Barack Obama should pick a progressive as his running mate

BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel

Yesterday came and went, and Barack Obama didn't select a vice presidential nominee. And that person, at least for the moment, wasn't Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), despite the rumors.

In perhaps the best-kept secret since "Who Shot J.R.?", we still have no clue who Obama will pick. But if Bayh's name was leaked to see the reaction, it wasn't all that positive, especially in the progressive world.

If this was a leak, hopefully Obama and his top campaign advisors got a taste of what might happen from the base if Obama picks someone who isn't progressive.

(And yes, the usual disclaimer: BuzzFlash will support the vice presidential nominee, whomever Obama picks. We assume in this disclaimer that it won't be Sen. Joe Lieberman. But we will support whomever that is.)

But this is about helping Obama win in November, and the strong belief that the best way to go for a running mate is to pick someone who is progressive. If there is some credibility to this CBS News survey, 30 percent said that the choices of their vice presidential running mates will have a great deal of influence on their decision. And the 2008 equivalent of Lieberman will seriously hurt Obama.

And I'm not the only one. The People For the American Way have an online petition asking Obama to pick a progressive as his running mate.

In my lifetime, I've grown weary of this "moving to the center" mentality for VP nominees, mostly because it doesn't work. The moves upset the base and don't attract a whole lot of people, a lose-lose situation.

Obama has done a few things since becoming the presumptive nominee to move to the center, including his vote on FISA and his reversal on offshore drilling. Whether that will work in November remains to be seen, but it's not a good sign. Voters like Obama in part because they feel like he stands for something, if only he would stay still on these issues.

Vice presidents can energize the base. This may seem difficult to believe, but Republicans were wary in 2000 about George W. Bush since they were worried he would take after his father and not be conservative enough. When Dick Cheney was picked as the running mate, the conservative base felt better about Bush since Cheney was on the ticket.

Obama can do for the progressives. Sure he will take his shots from the pundits, since they want Obama to move to the center. But the pundits aren't going to vote for Obama; the people are. And giving them a progressive candidate will bring energy to the ticket.

Obama needs to educate the American public about where Democrats and progressives stand on the issues. Progressives know, but the general public doesn't. And Obama needs that person, in the #2 slot, to be a true believer to the cause, someone to the left perhaps as far as Cheney is to the right. The voters need a clear choice in November: John McCain -- more of the same, more of Bush policies -- or Barack Obama -- a new change, a new direction. A progressive or left-leaning vice president who won't be trapped in the wishy-washy center is exactly what Obama needs as a running mate.

On the "Colbert Report" last night, Kevin Costner said true leadership is taking people where they don't want to go. There is a trust with Barack Obama that the American people are willing to follow him, but he has to go in a strong direction. A centrist VP will show weakness, a progressive VP will show strength. And that strength is just what Obama needs - the major opportunity for a presidential candidate to show true leadership.

Don't Choose a "Progressive".

And don't choose a "moderate" either. No left-leaners, right-leaners, or middle-of-the-roaders. This country is too far gone to settle for the same old equivocators.
Dennis Kucinich for VP!!

Obama VP

While I would most prefer a progressive VP, the only way Obama would *definitely* lose my vote would be to nominate Nunn.

As I've stated on previous occasions, he should not pick anybody in either house of Congress. We need all the seats we can get, especially a filibuster-proof Senate.

Personally, I'm still pulling for Richardson.

donilo: Obama is already in

donilo: Obama is already in the center - if not a bit toward the right. He (and we!) definitely needs a progressive running mate, or at least someone who leans more left than he does.

GOTTA be a progressive

I sipped at the cup of hope, and choked before I could swallow it. FISA, IRAQ, HealthINSURANCE, Off Shore Drilling? Don't know who I'd choose, I'm smart but not THAT smart. We need a "New Deal" out here in the real, and progressive, elightend leadership is the last chance to save us. If (when) we get the same corporate government, then the revolution. Resistance IS Required Faith Carr

VP

Obama is progessive enough. Progressives should be delighted in him even though he has resisted the Republican attempts to define him as a lefty by voting for FISA and making offshore drilling part of his energy plan. I have a funny feeling that he is going to pick Hillary. It seems it would be ingenious to build the suspense while pretending that Hillary isn't in the running, and then announce her at the convention. She has the advantage of being popular in states where Obama is weak, and of course there are all those hard-core women who can make or break any candidate if they just get their heads together. The fact that this seems to be unlikely is, in a way, the best argument that it may well happen.

"Progressives should be

"Progressives should be delighted in him even though he has resisted the Republican attempts to define him as a lefty by voting for FISA" Funny. To evade pigeonholing by actively and powerfully promoting the goals of the right wing. The FISA vote violated, if not shredded, the 4th ammendment, and crapped all over the concept of the Rule of Law.

