Progressives: Divided We Fall. Keep Your Eye on the Prize of Government for the Common Good and Healing the Planet.

MARK KARLIN FOR BUZZFLASH, EDITOR'S BLOG

We hope that the Blanche Lincoln and Jane Harmon primary victories against two progressive challengers don't open another round of finger pointing and bitter recriminations among progressives.  There is too much at stake.

When I started BuzzFlash in May of 2000, before Bush was put in the White House by the Supreme Court, progressives and Democrats in general were looking for a voice to call out the Republicans for what they are: Bullies, Liars, Hypocrites and full of Gluttonous Greed.  BuzzFlash to hundreds of thousands became that voice for several years until blogs emerged and became thousands of individual voices.  The Internet became the vehicle for exposing and challenging the dishonest and thuggish theocratic oligarchy of the GOP, as the corporate mainstream media gobbled down Republican talking points and regurgitated them in stories as the "truth."  The Internet was -- for many years -- the sole counterpoint to a "frame," as George Lakoff labels it, that the GOP successfully uses to control the debate on public policy issues and skewer that discussion to the hard right.

But with the emergence of an Obama Administration that is filled with Centrists and that has leaned heavily toward corporatist governance, progressives and Democrats have split into two camps: those who are critical of Obama's frequent siding with the status quo and those who argue that he can't do anymore because of the booby traps he inherited from Reagan, Bush I and Bush II administrations.  But remember this: there is nothing that the entrenched elite and the Republicans want more than progressives to be engaged in a shooting war at each other.

BuzzFlash has not been immune from this fray, that we admit.  But we do believe that progressives need to look beyond the politics to our goal of seeing government and Americans working on behalf of the common good -- and to our long-held objective of healing the planet.  Achieving these goals involve more than electing individuals; they involve building movements.  We are awash in a sea of easy Internet "action," when we need to realize that most great advances in the U.S. -- Civil Rights, the Vote for Women, Labor improvements -- have come as the result of movements that preceded legislative remedies.

Movements require shoe leather, organization and loud voices, not e-mail petitions that are quickly deleted if they ever even arrive in a Congressional or Senate Offices.  Movements require sweat equity, courage, perseverance, self-sacrifice and determination.  Movements can change the world; E-mails to Congress won't.

Progressives need to rally behind what unites us, instead of getting caught again and again in the dashed hopes of supporting individual candidates who -- for the most part -- inevitably become a part of the Washington elite status quo of a revolving door between government and corporations.  We must become the change by making Washington and local elected officials respond to the force of movements that cannot be denied.  Lyndon Johnson would have never championed Civil Rights if there had not been years of movement activity and charismatic non-politician leadership behind the cause of equal rights.

Recently, Rabbi Brant Rosen, of the Jewish Reconstructionist Synagogue in Evanston, Illinois, wrote in an E-mail: "For me, the notion of 'joy as service' is fundamentally different from the kind of joy that is simply rooted in the self - 'joy as narcissism,' if you will. As Leo Tolstoy once wisely observed, 'Joy can only be real if people look on their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness.'"

That is the challenge that we face as progressives, to achieve through movement activity a "joy" that "can only be real if people look on their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves."

This must become our beacon, our guiding light; we must rise above the notion that politicians will implement what is necessary to advance our democracy on an equitable and environmental basis without being forced to do so.

We must become the force that powered movements and social advances in the past.  Legislation will follow only if we put our convictions into action and force elected officials to do the right thing.

Otherwise, big money will pull the strings, and we will be left bickering among ourselves on the Internet and shouting curses at FOX television in the comfort of our homes.

Jobs

I say that progressives need to win to rule.  Right now the winning move is to fight joblessness, in the gulf, in the rust belt, everywhere.  If there is a bill in Congress to create jobs, especially if it also builds infrastructure that commercial companies (especially the small ones) can bid on, the voters will punish anyone that votes against it.  The people will win, the progressive politicians will win and the conservatives will, again (sigh), prove to the public that they don't care about people.  Now is the right time to start, so that it is the issue on voters minds in the fall.  It will take that long to effervess into the public's eyes and ears.

Bravo

You are quite right that progressives need to put aside their differences and to work with what assets are available to them to improve conditions for the people of this country.  Among other things this will require some humility so that we can relax our personal certainty about which path to take.  There is apt to be another point of view on almost every topic and sometimes a good insight we should take into consideration.

I was struck by the remark that there is nothing that the entrenched elite and the Republicans want more than progressives to be engaged in a shooting war at each other.  To this I would add that these forces have never pulled their punches in an attempt to live by the Kingsbury rules; they will hit below the belt whenever the opportunity arises to do so discretely.

