The Path to Infamy for Disney and ABC: Here are the Facts

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

These are the facts:

It’s the standard Rovian/Swift Boat practice to crank up the right wing echo chamber with falsehoods about a project or accusation, deny access to opposing viewpoints, and then claim that the objectors don’t know what they are talking about because they haven’t seen what they are objecting to.

This is exactly what was done with "The Path to 9/11," when, it appears, the ABC Network granted unusual liberties to the contracted right wing director and producer/writer of the film to conduct a right wing media campaign to praise the partisan political ad known as "The Path to 9/11." Indeed, as Max Blumenthal recounts in such detail, the center of virtually the entire "Path to 9/11" project can be found in David Horowitz and his radical right wing molotov cocktail "organizations." Horowitz is the male Ann Coulter, a former Trotskyite turned Stalinist.

Govindini Murty worked with Horowitz to use his extremist and incendiary "FrontPageMag" as the launch for "The Path to 9/11." In addition to Murty’s "call to arms" review of the film, the magazine did a front page interview with the producer/writer of "The Path to 9/11," Cyrus Nowrasteh. Nowrasteh, as Blumenthal documents, has an ideological relationship to both Horowitz and Murty through a group that is trying to "recast" Hollywood rightward,  a right wing film conclave called the Liberty Film Festival.

While Murty was successfully cranking up the right wing media echo chamber, ABC was denying the people it was falsely portraying in "The Path to 9/11" – Bill Clinton and his senior staff – the right to even see the film, even as the right wing media shills were receiving DVDs. If this isn’t a Swift Boat operation, we don’t know what is.

Furthermore, as BuzzFlash has pointed out, the interview in "Front Page Mag" with Cyrus Nowrasteh reveals him to be a parrot of Karl Rove talking points. It is just about the same responses you would get from interviewing Ken Mehlman. Any claim that ABC has made that the production was done with attention to accuracy or fairness is totally debunked by this interview, readily available to the public.

That brings us to the director of the film, one David Cunningham. As both Blumenthal and TPMMuckraker reveal, Cunningham is part of a cultlike movement to Christianize Hollywood. We will quote Blumenthal here: "Cunningham is no ordinary Hollywood journeyman. He is in fact the son of Loren Cunningham, founder of the right-wing evangelical group Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The young Cunningham helped found an auxiliary of his father's group called The Film Institute (TFI), which, according to its mission statement, is "dedicated to a Godly transformation and revolution TO and THROUGH the Film and Television industry." As part of TFI's long-term strategy, Cunningham helped place interns from Youth With A Mission's "global training network" in film industry jobs "so that they can begin to impact and transform Hollywood from the inside out," according to a YWAM report."

So the director of the film, the writer/producer, and the chief publicist all are part of a Hollywood Horowitz right wing hit squad, comparable to an entertainment industry version of the Swift Boaters. They are not people who just happened to end up working together. They are working together because they have an agenda – and that agenda is highly partisan and extremist.

Meanwhile, ABC rolled out the carpet for the right wingers promoting the film, hosting a private screening for them – while, remember, denying access to the former President of the United States. ABC News even went so far as to show its true partisan colors with a headline that reads, "Clintonistas Claim Foul Over ABC 9/11 Film."

ABC is continuing to deceive the true nature of its collaboration with the White House and the right wing on "The Path to 9/11." It is claiming that it knowingly produced a fictionalized version of the events leading up to 9/11, but it is advertising the program abroad as "exactly what happened."

The $40 million question is where did the 40 million dollars come from? Are Disney shareholders paying for this travesty, since it has no commercial backing? (Which also raises the question that if it they won’t lose any money by canceling it, the least that they can do to "prove" that they are not doing a partisan hatchet job for the GOP is to delay running it until after the election.)

The Pensito Review takes a shot at figuring out the origin of the financing. By connecting the dots, it is possible that Richard Mellon Scaife or other funders of the ultra fanatical Horowitz are really the money behind "The Path to 9/11." Scaife surreptitiously funded the "Arkansas Project" that was the prelude to the Ken Starr inquisition – and he has long funded sleazy GOP slime attacks.

