Enough of "Symbolic" Dem Votes on Capitol Hill. Stop Acting Like You're Guilty of Something and Take Back the Power.

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram recently noted that BuzzFlash.com had awarded its weekly "Wings of Justice Award" to a Texas State Senator
:

State Sen. Mario Gallegos was recently honored for his efforts to help scuttle a bill that would have made voters show official identification at the polls.

Gallegos, D-Houston, had missed much of the 2007 legislative session while recovering from liver-transplant surgery. But in the waning days of the session, he brushed aside doctors' orders to attend the session's final days -- to make sure the voter ID bill didn't get through.

The liberal Web site BuzzFlash.com gave Gallegos its "Wings of Justice" award for his efforts.

"Because of the devotion of Mario Gallegos to democracy, the legislative clock ran out on the dastardly Texas Republicans," BuzzFlash said in its tribute.

Actually, as we noted in our "Wings of Justice Award" citation last week, Gallegos, at times, needed a hospital bed to recover on. It was temporarily placed next to the Texas senate chambers, until he was assured that the Republicans couldn’t pass the "Jim Crow" voter ID law that is so near and dear to Karl Rove’s plans for stealing in the election for the GOP in 2008.

You see, without the "no" vote of Gallegos, the bill would have passed – and the Republicans held off calling the bill, hoping that Gallegos would become incapacitated following his liver transplant and have to return to the hospital. Then, as is typical of the ruthless nature of Republicans, they would have called the legislation and passed the voter suppression law in the Lone Star State.

As we noted in our "Wings of Justice Award,"
"Too bad Gallegos isn't leading the charge on Capitol Hill in D.C. He has all the guts the Dems on the Hill lack."

Because we also observed:

BuzzFlash has warned again and again that the Republicans are not stopping their efforts to steal the 2008 election through a variety of undemocratic methods, including the suppression of votes. Greg Palast has also weighed in on this with a great deal of corroborating evidence.

Nothing proves this theory more than the fact that the U.S. Attorneys put into place largely to concoct flimsy charges of voter fraud -- to smear minority voters and help pass new "Jim Crow" laws in states -- are still in their positions. [Karl Rove’s protégé in Little Rock has since left his position as U.S. Attorney.]

Meanwhile, states with Republican legislatures are scrambling to pass onerous voter registration and polling place "verification" requirements designed to keeps tens of thousands of Democrats from ever voting.

Meanwhile, up in Washington, D.C., the Democrats keep running around like three blind mice. They continue to tout "symbolic" votes as victories, when what they need to do is act to remove powers from the Bush cabal, not just boast about toothless roll calls.

We’ve said since we began BuzzFlash in 2000 -- and we’ll say it again -- power is achieved by wielding power, not by retreating from it.

Right now, Bush, Cheney and Rove are still running ruinous foreign and domestic policies. Despite taking over both houses of Congress, due to the will of the people, the Democrats continue to exercise their newfound power with timidity and fearful caution.

The Democratic leadership, we dare say, is afraid to act. They have become the stereotype of hesitancy and waffling that the GOP echo chamber has created about them.

You don’t get the Devil out of your house by continuously "investigating" him – and then claiming you can’t find the smoking gun, when you’ve got bodies littering the committee hearing rooms.

Why is it that the Dems walk around like they are guilty of something, when they have the goods on the Bush Administration right in front of them?

The Republicans break the law and feel no guilt; the Dem leaders observe the law and act as if they have just committed a murder.

It doesn’t make any sense. And, frankly, why should the American people have confidence that the Dems will be strong on national security when they can’t even stand up to King George and Rasputin Cheney?

Translation: Denouncing Bush’s policies means nothing. All that matters is who’s got the power and who is willing to use their power.

It’s not about fighting words; it’s about fighting until you’ve run out of ammo.

Ask Mario Gallegos. Were that we had 51 of him as Democratic senators in D.C.

Then, you might see a little bit of fear in the eyes of Bush, Cheney and Rove.

But for now, the gruesome threesome are still sitting on top of the world, hardly intimidated by a group of Democrats who won’t even serve a subpoena, let alone end a war, impeach a law-breaking, perjured attorney general, or start the wheels in motion to hold Cheney and Bush accountable for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Mario, if you’re out of your hospital bed now, we need you right quick on Capitol Hill.

The Dems up there need a gut check, before the nuclear bombs start falling on Iran.

