If you were Harry Reid, how would you welcome Roland Burris to the Senate?
BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel
You already can imagine the graphic from one of the major cable news channels: Showdown in the Senate.
Well, Mr. Burris is going to Washington and we aren't quite sure what kind of reception he will get.
Roland Burris, the Senate replacement picked by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, is coming to Washington, but it isn't clear whether the Senate can keep him out.
We have heard about Article I, Section V of the Constitution, but it may not apply here. The strategy of running out the clock seems to be on the Senate's mind. It may not seem like it, but the Illinois state legislature is working hard to impeach the governor. Not working hard by normal standards, but working hard by Illinois political standards.
In watching the local news coverage yesterday, it's clear that the race card is in full effect. Yes, it is outrageous that there are currently no African-Americans in the Senate. But consider that in the 96 years of electing senators, the number of Democratic Party senators who are African-American from outside Illinois still reads at zero. And despite the good things that we've heard about Roland Burris, there are still legitimate questions over why Blagojevich picked him.
The Senate Democrats and Harry Reid have declared a line in the sand. But there is a concern that Reid and the Senate leadership haven't really held to any line in the sand so far, and there may be a compromise of some kind.
But if you were Harry Reid, how would you treat the arrival of Roland Burris? Treat him as a regular senator? Deny him complete access? Offer a watered-down compromise? Give us your thoughts.

I agree with the rude pundit
For those who've never heard of the rude pundit before, go here but be warned it's not suitable for viewing at work (unless you have a very liberated workplace) or if you're offended by expletives and obscenity used for comedic purposes.
If you care not to view it, the short summary is stop playing games and seat him. But you need to read the post to understand why it's the pragmatic thing to do.
Seat him, for Heaven's sake!
