Our Troops Have Not Failed: Bush and Cheney Have Failed Our Troops

A BuzzFlash Editorial

In today’s BuzzFlash interview with author Larry Beinhart (who wrote the book that the movie "Wag the Dog" was based on), he astutely comments on Bush and Cheney gambling with lives in Iraq as if GIs were poker chips:

The Bush-Cheney situation right now is like this: They've gone to Vegas. Their stake was $200,000. They're down $300,000. If they get up and they leave the table, everyone knows they went to Vegas, lost their shirt, plus some more. If they stay there and keep betting, one of two things is going to happen. Either a miracle is going to occur, and somehow they'll suddenly win the war, or there will be a new election and they will be magically whisked away from their seats. Somebody else will be sitting there and become responsible for the losses.

When you have no one in your extended families in the military – or even relatives of your elitist group of rulers – it’s easy to bet with the lives of others, easy to double down. It’s like a mayor going to Vegas with the town’s tax collections. He’s got none of his dollars at risk. (That’s the problem of having a government composed primarily of AWOL from combat monarchists. At least in England, the royal progeny serve in the military.)

We have been reviewing some video clips of Bush’s statements on the Iraq war since the infamous "Mission Accomplished" moment -- not to mention Cheney’s "last throes of the insurgency" claims and the like -- and this documented evidence only confirms that our soldiers have been betrayed by hustlers. Bush and Cheney don’t support our troops; they sacrifice them for their own vainglory, because being perceived as "losing" in the culture of hyper-masculinity – this "victory culture" -- is more than they can handle.

So, though Bush stated in his infamous "Mission Accomplished" declaration in 2003, "Major combat operations have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country," more than four years later major combat operations have never ceased.

As we looked at tapes of Bush archived on the Net, we watched glowing assessments by Bush of the "success" and "progress" in Iraq. Yet all the time, he was letting down our GIs, because the situation on the ground was deteriorating and becoming more dangerous every day.

Under the guidance of propaganda gurus, the White House and Pentagon have played a daily game of prestidigitation with the facts. They have turned fictions into perceived realities, with the general acquiescence of the mainstream media (with some rare exceptions, such as the McClatchy news chain).

One example of this re-creation of "reality" at every new sunrise is the number of times that the White House has announced a "new way" in Iraq to placate those who see the travesty of this botched and senseless conflict. We have had, essentially, a new way, a new new way, a new new new way … and running out of space, the White House on July 10 switched from a "new way" to a "new message" without even bothering to pretend there was anything new in substance going on with the Bush/Cheney failed military and diplomatic tactics.

Most recently, on the turn of a dime, we woke up to the mainstream press following lockstep with the White House suddenly calling all the opponents in Iraq "Al-Qaida" instead of "insurgents." This is a bold propaganda move, particularly considering that the general consensus is that Al-Qaida composes less than 5% of the insurgency in Iraq. In fact, as BuzzFlash has pointed out many a time, a Washington Post poll indicated that the overwhelming majority of Iraqis, alas, support armed attacks on American GIs.

It is like we are watching a magician saw a woman in half, only to find, in the end, when he puts the two halves of the boxes together that she is dead because there is no illusion: he has really cut her in two.

That is the monstrosity of the so-called "War in Iraq." The Republicans and few Democrats who continue to support the White House’s commitment to "stay the mistake" don’t support our troops; they betray them, and they undermine the national security of America.

After four years of failed promises, of evolving propaganda and excuses, of egomaniacal behavior (Cheney) run amuck and a stunted growth (Bush) photo-op presidency, it is time to stop gambling with the lives of our GIs and time to stop outsourcing our military.

Cheney and Bush are playing poker with our money and the lives of people we know. They have put nothing of their own down on the table – not the lives of their kin or the fortunes in their banks.

It is time to support our troops, not betray them any longer.

It is time to bring them home – and to hold Bush, Cheney and the other architects of this national disgrace accountable under the Constitution and the rule of law.

Our brave men and women fighting honorably deserve no less.

Proof The Government DOES NOT support the Troops!

I don't know about you, but after I read the below article in the "Army Times," my first reaction was one of disgust and amazement, especially when President Bush is constantly stating he "supports the troops" - and then by his actions, contradicts himself! Even worse is America's complicit mainstream news media, who by refusing to report and editorialize on stories that would shock the conscience of the nation - simply ignore important news to support a government they are complicit with - too cowardly and greedy to sound the alarm and help save their own country! What happened to the investigative reporting we remember from the N.Y Crimes, or the Washington Compost? Almost gone, like our freedoms and democracy...