We are sure ABC will indignantly say that they spent the $40 million dollars as a "public service," but that’s a little hard to believe when they are providing a timely partisan attack, aimed at influencing an election, as a public disservice.

It used to be that you went to www.abcnews.go.com/US/, then clicked on the Good Morning America link about 9/11 anniversary coverage, then got the story "Clintonistas Claim [Cry?] Foul Over ABC 9/11 Film." The path to this story, its title, and the link which points to it have all changed. Now you go to www.abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/, then to the link titled "Bill Clinton Upset over ABC Entertainment 9/11 Movie." The article's title is now "Clintonistas Decry ABC Entertainment 9/11 Film." As far as I can tell, the content of the article has changed not at all.

Disney/ABC

All are ignoring the elephant in the room. A majority of Americans want this, will love it and not care one iota about the political aspects. Not until these apathetic dumbded-down American idol watchers are personally suffering on a daily basis from Bush's catastrophic and Fascist policies will things change. By then it will take a revolution in the streets to overthrow the entrenched corporatists. Things will get much, much worse until then. The ReThuglicans will gain 2 Senate seats and 4-6 House seats in the '06 elections, thereby assuring a veto-proof majority. This will be orchestrated through control of the media and the electronic voting machines, with an October surprise thrown in and the drum beat of fear sounding the call right up to election day. Then in '08 McCain (substitue your ReThug of choice here) will pick Jeb Bush as his running mate and win the Presidential election for the same reasons. McCain will "mysteriously" die in the first year, and Bush will become President. He will then be elected to two subsequent Presidential terms, again, for the same reasons (President for 11 years). By then enough Americans MAY be willing to take to the streets. Even then, as long as they can watch TV, drive their cars and go shopping this is also in doubt.

Disney is no longer value-oriented

I can remember when the name Disney meant something. I grew up in the 50's, and the Mickey Mouse Club and Walt Disney were names to be proud of. Since then, we have passed the Disney name down to our children and our children's children, always believing in the wholesome entertainment we witnessed as children ourselves. Recently though, the name Disney has become an abberation to what it once represented. The corporate and media giant it has become has made it arrogant, selfish, partisan, and untrustworthy. What we all need to do is make sure the name Disney is banished from the lives of our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren. They may not feel the heat immediately, but years down the road Disney will be paid back many times over for their breach of the public trust. I suggest everyone who has ANY Disney DVD or VHS pack it up and send it back to them, damaged of course so that they can't reissue it, along with a note to let them know that the name Disney is no longer relevant, wanted, or needed in our daily lives, and as of the broadcast of this partisan hatchet job, banished from our lives forever. My only hope is that the next major hurricane that hits Florida devistates Disney World beyond repair.

Disney's Attempt To Turn 9/11 Into America's Reichstag Fire

That 1933 catastrophe in Nazi Germany in which the Nazis (blaming Jews for it) set fire to the German Parliament building in order to terrorize the German people and stampede parliament members into granting Hitler supreme power. It worked too. And now today, five years post 9/11, we find the Disney Corporation trying to pin the blame for that catastrophe (which occurred during President Bush's watch) on former President Bill Clinton. Why is Disney doing this? Three reasons - To divert our attention from this disasterous Iraq war; to frighten us into voting Republican in November, rather than switching to the Democrats, the party of Bill Clinton, the very person Disney is blaming for 9/11; and to obscure the fact that it was President George Bush who (whether intentionally or not) fell asleep at the wheel and allowed 9/11 to happen. But will Disney get away with turning 9/11 into America's Reichstag fire, replete mit scapegoat (Bill Clinton instead of Jews) and mit savior (President Bush in lieu of Der Fuehrer)? Depends upon what we the people do to expose this Disney hoax. We do that and, it'll be "Gotcha, Disney and your fascist cohorts!." . .

