Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Republicans Betray Our Military: It is a National Disgrace and a Peril to America

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

Yesterday, September 26, the mainstream media was too busy covering the tragically bizarre behavior of a president unhinged from reality to focus on the facts. Bush basically threw a tantrum, claiming that a National Intelligence Estimate by his 16 top intelligence agencies didn’t say what it said.

Then Bush said he would prove that he was right and that he would allow the declassification of selected parts of the NIE finding to prove his point of view was correct.

But even though the report (completed in April, but just disclosed in the New York Times on Sunday) was vetted by the Bush propagandists and only a White House version of an executive summary was released, the report still found that the war in Iraq has led to an increase in terrorists, been a rallying point for jihad, and was increasing the threat of terrorism to the U.S.

In short, the report found that Bush’s war in Iraq has spent billions of dollars and lost tens of thousands of U.S. and Iraqi lives to INCREASE the number of terrorists and the terrorist threat to our country.

This is incompetence, treason, malfeasance and dereliction of duty all rolled into one. It is beyond belief.

And even more shocking is that "Rep. Jane Harman, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Tuesday called on the White House to release a second, previously publicly unknown, national intelligence document that focuses solely on Iraq. Harman insisted there is a draft NIE that has not been revealed to the public. ‘I have learned there is an NIE on Iraq, specifically on Iraq, that has been left in draft form at the National Intelligence Council,’ the California congresswoman said at a news conference."

Yet, the mainstream press continues to treat Bush as credible – and continues to let Rove write a script about "the war on terrorism" that has nothing to do with reality. It as if the billions of dollars spent on "news coverage" by the corporate media is really spent on an ongoing update from the "Wizard of Oz."

What the mainstream media doesn’t report in any sort of front page coverage is that the military, except for the current Bush loyalists at the top, is in virtually open revolt against the Rumsfeld/Bush/Cheney/Rice leadership.

As Randi Rhodes has repeatedly noted on her Air America program, five former joint chiefs of staff – that’s five – have publicly opposed Bush’s attempt to legalize torture. That’s a lot of brass against a Bush "war" team, none of whom have ever had combat experience.

Moreover, top retired military personnel have been speaking out on how Rumsfeld, in particular, ignored, demeaned and threatened combat-experienced Pentagon brass who tried to prepare for the Iraq War and for a successful outcome. He threatened to fire anyone who came to him with a post-war plan for Iraq.

Combat tested and honored career officers have retired early because they could not stomach the contempt of Rumsfeld and the Bush Administration for the expertise of the armed forces – and for how Rumsfeld’s hubris in particular has resulted in the needless deaths of our soldiers.

These are the near-top and upper level career military men and women that John Murtha knows and is speaking on behalf of.

But many of them are speaking for themselves.

Since the White House and the Republicans in Congress won’t listen to any reasonable alternatives to the "divinely" driven "war" run by the White House, the Democrats finally got permission on Monday, September 25, to use a Senate hearing room to offer former military brass a chance to air their blistering criticisms of the Bush/Rumsfeld/Cheney conduct of the Iraq war.

These were military men – all of whom described themselves as Republican – and for their honesty, Trent Lott threatened "retribution" if the Democrats (and one courageous Republican Congressman) ever used the Senate again to allow former generals to discuss the Iraq War. That’s the contempt that Trent Lott, the White House, and the Republican Party hold for our military.

We were particularly moved by the testimony of Major General John Batiste. Batiste was the former commander of the Army's 1st Infantry Division in Iraq.

Batiste began his testimony with these words: "My name is John Batiste. I left the military on principle on November 1, 2005, after more than 31 years of service. I walked away from promotion and a promising future serving our country. I hung up my uniform because I came to the gut-wrenching realization that I could do more good for my soldiers and their families out of uniform. I am a West Point graduate, the son and son-in-law of veteran career soldiers, a two-time combat veteran with extensive service in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq, and a life-long Republican. Bottom line, our nation is in peril, our Department of Defense’s leadership is extraordinarily bad, and our Congress is only today, more than five years into this war, beginning to exercise its oversight responsibilities."

It is national disgrace, dishonor, and disservice to our military that this man had to leave the armed forces because of the arrogance and incompetence of the Bush Administration.

Our nation is indeed in peril when a bunch of cardboard cowboys receive major media coverage, despite blunder after blunder that harms our national security, while our military heroes – who have the knowledge to prevail – are forced from the armed services because they dare to offer up their expertise.

