John Edwards bows out
BE-ELECTED
by Chad Rubel
The brokered convention strategy, the staying in the race to keep the other candidates honest, the potential to be a kingmaker (or queenmaker) -- these seemed viable reasons to be in the race.
Now, barring a last-minute appearance from a white male, the Democratic Party nominee for 2008 will be either a) a woman or b) an African-American male. (Sorry, Mike Gravel.)
I thought he would be the 2004 nominee in 2002, when my non-political friends had no idea about this Senator from North Carolina. The 2004 campaign showed promise, but this campaign had a few problems. Ironically, on the issues, he did a better job in 2008.
Whether this is Edwards' last presidential campaign is debatable, and perhaps too soon to speculate. Sometimes, timing is crucial to ultimately being the nominee. Edwards ran a hell of a campaign in 2004, but lost out on the experience factor. Then after gaining that experience in running, and you would have figured that he would be a viable alternative to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama stole that thunder.
It's also a little sad since one of his greatest strengths, his wife, Elizabeth, and perhaps the reason he stayed in the race this long, may not be around 4 or 8 years from now to see whether he tries again.
John Edwards brought a shining light to people who have been long neglected by the federal government. For that, we owe him a great deal of thanks. And we hope that his light continues to shine on them.
Recent speculation has linked John Edwards to a possible reward as Attorney General in a Democratic nomination. The John Edwards we have seen on the campaign trail would make a great Attorney General. We could do (and have done) a lot worse.

I, too, am sorry to see John Edwards bow out. Like you, I saw him as a bright light shining in this past year or so. I would be exceptionally sorry if his immense talent is not used in some capacity for the better good of this country. Yes, he would make a great Attorney General. From our lips to God's ears!
The Breck Boy
You know what one of the funniest things about John Edwards is? He couldn't win re-election to the Senate from his own state of NC, so he decided to inflict us with his liberal blather...for years.
He does have pretty hair though.

Good Riddance
Edwards has been campaigning since he lost the last election in 2004...and he couldn't even last until Super Tuesday. Geesh.
I can't believe he wasted everyone's time blathering on about "the two Americas"...all the while, he was building his 26,000 sf mansion in Chapel Hill.
What a fool.
Trolls not wanted
How stupid do people have to be to not understand that even rich, successful people just might have some genuine empathy for those less fortunate than themselves. I don't hear Murph the troll excoriating Bill and Melinda Gates for "pretending to care about poor people". All you are doing is making an ass of yourself!
As for John Edwards, it is sad to see him have to drop out of the race, but I feel sure his advocacy for the poor and disenfranchised will not end here. Godspeed, and best wishes to Elizabeth and the kids.
GO-BAMA!!! Edwards did the right thing at the right time AGAIN
way to go edwards, my first choice... by bailing he leaves 80% of his votes to OBAMA and short circuits the gop-lite hillary....
I ADMIRE EDWARDS...
...BALLS OF STEEL
Good Call!
I haven't looked at that way before but -- WOW! You are right!
This really smacks Hillary (I should have been a Republican) right in the face.
Now only two choices; Hillary or Obama.
Another Clinton to help the poor vote rich or a black man that is going to screw the corporations to the ground.
Which will it be Democrats? Old way or the new way?
Remember that Hillary sat on the board of Directors for Wal-Mart. That is the same union busting, low wages, no health insurance Wal-Mart we all know wiped out small town American Ma and Pa shops and replaced them with Super Centers.
Go back to Wal-Mart Hillary. I'd like to see my wages go up and not stagnate like they did under your husband's administration.
