How do Democrats work the Senate with less than 60 members?

BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel

So the best the Democrats can do is 59 Senators - well 57 plus Bernie Sanders (yea!) and Joe Lieberman (uh, yeah). There will always be time for moaning over not hitting 60, but given where the Democrats were in the Senate in 2004, especially on Election Night when Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle lost his seat, 59 is a very nice number.

Unfortunately, Mitch McConnell can count, and it's clear that despite the Obama-mania, the GOP will do what it can to make the president-elect look bad. To be fair, this is what the Republicans are best at doing -- being the bee when you are trying to enjoy a late summer picnic.

There is still the prospect of picking off a Republican senator for a vote or two -- or picking off two if Lieberman or a Democrat rocks the boat. A potential Cabinet post might tempt Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. Arlen Specter isn't going gently into that good night, saying he's ready for whatever comes at him in 2010, Republican or Democratic. Specter, who has dealt with a brain tumor, will be 80 in 2010.

Mel Martinez (R-FL), who announced he won't run for re-election, might be someone Obama can work with. There is the long-time standby Chuck Grassley (R-IA). Judd Gregg (R-NH) might be more willing, given his re-election bid in 2010. And depending on the vote, Orrin Hatch could be an unlikely ally.

So how do the Democrats handle the Senate? Gift baskets to McConnell? Push through legislation the Democrats know they can pick off a Republican (education??)? Appoint a Maine Senator to the Cabinet? Let us know what you think.

How Democrats work with less than 60 Senate members!

Hold John McCain to his claim that he is a "maverick" and seek those Republicans (there are a few) who are not Conservative ideologues, and are there to serve the American people, not the extremists on the right, not the corporate lobbyists, and certainly, not the anti-constitutionalists, of which there are too many.

It's a simple 2-step process

(1) Replace Harry Reid with a senator who is willing to take and stick with a principled position. (2) if a band of 40 or more Regressives decides to filibuster, let ‘em. Turn on the lights, roll the cameras so all can watch as the gasbags play their fiddles, Nero-like.

1) aint no such thing.

1) aint no such thing. latest example:http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/12/04-2 2)while we're watching the Regressives, what will the dems be doing? The democrats are not the solution. 3)its up to you and me. i dont know that we're up to it. we'd rather just lay it on some miserable SOB like Bush and be done with it.

Reid on Drugs!

If Al Franken wins in Minnesota, does than not given the Reid the 60 votes he stupidly thinks he would have to stop a filibuster? If 43 Democrats are such eunuchs - when Reid doesn't even have a sack in which to carry anything remotely resembling gonadal tissue, much less an actual scrotum with testicles, one would have to be on a Valium drip with a 100 mg Demerol "push" to think Reid could get all 58 Democrats, (assuming Franken holds his slim lead through the recount)to envoke cloture.

On the other hand, the Lizard Faced McConnell has control of the Republicans including the alleged RINOS when it comes to filibustering.

What would Reid have to promise both overtly and covertly to Lieberman and his AIPAC/Zionist party to secure his vote?

The Skeptical Cynic hath spake!

Santa knows when you are sleeping,
He knows when you're awake.
He knows if you've been bad or good.
Unfortunately, so does Bush,
Cheney, Rice, Mukasey, and...
the FBI, ONI, CIA, MCIA, NSA,
DIA,MI6, MOSSAD, AIPAC,

Reid and most of the Senate is OWNED by A*I*P*A*C

Why do you think Joe was vindicated -twice. First by Harry and second by
Obama.
I can't believe any sensible person would approve of Liebermans conduct against his other colleagues. Anyone else would have been punished.

Secondly, please tell us which hospital you work in -SO WE CAN STAY THE HELL AWAY!

Nationalism is not terrorism. And an adversary is not an enemy.

Joe owned b AIPAC

Were Joe Lieberman owned by AIPAC, he would not have been the keynote speaker for the Rev. Hagee, whose only support for the State of Israel is that it means the end of the Jews. Joe Lieberman is not a friend of Israel, and apparently, neither are you; and if you are not, are you a supporter of Islamic fundamentalism which seeks to destroy every faith except that of Islam?

WE are going to have to work the Senate

We have to HAMMER the Republicans as soon as they start obstructing legislation that the majority of Americans WANT and DEMAND! Most Republicans don't give a f**k about anything other than party and money. WE are going to have to wake them up and be relentless about it. And by Republicans, I mean the loathsome blue-dog (read phony) Democrats too.

C'mon

From the year the Republicans took control of the Senate (1995) until now, they never had a majority of more than 55 votes and less in most years. They still had little trouble ramrodding their legislation through. To think that the Democrats would permit a minority party to obstruct critical legislation for lack of a single vote is shameful. It is even more shameful when considering that whatever legislation the Democrats propose and allow the Republicans to obstruct will hardly be radical to begin with.

They won't, because they're aftraid - stil..

The trouble with Democrats was, is and always will be, now -because Obama just reinforced it - is that Dems on their own simply don't have the balls to stand tough and back their own beliefs -against anyone or anything.

Many overlook this simple fact: the number of voters (and their dollars)calling themselves Democrats has declined rapidly over the last 7 election cycles as a direct result of their poor performance.

While people boasted about the 'successful 90's under Clinton, Democrats hadn't won an election and had become increasingly unpopular. In response to the dwindling DSCC and DCCC campaign funds Emanuel, Schumer and McAuliffe took most of their money and the attached talking points from the very ones who've collapsed our economy -east coast hard-liners, pro-war mongers, pro-globalization or bust business donors.
They sold their souls to the devil.

And he already had every Republican on board.

Mitch McConnell, the Minority leader, whippped Harry's ass so bad for so many years because Reid and Schumer were indebted to the same masters the Republicans were, and had to go along or risk their own necks. They had to stop other more Progressive Democrats from upsetting their donors.

Read Schumers articles - he brags how he was able to force through votes the others Dems didn't want to make: remember Feingold and his efforts to kill the Patriots Act?? Thank Schumer and Reid and their donors - the party can't be fixed now.

the Senate Democrats have sold out, and are hopeless sheep now.

And I intend to change that by never voting for anyone but an Independent or Green.. If a handful of Blue Dogs or the gang of 14 can clog the works - so can an handful of Progressives, bold enough to stand against them all.

Nationalism is not terrorism. And an adversary is not an enemy.

Ohhh the anguish ....

.... of the recently disillusioned "true prog".

So predictable, yet so visceral, so real ......

Well, .......

............ real funny.

Don't forget to let us know how it works out with those "bold enough to stand against them all".

doing 59 on the floor

the answer can be divined from William S. Burroughs or Jonathan Swift. they will bedeck themselves in offal and perform vile acts whilst throwing bales of greenbacks out the window, barking "God Bless America" to the shrieks of the orgiastic galleries.
