Global Corporations Now Eclipse the Power of Sovereign States: We are at Their Mercy

MARK KARLIN FOR BUZZFLASH, EDITOR'S BLOG

To say that many global corporations get away with murder is not an understatement; it's a likely fact. BP --despite the DOJ's investigation which given the Obama Administration's corporatist record will end up putting some low level figure or two in jail to avoid offending the President's corporate CEO buddies -- as miners get killed because of the intentional negligence of Massey Energy in West Virginia, as men on oil rigs in waters that shouldn't be drilled in get blown to smithereens, and union organizers killed by paramailitary groups with alleged relations to Coca Cola in Colombia and elsewhere, and the list goes on and on.

And then there are the slave wages, toxic pollution, deaths caused by cancer, predatory monopoly of the earth's harvest as Monsanto is doing around the world with its GMO rice.   Then there is the IMF and World Bank forcing third world countries to by from these firms.  Then there is Wal-Mart as our de facto State and Commerce Department power behind the U.S. presence in China, paying slave wages to sell cheap products to Americans who have lost their jobs.  The list goes on and on.

Exxon/Mobil reported the largest profit in the history of the corporate world last year; they make hundreds of billions of dollars.  Few nations have the financial resources of these multinational corporations; the dollars to buy men, women and the power over lives without acccountablity for the death and ruin that they leave in their wake.

Most of the nations of the world, including the U.S. D.C. government and President Obama, are wholly owned subsidiaries of the multi-national corporations who run the world without fear of anything but an occasional outcry and laugably small penalty imposed on them to make it seem like a country's leader is actually punishing them.  But the Masters of the Universe know that the necessary PR stunts are done for political purposes and go about doing what they do best, raping the world for profit.

Ten years ago BuzzFlash was started by me with the vision of progressive socialism, but now i feel the strength of grassroots populism where people create the change and force the corporate puppets in D.C. to flee office if they don't want to be tarred and feathered and dumped into a toxic pool of BP oil sludge.

It's time for a non-violent revolution of civil disobedience against the corporations who run the sovereign governments of the world; it's time for the resources of the planet to return to the people of the planet; it's time for democracy to flourish free of the toxic influence of greed and money concentrated in the hands of so few who care so little about the future of life and the planet.

It is time for an outburst of populism that is a celebration of life and progress against the corporate agents of death and destruction who pull the levers in D.C. and around the world.

Remember what happened at Kent State--

The government would not dare to counter anti-corporate demonstrations with a violent, deadly response. After the murders at Kent State, even people who were not actively against the Viet Nam war realized that things had gone too far, and public opinion against the war steadily increased.

More subtle ways would be found to quiet down the rabble. After all, that is what the Tea Party is all about--they are being manipulated to channel their discontent into demands for less government "intervention" in their lives in ways that will only further harm their wellbeing (i.e., no healthcare reform, attacks on Social Security) instead of protesting the pro-corporate government policies that are the cause of their diminishing quality of life.

Waste of time

Why waste your time and energy replying to Alan8?  He has been 'greenwashed' to the point that his only answer to any question is 'Vote Green'.  He goes so far as to claim that the Greens and Tea Partiers have overlapping areas of common ground.  The Green Party I am familiar with has its beginnings in progressivism and the Tea Party, so far as I can tell, has its beginnings in Libertarianism. Given the inherent opposition represented by those two modes of thought I can't see any viable solutions coming from a meeting of the minds between a Green and a Tea Party adherent.  If you read his posts you'll see he claims that there are over 200 Greens holding elective office in the US.  That may sound like an impressive number until you go to the link he provides and realize (a) over 25% are in CA; (b) the VAST majority of the 'elective offices' are City Council members, elected committee members, members on Trustee boards, auditors with a wee sprinkling of Mayors.  There is not one State Rep or Senator much less a national legislator.  The gist of the commentary seems to be that we need to get out into the streets with acts of civil disobedience; I agree that is the only way we can even begin to address the dissolution of our democracy but just one caveat: they will kill you if you begin to make a difference so be prepared.