It ain't a tattoo

I know people that smoked pot legally. Laws can be changed.

Yeah .............. tattoos aren't important ....

........ the Fourth Amendment is.

No big deal, since the FISA "compromise" can be changed, right? By the same logic, if Obama voted in favor of a federal Jim Crow law in order to help him get elected, it would be okay, right?

After all, "laws can be changed".

BTW - Like MoveOn said "These companies helped the Bush Administration illegally spy on the emails and phone calls of innocent Americans. By giving "immunity" to these companies, all lawsuits brought against them by civil liberties groups would be thrown out of court. That means we may never find out how far Bush went in breaking the law. And once it's done, it can't be undone."

Yeah ..................... like a tattoo.

I would pick Ralph Nader

Then the crooks won't try to shoot him.

Obama's veep

I like Jim Webb. He is a fearless speaker and he says what he means. He is from the south and is STRONG. Patsy

progressive VP

Absolutely! Ever since Obama won the primary, his moves to the center have been draining the blood ( and hope ) out of me, and I think out of the Democrats as well. The worst thing he could do now, in my humble opinion, is play it safe. The safest choice would be the most dangerous to us all. He's playing 'prevent defense', a sure way to lose. And if he wins by doing that, what has he won? It isn't really the presidency that's at stake here. It's the future of truth in America; the future of faith in our country. Evan Bayh isn't going to help us. Or Kaine. Or Nunn. We need somebody exciting, some one who is excited about bringing something new and true.

It ain't gonna happen...

But I'd really like to see Obama chose Mario Cuomo as Veep and John Edwards as AG. Bumpa

Nancy Pelosi!

Obama should pick Nancy Pelosi and get her out of the House!

More important than what we stand for

is telling America what we've done. Everything beneficial for the average person that's happened in the past 125 years is the work of progressives. Republicans have done exactly nothing. And we've done it so well, nobody even notices. Let the people see our resume.

You're 100% Correct!

Bettysdad, you're 100% correct and I can never understand WHY the democrats have never addressed this when campaigning. Instead of acting all wishy-washy, how come they haven't come right out and stated all of the wonderful key policies and laws which the democrats have brought forth to this country over the decades which have made the foundation for the middle class? WHY haven't they done this?! If "average Joe american" can understand that the programs that they take for granted and which have become the fabric of our society were created by the democrats, then perhaps they would understand WHY Ronald Reagan was NOT a good president - as much as they think he was. Heck, list the programs so they can see for themselves the DIRECT affect democrats have on their lives - social security; community colleges so that ALL citizens have access to a close and reasonable education; making unions legal; reasonable college loans; all of the roads, bridges, parks, museums, etc. that the Works Projects Administration constructed under FDR; all of the regulatory agencies which ensure clear air/water, safe planes/trains/bridges/etc.; child labor laws, the 40 hour work week in which hourly employees must be paid overtime..... the list goes on and on. Does Obama need to have a progressive V.P.? You better believe it! After the mess of these past seven years (for that matter, the last few decades!), America can't afford NOT to have a progressive to get this country back on track in which there is opportunity for all - not just for the select few.

Progressive Vice President

The Democratic Losership Council has called the shots for far too long. Mr. Obama, pick a Veep candidate with not only progressive credentials, but with a set of principles as well. Ask Russ Feingold to be your running mate.

IF Obama people are reading, don't make mistakes of Kerry & Gore

The GOP has won all of these decades by having a clearly defined set of ideas and sticking to them. Democrats by contrast appeal to their progressive base in the primaries then piss on them in the general election to gain corporate support--or at least avoid offending corporations. If Obama picks a corporate tool like Bayh, some of the new voters he picked up in the primary might not know the difference, but the progressive who do the bulk of the door-knocking, and get out the vote work, might sleep in a little later, quit a little earlier, or simply find more important things to do on election day if it seems like they are simply helping elect a Clinton of another color. Obama should save himself some trouble: anyone who has ever had anything to do with the DLC should be off the list. There are progressives who could add to the ticket and even help on national security like Wes Clark. Choosing a corporate-owned Democrat would only be viewed as positive by the owners who prefer the pretense of democracy to the reality. Professorsmartass.com

Ahah!

"And yes, the usual disclaimer: BuzzFlash will support the vice presidential nominee, whomever Obama picks." Whomever, eh? A Zell Miller as VP nominee would get your backing too? Sounds like BZ is a good Democratic Party apparatchik organization and/or front. Another reason to dump the One Party Corporate System With The Two Heads. Run Ralph. Run!

I'm in that 30% and am from Virginia

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/timmullins Lieberman would help Obama more than Kaine, McSame is starting to look appealing....