In Part II of this editorial, we will reprint the entire testimony of Major General Batiste, as spoken in a Senate Hearing Room on Monday, September 25.

Torture bill passes House; 34 Democrats vote YES!

Today, 34 House Democrats voted FOR torture and AGAINST habeas corpus by helping pass HR 6166, a bill so bad that even 7 Republicans voted against it.

On the Senate side, S 3930, the AP reports: "senators of the two parties agreed to limit debate on their own nearly identical measure, all but ensuring its passage on Thursday."

How bravely the opposition party is fighting for basic human rights. Surely the authoritarians will break and run away screaming. Any minute now....

The "retireds" and the

The "retireds" and the "formers" don't have enough clout. When are the "currents" going to speak out? The Slime Masters require face-to-face confrontation with their immediate peers, peers with backbone who do not fear career suicide, NOW, while the NIE and the torture bill irons are hot. John Murtha and Dennis Kucinich as lone individuals fall prey to ridicule and marginalization, but would not if they are joined by equally outraged, credible multitudes. Swiftboat tactics could not succeed if they are drowned out.
The other part of the problem is "the dawning of comprehension of the unimaginable" among the Middle Classes. It has spawned the Centrist class of fence sitters who fail to grasp the sheer magnitude of these issues because they bear personal responsibility for these same issues. They are perfectly comparable to the public relations-coined phrase "moderate Taliban", an oxymoron. And we see how the moderate Taliban are faring lately, don't we.
Between the centrists, the "retireds" and "formers" there is plenty of pre-election alarm, but its alarm that can't compete with the GOP hysteria machine.

Who is the enemy

Iraq did not attack us, we attacked Iraq. Radical Christians attacked Iraq. People like Ann Coulter said we should invade Muslim countries kill their leaders and convert the people to Christianity. That might make some Muslims concerned about our real agenda, don't you think? Radical Christians , like Pat Roberson said we should assasinate Hugo Chavez. Is Hugo Chavez a Muslim? Is North Korea a Muslim country? Bush has made enemies out of most the world by invading Iraq and Afghanistan, and occupying them. 75% of the people in Iraq want us out, why are we there?
What is the government's plan in Iraq? We will bomb , torture and kill them until they love us? Negroponte, James Steele and Caseel , the group that gave us the Salvadoran Option (Look it up) were sent to Iraq to train death squads there. No sooner did they set up shop there than sectarian violence began and people began showing up dead with electric drill holes in them. Our government wants Iraq split into small separarate states and is creating horrible violence there to insure it. We have become a terrorist state who attacks other countries at will. I don't think radical Muslims are our problem.
As for you Christians out there who want torture and maim other, I will leave you with a quote from Jesus. "As you do the the least of these , so you do unto me"

What we have here is the equivalent to trading our freedom's, our humanity, our country, our decency toward's our fellow man for a hand full of meaningless comfort's that don't amount to a pile of used comdoms! I keep telling you people...week after week...fuck asking these goddamn people for shit!!!! We need to demand change...They work for us..I pay these damn idiot's! You pay these damn idiot's! I'm tired of paying for some bunch of assholes to continually fuck up my country and run it in the ground like a rental car or something! All the talk in the world isn't going to accomplish shit! Wake up America!!! Above all else, buy more ammo...your gonna need it!

Amen!

You bet. We need to vote OUT all incumbents, not to vote for a single republican, and buy more guns. We are in mortal danger from Bush and his pals who have NO VESTED INTEREST in our country. This includes most everyone in Congress. Most do not care if we are a nation of aliens, drugs, poorly paid jobs... They spend our taxes on other countries, on a broken educational system, on aliens in our hospitals. Amen to you!!!

Can Someone Please Eliminate Bush & Cheney

Isn't there someone out there who has reached the point of frustfration where they could fufill the strong national desire to see both Bush and Cheney eliminated from our USA democracy. Surely there are other powerful forces in our country competing for power, maybe they could do whatever they see fit, no one will care what happens to them. There must be plenty of ways to accomplish this goal. We could simply start a petition to banish them from the land. We could change the locks at the White House and don't give them a key. By the way, is it possible to make a citizen's arrest and send them to Guatanamo.

DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE: TROOPS SENT TO BATTLE WITHOUT PLAN

Rumsfeld et al knew that a comprehensive post invasion plan would contradict what they were selling to the public. To avoid such "smoking gun" evidence that a internecine maelstrom was likely to erupt, Rummy forbade a Phase 4 plan.
Less American sons and daughters would now be dead and maimed if the State Department and the Military had been allowed to fully plan the Iraq invasion.
That some of the blood of our dead youth is directly attributable to depraved indifference by George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld is a sad and fearsome fact.
New leadership, with an open agenda to protect America and our troops, is now critical.

