Why do women see through Sarah Palin more easily than men do?

There is a strong backlash among women to the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate. If you Google [Women against Sarah Palin], you get organized places where you can go to feed your interests.

Here were the top 3 in my Google search:

http://womenagainstsarahpalin.org/

http://womenagainstsarahpalin.blogspot.com/

http://snoringkatz.vox.com/library/post/women-against-sarah-palin.html

Though I am not a woman, I can imagine there are plenty of reasons for women to find disfavor with Gov. Palin, regardless of political ideology. The severe thoughts on abortion, the whining, the hiding from the press, the way she willingly outed her unwed, "pregnant" teenage daughter.

And there is talk of cats against Palin here and here.

But men seem to like her, and since I am a man, I can address this issue. From the CNN Opinion Poll from September 9, 62% of men had a favorable rating of Palin vs. 53% of women. There was a 7% difference in unfavorable (30% for women, 23% for men).

If you Google [Straight Men against Sarah Palin], you don't get an outlet. So there isn't this realm of organization against her. (To distinguish, I picked straight men since gay men are less likely to be influenced by her physical beauty.)

But is it just her looks? Yes, this is dangerous ground: judging a political candidate based on looks. But honestly, didn't John Edwards seem to have an advantage based on his hair? John Edwards had great hair, but also had ideas, passion, and experience. Didn't John F. Kennedy have some advantage over Richard "Five O'Clock Shadow" Nixon? JFK was considered handsome, but he knew what to do at 3 a.m. Edwards and Kennedy had to prove that they were solid thinkers underneath the good hair.

I noticed the family portrait against the mountain backdrop, and did pick up on her attractiveness many months ago. But I'm not the only one. I still recall sitting at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo on August 29 when Palin was first introduced by John McCain, and the responses from the men besides, "Who is she" were variations on "She's hot."

Plus, her family released the now famous photo of Palin in college, of her wearing a T-shirt that reads: "I may be broke but I'm not flat busted"?

The Republicans played up the "hottest VP" element on buttons in St. Paul. These are the same people who now think attacks on Palin's background and trouble with the truth are sexist.

And there are other traits that she has that appeal to men: she likes sports -- she is a hockey mom and she likes to hunt, even if it takes some bizarre turns. You get the impression that Sarah lets Todd be his own man.

There is more to a candidate than hotness or comfort with sports. If they were serious considerations, then Pamela Anderson could be vice president? (She is old enough but she's Canadian.)

But the reaction from women has nothing to do with Palin's looks or "hotness," but knowing that where a candidate stands on the issues and the example of leadership that is set is crucially important.

So why was there the talk of Hillary Clinton supporters jumping over to the Republican ticket because they added a woman to the ticket?

The SNL sketch with Palin and Clinton was played up for laughs, but there was a lot of truth to it. There is a backlash against Palin because the pick is seen as patronizing toward women ("Just find me a woman, any woman") and because Clinton was seen as qualified to be president and Palin isn't.

When I talk to women, I get that they hate Sarah Palin in ways that are beyond politics, and they're confused as to why any Hillary Clinton supporters would jump to Sarah Palin. But I think I know why.

Most of the Hillary/Palin support is anecdotal and exaggerated by the MSM to create conflict where it doesn't exist. But there is one more reason: some of those Hillary Clinton supporters weren't dyed-in-the-wool Democrats.

When Hillary Clinton decided to run for president, there were many supporters who liked her for a number of reasons. But it's reasonable to believe that some of them wanted her to win because she is a woman. Even those that disagreed with her on the issues were excited about the prospect of having a woman be commander in chief.

So when Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic Party primary to Barack Obama, the supporters were upset. When Obama didn't pick a woman, it opened the door for McCain to pick a woman, and he did.

McCain is 72, and it's reasonable to expect that Palin would have a very good chance to take over, temporarily or permanently, in the next 4 years if elected. If having a woman in the White House is your issue, then the Republicans or Cynthia McKinney is your ticket in 2008.

But for the vast majority of Clinton supporters, they wanted her to be president because they believed she would be the best leader for the horrible times in which we live. And this is what the McCain campaign didn't realize.

Sarah Palin is great for energizing the base, but she has very little crossover appeal among independents. What appeal she does have is predominantly for men.

But there are many reasons straight men shouldn't fall for Sarah Palin, even if these reasons are a little patronizing. Sometimes, patronizing works for straight men.

