Should Barack Obama hire a well-known media figure as his WH press secretary?

BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel

Given the passing of Tony Snow over the weekend, I wondered whether he would still be press secretary if the colon cancer hadn't forced him to leave the post. Oh, he said something about the job not paying enough ($168,000) when he left, an insult to the 94% of Americans who make under $100,000 a year. But he likely left because of his health.

Whatever you might have to say about Snow, hiring him as press secretary was a brilliant tactical move by the Bush Administration. For the first time, one of their own, the MSM, was hired to be the White House press secretary.

Traditionally, White House press secretaries are plucked from obscurity and placed in front of the feeding frenzy of the MSM. Who had heard of Ari Fleischer, Scott McClellan, or Dana Perino before their move to the big stage?

But hiring Tony Snow meant that the MSM would be nicer and kinder to one of their own. And they were much nicer. Not that the MSM has actually been in a feeding frenzy with Fleischer, McClellan, and Perino, but they were much nicer to Snow.

So would the same formula work if Barack Obama becomes president? Should Obama hire a well-known media person to be his press secretary?

Now it's entirely possible that a great idea might fall flat on its face, given how much harder the MSM will be on a Democratic president than a Republican one. But this is all the more reason to hire someone who is known to the MSM, someone who the MSM might lighten up on. And if Obama pursues the strategy, it is vital that the first press secretary be this well-known person.

In my lifetime, I have seen two Democratic presidents, and one of those got a honeymoon from the press (Carter). After the beating Clinton took from the press starting on January 21, 1993, Obama desperately needs someone in the trenches that can give him a huge advantage. Obama needs momentum, and anything that can get that rolling would be a huge start.

Obama does have a better understanding of this world when he hired award-winning television and print journalist Linda Douglass. She is working on the campaign as a senior strategist and as a senior campaign spokesperson. Having a media-savvy president will certainly help manage and massage the MSM.

It's certainly possible that Douglass has an inside shot at being the new press secretary. But Obama might be better off with a fresher face when he starts out in 2009.

So let's toss out some names. What known media persona would be a great choice as Barack Obama's first White House press secretary? Let us know what you think.

WHAT!

WHAT? about Thom Hartman, and I will go along with Rachel Maddow, and there are others. that is if Obama gets elected I see it starting NOW that the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA is doing there HACHET job on OBAMA. Just look at CNN and the cover of the NEW YORKER they flashed it every thirty seconds on screen, It was if WOLFIE boy just found the pot of gold, Glen Beck was just loving it to death, the only on one CNN that was not going along was Jack Cafferty. LOOK People the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA are out to make sure that there BOY John McCain is sitting in the WHITE HOUSE come November. There PARIENT companys Of the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA has made BILLIONS Off of this WAR and they will not go QUIETYL in the night. They are going to use every DIRTY TRICK THAT Karl ROVE(TURD BLOSSEM) has to give them. They are just starting there march to GIVE John McCain the White House has just began. Either fight as DIRTY AS Karl Rove (TURD BLOSSEM) or leave the FIELD, that is the CHOICES. Again it is not THE Main Stream Media , PLEASE it is the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA.

Keef

More than anything, Obama will need a press secretary who isn't afraid to give the finger to some stooge from the MSM with a stupid question. That would be Keith Olbermann.

Press secretary?

Jon Stewart would be a cool choice

Hire ALL of them

When elected, our next president should hire every single member of the Barbie/Ken D.C. press corps. Maybe then we might get a couple of journalists to take their places to cover the news in our nation's capital. All we have now are a bunch of nice looking puppets that don't want to offend anyone by asking real questions. It doesn't matter who is Press Secretary. All that job requires is the ability to lie with reckless abandon - the current D.C. press corps is quite accomplished at that. Hire 'em all!

Obama White House Press Secretary

boboh Bill Moyers, Rachel Maddow, or Helen Thomas.

Press Secretary

Bill Moyers but he would not take it, I would guess. How about Lester Holt or Mika Brzezinski?

Press Secretary

Rachel Maddow would be a great choice, but how about Keith Olbermann? The down side to selecting him is losing him from Countdown.

should obama hire media person

yes andrea mitchell

Press secretary

Helen Thomas or Dan Rather

Press secretary

Bill Moyers.

Matter?

Why does this matter? Who cares? Most of us are too busy filling trying to fill the gas tank and afford food to concern ourselves with who should be the next liar for the CEO of USA, Inc. _ "Traditionally, White House press secretaries are plucked from obscurity and placed in front of the feeding frenzy of the MSM. Who had heard of Ari Fleischer, Scott McClellan, or Dana Perino before their move to the big stage?" Feeding frenzy? Really? You mean like the one that nails the administration for committing war crimes? Violating the Constitution? Torture? Spying? The PATRIOT Act? Yeah right. As for Ari Fleischer, Scott McClellan, or Dana Perino, their claim to fame comes from their uncanny ability at being lying sacks of you know what for the liar-in-chief. Just great BF. Who fills the next sack now is an issue of importance for you.

