Why Won't the Corporate Press Discuss Bush's Character Problem?
A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL
Supposing you are playing a game of poker with a guy you know always cheats to win the hand. Whenever you bring it up, the other players all accuse you of being a bad sport and unfairly attacking the character of the hustler.
They tell you that he is a deacon of his church, a good family man, and is kind to grandmothers and babies. They tell you that he used to be a reprobate, but found Jesus and now is a God-fearing man, and that it is out of bounds to claim that he is winning unfairly or pulling a con.
In short, you become the target of accusations even though you are the one that is being victimized.
Well, my friends, that is exactly the state we find ourselves in today via Bush.
The corporate media, with message points from the RNC and Karl Rove, have made the characters of Bush and Cheney off limits, as if they were born with some sort of eternal dispensation that keeps their motives from being questioned.
This, of course, keeps them from being accountable for their endless broken promises, lies and abysmal performances.
When BuzzFlash began its online news and commentary service, nearly seven years ago, one of our motivations was drawing light on how hypocritical the Republicans and their mob of supporters were and are.
You had the Clintons who were vilified for 8 years, during the longest period of peace and prosperity in America’s recent history, on "character issues" that were either fabricated or had nothing to do with the performance of the presidency (no, sex doesn’t affect one’s ability to govern, unless the GOP uses it to waste two years of the nation’s time in a pointless effort at impeachment.) Then you have Bush and Cheney, who have presided over the worst period of war, debt and turmoil in America’s recent history, but the mainstream media considers it – with rare exceptions – verboten to question the character and motivation of two men who have earned an "F" for their performance.
Why the double standard?
Let’s take a look at a moment of rare veracity in politics that occurred the other day. Nancy Pelosi laid it on the line in regards to Bush’s years of failure in Iraq, responsible for more than 3,000 American GI deaths, hundreds of thousand Iraqi deaths, and hundreds of billions of dollars in our taxpayer money going to war profiteering.
Pelosi lucidly and forcefully declared: "The president knows that because the troops are in harm's way, that we won't cut off the resources. That's why he's moving so quickly to put them in harm's way," Pelosi said on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"Those particular comments were poisonous," [White House spokesperson] Perino responded. "I think questioning the president's motivations and suggesting that he, for some political reason, is rushing troops into harm's way, is not appropriate, it is not correct, and it is unfortunate because we do have troops in harm's way."
Forget for a minute that the White House statement was a model example of how to use a logical fallacy and make it sound indignant, what is important here is how the statement puts the character and motivation of Bush off the table.
Because, in 2007, we are still at the point where the corporate press generally adopts the primitive notion that Democrats have only bad character and partisan motivations – and Republicans like Bush and Cheney are only thinking about "the good of the country."
Say what?
Actually, this is integrally related to the GOP bond with the religious right. In essence, press coverage buys the implicit notion that Bush is "saved" and, therefore, a man of "faith and character," while Democratic leaders are "fallen" and subject to suspicion. It doesn’t come out of the mainstream media formulaic meat grinder in religious terms, but that’s the origin of the immunity that Bush and Cheney, to a lesser degree, enjoy.
In such a world of "saved" and "unsaved," performance doesn’t count, nor does psychological motivation or likely psychiatric impairment (as in the case of Bush’s very possible sociopathology.) All is forgiven a "saved" person who sins and fails, but no lapse is forgiven an "unsaved" person who excels.
As a result, Bush still speaks from a perch of media-bestowed credibility, when his psychiatric shortcomings, his likely criminal intent, his hunger for power, and his obvious psychological battle with his father, should have been generously explored in the press over the last few years.
Nothing illustrates this more than how quickly the mainstream press has forgotten how Bush summarily dismissed the findings of the "Iraq Study Committee," which was co-headed by two stalwarts of the D.C. status quo, including Bush the First’s consigliere, James Baker. Hey, James Baker was the guy that was the smooth front man for the theft of the 2000 presidency from Al Gore, and Bush still threw a bucket of scalding water in his face because he was doing Daddy’s bidding.
