Bush Administration Has Been Using Illegal Wiretapping and Spying Activity for Political Purposes. Doubt It?

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

In an under covered trial in a California courtroom, a Constitutional drama of major significance is unfolding.

It is a federal lawsuit filed by Americans who claim that the Bush Administration, with the cooperation of AT&T, illegally spied on them. The Bush Administration has taken the Orwellian position that the trial must not be allowed to proceed because it would require the White House to reveal if they indeed have illegally monitored the plaintiffs – and that, the Bush Politburo argues, would violate "state secrets."

Why do we sometimes think that we are living in the Soviet-era, Stasi run East Germany?

Maybe that’s because a headline last week read, "US moves to use spy satellites for domestic surveillance."

Or maybe, returning to the trial in California, that the White House refused to sign a document assuring the court that their "eavesdropping" was not being used domestically under the guise of claiming it was being used to stop terrorism:

But the 9th Circuit judges were skeptical. They wondered why at least one key issue cannot be explored -- whether there was domestic spying on Americans without court approval, which civil liberties lawyers say violates the law.

Judges Margaret McKeown and Michael Daly Hawkins, both Clinton appointees, cited public comments by President Bush and other administration officials denying any such warrantless domestic surveillance, and asked the government why it can't provide similar statements under oath in the court case.

McKeown, who stressed that she didn't expect Bush himself to provide the sworn statements, questioned how such evidence would jeopardize national security.

And when an AT&T lawyer later told the judges that Bush has already issued denials publicly, Hawkins said that public statements aren't the equivalent of statements under oath in court or in court declarations.

"No court in the land would be satisfied with public statements, be it the president of the United States or the president of AT&T," Hawkins said.

In short, we once again have the White House playing the game of we’ll talk with you, but we won’t testify under oath because then you can legally charge us with perjury because, of course, we’re going to lie.

But this is about spying on American citizens.

Reaching back into the recesses of our memory, we recall that in one of Alberto Gonzales’s farcical appearances before Congress – when the FISA illegal eavesdropping first broke in The New York Times (after they sat on the story for a year) – Gonzales was asked if the spying might have been used for domestic purposes other than terrorism. Gonzales responded, in essence, that he couldn’t say for sure.

In a recent BuzzFlash editorial, we noted that the acquisition of domestic spying powers for political purposes was one of three key strategies in the Republican effort to achieve long-term control of the United States apparatus of government.

With domestic spying powers just recently legally expanded by a Democratic Congress to include, according to The New York Times, certain types of physical searches on American soil and the collection of Americans' business records, the Bush Administration now has legal authority to achieve what Nixon attempted to do illegally in the Watergate burglary.

And if the Democratic Party were to sue over a modern day Watergate-style operation, the Bush Administration would tell the court that it can’t reveal why it conducted the spying operation on a political party because it would violate national security.

This is not BuzzFlash idle speculation; it is what the Bush Administration, now enabled by the lack of caucus discipline in a Democratic Congress, has achieved.

God help us all.

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

Spying

Like millions of Americans, I suspected this Bush crowd from the beginning of their rise to power. It seems like every day a new scandal involving this administration begins to arise for public scrutiny. In less than a decade this Nation has transgressed from a just and civil society into a third rate banana republic. If we allow these crimes to go unpunished, we deserve the abyss.

H.R. 1955

I just saw a video of a synopsis of H.R. 1955 and it is incredibly scary. What is even more disturbing is that a majority of house members voted for it. I think our government is so corrupt and so "evil" that unless the people rise up there is no hope. It does not matter who is elected when corporations are running the country and lobbyists are writing the laws. Who are these immoral individuals that are so enamored of money and power that they would throw their own children and grandchildren under the bus. We all need to wake up! I am voting for Edwards. I think Hillary is part of the problem and Obama sounds wonderful, but "they" will destroy him as he is too inexperienced. But with Diebold machines, voter caging and the like, we will probably end up with Huckabee or McCain (whom I think needs psychiatric help).

I am seriously thinking about moving to another country.

Then there is Sibel Edmonds and her absolutely frightening story that MSM won't even touch.

Come on people, we need to stand up, but then there is H.R. 1955 and we will all be arrested (or shot) to never be seen again for standing up for what is right.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure this is really happening in a country I used to believe in.

Oh, the synopsis is at www.brasscheckTV.com

The "axis of evil" is Bush, Cheney and Rove.