This is a good civic lessons for democrats and liberals...

You don't have the power in congress.

That's why nothing got done.

Vote Republican next time if you want things done.

:D

But They ARE Guilty

Of despicable, collaborating Democons.

"All That Matters Is Who's Got The Power & The Will To Use It"

Which means, considering how close we are to the abyss, that we best forget about our failed democracy. What then? Troops out now, that's what, whereupon, empowered by our victory over the powers that be, we go on to change the world.

When indignation is not enough

Bravo, Mario Gallegos, if more legislators felt as duty-bound to discharge their responsibilities per their elected charge, we would not be in the mess that currently passes for Congress. Mr. Gallegos possessed a rare opportunity to make the system work as it was designed, however, the Democrats in the Senate would be hard-pressed to come up with 60 votes without some Republican defections.

We can apply the whip to the backs of Democratic legislators until we drop dead of the effort; our castigation of Democrats will not and cannot change the number of votes required to pass any meaningful legislation or resolutions. They, and we are over-the-proverbial-barrel. The key to getting anything done remains the responsibility of the Republican Party and apparently too many of them were paying close attention to the brutal punishment that is delivered to anyone that "bucks" the directives of the "White House".

The "investigations" that are necessary to turn up the filth committed by this Administration are ongoing because that is the extent of what is allowed with power distributed as it currently is. Gonzales should have been impeached, though getting a bill of impeachment out of the House might also prove daunting. The Democrats have better numbers in the House but the party affiliation in the House is not a true measure of where their loyalties lie.

We can fuss and fume about the “spineless Democrats” but at the end of the day it is still up to us to keep the pressure on Congress as a whole. That election in 2006 had a bit of “doctoring” to assist Republicans in challenging races, they stole only the votes they thought they needed so as to not raise suspicions. The “over-votes” and “under-votes” were an embarrassing give-away that their little scheme hadn’t delivered as predicted. The 2008 election results are being manipulated as we watch the latest “Paris, Hilton comedy”. The Federal Prosecutors placed by the Bush Administration are coached to stop the Democratic voter fraud while “vote caging” (eliminating poor and minority voters from the rolls of eligible voters, including some that are serving in the military, in Iraq, and cannot answer letters sent to their last known stateside address) continues in Republican dominated districts. We are the last bastions of this Democratic Republic and it is up to us to keep clamoring for justice.

The Impotent Democrats!

It's plain to see that all politicians, regardless of party, owe their lofty positions to large corporate backers. So, all the sniveling about the Democrats not having the votes to clean up Washington is meaningless. The only way, the criminal Bush Administration will ever be held to account, is when enough angry citizens hit the streets with pitchforks and torches, and tar and feathers! No government, regardless how corrupt, is immune from public pressure! When enough citizens finally get up off their asses and take matters into their own hands, only then will things finally change for the better! Trying to vote the crooks out is hopeless. All you get is more crooks! It's the way politics is set up in this country. The rich and powerfull will always control the rest of the people as long they are allowed to do so! It's up to the citizens of this country to protect the constitution! The politicians will not do so. Consider the fact that congress violates their oath of office every day by not taking action when criminal activity takes place in plain view! Wake up America! Take note at what is happening before it's too late! It MUST BE OBVIOUS TO EVERYONE THAT THE COUNTRY IS ON THE WRONG TRACK! Do something now! The alternrative will be to bend over and kiss your collective asses goodby!

Can anybody count? Votes, that is.

Every time I read another whiny screed like this, I mourn for the lack of civics education in American schools.

Did anybody pay attention to the "symbolic" no-confidence vote against Freddo yesterday? Once again, there were not enough Republicans willing to vote for cloture. I heard at least three "progressive" commentators breeze past this fact, and then demand to know why the Dems were bothering with the no-confidence vote instead of just impeaching the bastard!

Why? BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE VOTES, THAT'S WHY! Until enough Republicans find consciences and vote to break filibusters in the Senate and overturn King George's vetoes, the Dems can do nothing to force the Emperor's hand on anything. The only thing they can do is try to ratchet up pressure on their Republican counterparts until they're finally more afraid of the electorate than they are of the Bush Crime Family, and I'm afraid that will take some time, kids.