The American public and the world suffer dearly as a result of the refusal of the corporate press to explore Bush’s character beyond praising him with simplistic adjectives such as "decisive and bold."
Peggy Noonan, the speechwriter for Reagan who became his hagiographer, wrote a book of so-called non-fiction (which we consider fiction) on Ronald called "When Character Was King."
For Bush and Cheney, a book should be written entitled, "When Character Was Locked in the Closet and Never Discussed, Even Though It’s Killing Our Nation."

This is a sarcastic rhetorical question, right?
Surely by now a majority of Americans have realized that the Media is owned and controlled by the Republican party. Actually it ought to be called the Plutocratic party and instead of Media, rightfully called the Ministry of Lies and Propaganda. Media Moguls are millionaires and billionaires whose primary intent is profit, while maintaining the Establishment status quo. They are the Plutocratic Establishment and hoarding and increasing their wealth and power is their reason to be. Media Moguls are not in business to inform, preserve and protect the interests of the masses. They are in business to misinform, exploit and repress the masses.
Plutocrats see the masses as the enemy and a threat that must be controlled for their own well being. That is the sole intent of capitalism, and trickledown is carefully constructed myth to justify pissing downstream.
Truer words were never written
Thanks for this excellent, well-written, well-researched opinion. I could not agree more.
It has been a source of constant amazement and/or jaw-dropping shock to me, that Bush and Cheney have been given free pass after free pass by the media, even after it became obvious to a majority of Americans that this administration is one of the most crooked, deceptive, secretive and amoral administrations in our history, if not THE most. The free passes are made even more remarkable by the fact that Bill Clinton was practically crucified on a daily basis, during most of his presidency, for nothing, in comparison to Bush, Cheney and company
I believe you are correct; the born-again scam plays a part in what I have come to think of as a never-ending episode of the Twilight Zone. Some major news outlets have become frightened, I think, of the religiously insane in our country. They are a frightening lot.
Nevertheless, there is more going on here than constant pressure by the crusading crackpots and a corporate media, with vested interests in many of the Bush administration policies, both domestic and foreign; more than the Neocon vision, hideous though it is.
It seems to me that the U.S., as a nation, is having a kind of collective "nervous breakdown." We are witnessing an event which has been building for 40 years or more.
We have reached a point where reality, itself, is something to be debated constantly; not a shared understanding of ourselves and the world, based on well documented evidence. Our very society has become unreal. What we desperately need is authenticity and we can't get there directly from here.
What happens to the people of a nation, who can no longer trust in its institutions, be they governmental, social, financial, business, medical or what have you?
That is, in essence, what has happened to many of us, and is continuing to happen to many, many others, as they awaken to this nightmare of national un-reality and identity crisis.
The possibilities are: The nation and the society will collapse or the people will demand new, more relevant institutions over which they will exercise more direct influence and control.
We will find our "salvation" as a nation, not in our flawed leaders, but only in ourselves. The time of our childhood and narcissistic teenage stage, as a people, is over. It must be, if we are going to survive as a nation.
Our need for Mommy and Daddy political parties must end, now. It is past time for Americans to grow up and take responsibility for our own destiny, instead of constantly waiting for our leaders to lead and following blindly when they are leading us over a cliff.
We bill ourselves as a self-governing people and, yet, we treat politics in our Democracy as a spectator sport. That must change and change now. I believe that it is changing.
I hope that we have, finally, gazed into the abyss of authoritarianism and corporate imperialsim. and have decided that we don't want to go there.
It is certain that many of us have decided just that, in no uncertain terms.
Politicians of all stripes like to talk about the challenges we face. That is a polite, but huge understatement. What we face is no less than the work of total transformation; a job far too important to leave solely to our elected officials.
We Are The People.
Thank you for putting it so
Thank you for putting it so well.
bush's character problem
Not that he ever had any character to begin with, it's becoming obvious that his personality is in a rapid state of deterioration. It's probably because of his dim awareness that, although he was never really in charge and just came along for the ride, he might actually be held accountable for the manifold crimes of the cretins around him, because he occupies the position of President, whether he actually does the job or not. He is probably terrified of retribution, and I hope his worst fears are borne out, big time.