Not Just Political Purposes

I have little doubt that the domestic spying is being used for political purposes, but I think it also has another intent. All of the data-mining is being done by outside contractors and few government/CIA/NSA watchdogs are monitoring the data collection. So if the data bases get sold off for additional profits, who would know? The data bases could then be 'mined' for other information, marketing, insider corporate information for stock manipulation, etc, etc. Think about it - it's a business bonanza!

buzzflash editorial

I agree 100% with your editorial. The scary part is the way they
are getting control of the country as we all sit by doing nothing.

They're Doing It Because They're Desperate & They Ain't Stupid

They know what's in store for them once we force Congress to cut off all funding for the Iraq war, so, no matter the cost, they're doing whatever they can to prevent such from happening. And they'll get away with it too, their fascist coup, unless right away we end the war in Iraq, after which, empowered by our victory over the powers that be, the only thing that Bush/Cheney/Rove et al will have to look forward to is their impeachment trial, followed, of course, by their being put on trial at the International Court of Criminal Justice. What a glorious moment that'll be, when, with the whole world watching, the presiding judge turns to the jury and says, "Members of the jury, on the charge of crimes against humanity, how do you find the defendents?" "Guilty as charged, your honor."

Spying on Americans From Day One!

I sincerely believe that this gang of thugs have been playing their spy games since they seized office in 2000.
Less than three months after their arrival the SS (Secret Service) turned up at my front door telling me that they had grabbed an email that I wrote to a Florida legislator (copies to Jeb & George). The SS agents told me that they had seized my email with their Carnivore program.
When that happened I posted in a number of forums that this was only the beginning. I was called a nut case for saying that these guys had big plans for shutting up U.S. Citizens who were doing nothing more than expressing an opinion. http://www.granniesagainstgeorge.us/secret_service_man.htm

A month later the "Free Speech" zones were established to keep people from protesting king george & three grandparents were arrested for trying to enter one of his public appearances in Tampa, FL.
http://www.granniesagainstgeorge.us/welcome_to_amerika__bush_style.htm

I have been posting since that day in April 2001 that the Bush/Cheney thugs were spying on us. I have read all the excuses that members of Congress & the media have given for the obscene laws, etc. that have been passed. Support for an illegal war..no problem. FISA changed to make illegal activities legal... You betcha'...Done just for you George!

I am convinced that at the very least key members of Congress have been blackmailed and continue to be blackmailed with the info that has been gathered by this dictatorship. What else could explain the actions of this Congress?

The next question, of course, is what kind of information has Bush/Cheney gathered that could silence this Congress? What about our so-called media? Are they being blackmailed too?

Really Only Distractions, Nothing New

This is really not new.The only difference now is which agencies have access to the data.
What most are missing is their real enemies and who they are paying most attention to are the ones with the truth.
That is who they have been and will continue to monitor. They must.No choice.Legal or no.At this point legal is meaningless.
When they say us or them.Their "us" are very few.
Anyone with the whole truth from before 2000 all the way through now and into 2010-2011-2012,or even parts of the truth are the main problem/s they face.Their entire agenda at this point is keeping things going without disruption.
You would have thought nancy would have come out with guns blazzing and just shaken everything to pieces. Then let some sane people come in and start over.
Really, after all she's a grown-up,got tons of support and will be re-elected as long as she wants to take that seat.
Hmmmmmm what happened?nancy?You there?
You know it's been clear for some time the only reason there are two parties any longer is so one can blame the other why nothing gets done for the people.
If there were not 2 at least names of parties then who would they have to blame for stealing all the money and leaving the population with nothing?
The crooks all put on suits and learned to chew with their mouths closed.Does that qualify them for anything?
These guys(and girls)are pulling off the biggest heist ever imagined right in front of the world.
Who's the fool/s??
Don't forget kennyronlay who mastered stealing accross the board is a hero to these guys.Bottom line is bottom line.He mastered stealing from everyone. From governments like india and cali to the janitors at his buildings.Everyone.
Sound familiar??

Good Democrats

There really hasn't been one since Paul Wellstone was killed.

As far as taking to the streets: Hell Yes!

My war cry: "Vote Everyone Out"!!

To really fix our problems: Everyone who is unhappy, go to your local City Hall on Labor Day. Even if the press doesn't cover it, we can at least see we aren't alone.