Another Swiftboat Attack

I agree that this is just another Swift Boat attack. But I also read in the Chicago Tribune that it is not only a badly flawed movie facutally but that it is a very bad movie, period. Boring and way too long. Let's face it folks, a good many of our fellow citizens don't know who their own Congressperson is. Much of this movie will go right over their heads just before they change the channel to the football game. They will not be upset about something Sandy Berger supposedly said or did. They will be more apt to think he's an executive at Berger King? Undoubtedly a lot of the "useful idiots" in the Bush base will be given their orders to watch and believe during church services this morning. But those folks all ready blame Clinton for everything and go to church to worship at the alter of George W. Bush. As for it being distributed as the truth over seas, what a joke. Those people all ready know the truth because they have a somewhat honest press. If the movie slanders members of the Clinton administration as well as Bill Clinton then they should, and must, sue the frigging pants off Disney. For my part, I have seven grandchildren and Disney Movies quite frequently figured prominently amongst Christmas gifts. That will no longer happen. I didn't watch ABC very much, a lineup of stupidity and trash for the most part, but will not watch it at all anymore.

No Surprise

In comparison to staging another terrorism event, the tools of "civilized" partisanship, are getting rusty from the opposing reality of current events. I suspect a war is going on in the leadership of our country, behind all of this. If this is the "October Surprise", we will be very lucky indeed. Americans must review themselves, we are all on trial here in the court of reality. WISE Leadership is the test to be used. Have we gotten what we asked for? I think we have, but that doesn't mean we can't grow up. Another 2 years of adolescent leadership, I say NOT!

Is this a military recruitment propaganda piece?

I haven't heard military recruiters mentioned in this discussion. Isn't it likely that the reason this is being sent to schools/teachers is so they will include it in their curriculum... with what aim? Certainly not having students study the "Scholars for 9/11 truth" material, or anything else from the 9/11 truth movement. The military is stretched beyond thin. A lot of young people enlisted right after 9/11 and they are dead or out now. What if we looked at this whole propaganda piece as a military recruitment tool? Contact your local high school Principals and Superintendent and School Board and ask that if they use this clearly false material in school they ALSO need to provide access to the DVDs from the Scholars for 9/11 truth. Note - they are CHEAP from JusticeVision.org. Only $9 or $12 for 21 hours of material, and they can be copied. Get them, copy them and give them to the schools in your area - or directly to the teachers, and ask that they be made available to students so that they can research for themselves alternate viewpoints and have a real debate about the issues. Meanwhile, make a list of ALL advertisers on ABC/DISNEY and target them ALL. They are attempting to shield themselves from backlash by not having any ads run during the propaganda event. Don't let that tactic work. The money for this propaganda came from ALL of them, so all should be targeted.

Hit ALL ABC advertisers

Unless we find that this was funded by someone outside like Richard Mellon Scaife, we can assume it was funded by the money received by ALL companies who pay for advertising on DISNEY/ABC. They are attempting to SHIELD themselves from backlash by having no ads running during the propaganda event. Don't let that tactic work. Make a list of all companies advertising anything on ABC, and we should boycott ALL of them. Don't buy the products, and take action to remove them from your retirement or investment portfolios. This is a CORPORATOCRACY, and they will lie as long as it is profitable. They will create wars as long as it is profitable. They will even create false flag attacks on the American people as long as it is profitable. Withdraw $$upport.

I believe that Disney have been working with YWAM (and possibly the Republicans, either directly or indirectly) for at least 2 years on this project.