Why? Because MSM Is Bush's Accomplice In Treason
Which means that when Humpty-Dumpty takes his big tumble, down will fall MSM, pundits & all. And when is said long awaited comeuppance to take place? As soon as we get Congress to cut off all funding for the Iraq war, that's when.
Praise The Internet & The Scientists Who Brought It About
Because they've come up with the instrument that gives us a chance to change the world, provided that now's the right time for such, and assuming, of course, that it's still possible for a call to action, such as the above, if it reaches enough people, to work some sort of magic.
The Word is "Shill"
When you get into a poker game and it seems like you are the only one losing and the other folk at the table are assuring you that the obvious crook is in fact honest, that is because they have a back deal that they aren't telling you about.
Shills are a very old part of the con game, and it should be no surprise that they are hot to help out this multi trillion dollar con.
If the Gang Of Predators think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it BiPartisan to accommodate them by acting the part.
First Draft, State of the Union Address
(FIRST DRAFT)
State of the Union Address
Find enclosed early draft of code name (Flatulence) state of union address; this is not a final draft and should not be released under any circumstances.
Flatulence enters chamber, receives wild and thunderous applause except from the terrorist supporting Democrats. Shakes hands with what’s her name and the boss code name (Deadeye)
My fellow Americans (pause, smirk here) I can tell you tonight (with a straight face) the state of our nation is great. It is better than it has ever been democracy is on the march our soldiers almost one hundred and fifty thousand strong are imposing democracy at gunpoint on Iraqi terrorists who had been hiding in the general population of Iraq prior to our invasion. We have arrested six hundred of Sayyed Muqtada al-Sadr followers and will continue to arrest his followers until they are no longer the largest party in the Iraqi parliament because democracy is on the march.
At home we lead the world in the export economy, we export almost two billon dollars a month to the Peoples Republic of China. We are making our currency available to all nations we have doubled the number of dollars in circulation in six years. (Thunderous applause) Major currencies around the world can now purchase more dollars less expensively than at almost any time in history but we still have much to do. We lead the world in banking and finance we have undertaken more in the credit markets than the rest of the world combined. (Smirk here) But we still have much to do
But all is not perfect our long struggle with terrorism will continue, I say to the terrorists out there we will not wait for you to act against us. We will identify and prosecute any or all who in our opinion are terrorists. Will not let any of your sympathizers gain ground (democrats hey, hey) and we will not let the innocent go unprosocuted for what better camouflage could a terrorist use than to appear to be innocent. Because you’re either with us or (a democrat) against us but we will not rest we will prosecute you either way.
Above all in America we cherish or freedom the freedom to say what we think (hey, hey)
and to worship as we wish. One of our most sacred rights is the right to choose our own doctors millions of Americans would rather die then to give up this scared right. Every day millions of women and children practice that freedom by not going to doctors. They proudly say “I have no heath Insurance so I won’t go to the doctor” They love and trust our current system and they will die to protect that system. (Thunderous applause)
Americans have the greatest healthcare system in the world our healthcare corporations and insurance providers are some of the most profitable corporations in the world and will do all in their power to remain so while providing excellent healthcare to their customers. Almost every state supported university in America is doing tax-subsidized research to help keep these corporations profitable. All of our Military personel have healthcare benefits and much has been said about those without health insurance, it is no coincidence the rise of terrorism and the rise of the uninsured perhaps the loyal uninsured would join the military it would make it easier to identify the terrorists masquerading as uninsured Americans.
It is also of note that that while many in our country claim we have an unemployment crisis military recruitment centers have the help wanted sign out yet struggle to fill their quotas. Could it be that the unemployed are al Queda sympathizers? We will not forget September the 11th and it should be noted that the terrorists on that day were all unemployed and we will not forget September the 11th . The terrorists may try to hide as the uninsured or unemployed or even as homeless veterans but we will not be fooled like we were on September the 11th.
