff down our throats!!!! (Well, no wonder I turn to Olberman, John Stewart, and Colbert for my TV news....)

Stewart?

Surely you don't take Jon Stewart's Comedy Central show seriously! Well of course you do. Forgive me. For a second there I forgot that you are a mindless liberal.

ABC and KOKIE cons

This is not new. Nightline was born attacking Jimmy Carter nightly about the hostages which brought him down. Sam Donaldson announced to the world that Ronald Reagan had won the debates when we all thought that Carter had won. David Brinkley called President Clinton a "BOAR" with disdain in his voice. George Will and KOKIE and ABC are Facist Korparate Tools and have been for a long time. The last debate where they ganged up on Obama was another example.

How many times has Cokie and Hubby Steve gone to Hawaii?

Hey, Buzz, why don't you poll everyone who reads Buzzflash and ask them to do some detective work. I'm sure the Buzz Flash Readership would like to report when they've seen Cokie and Steve in Hawaii--and I bet Cokie NEVER went to Myrtle Beach!

Diet Cokie seems to have gone rather flat

I have been hearing a lot that there isn't much to actually attack Barak Obama on, so the Right Wing Conservo Repugs are tossing all kinds of shit at him to see what might stick. And they have that tired fool Diet Cokie reading the same talking points.

It must be hard to be a Media Whore these days - your job is not dependent upon making actual news - just appeasing your corporate masters. Thankfully a majority of Americans seems to be waking up and resisting being spoon-fed the processed "news" that fills our Public Airwaves.

I just do not envy Barak Obama at all the many bad situations he will inherit from Shrub. He'll have to make a lot of unpopular calls to get us out of this mess, and the fingers will all point at him.

Vegan?

Eat a little meat. I think your brain needs protein.

Cokie the Kook

My stomach turned when I read how pathetic Cokie Roberts was on ABC. It is true that ABC has been turning into the racist republican channel just like Fox, but I really thought she had more sense than this. But, it shows there is so little to accuse Senator Obama of that is true, they have to try so hard to make something out of nothing.

Cokie's not One of Us

I wrote Cokie after watching her appalling comments on ABC. As a "pundit" she can comment on politics and policy but where does she get off telling ANYONE where they should vacation? I'm sure if he had gone to Myrtle Beach, she would have criticized him for not visiting his grandmother. My sister lives on Oahu and she said Obama's been having a nice relaxing vacation, seeing lots of old friends and picnicking in PUBLIC parks! How elitist! Barack's been playing basketball at his old school and not being hasselled because people know him and/or want to leave him alone for a change. He looks like a guy that wanted to go home to recharge his batteries with family and friends. There are some nice photos of him and his beautiful family. They seem really normal. How nice.

the proper vacation

I read that the McCains own 8 homes- nice they can choose one of them for a vacation. What I'd love to see a Journalist ask is: Mr. McCain, are all of your homes within the continental US? with the possible follow-up: Oh, where are they? Isn't COkie Roberts the daughter of someone who WAS an actual journalist, before the great, unannounced merger? **!%#^ The Vanished Frontier

8 homes?

There you go again with your ridiculous exaggerations. It is a well known fact that McCain owns only 7 houses. How many do you own? My guess is that you pay rent every month to some hard working conservative who made something of himself instead of just whining about how much someone else has.

snark

One other thing - I'm kind of glad they're being so snarky. I know they're doing it in the hopes that it will create memorable one liners that will hurt Obama, but I think they're missing a huge segment of the country that went along out of fear before but that is really tired of bad snark instead of good government.

Kookie Cokie

First of all, let's not forget whose network she was on too. ABC went to the dark side awhile ago - they brought us the great historical document that blamed 9/11 on Clinton. They have become as fair and balanced as, well, you know. Secondly, and I find this interesting. Prior to the show I had a client suddenly start ranting to me about Obama. I had never discussed politics with this client before, but, once he started, I was dumbstruck. Besides the fact that Obama shouldn't be president because he's a Muslim and we are in a war to the death with Islam, (no, really), this man also informed me that Obama couldn't be president because he wasn't an American - because he was born in Hawaii. (Now you see why I was dumbstruck). "But", I stammered, "Hawaii is a state." "Well, I suppose", he said, "But not like a real state. Besides, he's not like us". Considering that this was before the show, it does make me wonder what talking points are going around - probably by email, where they can't be stopped or challenged on their veracity. Cause Cokie's getting the same message.

Cokie's getting old and crochety...

...at least that's how she looked to me on ABC's 'This Week' last Sunday. We've known for some time that her political bent was tilting more and more to the right. This began to show shortly after she moved primarily to TV from NPR radio. When she was on the legal beat for NPR, she at least tried to present stories in a mostly objective manner. I used to enjoy listening to her analysis.

She no longer tries to hide her lean to the right, though. She's becoming increasingly crystallized (something that often happens as one ages) in an anti-liberal, anti-progressive stance. But then, why shouldn't she push her own perspective? Nearly every other talking head on TV does!

Turn off the TV. It's no longer safe to watch. :)

Amen

Cokie - another overly coiffed media whore/DC insider playing the role of political pundit for the extremely stupid and racist among us.