Her stance on abortion isn't cool if you don't want to have a child. She likes fighting wars, which is bad if you get asked to fight those wars. You might come back injured or killed.

She lies with ease, an unappealing trait. She doesn't know how to control her spending, an undesirable trait. She is loyal, almost to a fault, but if she perceives that you double-crossed her, she will get revenge.

To all straight men out there, yes, Sarah Palin is pretty, but you have to consider her record and approach to our nation's problems. Don't vote for her because she's pretty -- she's not running for junior class president in high school. You can't date her, she's married.

Vice President of the United States is a very important role: if the VP did a good job, I wouldn't care if that person looked as horrible as Dick Cheney.

Same Ol' Game

It's the same ol' game that the republicans have been playing for years. Bring out the good looking "chick" and men/women will flock to them. Remember airbrain Quale? Bush chose him simply because he was young and "good looking" so the women would vote for him. They admitted it! Now, they bring out Ms. Caribu Barbie for the same reason. In this case the "woman reason" sort of backfired for the most part. Us women know danger when we see it and Palin is certainly dangerous. She's against everything we fought for over the decades! Sadly, there are some women out there who can relate to her and will actually vote for the McSame/Palin ticket for only that reason. These are the same ones who have been stepped on by the Bush administration and will continue to be stepped upon by McSame as well.

How about Cindy McCain's Vision?

Cindy McCain is very quiet on Palin. Don't you wonder what is going through her mind as John oohs and ahs over Sarah? Maybe she flashes back to the time when she was the mistress for Adultering John.

Wrong, not only men can see through Palin better

but they can also use her better, like they use all women.

McCain and his team could see through Palin and use her reactionary, apocalyptic, armageddonist, rapturist, and retrograde fascism to his (dis)advantage in the polls.

Obama and his team can also see through Palin and attack her reactionary, apocalyptic, armageddonist, rapturist, and retrograde fascism to fool the left into believing they're an alternative to McCain.

This planet is ruled by men and will continue to be so forever.

I dunno I'm a man and...

I saw through her right away, but that's in part thanks to sites like this, and cable shows like Countdown and Rachel Maddow. I say THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all of them. Still and all I'll admit that when I first heard of McSame's pick I said "Who?", and wanted to know not only who she was but what she was about.

Oh and to the apparent men haters in some the comments below, you really should consider getting some professional help to deal with your obvious issues with the male sex. Though it's true that there are men out there who can't see beyond a large pair of breasts, or only think with their 'lower head', not all men fall into that category. To take the attitude that all men are in that category is an indication of ignorance and sexism. It's no different that a man saying that all women are 'witches' with a 'b' and only use men for what they can get from them, or that women are stupid, or second class humans because of the fact they're female.

Ok, Why Do Women See Through Palin?

1) We see through the reason McCain picked her, and the timing. 2) We don't like her anti-abortion stance (making victims of rape pay for their rape kits?) 3) She is a member of a radical, holy roller church. 4) She didn't care enough about her own kids to keep them out of the spotlight (or, she cared too much about her own ambition to consider her kids). 5) She's an opportunistic ***** who steps on people on her way up. 6) She lies without blinking. 7) She's not that pretty, really kind of hard-looking, sort of Medusa-esque. 8) She's under investigation in Alaska for: Troopergate, improper firing of a public official, improper use of government facilities for political purposes, trying to ban books. 9) Bridge to Nowhere (oh, that's where I heard of her before the McCain last-minute pick). 10) She has close ties to a senator who is under investigation. 11) She left her hometown in the red. 12) She's in the pocket of big oil. 13) I have a sneaking suspicion that she's really stupid, but very driven, and that scares me, sort of like the way McCain scares me. 14) She has a whiney, nasal voice that hurts my ears.

Right On, Rick7!

Not stupid at all, Rick! I have heard as recently as yesterday directly from a GOP male that he will vote for McCain-Palin strictly because he likes Palin's looks. Her appearance is definitely considered by such "intellects" as qualification.