America must break it’s dependence on foreign oil supplies, we must develop new sources (Hey, Hey) Solar power and alternative energy supplies must be increased (smirk) (yawn) This government is doing all that is possible to guarantee these supplies.
But we must use caution with untried technologies and not let ourselves be taken in by terrorist disguised as new technologies solar power holds great promise but it must be remembered that the sun was shinning on September 11th. (Pause, smirk) If we were to rely on solar power we risk added skin cancers and we risk making the sun a terrorist target endangering every man woman and child on the planet. (Thunderous Applause)
We can take that chance, my fellow Americans I propose tonight the solar defense initiative a program costing over two hundred billion dollars but it will protect the sun from terrorists attack and we must do that we all remember what happened on September 11th. (Pause, Smirk, pause, Smirk)
Flatulence leaves room with thunderous applause, staff to assure him he hit home run.
Oh the Insanity!!!!!
Many here are equating this religious insanity to the Fairness Doctrine. The two are exclusive and I will explain why.
The religious tenant that "forgiveness" ends all "sin" and "talk" of sin works like a 12 Step Program without the part where you have to "ask" the person you hurt for THEIR forgiveness. You just go to a third anonymous party, pay your dues, do the song and dance, and you achieve forgiveness without considering the people you have harmed. After that the license you have purchased with your soul allows you to continue harming people for the rest of your life without being held responsible. Can you imagine what other people think of you? It is a LOUT License.
About the "Fairness" Doctrine. If it were reinstated our liberal radio that is in it's infancy would be killed. There are far more listeners than readers believe me. Just consider listening is passive and can be done while driving; and reading takes effort. Point made. Our liberal message goes much farther in radio than print.
If the "Fairness Doctrine" were reinstated, it would force the intrusion of "the other side" into our hard fought and expensive airwaves and coupled with the time commercials take up, would leave little else for the program. The Fairness Doctrine once before was used to destroy liberal talk radio and liberal TV because the conservatives have more money, more spare time, and are better organized. They flooded the airwaves with nasty accusations, and people turned it off. Conservatives moved right in and bought the stations with "no listeners" for cheap and have been sitting on those tools of the airwaves ever since, "parking" there to keep us out and block free speech. It has taken years of hard work and a mountain of money to try and get liberal talk radio going again. My favorite stations are NovaM, Air America Phoenix and Head On Radio Network. Other stations have a liberal talker here and there but are not 100% liberal. You have to pick through the programs to not listen to their resident conservatives.
Now HEAR THIS! If the Fairness Doctrine were re-imposed; It would be applied to the Internet and BUZZFLASH would cease to exist in it's present format. The people who support Buzzflash would be forced to pay for the "other side" to view their ideas on this site. Then you would have to "pick through" the stories to get the view you want. My goodness, Buzzflash would become "mainstream" and it would loose it's purpose. It would probably die off. Then some Conservative Rich Guy would come in and buy it and use it to spread more lies.
The Fairness Doctrine is a law that works as if your front door to your house must have the lock removed and if you wake up in the morning with a creepy guy on your couch, you HAVE to let him stay. Not only that, but you are forced to feed him!!! (And these Republicans don't like state sponsored charity!)
We prefer the Fairness Doctrine NOT be reinstated.
We prefer that people who want to follow the teachings of Christ not give their souls to a "church" but rather study the lessons of Christ and live up to them. Remember Christ TOLD US that the churches were corrupt with money changers. NOTHING Jesus taught has changed... not this lesson either.
The world would be a better place if these things were so.
You've answered your question in the headline
Operative word:"Corporate."
Today's media outlets are not run by hard-working, fighting-for-the-people journalists dedicated to ferreting out the truth, exposing lies, corruption, and political and industry cronyism. That image was never completely true, of course, the directive then as now was to sell copy, but much good for the general public came of it.
No, today's corporate media outlets are run by people, who may style themselves as "publisher" or "editor," but in reality are nothing more than grubby bean-counters. They identify more with George W. Bush, he is after all a member of "their" class; and even though some may have a little used "BA in journalism" tucked away in some forgotten corner of the attic, more often than not there is also the hemorrhiodal "Master's of Business Administration," degree prominently displayed on the office wall. Remember, Bush is our first president to hold an MBA degree from The Harvard School of Business, surely a school for psychos if there ever was one.