Doing things in a civilized way and within the law is the preferred way to accomplish all things that need doing. Keep in mind, however, that the bush gang is peopled by brutal thugs, degenerates, and pathological liars. They can't be reasoned with, persuaded, or dealt with as one would with decent and morally upright citizens. You might as well try to pet a rabid dog; you'll get the same result. CREATE RUMOR. Rumor mongers must avoid discussing issues by describing all charges, regardless of venue or evidence, as mere rumors and wild accusations. Other derogatory terms mutually exclusive of truth may work as well. This method which works especially well with a silent press, because the only way the public can learn of the facts are through such "arguable rumors". If you can associate the material with the Internet, use this fact to certify it a "wild rumor" which can have no basis in fact. "You can't prove his material was legitimately from French Intelligence. Pierre Salinger had a chance to show his 'proof' that Flight 800 was brought down by friendly fire, and he didn't. All he really had was the same old baseless rumor that's been floating around the Internet for months." Proper response: You are avoiding the issue with disinformation tactics. The Internet charge reported widely is based on a single FBI interview statement to media and a supportive statement by a Congressman who has not actually seen Pierre's document. As the FBI is being accused in participating in a cover up of this matter and Pierre claims his material is not Internet sourced, it is natural that FBI would have reason to paint his material in a negative light. For you to assume the FBI to have no bias in the face of Salinger's credentials and unchanged stance suggests you are biased. At the best you can say the matter is in question. Further, to imply that material found on Internet is worthless is not founded. At best you may say it must be considered carefully before accepting it, which will require addressing the actual issues. These people are going for broke, all or nothing. By definition, by playing nice and "reasonable" (as mdoggin suggests below) you will, by definition, lose. Yes, we may not like their make or brake style, but if we fail to take it into account, we are being "stupid" and setting ourselves for inevitably being overtaken (and the ensuing catastrophy for all of us). This "playing nice" BS is part of their arsenal against you... and you willingly drink this kool-aid... why? If that's the way you play their game, you might as well commit seppuku (suicide) and avoid the humiliation, defeat and frustration. Would you fight hitler with votes and peaceful protests? I repeat... are you "stupid"? Which part of fascism and diebold do you fail to understand?

Far from me to minimize the enlightenment of the world by your founding fathers... But today is another day, enlightening also, as to what lengths American will fail to go to in order to defend Liberty; that is an another form of enlightenment... I may be slightly facetious... but not because I dislike your country, oh never, but because I have grown tired of the lack of spine to defend its essence and raison d'être by its citizens. How can you have become so tetanized? You are saying that Rove is at the end of his rope and thus seem to suggest that I may be counterproductive by promoting such radicalism. I assure you that when I insult "stupid" Americans, it is not because I lack affection for them but because I am at a loss for what is happening and their inaction. In addition, I shall also suffer the consequences of all of this, after all Empires stretch far and wide. I agree with you totally about Geneva Convention, etc... but totally disagree on the possibility of, in effect regaining a branch of government. Even if you do win in fact, they will not allow you to have that power. And should the democrats regain the control of one chamber, they will fail to call those responsible to account. This is indeed unfortunate as such calling to account and even robust prosecution would be the only way for the US to regain stature, trust and its leadership position. Trial and sentencing for bush? Surely you jest. So we shall soon know whether you and your more gentlemanly manners are right... Or I and my more radical ones. If I were to be right... Would you then show the courage to do what then needs to be done? Or is the example of the founding father who did not hesitate to technically commit treason for the values they held dear actually falling on deaf hears as far as you are concerned? You know Mr Revere, that you are talking to the country that perfected democracy in the eighteeenth century, when the rest of the world was ensconced in monarchy and theocracy. Insulting the residents, even if they have been distracted from the fundamentals of freedom is not a productive enterprise. It is imperative that as many Americans as possible are clued into the ruse that currently under way with this film. The Rovers are at the end of their rope. They will do or say anything to retain at least two branches of government. It is imperative that the electorate is engaged and aware of what is going on. Bravo Buzz Flash! I don't want to be finicky, but the craddle of democracy is Ancient Greece, and democracy as we know it has been the rule of the game in Switzerland since 1291 when it was created. You should review your History. Also, democracy is not a ware that you export at gun point.

Why do you stupid Americans put up with this shit? Go to ABC headquarters, trash the place. Go to your local mall, the disney store, trash the place. You know a local abc affiliate, go trash the place. OK, you may be arrested and jailed... ain't that the price of freedom? you're close to Anaheim or in FLA... trash the place. Throw rocks on anyone entering the parks. What's wrong with you Americans, always lecturing others about freedom, have you yourselves got what it takes to defend it? When are you gonna realize your vote and all that crap are outdated "quaint" concepts. Don't you see everything accelerating? Are you so oblivious to history that your don't know what the next step in the nazi playbook is? peaceful protests and boycotts won't do squat. You need to steamroll and kill. Why not pay a visit to your Local ABC Station?