Our Government has become a joke

We no longer have a democracy. Our government has become so disfunctional that it is a joke. "Conventional wisdom" (My ass) has always been that the problem is partisanship. It turns out that both parties are singing from the same choir book. The people be damned, we're here only to fight their war and make sure we keep coughing up the cash to pay for it. I forgot, there is no cash. They are using our country to borrow from China to keep lining their pockets with riches wrought from our military's blood. We should form peace caravan all across the country and converge on the capitol and put the whole lot on trial for treason. With this "great economy" which has created so many jobs at Walmart alot of us have nothing better to do.

Vote none of the same next time

The Republicans brought us fascism and the Democrats paid lip service to stopping it and voted it in anyway. We can only stop further assaults on our liberty by ending one party rule. There really is little difference between the two major parties now, no matter how much the Democrats scream that there is.

The Democrats have a majority in Congress and we still have the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and they supported the dreadful enhancements to the FISA Law. We still sanction torture, renditions, secret prisons, and searches and eavesdropping without warrants. Tell me how the Democrats are different.

It is time to rid our democracy of BOTH groups of self serving thugs, Republicans AND Democrats.

Re: Paranoid is a functional state of mind.

bewildered I read comments on several blogs. There is always a group of individuals who want to throw all politicians out of office, but they never say just how to do that. I consider the possibility that it is a "Fair and Balanced" tactic. In any campaign the goal is to get the most votes from whatever the source. The next best thing is to get your opponents supporters to stay home. Same result, you get more votes than the opposition. That is why negative campaigning is effective. It may not get you any more votes, but it reduces the turnout for your opponent. This is a progressive forum. A perfect place to undermine support for Democrats and Obama supporters. I do not know your intentions, I only suggest the possibility. If you are truly saying, A pox on both their houses, do you say the same things on any Republican or Conservative blogs?

Bushist Nonsense

A bird from your hand is worth two from Bush's. We the People ARE the Constitution, if we live it. And we control the money it is always said to follow. Stop land phone service and like the "terrorists", start using disposable cell phones. This eliminates an expensive service in favor of a far more economical one. It also cuts the Bushist-collusive corporate "Bells" off at the bills. Then, stop buying corporate Bushit across the board. The economic jujitsu of such citizen boycotting will bring down the the BushCo-dependent juggernaut soon enough.

Nazi America

Why is it that Bush/Cheney don't give a damn what anyone thinks? They don't care about what the voters think. They don't care what Congress thinks. Why is this?

Is it because they know something that the rest of us don't?

Is it because they KNOW that they will NOT be leaviing office?

Is it because they KNOW that there won't be another election?

Is it because they KNOW something is going to happen that will facilitate the final destruction of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; the implementation of martial law; the filling of the concentration camps being constructed by KBR; the end of life as we know it in the US?

Why?

Complicity by Democrats

What puzzles me about all of Bush's signing statements and pushing the boundaries of the law is that he only has a relatively short time left in office. It seems to me the ones who would have the best opportunity to implement his successes at corrupting the constitution would be whoever succeeded him. Right now that looks like a Democrat and if polls are correct Hillary Clinton is the odds on favorite.

By appearances it seems as though the right wing doesn't want Hillary. Yet, their criticisms seem lame to all except the dimmest of their base. In reality I think of all the Democratic candidates Clinton would be their first choice.

She walks and talks like a neocon in my opinion. I think that Hillary Clinton is part of the neocon cabal that is presently running the show, along with Rahm Emmanuel, Steney Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats in leadership positions. I think that Barack Obama is their back up guy.

I haven't heard anything from Obama that makes me believe that he wasn't annointed by the powers that be. I actually find him to be quite vacuous and banal.

The speed in which the Democrats have given Bush everything he wanted suggests to me there is a game afoot which looks like collusion.

I think they are playing a game of allowing Clinton and Obama to vote against war appropriations to keep their base from deserting them, and giving them plausible deniability. I wont forget their earlier votes however.

The media machine coupled with military psyops know exactly how to position whoever they want to be the leading candidate.
Niether Clinton nor Obama have ever taken a strong progressive position on anything.Clinton supported the war in Iraq wholeheartedly despite her equivocations as did Obama. Both of them had ample opportunity to use their notability to make strong stands on it and both remained mute. Niether of these candidates have authored any progressive legislation.
Obama's speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention was a setup a media spectacle to ingratiate him with the public and give him name recognition. It was a ploy to mainstream him an prime his future Presidential candidacy. The speech he made was mediocre, tepid, unpoignant and unremarkable, yet it was depicted by the media as a moving crowd pleaser. I listened to endless streams of how he was the future of the party blah blah blah. I felt a total disconnect from what the media was saying and what I heard out of Obama. I knew that this was the ruling class annointment of a future Presidential candidate.