Iraq commanders say no to breaks in combat

By Gregg Zoroya - USA Today
Posted : Tuesday Jun 19, 2007 17:28:26 EDT

WASHINGTON — U.S. commanders in Iraq are rejecting a recommendation by Army mental health experts that troops receive a one-month break for every three months in a combat zone, despite unprecedented levels of continuous fighting and worsening risks of mental health problems.

Instead, commanders are trying to give troops two to three days inside heavily fortified bases after about eight days in the field, said Brig. Gen. Joseph Anderson, chief aide to the ground forces commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno.

“We would never get the job done of securing [of Baghdad] if we went out for three months and came back” for one, Anderson said.

U.S. forces in Iraq spend more time in continuous combat without a break than those who fought in Vietnam and World War II, according to Army psychologists who studied troops in Iraq.

U.S. commanders can’t match the World War II policy, Odierno said in a news conference late last month. “Even in World War II and other times ... we would pull forces off the line and bring them back on. Here we don’t do that,” Odierno said. “They [U.S. troops] are out there consistently every single day. So you have to be mentally and physically tough.”

President Bush committed 28,000 more troops to Iraq this year as part of an escalation that started in February.

Army psychologists say continual combat may cause more mental health problems. Their research, conducted in Iraq last year, shows that 30 percent of soldiers and Marines experiencing high levels of combat demonstrate signs of anxiety, depression or acute stress. MORE

I checked CNN to see if they carried this story - but found that "Anna Nicole Smith's weepy judge retiring," and "Judge Judy: 'Vacant' Paris Hilton deserved jail Video" were considered to be more important than our troops being mistreated, forced into fighting for their lives to the point of breaking - all because we have a President that is too cowardly or stupid, or maybe a combination of both, to do the right thing!

I haven't checked the rest of the networks, and am not picking on CNN exclusively, just presenting an example of an organization that constantly reminds us they provide the best world-wide coverage - of what now appears to be gossip! CNN, my apology, but I could care less about Anna Nicole Smith's Judge or Paris Hilton's incarceration when US troops are being slaughtered on the ground in Iraq - and in some cases, their deaths may often be attributed to battle-fatigue, too exhausted and worn-out to react fast enough, or miss a crucial detail that would have saved their lives... Why hasn't the media raised hell about that?

And what would a responsible President do in the face of extended deployments, a financial crisis that threatens to bankrupt the country, and a military worn so thin that America would be hard-pressed to send troops to another crisis that erupted somewhere else in the world, or even a threat from our southern borders! Even the Neo-conservatives and warmongers should be concerned about an America that is so over-stretched militarily that we can't even give our own troops a break, or something as minor as protecting the country from other dangerous situations that could arise; heck, maybe we can mobilize the Boy Scouts if there's another natural disaster, and they can use Tonka Toys instead of the vital rescue equipment that's been sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Oh, about the "right thing" the President should do... What would you do if you were the President? I know what I'd do, but it wouldn't be popular, or make everyone happy, but if you really support the troops, and want America to come out of this in one piece - it's time for someone in Washington to act responsibly, and do something to give our troops the support they really need, and protect a weakened United States from threats that could materialize because the rest of the world is acutely aware we're stretched to the limit! Who will be the first to take advantage of our President's folly? Frankly, I don't know, but I do know I'd feel better if we could defend ourselves without having to resort to nuclear weapons - and then use the excuse we didn't have the troops available to handle the situation any other way...

A real President would immediately reinstate the draft, political suicide of course, but why should that matter to a President who is already hated by the majority of America? If he won't abide by the mandate of the people and Congress, the least he could do is bring back the draft - and share this military responsibility equally among the people rather than beating down the same bunch of tired, over-deployed and exhausted soldiers. I'll bet if it's your sons or daughters caught in the never-ending quagmire of Iraq and Afghanistan you'd appreciate that they would get a break, and might even support such a solution - but you'd have to fight the GOP who will protect their party's sons and daughters to the end, just as they support a President that has lost the confidence of the nation - and trampled on our Constitution and Bill of Rights!