It would in fact be surprising if the right did not have armies of trolls posting on this and other progressive sites trying to incite discention and we cannot assume that these trolls are unskilled at deception; they will seem to be good progressives and they will be able gain desciples among true progressives.

It is my belief that at least some of the Obama-bashing that we see on so many progressive web sites is a consequence of exactly this kind of attack.  While we may disagree with things that the administration does or does not do, it is hard for me to understand progressives showing such vehiment hatred for the current administration arising other than as a result of instigation by such hostile forces.

Wecome The DLC To The Discussion

The only organization you don't bring up in your list of subversives is the Democratic Party leadership itself. We already know that they don't follow the Marquis of Queensbury anymore than the GOP does.

Sorry,

My last comment may have been overly brief and it tried to ring an historical bell that many today may be too young to hear or recognize.

It is quite unfortunate that politicians often descend to the depths of underhandedness that they do.  My impression is that the worst offenders seem to be what we used to call Southern-Democrats but who mostly now inhabit the Republican Party. However, politics seems to be an endeavor that leads many politicians to take a very low road.

All of that aside, my point was not at all to comment on the sad state of politics but to alert the reader that it is quite possible that some of what they read is likely to be coming, directly or (probably) indirectly, from these very politicians and that they may unwittingly be serving the interests of politicians they actually detest.

So?

Politics is not bean-bag.

BF

Yes, yes, the BuzzFlash message is the same as the White House and the Democratic Party, keep smiling folks, while we keep kicking your teeth in! Only a fool votes for the same people who bitch slaps them after every election. Keep up the bullshit BF!

like w/cheney??

law and order without justice is fascist....at least bf is trying to change things in the proper direction...we vote and we have the power...remember that and use it...of course you sound like a bush plant...biden was right it is a b-- f------ deal...no sin in criticizing when it is called for...but to sabotage the one of the only ones that is at least trying to speak for the powerless...remember jesus' words on he who helps the least...

It isn't the end that counts . . .

... it's the means of achieving those ends.

The Democratic Party is too corrupted for liberals to remain members. Unless and until we step outside party control, we will never influence any change.

We have to become the balance of power so that neither party can rule without us. And when they come to us for our support, we need to demand our pound of flesh. Only then could we make progress, and any gains we achieve in this process should begin to sway voters that we can get things done which will benefit them. Then we really are the power.

How to be "joyful when constantly backstabbed by those we serve?

I agree wholeheartedly with Rabbi Rosen's cogent remark about the great joy that can only be experienced through service.

Unfortunately, today's Democratic Party hates liberals and liberalism, and takes every possible opportunity to stab us in the back, deliberately uses us to help them win elections, and then forgets they ever knew us, breaking every single damn promise made to us, throwing all our hard work and effort straight into the toilet.

I'm sick of getting cut off at the knees every damn time, even by the so-called Congressional "Progressive" Caucus, which, true to form for the American left these days, totally sold out when EVERY SINGLE MEMBER broke it's much bally-hooed promise to vote no on any health care reform bill that did not contain a robust public option for health insurance.

One could easily go on and on and on listing the many and varied disloyalties suffered by liberal activists at the hands of even so-called "liberals" in Congress (in fact, there are no real, committed, liberal hard-liners in congress, today ... not one). The disappointments just keep coming, in a seemingly endless stream. The craps we take from the Dumb-o-crats is just never ending.

The reason we have the problems we do in this country is because the American left -- as a movement -- is a sorry, wimpy, impotent, unprincipled, uncommitted lot of losers. We let the Dems constantly abuse us, and we keep coming back for more, and more, and more ... and so the Dems keep giving us more crap, knowing that "liberals will never abandon the Democratic Party," and so it goes, every single year worse than the last.

It would be nice if the left could "stick together," as Mark suggests we should. That would be the ideal.

But unfortunately, most on the left have become part of the problem by refusing to leave their abuser, the Democratic Party ... by refusing to stand up for liberal principles and say "NO!!!" to Democrats (including presidents) who betray the liberal populist principles without which our nation cannot survive and is quickly dying before our eyes.

Not until and unless massive numbers of liberals are willing to leave the party will the party finally come to respect liberals and liberal policies again. And only then will this country have the slightest chance of redemption.

So I'm sorry, Mark. I, for one, am not willing to stick together with the spirit of compromise and defeat and masochistic self-abuse that has come to define today's American "left."

And if that means splitting the "left" into one part that will continue to cave/cave/cave endlessly to conservatives and their Democratic enablers, and another part that actually means business, intends to actually succeed in thwarting the prevailing notion of "one-dollar-one-vote" and reinstating "one-person-one-vote," and plans to actually WIN political battles and bring back liberalism into mainstream American political life ... then so be it.