Then there is Hillary Clinton. Some big quid pro quo must have been promised to the ruling class for her to win the Senate seat from NY since she was a native of Illinois and didn't even live in NY. Could it be any more obvious that the Senate was only a springboard for her Presidential bid.

Dennis Kucinich is running for President to make progressive structural changes in the way this country works including making it uncorrupt and more Democratic. There is no question how Kucinich feels about the Iraq war, the neocons, globalism, etc. Clinton and Obama are running for President to support the status quo, obfuscating their agenda with rhetorical florishes, and stylistic pretenses of being progressive.

Obama

For the record, Obama voted against authorizing the war in the first place.

A great country???

People around me thinks I would never survive in a underdeveloped country like jamiaca or any of those other country's by the beach, living in a house that not much more than a tent... WELL YOU KNOW WHAT, I COULD!!! To get away from all this crap-I would. The spying via satellite- Since I moved to [address deleted. BF: Please don't post personal info like this], I have been hearing loud clicking noises in my television at night when I go to bed. Or if I am the only one in the apartment, when I go in the kitchen or leave the living room, I hear those loud clicking noises. The television in ONLY in the house because the other person I am living with wants it-they can have the TV-I am completely happy with a radio. Anyway, I wonder, just what is up with those clicking noises in my TV. Also, if it is someone spying through the TV, just what do they think they are going to see??? WHAT????? I am as normal as everyone else. When I told police officers in Plano TX and attorney's one real smart ass in Frisco, about my phones being listened too, they told me I was crazy. They are entitled to their opinion, but do not expect me to go along with the opinion-I do not care who they are. or how many people are saying the same thing, very seldom convinces me-esp when the wording is verbatim. People knew my specific conversations that I said only in my house or on the phone. I said specific things to check. Sure enough, it always showed up somewhere else. All this ridiculousness, is to take away everyones freedom. It started with small topics, like auto insurance, raising drinking age, seat belts, then they went crazy with these laws, and now-here we are! I would happily leave to go live on an island by myself-If I left yesterday, it would not be soon enough.

The phone perhaps, the TV probably not...

Kathy...

First and foremost I must caution you in regards to your posting of your address on any open forum on the "Internets". This is simply a bad practice given the unknowns of who might read the post and what their agenda might be. Nuff said on that...

Second as an electrical engineer I can pretty much assure you that your television is a one way device in that the circuitry within does not have the capability to monitor and transmit information back to anyone. Your telephone (cell or land line) on the other hand CAN be monitored in such a manner. This is why there is so much brew ha-ha about the "secret rooms" that major telco carriers have allow to be installed in their switching centers by "our" government. From that point of access, 'they' (the FBI, NSA, etc.) can monitor any phone lines they choose. Also the days of needing someone to actually listen to conversations are long gone. In these days of advanced technology, vocal recognition software can be used to detect key words and phrases, and automatically identify "suspects" for further investigation.

There's a very good chance that the clicking you're hearing from your television is indicative of a problem with the unit, not some nefarious attempt to monitor your life.

Peace,
TJ

How close are we to martial law being declared in the U.S.??

All the signs (connected dots) are pointing to the imminent order from the Bush White House for nationwide martial law, with all the domestic intelligence-gathering "tools" now in place to keep an eye and ear on everyone.

All BushCo needs now is some domestic event to trigger the call for martial law. Some event, maybe, like a terrorist attack inside our borders. An event that some wingnuts recently have been hoping for, with the intent they say of uniting us like after 9/11. Right. More like uniting us all under a Bush declaration of martial law.

So, one scenario that more than likely would cause a terrorist event inside the U.S.:

Bush and Cheney launch an attack against Iran. (Just the other day, Bush and Cheney declared the Qod's Unit of the Iranian Republican Guard to be a terrorist organization).

Iran retaliates, and some Iranian agents succeed in blowing up something inside the U.S., killing countless U.S. citizens.