The time-honored circular firing squad so beloved of progressives is the real gutlessness here. Every time somebody blathers on about how the Dems lack courage and are no better than the GOP, Karl Rove smiles. He knows that the biggest lie the right wing conspiracy has ever promulgated, the most effective suppressor of votes, is the myth that all politicians are alike, they're all crooks, there's no point in voting for any of them. Next time you are tempted to write another piece like this, please pick up a civics book instead.

Circular Firing Squad, About Face!

"Don't have the votes"? DON'T VOTE! Use the filibuster and the (double) secret (strangle) hold instead for GOOD; to STOP the Bush wars by defunding them. No Gonzales/Rice/Cheney/Bush IMPEACHMENTS? Cease funding their Injustice, sad State and Manifest Insanity executive departments! Give 'em Hell, Harry! Puck 'em Pelosi! Cream 'em, DEM Congress! FOR US Troops (a circular firing squad works the Majesty of the Law when turned outward TOWARD our mortal threats)!

Your right

The Democrats are different from the Republicans.

The Republicans are overt fascists and racists demagogues.

The Democrats are Jim Crow racists who capitulate willingly to the right-wing demagogues in their never ending path of least resistance politics.

Other than that there is absolutley NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES.

voting in America is a total waste of time because the right-wing controls and has subverted the entire system. This will continue as long as the Democrats and Republicans, together, undemocratically control the system.

America is a majoritarian authoritarian hegemony. It is not a representative democracy. Voting in America gives a false impression that American democracy still exists when in fact American democracy is a lie and a fraud.

VOTING IN AMERICA IS PARTICIPATING IN AN ONGOING ELECTION FRAUD!

Voting in America leaves the false impression that elections in America matter and that the people have a voice. Its a lie!

Before his death right-wing stallwart Barry Goldwater lamented the lack of constitutional and democratic values in America. He described America, then, as being in a state of "proto-fascism". It may be the only time in my life that I will ever agree with a right wing American. America is quickly becoming the first fascist threat of the 21st century. Our elections simply mask this fact from the public and the world.

VOTING IN AMERICA IS PARTICIPATING IN AN ONGOING ELECTION FRAUD!

Dems aren't afraid

Democrats aren't afraid to vote for their convictions. They ARE voting for their convictions. They INTEND to fast track "free trade" and finish the decimation of America Labor.

My congresswoman, Susan Davis, voted for to continue funding in SPITE of enormous pressure from her constituents. If you look at her top campaign contributors, you'll see they include defense contractors General Dynamics, SAIC, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. She can vote on non-binding resolutions all day, but when crunch time comes, she will snuggle comfortably in the pockets of her corporate campaign contributors.

Hillary Clinton has predicted she will leave the troops in Iraq throughout her presidency. She is also quite pro-corporation/anti-labor.

Please don't make the mistake that the democrats lack the courage of their convictions. What you are seeing is exactly what they actually stand for. And I'm sorry to say it too. I hope this party can be returned to the standards of FDR, but I'm afraid this country's too far gone for that.

Democrats

Gave us the world record prison population of mostly poor minorities. A prison population that changed the outcomes of both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections in favor of the GOP. But the Democrats can't investigate one Republican for treason. The Democratic "majority" can't even put through a meaningless no confidence vote against the attorney general.

Democrats are nothing but the butt babes of the GOP.

Democrats have the majority. The Jim Crow right-wing has the control.

The Democrats should rightfully be called the Neville Chamberlaine Party.

America is a failed democracy

It is a right-wing authoritarian nation. Its democracy no more than a facade to 1. keep children docile until they become economic slaves to the system and 2. keep the rest of the world from stomping this proto-fascist nation into the dirt.

It simply does not matter which "party" holds any majority. Its the same Jim Crow thugs running things from the back rooms of the capitals of America.

There has not been a real and valid election in the United States of America in my 54-years. And I don't expect to see one in my lifetime.

Democracy cannot restore itself once subverted. It must be restored from the outside or with insurrection. George Washington saw this and tried to warn us.

"Let me now take a more comprehensive view, & warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party, generally."

Beyond Fail-Safe

When we got rid of Nixon there was a flicker of hope that we might actually become the promise our Founding Fathers intended, but then the Ray-gun Revolution brought us back to the 18th Century and we stumbled forward and backwards since till we got g.w. bush, the worst possible person to have in the worst possible place in the history of mankind.

I do believe because of bush&co. we have hastened the very clear and dangerous possibility the extermination of our species to a few short years.