Despite Ronnie RayGun killing off the "Fairness Doctrine", all TV stations must make available to the public, their FCC license and any application for renewal. This information is supposed to include how they have "served" the market in which they operate. Any citizen may challenge a license renewal to operate and I think a valid reason to oppose renewal, is the station not serving the market they were licensed to operate in. I don't see why we can't pay them a visit, ask to see their license (during normal business hours) and while we're there looking over this documentation--express how unhappy we are with the "GOP Propaganda" they are about to air. Now, if they thought that they'd have to be fighting off 200-300 challenges to each license being renewed, wouldn't that make them think twice? Manybe I'm out of line here and of course I have posted this suggestion elsewhere. I've also read folks saying "why don't we go after ABC's license", but the point I think we need to keep in mind is that all licenses are issued to stations, in the market they operate in. So ABC would have licenses in NY, LA, SF, etc and that's where we'd all have to pay a visit. But in any event, I just don't understand why we aren't going for their throats. After all, what is a TV station without a license to operate? What would happen to ABC, if all their affiliates had their licenses challenged?

But tt'll be no more than a footnote in the history books, provided that we the people see to it that our troops in Iraq are brought home now. And then it'll be impeachment time for President George Bush, after which he'll be headed for the International Court of Criminal Justice to be tried for his crimes against humanity. As for what'll happen to the directors of ABC and the rest of the MSM for their having enabled our president to carry out his crimes against humanity? That'll be for the people to decide.

Some Musings on Disney and Demagoguery

A truly enlightnening piece of investigative journalism. I am amazed at the skill and cunning of this administration in the field of elections; why is it that they cannot do anything else with even a hint of competence? This is truly a Machiavellian scheme. Nice touch indoctrinating the Jungen with Scholastic Inc. The only sad part is that Mr. Disney himself isn't around to see the gradual slide to totalitarianism. I understand he was quite a fan of that system. He would be proud of his successors. Keep up the brilliant research to expose these people for what they are; greedy, cowardly demagogues; I salute your good work. Sometime after Paris Hilton is cleared, surley the electorate of your great country has to figure out what is going on, that is if Mel Gibson can keep his liquor under control. Perhaps it is time to screen 'Triumph of the Will' simultaneously with the Disney production so they can compare production values. The Rove is brilliant at waging electoral battles on several fronts at the same time; I simply cannot understand why his charges are so inept at every other endeavour. Or perhaps they are trying to prove that government is incapable of managing the country to justify their looting of the public treasury while they hand control to the private sector.

"Path to 9/11"

Thanks for your excellent commentary on the background of the despicable defamatory "Path to 9/11." There one angle you didn't mention regarding the cozy triangle of ABC, Disney, and Scholastic Inc. Yes--Disney jumped at Rove's request for a 9/11 pre-election propaganda piece, and ABC agreed to air it. But the most insidious action of all was the involvement of Scholastic, Inc. Why? Scholastic sent the "Path to 9/11" and a study guide to schools across the country to be played this week, during class time, to 100,000 students. Here's the catch. ABC billed the show as a "documentary" until the overwhelming factual errors and lies were exposed. So ABC simply started calling it a "docu-drama." Very clever. If they call it a docu-drama, facts don't matter--you should know it's fictional. But Scholastic sent "Path to 9/11" as a "documentary" to the schools. Now that it is a "docu-drama" meaning it's bogus and fictional, will Scholastic pull and destroy all copies of the film and the study guides? How can we be sure this will happen? What if copies on classroom shelves are inadvertently shown next year or five years from now, long after ABC's "disclaimer" is forgotten? WHO will make sure the copies of "Path to 9/11" sent to our shcools are collected, counted, and destroyed?

