Will Fear Strike Out?
A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL
Even the Christian Science Monitor, which tends to cover the news with relatively less administration bias than other mainstream papers, couldn’t help falling for the bait, yet again.
"Another blow to Al Qaeda in Iraq: Iraqi officials captured the No. 2 leader of the terrorist group," reads the Monitor headline. One blogger noted that this was the 39th "top or near the top" al-Qaeda official captured or killed in Iraq – and the violence only gets worse.
In fact, over the weekend, when the mainstream media once again fell for the PR hype that the Busheviks were making progress in the war in Iraq by capturing a "key" al-Qaeda figure, Iraq descended further into the heart of darkness. More than 30 mutilated male bodies were found in and around Baghdad and at least 7 "coalition soldiers" were killed. The media has been through this cycle of PR stunts by the Bush Administration so many times before – you know, the "We finally got one of the the top guys and the violence will diminish now" PR announcements – that you would think that the press would at least put the word "alleged" in front of "Number 2 al-Qaeda Leader in Iraq."
Not that it would matter, if you were even to believe that all these killed or captured men are "top" al-Qaeda members, it’s of little importance to the carnage in Iraq. What is going on in that nation now is a civil war, in which al-Qaeda plays only a secondary role, by all accounts except for the Bushevik Ministry of Propaganda.
Meanwhile the threshold has been crossed: more American men and women have now been killed in Bush’s ill-conceived wars than the number of those who died on September 11.
And right now our Gis are dying because the Bush Administration can’t admit a dreadful and horrific mistake. They are dying because they are cannon fodder for a fall election that is going to culminate in some grand finale of fear (the exact nature of which, only Karl Rove and Cheney know). They are dying because they are occupiers in a nation where two Islamic sects are slaughtering each other – and sometimes our soldiers just happen to be in the way.
The lack of skepticism on the part of the mainstream media as another "top" terror leader was arrested leads one to believe that Rove is still in charge of the media train called "Fear Express."
The 24-hour blitz coverage of yet another "blow to the terrorists" was nonsensical. It makes no sense, because it will have no impact on the civil war in Iraq, the deaths of our soldiers or Iraqis. It’s a political announcement blown totally out of proportion to its impact on the bloody chaos. After all, weren’t we supposed to see violence reduced hundreds of times before, most notably with the capture of Saddam Hussein, the killing of his sons, and the killing of Zaqarwi?
Karl Rove is going for broke, playing the fear card to the extreme for the third time around in a national election.
Everyone knows that the "news events" such as the weekend’s arrest are unfolding according to a timetable of sorts. Everybody knows that there is going to be some fear mongering event shortly before the November election that will put the Democrats on the defensive.
It won’t have to be true; it won’t have to be verifiable; it will only have to be terrifying enough in its packaging to attract the usual media frenzy that loves fright fests.
And it will only have to go unchallenged through the end of voting.
The media is supposed to be the mediator between an event and our emotions. It is supposed to give us news tempered by reason and a reasoned perspective on the news. But many years ago, it abandoned that role – and now it is just a hotwire into the mosh pit of our emotions. And Karl Rove is the guy that puts the two wires together and starts the electrical jolt – again and again.
Will the Democrats have run enough focus groups and come up with enough contingency plans to be ready for the big jolt of fear coming our way?
Will they be able to ensure that this time fear will strike out?
If not, we should be prepared for full darkness to set over America.
If Rove succeeds, it won’t be morning in America; it will be mourning for America.

Forget Bush-Rove- Focus on CONGRESS
Zero Hope for Iraq Pullout Without Democratic Majority
I'm not going to give you a lecture on the committee system in Congress or what happens when the leadership changes hands except to say, we need every Democrat who walks, creeps or crawls to vote for the next speaker and majority leader. If you vote against a Democrat, your vote hammer will be more like an overcooked ravioli on a popsicle stick
As to relating Bush's unpopularity to Congress, the Rumsfeld initiative is ideal for that. In a role call vote, Republicans who vote against "No confidence in Rumsfeld" will have hard time explaining why they are not rubber-stamps for an unpopular Bush and a mismanaged war.
Your vote-against-Democrats plan will keep us in Iraq until Jenna Bush is old enough to drink her way into the White House. Please take another look at the foolhardiness of your bipartisan scheme.

Depends on just how dumb Americans really are...
What the Democrats can do...
Keep pressure on Rumsfeld
It would be nice if the Democratic blogs would join the leading members of Congress who have done this with a coordinated one-day display of a "Fire Rumsfeld" message on the front page, temporarily replacing all other content.
Failing that, simply a pledge to avoid talking shit about other Democrats for 60 days would be good.
The GOP strategy is to make the public fear the Democrats as weak and disorganized; we have a chance to turn the tables, but it'll take teamwork.

Can he fire Rumsfeld?
Response to what the Democrats can do
Mistake?
No Hail Mary Pass
In past campaigns, Rove has relied more on steady repetitiion of a few messages than on pyrotechnics at the end. If his idea is to get the country to rally around Bush by threatening war in Iran, for example, I think that would happen in September, not October.
Rove's campaigns are usually pretty simple--Gore is a liar, and I'll cut your taxes. Last time, it was even simpler--You can't trust Kerry because he lied about being a war hero; trust your president instead. The Swift boat attacks came in August, not October.
This time it's also simple--Democrats are afraid to fight terrorists, but we've kept you safe. The have a big megaphone to shout out this lie.
The message that the Democrats are too weak and disorganized to protect the nation is the one they hope to ride home on. Their goal is not to make Americans afraid of terror, but to make them afraid of Democrats.
A united Democratic party looks strong; a divided, quarrelsome, self-critical party looks weak. With Labor Day past, nothing is more important than for those of us in "blogosphere" and "DLC" wings of the party to mute our differences and concentrate our critical remarks on George Bush and the GOP.
Americans will be afraid of terror; there is not stopping that, nor is it entirely unreasonable. We must make sure they fear the GOP even more. Then they will turn to a Democratic Party that is strong and confident and whose support is broad and deep.

re:

No mistake was made here....Rove wants us to think that at worst there were "mistakes".
The truth is far more sinister.
With my limited geopolitical saavy I knew what was going to happen in Iraq in 2002...can anyone think the United States government with all its intellegence agencies etc, is stupider than me?.
This was no mistake. What we have in Iraq is precisely what they wanted and planned on. All the rhetoric of misinformation, mistakes and incompetance plays right into their hands, its what they want us to believe as worst case scenario...but its not true.
"You can't handle the truth!", says a famous actor in a famous movie. He's talking to us, even Buzzflash.
Please get real people (and Buzzflash) its worse than you think!
Mourning for America

Mission right on Schedule
To the Bush Crime Family it is not a mistake. For them the plan was always: create enough chaos to that they can steal and loot and rob everything not nailed down; plunge the country into a civil war so that it cannot recover and fight back; and destroy the reputation of the U.S. so that it cannot serve as a check on global corporatism.
For the Bush crime family and the neo-cons it's "Mission Accomplished" and everything right on schedule... except for that Iran invasion... it's a little late, but they haven't given-up hope yet.
