Play "Seat the Senator!" Guess the day Al Franken will be sworn in as Minnesota's junior senator and win a prize from BuzzFlash

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTEST

Though author and comedian Al Franken declared victory in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race Jan. 6, he had to sit back and watch his future colleagues get sworn in without him that day. The canvassing board that gave Franken the 225 votes lead he deemed necessary to proclaim victory was challenged by the man who held the seat before Franken, Norm Coleman. As the soon-to-be former senator's lawsuit contesting the canvassing board's decision enters its fourth week, Minnesotans are finally losing their legendary patience. "When will it end?" they ask.

Well, rather than leave the Land of 10,000 Lakes answerless, we thought we'd turn to our readers. It's pretty clear that Franken will become Minnesota's next junior senator. But when he will be sworn in is another matter entirely.

Though clearly upset by the extremely sluggish pace of the current lawsuit and the long wait for the Minnesota Supreme Court to weigh in on a separate issue, Jay Weiner writes for MinnPost that the situation is affected by other events outside of the courtroom. Weiner notes that some think Coleman might give up sooner if it becomes apparent that fellow Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty won't run for reelection, giving Coleman a future political prize to focus on (after all this wouldn‘t be the first time Pawlenty took one for the GOP). Or maybe it's the Republicans in the U.S. Senate pressuring Coleman to keep on keepin' on so that the Democrats are denied that mythical 60-vote majority as long as possible.

Whatever the reason, this thing has been dragging on for quite some time. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is sweating, Franken is doing homework on Senate procedure and Coleman is fundraising.

And the rest of us are, well, guessing. Journalists have been crunching numbers for months now. And it's pretty obvious that Coleman has no chance at retaining his seat. But pinning down a swearing-in date is more art than science.

Which brings us to you, fair reader. You may be pleasantly surprised you stand to gain by this waiting game, even if you don't live in Minnesota. Join in the fun by playing our contest, "Seat the Senator: Guess When Al Franken Will Take the Oath of Office!"

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTEST

Al Franken is seated on... April 18, 2009

Let's seat him before tax day. Um...How about April 6. That would give him just enough time to put the last pair of underwear into his bag and zip it up. Monday is a good day. He could fly in on April 2 (just barely missing April Fools-definitely not a good day for this serious and erudite man). He could have all weekend to unpack and move into his office. But this is far too reasonable. I'll pick April 22-Earthday!!! Now we're talking! Oh, but the RNC might not go along with this. Just tooooo good! Tax day? Other choices: Easter Monday, April 13. Nope. He's Jewish, although egalitarian to the max. How about Passover, April 8, a Wednesday... April just plain HAS to be the month Al Franken is seated. Too many great opportunities for justice to be served, as well as comedy. In the long run, it probably makes about as much difference as what day you choose to get married. I say A.S.A.P.! My 18 year old son and I are visiting DC right now and would like to congratulate Al in person. Since we leave on April 3, we'd like him to be seated on April 2. As far as my "guess" for the contest? April 18. Why? It flew into my third ear.

Entries had to be in by February 28

For those submitting guesses beyond February 28, you won't be eligible to win. The rules above are quite clear.

Hopefully, we will see Sen. Franken in office really soon.

April 16th

Senator Franken will show the people of Minnesota a Senator they can all be proud of as soon as sore looser Coleman is shown the door. No matter how long that takes, with each passing day the people of Minnesota will know the kind of man Coleman really is. This guy, Coleman talks out of too many sides of his face, Al will speak the truth to the people he loves and represents, Plus, he has a great sense of humor. God speed Al Franken!

March 18th;

March 18th, just to be different –– and hopeful. Coleman is like the last guy to leave the party – after the hosts show up in their PJs to say "Don't let us rush you out."

March 31

There's already 2 of us on this day, so everyone else — pick another day! Thanks, bobz

Oct 12

I dont like to be the one that lets you all know how slow the wheels of justice trurly are. I wish it were sooner

My Guess is April 13

The trial in Minnesota will probably last another four weeks followed by Governor Tim Pawlenty dragging his feet on signing the election certificate. So I'm guessing another six weeks. April 13th happens to be my wife's birthday.

My guess

March 11

Al Franken

What Better day than April 1st.. The irony fits.