As a straight male, I know women have a long tradition of using their looks to distract and influence men. In this instance, since the GOP likes to pretend that they are rough, buff, and tough (even though most of them had "other priorities"), it makes perfect sense that they would be willing to hide behind Palin's short skirts. It makes them look even more virile (despite the Viagra).

why do women see through Palin

Women see through Sarah Palin easier than men because we "know" her type. We have seen it ever since jr. high school. Cute, perky, flirty, competitive, and cheats at the drop of a hat to get what she wants. Cheats in friendships by pretending friendship until she gets what she wants and then, she either drops her friends like a hot potato or stabs them in the back. Cheats in sports by trying to throw the game in any way she can think of. Cheats with the "authorities" by charm and lies. And smiles all the while because she HAS the power because she is CUTE. Oh yeah, we recognize her alright. Men, on the other hand, don't care about these things at all. They never were her "friend". They never competed with her in sports and all they are dreaming about is getting her to respond to THEM sexually.

Body Parts

She has a pretty face, perky boobs, shows just enough leg, and wears high heels. Men can see themselves in bed with her. And they don't have to listen to her. We all understand how straight men's minds work. Big head turns off when they see her. Little head stands at attention.

Why women see through Palin.

I'm a lesbian and I don't think Palin is hot at all. Perhaps it's simply the fact that I find the idea of a Republican lesbian pretty funny and strange. I think Palin is an insult to progressive-thinking women. She's the most anti-women woman possible...at least for those of us women who believe in women's rights. Personally I voted for Barack (and will again) because I thought he was better qualified and it's time for fresh blood and new ideas. But I wouldn't have drowned in sadness if Hillary had won the nomination. At least I can view Hillary as a woman who is a champion of women's AND lgbt rights. She's strong and a great role model for young girls and women. Not to mention the acheivement of Hillary as a mother. Now Chelsea is hot and obviously very intelligent like her mother. ;) It's very clear to me that Palin is unqualified for VP. She can see an uninhabited island of Russia from Alaska and that's her extent of foreign policy...are you f@$&ing kidding me??? I am glad to see that Hillary refuses to give the media the "cat fight" that they so desperately want.

palin is eye candy

Palin is eye candy for the white emasculated republican male. It's just that simple. Republican men are very content to be uninformed voters. It is so much easier than thinking.

Men & Palin

It's a no brainer, actually. A mans brain ain't in his skull!

why do women see through Sara Palin easier than men?

Very simple. They don't have penises.

And women accuse men of being sexist?

Thanks for confirming that sexism isn't just a male issue... Seems you're the one who's 'simple' given a statement like that.

Little Sarah

Sara Palin has been packaged to turn out the gun toting, gay hating, minority fearing, snake handling, end of days church vote, to get a rise out of over 40 something MILF Viagra guys (she doesn't wear pants suits), and to galvanize wool socks with Birkenstock grudge bearing women for Hillary types who do wear pants suits.

Yeah, well, Men In Black II

Yeah, well, Men In Black II "with the right mammaries I could rule this planet" but does a "favorable" rating in this case mean they will vote for her? Uh... sorry... stupid question

Women are less sentimental than men...

...and Sarah Palin represents the perfect fertile, middle aged-nubile, high-caliber shootin babe (but still obedient to hubby Todd) that many of the "Deer Hunting With Jesus" blue-collar idiots who vote for Repugs anyway will vote for now with added gusto from their "little" heads. This country has some SERIOUS damn macho STUPID going on, and now it's time to pay the ignorance tax. Don't worry, though...they'll still call it a democracy, with liberty and justice for all who cooperate. They'll never know they're not free.

didn't ARCHIMEDES say===================>> >>> >>>> >>>

Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and a couple really hot looking tits, some pouty lips, some great hair, and a tight skirt..... and I will move the world. While it certainly qualifies her as EYE CANDY... and the thought of watching her and Cindy in a wet t-shirt contest on the White House lawn after a difficult day of Easter Egg Rolling..... I would still prefer someone with brains and experience. SADLY the NASCAR Dads think they will get to Smack The Salami to the State of the Union, and save some of their hard earned money from having to buy playboy. What they don't understand is the difference between SARAH PALIN and A BULLDOG... 1) The bulldog doesn't mind being called bitch 2) The bulldog is smart enough to know that seeing Russia is not Foreign Policy experience 3) If you have sex with one, and still have your BALLS... it was the bulldog

true enough, but preaching to the choir...

Voting someone to high, powerful office based on looks and some moronic idea that they're "someone you'd wanna hang with" may be dumb, but all the evidence is already out there: people willing to vote the McCain ticket are dumb. There's no escaping that, in any way at this point. From this perspective, Palin is perfect - I could scarecely imagine a better ticket for that ideology.