The nation is going further into debt as each day passes, and yet the President hasn't had the courage to ask "the people" to car-pool, cut off as much recreational driving as possible - and do everything in our power to conserve gas and oil, which would help to reduce the national debt. He hasn't levied any new taxes on bloated oil companies that reach new levels of profit everyday, nor has he cut-back on tax-breaks for the rich, another piece in the puzzle to help reduce the debt. In fact, I'm having a hard time thinking of one thing this President has done to help "the war effort" except to make sure his political friends and cronies receive the no-bid contracts that are draining our economy - stealing our tax dollars as surely as if they had held a gun to our heads, and then having the nerve to admonish Democrats for being fiscally irresponsible!

The bottom-line is that we need "a real President," one who isn't afraid or too arrogant to realize that he's in over his head - and the lives of 300 million Americans, plus those who may soon die in the Middle-east - are his responsibility - one that he has ignored and refused to accept. Tell you what, to hell with Congress and a news media that is controlled by Corporations; they're both worthless, refuse to do their patriotic duty, so here's what I suggest. Every American that can afford to do so should go to the store and buy a small bag of pretzels; send them to the White House addressed for President Bush. Enough bags of pretzels would send an undeniable message to our President - and the world at large. Maybe he'll get the hint...

Whose Troops?

They are not your troops. They are the troops of the rich, used to protect their wealth and build their empire. These same troops that you call your own can just as easily be used against you. Then you will find out who the soldiers are slaves to and whose orders they will follow.

A false flag terrorist attack, or a true one, in America will cause severe backlash from the public.

Imagine George Bush assassinated. Of course others will be accused, but Dick Cheney ordered it. He seizes power, completely backed by the military and making use of his own Praetorian Guard to protect him from the masses. Elections are canceled indefinitely. Martial law is declared. They are all dressed in black.

Can't happen in America? We pray that it won't, but...

Tolstoy's Ghost

I could be wrong...

I could be wrong... But my money is bet on Bush being impeached or resigning - and before the ink is even dry on his resignation papers, impeachment proceedings would be drawn-up against Dick Cheney.

I suppose I'm still somewhat of am idealist; I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around a military that would accept orders from either one of these clowns that they know are illegal, unconstitutional, and simply reek of bad military strategy. I am unaware of "what" the military is supposed to do when faced with an order they know is wrong, and we have already heard that several high ranking General's have stated they would resign their commissions in protest rather than begin an attack on Iran. If it's obvious to us as a people that our President is slightly off-balance (Jeez, what an understatement...), then it must also be a subject of much contention within the Pentagon. I have hopes that contingency plans are already drawn-up if the Executive Branch decides to over-rule Congress and the people, thereby endangering our military already deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan - and consequences of such an action that can only trigger our vivid imagination rather than the hard, cold facts the Pentagon is in possession of...

If I remember correctly, the commander of the fleet currently deployed in the Persian Gulf has already gone on record and stated there would be no attack on Iran during his watch - although I'll admit I'm not sure if he is still in charge - or it was simply rhetoric to satisfy the MSM. Anyway, I'm a hopeless believer in the American spirit, and to me, it's almost unfathomable to believe that so many of our trusted Generals and other staff would go along with a plan they know won't fly through Congress, is most likely illegal, and has the potential to start World War III if either China or Russia become involved.

At any rate, it's more than obvious that impeaching Bush and Cheney should be the nation's number one priority - especially if we plan to survive for another two hundred years as a Democratic Republic!

JAC

Neo-Fascist Nation

I thnk what we have to keep in mind is that the perfect mariage between the military, coporations and
religion is a fascist state and that is exactly what America has become. Eishenhower warned about it in his resignation speech and many have seen it coming for a long time. Paul Wolfowitz, one of the architects of the PNAC and the Iraq invastion (possibly also 9/11) stated that 'the media is the new currency.' Our main TV networks are now owned by 4 corporations, 2 of which are the biggest producers of weapons in the world. Nazi leader Herman Goering once remarked that it was easy to lead people into war, regardless of whether they resided within “a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.” All that was required, Goering argued, is for their government to “tell them they are being attacked, and [then] denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger.” The corporate media has done their dirty work.
But instead of outrage it appears that many Americans continue to be lulled into complacency by lullabies of propaganda and deceit, while those who exploit the war for self-aggrandizement and profit adroitly evade detection by camouflaging themselves in counterfeit garments of “patriotism.”
If this is left unchecked, those who seek to resurrect American democracy will soon become voices lost in space.

I honestly thought I had a comment to add...apparently I am unable to do so...this speaks for itself.