My Guess is march 20

http://drawmark.squarespace.com My Gues is march 20. Same day as Iraq war invasion

April 6

Given all the nonsense and bureaucracy.

Why does the GOP Hate Minnesota

...so much as to deny them the same representation in the U.S. Senate as the citizens of all other states? Why is the GOP giving Minnesotans taxation without full representation? My guess is that the Republicans will do whatever they can to subvert democracy, as usual, for as long as they can get away with it. Despite their efforts, my guess is that Al Franken will be seated on March 4, 2009.

Swearing in date.

Colorado Randy: Minn Supreme Court ruling March 12, Colman appeals to his right-wing buddies on the Supreme Court. They wait until April 14 to hear the case. Finally rule April 28, maybe for Coleman. Assuming the Court rules for Frankin then two days to arrange everything, April 30.

Only If The People In MINN Finally Wake Up...

March 2nd, 2009. If not by then, the voters of Minn should move to DC where they would have even fewer members in the Senate voting for them.

Franken

March 16th, 2009

Contest

Friday, March 13th, 2009

My Guess

March 27

March 23, 2009

But hopefully sooner.

AL FRANKEN

Franken will be seated on May 7, 2009. SAM

Seat the Senator . . .

March 17, 2009 Hopefully sooner . . . I really like that the GOP (Greedy Old Perverts) are spending so much time, resources and money to get Coleman placed as the U.S. Senator from Minnesota. He was really ineffective during his 1st term and is just a "yes" cog for the republican party apparatus. He is not a deep thinker and just does what the republican party tells him to do. Kent Hill San Diego, CA

Franken

march 28

My Guess: April 18

I hope it's earlier than April 18, but that's my guess.

February 27, 2009 for MN US Senator Al Frankan

or ?

Senator Franken will start

Senator Franken and I will both start working on the same day - 2 March 2009.

Get outta here Coleman!

Coleman is already gearing up for an appeal and the courts move so slow, I'd say May 11 before everybody has finally had enough.

Friday, March 13th

Wouldn't Friday the 13th be perfect?!

Prediction

Al Franken will be sworn in as Senator the day the Minnesota Sec of State is removed from office for malfeasance and is replaced by someone who is dedicated to the duties of the position.

Al Franken

03/12/09

Date

4/11/09

When Al Franken will be seated.

My guess and it goes to the psychology that the Republicans are playing where they are trying to treat Democrats like fools, is of course April Fools Day. Which of course is April 1st. Mary MacElveen! Benjamin Franklin once said, "It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority." With that said, please read what I have to say at http://www.marymacelveen.com

my guess

March 15th.

April 23, 2009

On April 23, 2009 Al Franken will be sworn in.....or perhaps later.

March 31

March 31

April 8, 2009

My Birthday!

my guess ...

... is March 7, 2009 !

I guess...

June 16th. 2008 hopefully sooner, but my guess is this.

The GOP will delay it longer than all of the guesses below

It wouldn't surprise me if this goes on for another year. Don't forget, this seat is the Repugs war trophy. Paul Wellstone, the man who would have coalesced the anti-war movement back in 2003 was assassinated by plane. The GOP is scared shitless that a Dem. senator, especially one as tenacious as Franken might expose them. Rove and Cheney have something very, very serious to worry about. There is no statute of limitations on murder.

Maybe never?

Coleman might appeal to the GOP's SCOTUS, which at a minimum will delay, and a Bush v Gore type of ruling is possible.

However, if their decision does support Franken, then let's put the swearing in day for after their summer recess begins ......... JUNE 30, 2009.

Franken' swearing in

TN Grandy The date is March 4th; definitely! I know it's already been taken, but never mind, we'll just toss a coin.

March 17

March 17

Ides of March

March 15th It worked poorly once, might work well for Al.

Tax Day

April 15, 2009. I pays my taxes; I gets my* senator.

* I don't have a senator. I live in Texas. Franken will do just fine! {:-)

Seat the Senator!

My prediction is that Al Franken will be seated as Senator on March 6, although I hope it happens much sooner than that.

Al Franken swearing in date

I guess 5/4/09, hope it's much sooner. jaglady

My Best Guess

February 27th, but sooner would be fine with me!

My guess

April 13th.