Good God . . . ??

"Some User On The Web" is the perfect example of a BUSH supporter who is mighty scared.
I'll even bet he thinks they "hate us because of our freedom". Instead of because we support the Saudi regime . . . which is just another filty rich terrorist camp. Perhaps if we didn't "need" their oil at all, and our "interests" were in creating new energy sources which didn't require the USA having military bases on their Holy Land . . . maybe they wouldn't hate us so much and "Some User On The Web" could sleep at night.
This guy is UBERscared . . . just the way Rove likes 'em. They're quite pliable that way.
I suggest he re-reads "1984", "Mien Kampf" "Brave New World" and get a taste of what this
corporation/administration has in mind. Nothing to fear but fear itself, buddy.

There are plenty of great ideas out there. John Murtha has a great take on the situation. Wesley Clark, too. If you want to see some alternative plans to invading a country that had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks on us google those two, for starters, and see what they propose.
They are not traitors . . . as the current bunch of criminals have tried to make you believe.

Chill, fella . . . you have more chance of having a piano falling on you from a thirty story building than being the victim of an Islamic Fanatic's evil plans for you.

Bingo!

"Chill, fella . . . you have more chance of having a piano falling on you from a thirty story building than being the victim of an Islamic Fanatic's evil plans for you."

Hahaha! Exactly. The thugs need to put away their Depends and put on their big boy Pull-ups. Practice not p!ssing their pants over Islamic fanatics who will NEVER bother their backwoods hovel. New Yorkers don't mince around, cowering and begging the First Lady George Bush to come protect them, and they are far more likely to be struck again than these all-hat-cowboys.

Hey...yet another all-American boy shot up a school in Colorado. Maybe we should worry more about home-grown terrorists and leave the international terrorists to the agencies designed to deal with them. They'd do a far shot better of a job if our girlieman George Bush stuck to reading My Pet Goat.

Bush IS TREASONOUS

Batiste said it best. Also and to add to the disgust we all do and should feel toward Bush and his administration: Bush accepts the word and pictures of the enemy instead of the word of our soldiers and is keeping our men in prison and in worse conditions than the damm Gitmo terrorists are held!
And PLUS- Bush is conspiring with Mexico and Canada to eliminate our independent national status to be replaced by a North American government and currency.

Who else is acting every day against the will of the citizens and to eliminate our USA national security and independence? With very, very few exceptions- the entire Congress. This includes the darlings- Kennedy, Clinton, Kerry. Skip the liberal-demo-rep fight... concentrate of the existence of our country. WE ARE IN MORTAL DANGER!

Bush has an MBA from the Harvard Business School

Is it coincidence that George W. Bush is the first American president in the nation's history who is neither a veteran (Andrews Jackson, Dwight Eisenhower), farmer (George Washington), educator (Woodrow Wilson) or lawyer(just about all the rest)? And is it any coincidence that the current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, USMC General Peter Pace and his immediate predecessor USAF General Richard Myers both are "masters of business administration?"

For many years now I've heard folks ask,"Why can't the government be run more like a business?" Well, now that question has been answered. Our government and country are being run like a business that the board of directors are intent on driving into bankruptcy court.

The business model is anything but democratic. The Bush administration sees itself as a corporation, cabinet the board of directors, the Republican-controlled US House and Senate compliant shareholders and the rest of us are the easily duped, mislead and gullible comsumers of their slipshod produce.

This does not let the Democrats off the hook either. Here's what former Virginia governor and '08 preidential hopeful mark Warner said at a luncheon appearance in Des Moines, IA last week:"Even though the Bush tax cuts only applied to the top 2 percent of Americans, what I think the Kerry campaign missed was that the other 98 percent of Americans still aspired to get to the point in their life where they could qualify for the tax cuts."The Des Moines Register.com Adherents of Warner, and Democrats like him, spout the same failed rhetoric of supply side economics that lead this nation into the Reagan recession, which, of course, was blamed on Jimmy Carter, and the myth that everyone can become a millionaire with enough hard work. Gov. Warner's hard work is best summed up in his Wikipedia entry:In the early 1980s, Warner served as a Senate staff member to Senator Christopher Dodd. He used his knowledge of federal telecommunications policies as a broker of cellular phone franchise licenses, making a large fortune(emphasis added my me). But I've digressed.