So,vtjozef, WTF are you HERE if you hate BuzzFlash so much?

Why aren't you out valorously stumping for your racist Lost Cause, Nader - or better, patting THE NEW YORKER on the back for their hil-ARIOUS cover depicting Obama as bin Laden and Michelle as Angela Davis?

Yeesh - no WONDER the Right has managed to steamroll us for so long, with "allies" like you....

Ah. The misinterpretation.

There is no hate there. Show me the hate? I could care less about the New Yorker. I don't read it. Evidently, you do. Nader isn't a racist. You sucked up the media spin of that comment didn't you? Who shives a git about the cartoon. Bad taste. Well yes. So what? I am not your friggin' ally. Nor the Democrats. The reason the Right can steam roll over you is because you offer only the same corporate candidates that suck and stab you in the back. Candidates like Al Gore, who get defeated in an election by a small intellect like George Bush and who don't fight for their rightly won election. You enable the Right by supporting Democrats as Republican enablers. How many Democrats voted for the Iraq occupation? NAFTA? The PATRIOT Act? FISA/immunity? You kill Iraqis by supporting a candidate that votes for funding of the war's continuation. A candidate who doesn't call for impeachment and indictment of the criminals YOU and HE know occupy the White House? Yeah, I know. Obama has to SHUT UP like John Conyers was forced to shut up the sake of electoral expediency. F the Constitution, eh? You, and Democrats, are in fact, the Right. Aren't you? Finally, it is YOU who want to win in November election with Obama? No? Tell me then, how are you going to do that by alienating people like me, Nader supporters, independents, and Green People. You still don't get it do you?

No, YOU Don't Get It, VTJozef

You've ALREADY made it abundantly clear you have no intention of voting for Obama, and you're not my ally, either. What you ARE is a self-righteous, bitter Third-Party apologist who'd rather pick loser after loser rather than "dirty your hands" by voting for somebody w/an actual chance of, you know, winning so you, like me, can build from there....

...Oh, never mind. I don't know why I bother trying to explain to you, anyway. You're like my wife's ex-boyfriend - so busy posing like Milton's Lucifer on the rocks and cursing the tides that you never bother to accomplish anything. I'll bet you've never even bothered to check out National Popular Vote , b/c they may have to actually ::ick! poo!:: compromise to change things.

By now, you're just a troll - same as Yman, ThomasM, Neva Stolz and the rest of that sorry lot. Obama would have to do a LOT worse than he's done over the past few weeks to convince me to vote against him - that's how bad it's gotten, in case you're so busy searching for Your Perfect Candidate to notice.

Like you said "Doc" - "My Response Is "So?"

Only half an hour after bitching and moaning about vtjozef being a "bitter Third-Party apologist who'd rather pick loser after loser rather than "dirty your hands" by voting for somebody w/an actual chance of, you know, winning", you defend the right of people to vote for a third party candidate if they choose, even suggesting it might be a good thing.

"We DO allow third parties in our elections, and they have a right to run - and if people are disaffected with their Democratic or Republican party choices, they have the right to vote their "None of the Above" displeasure. If enough people poll for a third-party candidate like McKinney or Barr in Georgia, it might be the wakeup call Obama needs to prevent his distressing "Race to the Right and Call it the Center".... Submitted by drprodny on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 3:05pm

Wow, Doc ................ make up your mind already.

Wait a second ................................ are you an Obama campaign adviser?

McCain Maggot Y(es)man

Maggot, you are so enlightening. Better yet, you should try shoving a dynamite stick up your behind and then light the fuse.

Yes, I did, vtjozef - b/c you have a RIGHT

to throw your vote away in some moment of pique that nobody's supporting Your Perfect Candidate - and I would never in a million years take that right away from you.

As for the rest? You're still a Naderite troll - and if my opinion seems "inconsistent" to you, then maybe you're missing the point of upholding your right to do whatever stupid thing you please, while retaining my right to call you stupid and spoiled for trumpeting your Lost Cause endlessly like some virtue while sliming an imperfect man who is still, flaws and all, The Best Choice We Have To Turn America Around....

Press Secretary

Rachel Maddow.

Gaming the Ref Much?

Bush hiring Tony Snow as his pet flack is precisely the kind of insider clubbiness I thought Obama is trying to change. Yes, it'd be brutal to see the MSM jump down Obama's throat after all the nether-kisses they've given The Traitor Bush for the past eight years - but it's part of that continuum of decisions that will show us if Obama is sincere about undoing the Right's damage, or if he keeps Playing it Safe and losing the momentum he himself built.