Bush and Cheney declare a national emergency, ordering martial law nationwide. (Versus martial law in the immediate area surrounding the "ground zero" site of any future domestic terrorist event).

Like I stated, the dots keep piling up indicating that Bush and Cheney, while planning an attack against Iran, are also preparing for martial law being instituted by them following an attack on Iran.

Any attack by them against Iran will cause a huge increase in calls for their removal from office. They think that a subsequent terrorist attack inside the U.S. following their attack on Iran will cause U.S. citizens to rally behind them. But just in case, they have prepared for martial law being declared nationwide with secret domestic surveillance programs, including spy eyes in the sky, plus a report the other day that DHS is organizing pastors into "Clergy Response Teams" to help allay and quell any citizen unrest following a declaration of nationwide martial law.

I'm just saying that if any bombs are dropped on Iran, then within a short time afterward our nation will be locked down under martial law ordered by the worst and most corrupt administration in American history.

The U.S. has become a "one party" government

a dictatoship brought to us by the Demopublicans.......

They already have Demo-Rats by the Shorthairs

Hey Folks,

Read between the lines. Re-thug-licans spy domestically on their enemy Demo-rats and then dare them to take any action to remove them at risk of having their dirty laundry exposed.

Got to be something like that going on for those newly elected Demo-rats to turn against the wishes of the people regardless of how loud we holler for removal of the Re-thug-licans.

Yep, heaven help us all, cause that pack of dirty creeps we elected to remove the other pack of creeps and liars are acting in collusion.

We the people no longer matter.

Fearmongering and propaganda

Wasn't the invasion of Iraq based partly on the fact that Saddam Hussein was a tyrant? Didn't Hussein use police state tactics (including torture) to intimidate the public and ensure that he maintained power?

The President is making the case that he cannot do his job without resorting to the Saddam Hussein play book. Thus, he is unfit for office and should be impeached.

It doesn't matter...

It doesn't matter who robs us of our freedom, either way the terrorists win...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBK_l2AQ4I8

We're losing it people, spread the word.

One more reason.......

Just one more reason why we should throw these facists in prison and charge them with treason, war crimes, torture, murder, VIOLATIONS OF THE U S CONSTITUTION, etc. Then, carry out the sentence for same.

Where in Hell is the Democratic congress we voted in?

Andrew, At HairplusGallery a Renton Barber shop
It is way past time for us the people to take our democratic representives as well as the republicans out of office, they are doing the Republican agenda of destroying this country, with Pelosi and Reeds apparent help. Where are the real Democrats or Independants.
Pretty much find the entire congress to be a huge joke ...on us. We have leaders far worse than Saddam. They talk of a complete melt down of our economy, a devaluing of the dollar by maybe 50% Now what do we do. While congress and the president are taking the summer off. Attorney General that cannot recall anything, was he left behind to run the store? God I hope not!

here's your real democratic Party

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUEQz5dltmI Sorta like one from the 1940's

Democratic Congress?

No such thing as a "Democratic Congress". It reminds me of the gang that can't shoot straight. Virtually every democratic senator and most of the democratic representatives are so concerned about their electability or re-electability that they have forgotten to keep their eyes on the target. They have let fear coerce them into caving to the cheney/bush administration on everything that is meaningful to maintaining our form of government. They have therefore become complicit in what is happening to our country. The repukes let the dems win one every now and then, as with the minimum wage, but filibuster all other important legislatural issues.

I am so disheartened, and feel so helpless, that I have recently left the Democratic Party, re-registering as a "declines to state". A simple form of protest, but nevertheless, one that I hope many who feel as I do will take up. We have to get the message to the dems that we elected them for a reason - and that the reason was not to watch them get down on their knees to bush and his corrupt adminstration!

We have Two Choices

We either stay in the streets like the people of Russia did until this government falls and we can establish a new one...

or we vote for anybody but the incumbent all across America in every city and county from stem to stern. Leave no incumbent in office from dog catcher to president.

Do you think we have that kind of time?

Not all incombents deserve to be voted out

There are a lot of good Democrats who deserve to stay. As far as everyone else in congress is concerned, I am with you. Vote them out! Plus we should impeach five members of the Supreme Court for their unconstitutional decisions.

Not all but most

Party aside there are few who truly represent the citizens of America . With every piece of legislation that is encumbered with pork I seethe and promise to vote out the incumbents of BOTH parties. But what is the alternative this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUEQz5dltmI Communist Socialism?