This corporationist tend will mean the end of democracy as we know it and less national security. And in keeping with the corporate mentality, the actions or inactions by the Bush administration in confronting Al Qaeda, the real plan to fight and win the "war on terror" is to sell the gullible comsumer, the American people, the sizzle and not the steak; more fancy, and unnecessary and prohibitively expensive military doodads than treating terrorism as a police problem. CEO Bush and his board of directors could really care less about the safety of the American public from attack just as long as the scared comsumer keeps the shareholds, ie. the US Senate and House Republicans, in office and happy. That which does not fit in with the business model the White House board of directors sees to it that it will not reach the public;what the consumer does not know will not hurt him until the ladder breaks from under him, then just let him try to sue. Moreover, that which the CEO does not want to hear will not reach his ears.

This is the greatest threat to democracy this republic has faced in its 217 year history. We must bring our own house
to order by returning to "...government of the people, by the people, for the people..." over that of corporate interests.

Solutions

The first thing we need to do is pray that enough people show up at the polls to vote that not even the rigged E-voting can scew the results. IF, and that's still a big "if", the House gets in the Dems hands, John Conyers, one of the few decent politicians in Washington would decome the head of the Judiciary, than we'll see some serious investigations into this corrupt administration. (Which scares me to death, becuse bush&co know this and being what they are are capable of anything to stop this - look for an attack near you or Iran here we come?)

If the Dems get in in 06, 08, we should get on our knees and beg forgivness from the world for the crimes this nation has committed under bush and offer him and his minions up to the World Court for the crimes against humanity they've committed.

As far as solutions to most everything - all we have to do is exact opposite of everything bush has done and that should pretty much take care of that.

Electronic rigging

You must not be read up on the myriad of ways the electronic machines can add, subtract, switch and syphon off votes to think that the MARGIN of Democratic voters over Republican voters is going to make a difference.

It has nothing to do with how many more voters try to vote Dem.

I'm not sure about this "resigning in protest" business

While I respect the opinions and the beliefs of men like Batiste, I sure hope he's right that he can do more out of uniform to save the situation.

I've always suspected that departures of principled men like Batiste just make it easier for people like Rummy to replace him with someone who drinks the Kool-Aid - and that doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Solutions begin with awareness

I disagree with the first comment. Finding a solution for
the Iraq fiasco must begin with awareness of the gravity of
the situation. Hence the appropriateness of this editorial.

Americans are now coping with the "slow dawning"
that the man they elected to office at least once via re-election
is not competent to run the country. A solution will not come overnight.

It took billions of dollars and dozens of blunders by the white
house to get us here. Remember - they were planning this war for a
very long time before 9-11. The evidence for that is overwhelming.

We begin by voting these fools out and making the very best choices
we can to get new people into the white house who can begin to do actually do the will of the American people and address the extrication
process. That is to say, begin the process of extricating our troops
out of a miserable no win scenario.

Ranting about the editorial is no solution either. Raise awareness first. Tell friends and family who never vote that they must now vote
with all their heart or face suicide bombers on us soil in less than 4 years. A sea change in Washington must take place in 2008.

The very future of the nation is at stake. I genuinely hope that
independent political parties are scouring their men and women for
alternative candidates to the democratic or republican puppets.
We now need a legitimate new political party. That would be the next
step after raising awareness at a grass roots level.

Beginning a solution:
1) Riase awareness in your local circles of family and friends
2) Look to alternative candidates as options
3) If you find none, shut up and start a new political party.

I propose the New American Unity Party as the name for this
unifying third party option.

There - that should keep the first commenter busy for awhile.

Goldenheart

Solutions have been offered, read my post two down from this one

:)

Brava, Deb!

You obviously have a good nose for Rove plants. Loved your post below, and this one, too. "New Unity Party" my foot.

Nice try, Golden, but guess what? This MO's wearing a little thin. We have a party to vote for, influence, use, and follow, as debbieri points out. All these "reasonable" posts that advocate coming "together" or ---hey! let's start from scratch---equal yet another thug tactic to diminish Dem voters.

Also, you might go back over your talking points and note that Bushie himself spouted on and on and "Unity Government" in his "Iran--Iraq war is a comma" ramblings. So, is this the new code word? A Unity Party and a Unity Government for the New World Order?

Run along, now, Goldie, and give more money to Nader and Lieberman. It's obviously your niche in the Rove Machine.