In effect, the CEOs of today's major news outlets are little different in mental disposition than our Commander in Chimp. They cannot see Bush's mental impairment because they do not see it in themselves.
Bush/Cheney's Free Ride
It'll take more than the Fairness Doctrine to fix this problem. The media ARE owned, what it will take is divestiture, that is, Media corporations should be broken off of the Industrial combines, made either, Stand-alone or part of limited-scope conglomerates. But to do that would require revoking corporate personhood, let's just say, we're working on THAT.
Unfortunately, the Newsrooms have been decimated, eviscerated, eliminated over the past two decades of consolidation. An effective, honest coverage of the world would call the actions of the parent companies and major advertisers into the spotlight, can't have that! So they crank up the distract-O-rama and sell! sell! sell!
Keep 'em on their couches or at the mall.
If the American people ever caught a close look at who this whole gang is, at how they act, at what their real values are, they'd turn over the whole applecart. When they finally find out how we've been looted in the crime wave that has washed over our government, some of these thugs gonna need protective custody.
Work every day to rid us of these hypocritical scumsuckers.
Hmmm. When did this really get traction?
OK, I know that media consolidation and corpatization has been going on for a long time, but it REALLY got its traction after the 1996 Telecommunications Act was passed and the giant companies that had been previously limited were allowed to swallow up and combine and get REALLY, REALLY BIG.
So, just remind me, which Republican was President when that bill was passed and signed?
Oh yea, Clinton.
KILL YOUR TELEVISION and get your news from BuzzFlash, OpEdNews, BradBlog, FreePress, and RawStory -- you'll be a lot healthier for it.

Excellent analysis...will forward to many!!
Thanks, and Thom Hartmann is talking about it right now, so I should try to get this in front of him.
It is unsigned?? I am not that familiar with Buzzflash editorial protocol, but that seems curious.

Only guest editorials have names attached.
At least, that's the way I've always seen it. Buzzflash uses the royal we and the third persona. ~:)
Great editorial, and timely, too. The media ought to be an echo chamber for the Dems who are saying that Cheney has NEVER gotten it right, not once, and who are nailing Bush, too. Instead, as from the beginning, they are the ones propping up the unstable, incompetent loser.
I'm also
curious
Character Assassanation
They're ALL conspiring to keep sufficient forces to Guard The OIL! The Bush-Cheney Book of the Dead should be titled, "When Character was Assassinated".
This is why we need the Fairness Doctrine reinstated
The Republican Party OWNS the media in this country. It doesn't matter what you watch, 90% of wha you see and read is right out of Pravda. Look at who is hosting the "Stenographer's Ball", er, Correspondent's Diner--none other than loyal Bushevik Yakov Smirnoff, er, Rich Little. He even admits he'sthere to kiss Bush's ass, just like every PRE$$TITUTE who attends.
You cannot offend President Peter Pan, oh no, he's God's annointed leader.
Between the corporate Busheviks and the sleazy TV Preachers who whip up the Jesusbots, this country is doomed unless we fially get out in the streets and say NO MORE! If everyone who despises President Pinhead just go on a general strike, we can force him out. the only question is this--do we have the will or have we been so brainwashed by the TV Preachers that we don't care?
Just His Character?
Why won't the MSM cover many topics?
You think it could be that 95% of all we see, read, and hear is owned by 6 major corporations, all of them being at best right of center if not out-right deeply committed to maintaining the status-quo with connections to the defence industry?
Do you think that's why we don't every see a real investigation of the 9/11 attacks? Or the illegal use of depleted uranium that has killed 4 times the troops as direct combat and render Iraq uninhabitable for the next 10 billion years? Or a in-depth investigation on pre-war intelligence? Or the illegal NSA/bush wire-tapping? Or ... I could go on and on ... oh, what's that? Is Brittney pregnant or not?