Call me extremist, but could anyone prove this possibility wrong? I don't consider myself extremist, but from my vantage point extremist and seemingly insane people are in control of not only our country but other counties too. When in the past the alarmists would scream that "the end is near" humans didn't have the ability to actually destroy their species.

We do now.

And we can't even get rid of the people doing it. We can’t even get “no confidence” meaningless statements passed, let alone bring these criminal bastards to account for their crimes. We’re doomed. We don’t have the time left to stop the environmental and economic tsunami that’s about to crash on our shores. We’re already feeling the effects, and it’s just started. When (not “if”) bush&co. attack Iran the tsunami will crash at that time. The “if” comes in if we can stop them from continuing their march towards Armageddon by stopping them from committing any more aggressive attacks.

But, hating to sound like a prophet of doom, with history as my judge, I don’t have much hope of this happening. The most recent example of my exasperation was the Congressional cave-in to continue the funding of an illegal occupation, against the wishes of the vast majority of the people and one everyone knows is not just wrong, but carries all the heinous crimes one can commit in war.

Buy the time the people wake-up and get angry enough to do something about it, it will be too late. We’re most likely already past the “fail-safe” point. And even if we do somehow survive bush&co. and bring them to justice we have the wrath of the rest of the world to contend with. And I doubt seriously that there are that many Albania’s out there.

We got rid of Nixon

But we did not get rid of any of the Jim Crow policies that he put into place specifically to subvert the Voting Rights Act and the 26st Amendment. As a result we have a world record prison population that has served the right-wing well.

Florida 2000: U.S. presidential election decided by fewer than a thousand votes. At the same time Florida purges nearly 200 thousand citizens from the voting rolls.

America 2004: U.S. presidential election decided by about 3 million votes while more than 5 million Americans are electorally disenfranchised by the criminal justice system.

FACT: Jim Crow was and is the use of the criminal justice system to electorally disenfranchise unwanted voters.

FACT: Richard Nixon created the modern drug war after being advised that treating addiction as a disease would keep more people out of jail and reduce crime.

FACT: The book "Smoke and Mirrors" by former Wall Street Journal reporter Dan Baum relates that H.R. Haldeman wrote of Nixon, in his diary that; "President Nixon emphasized that you have to face the fact that the whole problem is really the blacks. The key is to devise a system that recognizes this while not appearing to."

That "system" was and is the drug war.

FACT: America achieved its world record prison population under Jim Crow DEMOCRAT William J. Clinton.

FACT: Hillary Clinton promises to return America to the halcyon days of her husband's record prison population.

FACT: The forced shift of urban minorities to rural prisons not only removes them from the voting rolls in their hometowns it also artifically pumps up the minority populations in the rural white prison towns. This reduces the constitutional apportionment count in the cities and hikes it in the rural white districts. This is the heart of Gerrymandering.

As long as Jim Crow Democrats continue to support the drug war their districts are removing poor people and minorities making it easier for those white Democrat politicians to campaign to white people ONLY. Black politicians have larger white populations that they must pander to by not confronting civil rights and social justice issues.

FACT: Nancy Pelosi ORDERED incoming committee chairs Dennis Kucinich, John Conyers and Alcee Hastings, all opponents of the drugs war, to do nothing at all about drug war and criminal justice policy until after the 2008 elections.

FACT: White Democrats benefit as much or more from Jim Crow today as they did in 1965.

Democratic Party (aka as the party of big business)

We have a Democratic Party willing to screw over America and America's workers so they will get more votes in 20 years.

A sad commentary on what used to be the party for the people. It's now the Party for big business but with a different name than Rethugs...just like Lieberman

We have alleged DLC Democrats claiming that we should welcome more illegal immigration, that will turn us into a third world country that will provide big business with unending slave labor while making Democratic politicians and businessmen rich.

a flicker ...

I said there was just a "flicker".

Indeed not mush changed other than a very small sense of hope. The corruption remained. All this is self-evident. I agree with everything you've exhibited and said, my concern is that I truly believe we have no time left to debate, have hearings with no result, or even plan to implement the commonsense solutions needed to save our sorry asses.

Plenty of time

After the long over-due insurrection that these fools are setting this country up for.

America today has a permanent outcast criminal population of more than 16 million. People who have no reason to love America. People who are fhighly armed. A population that is growing by hundreds of thousands EACH AND EVERY YEAR thanks to the law-and-order collusion and 'zero tolerance' policies of the single party authoritarian Democrats and Republicans.