Thanks, Buzzflash, for the forum so we can all expose the MO's and code words to watch out for, and I appreciate also the coming interview. Give the "voluntary army" of retired generals as much of a platform as they need. And keep spanking the media for propping up the lunatic in the White House!

Good God, you people are

Good God, you people are truely amazing. You distort the truth, you attack people personally, you draw conclusions without merit, and you want to be the ones running things? Holy crap! This is likely the last time I will ever set foot in this putrid cesspool again, that's for sure.

In other words...

Both your methods and your nyms have been compromised, so it's back to the rw thinktank?

Sorry your "ideas" didn't float here, in this "cesspool" as you so personally put it.

Over and over, you

Over and over, you illustrate my point. And I assume by "rw thinktank" you are referring to the "real world", so yes, that's where I'm headed....

"Real World" in rightwing terms???

Ha! Who's into "faith-based" and who's into REALITY based?

Nuff said.

Nice rant, but you offer no solution

You, like so many others, have anted up and shown what your perception of the "problem" is. That's fine. So now, show us your cards. Show the world what is your comprehensive, detailed plan to reduce our military presence, reduce the number of lives lost, reduce the hatred against the U.S.A., reduce our dependence on foreign countries for energy and other goods, reduce the number of illegal immigrants, reduce the acts of terrorism, stabilize our economy, and improve the overall morality of our country.

Not one single person who opposes the current administration has yet to do this effectively. Simply advocating a change of administration is no plan. It may be a start, but no one as of yet has provided any detailed plan to viably accomplish these goals.

Or will providing such a plan tip you hand in your upcoming elections? If the stability of this country is so important to you, instead of bickering and complaining along party lines, why not present a doable, executable, viable plan that ANY administration should be able to follow?

Nice Talking Points, Here are some solutions

You ask a question that cannot be answered completely on a message board, but I'll give you some ideas. The most important and prescient thing we can do to improve our standing in the world today would be to impeach Bush/Cheney and expel them from office. After that here are some suggestions.

For starters. We can follow Col. Murtha's and Sen. Biden's recommendations for redeployment from Iraq. The future of Iraq can only be decided by the Iraqis, that is clear at this point. We could use the fact that we were going to redeploy our military to leverage the Shiites into partitioning the country into a Sunni province and a Shiite province, with shared oil revenues. The Shiites will most likely not like to hear this, but that is the choice they are going to have to make. They can have a chance at peace, or they can have a larger civil war and the probable collapse of their government.

Secondly, we redeploy some (not all) of our troops back to Afghanistan and help the fragile government of Karzai. At this point we are losing that war too. The Taliban is stronger now than they have been since before the invasion in 2001. Warlords control huge parts of the country, and poppy production is higher than it has ever been.

Thirdly, we can stop blindly supporting Israel's largely illegal and theocratic actions. The U.S. existed for 150 plus years before Israel came into existence and we did just fine. They are not the 51st state, and a lot of what they stand for goes against America's founding principles, i.e. the rejection of state religions and specific racial standards.

Fourth, we can nationalize the oil companies. Individuals have no more right to own the natural resources of the planet than they do to own the sun. They are raping the world and everyone in it and everybody knows it. We can use all that money that would come from that to invest in technologies that already exist, and make them affordable and widely available. Hybrid cars that get over 100 mpg are doable today. Solar panels and construction methods that can supply all the power to homes and office buildings already exist.

Fifth, nationalize the tobacco companies. They do nothing but sell poison that kills this country's citizens. There is nothing in the American constitution that guarantees the right for a corporation to make money off of murder. If people want to smoke that tobacco money should go for the well being of the country, not to pad the pockets of murderous drug dealers.

Finally, illegal immigration, as well as the rapidly shrinking middle class of America, is a direct result of Reaganomics. Reagan declared war on unions and the government regulation of business, and as a result corporations were free to fire Americans and hire the cheapest labor they could get-Illegal Aliens. Jobs like construction and sanitation that used to always be held by unionized Americans now can be held by illegal immigrants. The economy and the farmlands of Mexico have been held hostage by the unregulated mega corporations through acts like NAFTA and The WTO. As a result, Mexicans have been forced to come to America to work for little more than slave wages, just to have enough money for food and housing.

There is obviously much more to do, and there are many people who know more than I do. You need to stop spouting off with ridiculously false blanket statements like "Not one single person who opposes the current administration has yet to do this effectively." That statement is an empty accusation and is completely historically inaccurate. It was the Republican Conservative agenda, under Nixon and especially Reagan, that created the problems you speak of. They can be remedied by using the classic American ideas of Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and FDR.