Green Party

Well, voting Green IS the solution to many problems.  Who else would represent your interests?  The Democrats?  They brought you NAFTA and let all the outrages of the Bush Administration happen.  Their first priority is protecting profits for the most powerful corporations.  Do you deny this?

The Greens and the Tea Partiers are both concerned about the damaging effects of the powerful forces running our government.  The Tea Partiers are misguided, but that can be corrected with time.

Over 200 Greens in office is progress.  We expect more progress in the future.

BTW a Green was elected to the Arkansas General Assembly in 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Party_%28United_States%29)

I'm Not Sure About This

It's time for a non-violent revolution of civil disobedience against the corporations who run the sovereign governments of the world;

I fear that non-violence will not be enough.  The 40 killed at Upper Big Branch and on Deepwater Horizon are more than ample proof that corporations put their profits before any and all human considerations and they will not hesitate to enforce their interests by force.  They control nearly every aspect of our lives - what we eat, read and watch; where we live and work.  Which is worse: a system in which the government owns the corporations or one in which the corporations own the government? I vote for the latter.

The corporations will not yield a nanometer unless their very existence is threatened.  I think some violence will be inevitable, and when it comes, I know my sympathies will be with the villagers bearing torches and pitchforks.

Violence is a mistake

Violence is a mistake.  It gives the corporate forces an excuse to be violent, and it will be used to portray the resistance as lawless thugs.

The army has weapons that, in seconds, can blanket acres with a bullet every five inches.  Direct confrontation, even with a very large crowd, isn't feasible.

We must take power from the corporations non-violently, preferably through elections.  Value Four of the Green Party's Ten Key Values (http://www.gp.org/tenkey.shtml) is:

NON-VIOLENCE
It is essential that we develop effective alternatives to society’s current patterns of violence. We will work to demilitarize, and eliminate weapons of mass destruction, without being naive about the intentions of other governments.  We recognize the need for self-defense and the defense of others who are in helpless situations. We promote non-violent methods to oppose practices and policies with which we disagree, and will guide our actions toward lasting personal, community and global peace.

Green Parties: Standing up to the multinational corporations

The Green Party doesn't accept any corporate money and has a set of Ten Key Values (http://www.gp.org/tenkey.shtml) that guide its policies.  Their policies represent CITIZENS' interests, not corporate interests.

Many people are unaware that virtually every country on the planet has a Green Party, and these Green Parties share the same Ten Key Values.

This makes the Green Parties uniquely positioned for the international coordination needed to stand up to the powerful multinational corporations.

There are over 200 Greens in elected office in the US (http://www.feinstein.org/greenparty/electeds.html), and the UK has recently gotten its first Green member of Parliament (http://www.greenfudge.org/2010/05/12/green-party-party-uk-greens-get-first-mp/).  The Ten Key Values resonate with peoples' sense of justice, which contributes to this growing international movement.

Vote Green to stand up to the multinational corporations!

When the greens start to recruit.

When I see Greens at the "tea party" events recruiting I will start to support the greens.

These people know something is wrong. They are not fools or jokes. They are part of America. You may disagree with some of their postitions and beliefs but the whole idea is to get everybody on the same page.

The page is "There is a lot wrong and this is what we are doing to correct it, what else do you think we can do?"

Greens and Tea Partiers have similar concerns

I agree with you; Greens and Tea Partiers have many overlapping areas of concern.

The main problem is that Tea Partiers have been manipulated and propagandized by corporate interests, and have some counterproductive misconceptions.  For example, many of them believe that the government is the enemy.

But as you said, they're not fools, and eventually they'll learn how they've been manipulated.  I have hopes many of them will join the resistance to corporate power.

So why'd the Greens fail so miserably in Arizona?

Arizona is a clean money, clean election state. Candidates for state elective office are eligible for public campaign funding, the corporations are out of it. Yet no Greens set in the Arizona state legislature.

Why? What is the Greens' excuse for this electoral failure.