My grandchildren attend public schools and Monday morning I am calling the office of the Schools Superintendent for the County to inquire about their plans to destroy whatever material was provided by Scholastic Inc concerning this "Path to 9 11" program. I will volunteer to collect it and drive to Orlando to burn them in front of DisneyWorld gates. JJJ

The Path to 911 and our schools

Most certainly this film should not be presented to our school children as is reportedly planned. The tragedy of 9/11 is too sensitive and serious to be treated with fictional accounts. My ten grandchildren do not need to have the facts of 9/11 confused with the fiction perpetrated by a political agenda. (It has been determined that no Democrats were consulted or permitted to preview the material - only Republicans.) And, incidentally, the TV Week guide sent out today (Sunday, 9/10/06)with the right-wing controlled state newspaper contained a review with the following comments: "I've previewed 8 or 9 documentaries on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks as the fifth-year anniversary nears, so I was braced for the ABC miniseries --(P29911/)." "The miniseries is infuriating. It's inspiring, frustrating, inflaming and depressing. It'll make you shake your head wondering how all that could have happened in America." "Blame Monica Lewinsky. Or Bill Clinton. Probably both of them." "We had the guy trapped and let him slip away." "'The Path to 9/11' is a dramatization of events as presented in The 9/11 Commission Report." This review of the miniseries did not once mention that any scenes or events were fictional! We cannot let this presentation stand in any way. It must be protested by boycotts and constant communiques to all levels of those who prepared and presented it. BTW, how many of you remember the storming of the ballot recount headquarters in Florida in 2000 by staffers and relatives of Republican senators and representatives in their successful effort to stop the recount of votes?

the threat is that the neoconmen are attempting in a two day period to rewrite history and not in a subtle way. then trying to release it to the general public as though it were a factual, accurate and neutral perspective which couldnt be further from the truth. by thier own admission. it is a malignant misinformation campaign. they have even made a deliberate, evil attempt to involve the public education system and to distribute the farce to our kids! dont believe anyone else kiddies, you can trust US, your emperor is a true patriot and a nice guy! forget about all those official investigations showing he is a deserter, liar, fraud, thief, drunk, murderer. garbed in the pseudo respectability of wholesome disney respectable ABC and nonpartisan academics of scholastic books they are attempting to pass off a work of propaganda constructed by extreme rightist conservatives as a form of educational material to the masses. so many already read the 911 report, so many know about the senate findings that BUSH LIED about sadaam / bin ladin link, we all know there werent any wmd's, and dubyah's dad put both bin ladin and sadaam up to the jobs. this whole thing is a distraction, watch and see what is going on out of the current spotlight that they want to hide from public scrutiny. and BOYCOTT disney and ABC and scolastic books. lufinn

What's a stake

Remember what's at stake. There is no way that bush&co. can allow investigations into their multitude of crimes. They pulled out all the stops in all three previous elections to gain and retain power so this wouldn't happen. The stakes now is much higher. Enough of the public know that things aren't right. If they know nothing else, (just how can the 43% be that still think Hussien had anything to do with 9/11?) the public knows they weren't paying $3 gal when bush took office. Like all corrupt enterprises they become more obvious the longer they are allowed to operate. Enough stink has risen to the surface of this cell pool of an administration to be penetrate even the most hardened of partisans nostrils. Hence the warning. Something big and bad is going to happen if rove's tactics look like they're not going to over come what's left of our democratic system of voting.

So let the 30% loser Bush crowd watch their badly done movie and they will be happy. Everyone else can turn it off, boycott ABC/Disney from now on, and leave Fantasyland for Reality Island. Reminds me of a joke. Donald Duck was asking Mickey Mouse, "So you left Minnie because she's crazy?" Mickey says, "I didn't say she was crazy, I said she was f---ing Goofy". Good-bye Mickey. We hardly knew ya.

Rent or buy 'V' for Vendetta and have a house party, both nights if necessary! I watched it tonight for the third time, the first time i really could hear everything (first time it was projected on the top of the tent at camp casey) and highly recommend it.

I believe in the power of boycotts but you gotta do it not just talk about it. Walking your talk is the only way things will change.

9/11 exposed - what's next?

I couldn't agree more with the analysis and the call for a boycott on products. More compelling, though: we all need to go sit on Diebold's doorstep and boycott their voting machines and voter tally programs...We've got to get out there and vote but make sure the votes are counted and verifiable. No more blind trust for corporations. Let's hit the streets, sing our protest, and withhold our currency! musicelder