Fed up to High Heaven with Lying Right Wing Talking Points

First, this was an excellent commentary. It was not a rant. Beautiful Buzzflash. Thank You.

YOU WANT A PLAN: HERE'S A PLAN:

If you are interested in a complete, detailed military plan offering the solutions to reduce our military presence, reduce the numbers of lives lost, reduce the hatred against the U.SA. go here:

http://democrats.senate.gov/dpc/dpc-hearing.cfm?A=38

It is the complete video, transcripts, and text from:

An Oversight Hearing on the Planning and Conduct of the War in Iraq conducted by:

Senate Democratic Policy Committee Hearing

Three Military Generals (recently retired, but directly involved with the Iraq war, they CHOOSE to retire to have the freedom to speak out against this war and administration and sacrificed their careers and financial prospects to bring truth to this nation).

The DEMOCRATS held this hearing and invited ALL Republicans from the House and Senate to attend. NOT ONE SINGLE REPUBLICAN Senator attended, and only 1 Republican Congressman (who is in a battle for his political life) went.

This is the ONLY oversight hearing on Iraq ever held. The DEMS held it. The Republicans didn't have the decency to go and listen to our military generals PLEADING for help and competent management and policy decisions. And, the only reason the dems haven't held a hearing before this one is that the generals VOLUNTEERED. THEY AREN'T ALLOWED TO SUPEONA TESTIMONY. The Republican CAN do that as the majority, but they won't. They are too busy covering their own sorry political asses to take the time to perform their oversight responsibilities. It is treasonous.

The generals offered all that you asked for in your post regarding solutions for Iraq. The dems sought it out. The dems are trying to get change. But, they can't even get a hearing from our top military begging this nation (they DIRECTLY ask for the American people's help) to air on t.v....

So...in regards to YOUR post. Nice little rant. A load of pure crap. Straight from the Rove Talking Point Book.

Only problem is you won't get away with such garbage here. You see, while you may have the MSM bought and paid for by corporate ads and donations, we have the truth. And, we wield it fiercely and proudly. You are out of your element on these boards.

So go back into whatever little neo-conservative hole you crawled out from....

I'm sorry for invading your

I'm sorry for invading your high and mighty little fiefdom here on this forum, but you really do miss the point. We are up against radical Muslim extremists who will not hesitate to kill me simply because I am not a Muslim. We are not dealing with people who will negotiate--we are dealing with people who believe that you and I must die in order for them to earn their eternal rewards. I'm sorry if that offends you, but I will continue to support those who will do what it takes to eliminate that threat.

That much is true.

All fundamentalist extremists must be dealt with, whether they be Muslim, Christian, Hassidic, Mormon, Scientologist or Moonie.

Best way to do that? RIDICULE. EXPOSURE. Not bombing, torture, invasion or other toxic ways.

"Solutions" have been offered; Republicans refuse to listen!

As Bush was plotting his unprovoked attack on Iraq, Colin Powell cautioned him, "If you break it, you’ll have to fix it." Well guess what; like a brat throwing a tantrum Bush "broke it" - big time! He destroyed an entire society, decimated its infrastructure, killed over 40,000 of its citizens and, to no one’s surprise, is utterly befuddled as to how to "fix it".

A consistent theme among Republican apologists for Bush’s war in Iraq is that Democrats criticize, but offer no solutions. Actually Democrats have offered several alternatives to Bush’s shoot-‘em-up tactic, but Republicans dismiss these plans. Apparently they're not sufficiently ferocious.

Let me suggest that the details of any approach to a solution flow from its philosophical foundation and it’s that foundation that’s at the heart of the political dispute.

Despite his claim that Christ is his favorite philosopher (yes, he really said that in 2000) Bush’s policy of starting wars and torturing captured prisoners is antithetical to the teachings of Jesus, whose "philosophy" involves loving others as yourself. He is more properly described as a disciple of Machiavelli, whose two major works, "The Prince" and "The Art of War" are concerned with an all-powerful leader’s acquisition and maintenance of political power by whatever means he may deem necessary (a unitary executive).

As one liberal American citizen my view on relationships among people and nations is reflected in John Donne’s "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - "No man is an island, entire of itself" and "any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind."

Starting from a recognition of our common humanity we can hammer-out the details of building a livable world. The current Machiavellian path is a treadmill to oblivion.

"Mind like parachute. Only function when open." - Charlie Chan