I'm more afraid of living on my knees than I am of dying on my feet. If it takes a Republican victory to finally wake up the left in this country to the kind of serious activity and real commitment to winning it's really going to take to actually turn things around ... THAT'S JUST FINE WITH ME. Because without something to get the left off it's lazy, compromising, cowardly ass, to stop worrying about "the perfect becoming the enemy of the good" ... we're going to hell on Earth no matter what, anyway.

It's that bad in America today. Anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention, doesn't care, is a rich neo-conservative, or is a lefty in deep and dangerous denial. ALL of these people are part of the problem. That's the way I see it.

I'm sick and tired of voting AGAINST things, settling for the lesser of two unacceptable evils. I'm going to vote FOR things, and if that means the Dems lose, then the Dems can just go ahead and take three GIANT steps to the left to pick up my vote. Otherwise, my vote's going somewhere else.

AMEN!

Diogenes, here's your honest man!

NOW you want unity?!?

You spend a year or so heralding Obama as the candidate while demonizing Clinton and her supporters, and now that you realize you were duped, you want a kumbayah moment?!?

Yeah - good luck with that.

BTW - "Buzzflash has not been immune from this fray"?

Holy Buh-Jeeeeezus - like Anne Coulter calling for civil discourse while saying she "has not been immune" from inflammatory rhetoric.

too long neglected

progessives and liberals have for more than five generations have allowed their ranks to be polluted with the stink of so called gentlemanly approach assuming we were dealing with rational people the heart of game theory...in primaries where the parties were allowed to cross lines the repubs have brought us ineffectual leaders they knew they could buy bluff or intimidate...like the main stream media where honest news people were tarred with the faux liberal smear of weakness thus making it a self fulfilling prophecy...don't fight back is a sign of weakness and liberals not wanting to upset their abusers have given way...and slowly but surely over time we have been saddled with hubert humphreys et al...not since fdr and truman have we produced a fighter...lbj over did it like the 90lbs weakling going to great lengths to prove how tough they are...like this business about dems being weak on defense...what was the last REAL war that the repub/crats conservatives have won....the civil war but felt guilt about it so they are now trying to reverse that outcome by proxy..they led the way for isolationists in ww2 if they had their way we would be zeig heiling to our furor probably some like w....war hawks who know nothing about war except what they see on john wayne movies and 24...leading our foreign policy...and the movie wallstreet and dallas for an economic templates of greed which have left us in a real mess...not to mention using the policies of harding collidge and hoover to fill in the blanks...they want to turn america into a third world country where we will be making a dollar a day working in sweat shops in a toxic waste land....we need to speak up in one voice and make it a loud one that they will not forget...they equate gentleness with weakness a real mistake and it is a matter of time before they push us too far...their everlasting damnation if they do and ours if we let them

I have been trying to find commonality with the dems for

years.  There is just nothing there anymore.

Donations to Halter

In this recession I came up with some money and donated it to Bill Halter, Obama didnt appreciate that - Clinton didnt appreciate that - they weighed in in a decisive way anyway against all the good Americans toughing it out in this recession who donated and volunteered for Bill Halter.

You want to talk about Unity???  They knew what Liberals wanted and they head-on opposed what Liberals wanted.  I don't know if Halter was Liberal enough for the people up here who didnt want the Public Option because IT wasnt Liberal enough, didnt want the Truth Commission because IT wasnt Liberal enough.  Liberals arent rejecting all compromise - not the ones who donated to Bill Halter - Liberals who donated to Bill Halter are pragmatic, open to compromise.  Moderates have had their thumbs in their ears for years humming "I can ignore Liberals so I should ignore Liberals" over and over.

Behind every Authoritarian success was a Moderate who didnt want to appear a certain way.

Movement Activity

This sounds like a dandy idea, until you consider that our police have become militarized, and they have a whole load of "crowd control" tricks in their bag. Americans don't like the way things are, but they don't want to be jailed or maimed or killed. And these so-called "constitutional rights" we have....guess what? If you can't afford a good lawyer (thousands of dollars), you don't HAVE any rights. Most people who end up in jail will lose their jobs, and maybe their homes and their families. It's one thing to spout off about standing up for our rights on a website. It's quite another to endanger yourself and your family. We are basically slaves and our govt and justice system will put anyone in jail they please. Do you have 6 months of savings and a few thousand besides for a lawyer? Can you miss time at work without losing your job? How good is your medical coverage, because you might be injured? It's getting to the point where people have nothing to lose, but it's not there yet.

Critical mass won't be pretty.

I would hope that turning point is reached soon before things get much worse.

vote

law and order without justice is fascist....time to make that count for a change...and recount if necessary and not lay down when they say we are unfair when we demand...not ask but demand our rights..if they get in our way ghandi had a solution and we can make it stick...no matter how many white collar staff protesters they ship in
